can you spot the critical mistake in this drainage system it's a big one and believe it or not homeowners and even some pro plumbers make this mistake over and over the confusion happens when selecting the proper dwv fitting for two horizontal drain pipes that intersect there's only a handful of fittings that the plumbing code allows for this transition and it's crucial that you know which fittings are approved and which are not approved I'm Dillon Spitz from Hammer pedia comm and by the time you're finished watching this quick video you'll know how to pick the right dwv fitting to ensure your next plumbing job is up to code let's take a closer look at this sanitary tee check out the sweep here it looks smooth but is it really smooth enough the answer is no waste draining through a horizontal pipe that connects to another horizontal pipe cannot connect via a sanitary tee this is the big mistake no plumbing code allows it if you check out Table seven oh six point three in the international plumbing code you'll see that it does not allow sanitary tees for horizontal to horizontal connections or if your state follows the UPC check out 706 point three it reads horizontal drainage lines connecting with other horizontal drainage lines shall enter through 45-degree Y branches combination Y and 1/8 bin branches or other approved fittings of equivalent sweep so in order to help ensure that you're choosing the right drainage fittings I've put together this list along with pictures of each of the fittings I'll show you how to get a free copy of this in just a second but first here's a quick rundown of just some of these approved fittings you can use a lie notice that the side inlet is offset 45 degrees this makes a much smoother transition than the sanitary tee it's less likely to clog and a plumbing snake can easily penetrate a Y you can also use an eighth Bend also known as a 45-degree fitting in combination with the Y you can use a combo fitting this is called a combo Y and eighth Bend notice it's all one piece and it's approved now if you just need to turn your pipe horizontally use the long sweep 90 this makes the smooth transition we want now be careful with 90s here because you can't use the standard quarter bin 90 compare it sweep to the long sweep it's not smooth enough and this quarter bin is not approved for horizontal to horizontal connections however if your plumbing code is under the IPC there is an exception that I outlined in this free handout but when in doubt use a long sweep 90 you can never go wrong with it so what about other changes in direction besides horizontal to horizontal what about a horizontal to vertical transition or a vertical to horizontal how can you know you're choosing the right fitting well I've got you covered because I've put together a free resource that outlines all the approved fittings along with pictures of each fitting you can print this out and keep it in your toolbox for future reference just click the link in the description of this video for instant access
