receive the lord's tithe and offerings i want you to prepare your giving everybody say the lord's tithe it is not yours nowhere in this book does it call it yours amen it is the lord's tithe leviticus 27. everyone stand with me i want to challenge 100 percent to be a tither from young to elderly you need to obey the scriptures in malachi it says will a man rob god yet ye have robbed me but you say wherein have we robbed thee and god's word says in tithes and offerings the tithe belongs to the lord and everyone needs to understand that it is not our tithe ten percent out of every dollar that you make belongs to god amen god is covenant keeping and he says if you will tithe i will open the windows of heaven over your life how many want the open windows over your life amen hallelujah i'm going to say amen to myself right now actually i'll say amen to god's word god says i will rebuke the devourer for your sake somebody just needs to take a step of faith you need to understand that god's word is true you can never out-give god amen and tithing is a covenant that you're entering into agreement with god with god and with god nothing's impossible and i want to challenge 100 to be a tither to obey god's word he says bring all the tithe where be a biblical tither bring it to the storehouse don't buy a boat with it amen bring it to the storehouse that there will be meat in mine house and prove me god says test me [Music] god's not going to fail the test how many raise your hand say god's true to his word amen amen everyone online watching you can text to give or the online information is there god says i will rebuke the devourer for your sakes he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field saith the lord and god says i'll even cause nations to rise up and bless you how does he do that well we support a hundred different 180 different missionary projects every month this church gives to missions but we also give locally we call it local to global amen and because of your faithful giving this week this past monday 45 police officers were fed breakfast right here at our lodge come on we fed 45 jso officers and got to pray with all but two of them all week long we were doing different kinds of outreaches this was heroes week last sunday what was the number 150 180 that we fed after the second service and uh this week just ministered to firemen and to the police and and on and on just doing outreach is because of the faithful giving of this congregation amen how many believe we're supposed to be doing those kind of things amen and it's because of the faithful giving of this church family and god says i will rebuke the devourer for your sakes he shall not say shall not destroy the fruit of the ground neither shall your vine cast its fruit before its time in the field sayeth the lord and all nations will call you blessed father we thank you for the opportunity to be in worship this morning we don't take it lightly this is such a privilege to be in the house of god and to honor you with what belongs to the lord the tithe is the lord's we celebrate you father you've been so good to your people and we honor you tonight today and we thank you that you've been so faithful to watch over your word in our lives and now we give you praise and adoration and i speak a blessing over every home every family every business we call in a harvest come on everybody say father i call in my harvest i'm a seed planter and you said my seed would produce a harvest and i call we had lost forever [Music] [Music] forever oh [Music] forever [Music] majesty [Music] yes you yesterday [Music] [Music] forever [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] who's there [Music] [Music] we slip your hands up and just say hosanna hosanna hosanna in the highest jesus king of kings and lord of lords we are here to minister unto you hallelujah hallelujah everyone's standing and today we're privileged to have some very very special guests we have a culture of honor at evangel that we believe the scripture says pay honor to whom honor is due and all this week we've been paying honor to first uh responders in different areas of our city last weekend was a great day of honor and today we have a pastor that we're going to honor pastor shelby summerlin that there are many spiritual accolades that he has been a blessing to the kingdom of god over the years and we have his family here down to my right if you will just show us some appreciation and we appreciate them being here they're all from the moultrie georgia area and uh you might recognize that name summerlin because my granddaughter is named after this family her name is summerlin and uh and uh this is a good family we've known them for many many years and actually related to them by marriage and pastor shelby summerlin has an earned bachelor's degree of administration he has two doctorates he served on the executive board for seven years of logos university which is a wonderful university he has been responsible for 17 different churches that have been built here in the jacksonville area that he has helped build and finance but more than that he has helped finance hundreds of churches across the south and god has used him to be a blessing to the lord's church and i was telling before we came out here you can't do better than honor the lord's church because jesus said the gates of hell won't prevail against my church and when you get behind something jesus is behind you're on the right side of something amen amen but one of the things that you may know him by that i've said we've just never had them in a service to honor him but he has read his bible through 829 times i want us to come on that is an honor he's 92 years of age and i believe that friends the word works in a life amen i'm gonna come over here and say amen amen god's gonna honor his word amen and it is a privilege to have him here today to deliver the word in this early service but uh he's been a faithful pastor he and his dear wife and uh they pastored and built five different assembly of god churches in in georgia and god used them though to help so many other churches that needed church financing and needed direction in building and as i said there's 17 churches right now in jacksonville that he helped uh help them get financing and help them build their buildings and so i want us to give a hearty uh god bless you to pastor shelby summerlin and his dear wife sister summerlin and for years of faithful ministry in the work of god and he's coming to preach the word of god amen amen he has been you all know my wife's mother sister louise clanton this is her brother and he's been faithful and so all through the years and he's coming to deliver the word of the lord and one more time i want you to honor him amen as a faithful servant of the word of god amen hallelujah hallelujah good morning it's great to be here you may be seated i was thinking as i heard this wonderful orchestra i suppose is a good word for and those well-trained voices i thought about the church the first church that i pastored about 70 years ago but i want to tell you a little bit about the orchestra in that church there was three rubbing boards 10 spoons four tambourines one fiddle with three strings and two of them broke and a number of other things that i can't enumerate right now but that was the choir now i was wondering just wondering what would have been the behavior of that congregation if they could have been here this morning with all of these lights and all of these fancy stuff microphones and why when i saw them fields coming up i wanted to go get my mule and plow that's tremendous but i i'm excited about being here in always always the gospel i been carrying this message for a number of years and god has been good to us and he has been good to you he's been good you've had some wonderful pastors who are great friends of ours and uh of course now you've got some real good ones because they're kin to me you know so i'm so i want you to always take good care of them now because they are they're worthy of their hire now if you don't know what hire means that that means so they can eat you know just take care of them if you would please turn with me to the book of um jeremiah this morning and we're going to talk about one of the tools in the bible i have done over the years i've done a series of sermons on tools of the bible and i'm going to incorporate that in a book a little later probably when i get to 100 i'll start on that but i i'm going to talk to us today about one that jeremiah talked about and that is the hammer and if you would please you just uh turn with me to the 23rd chapter and we'll read in the 28th verse the prophet that hath a dream let him tell a dream he have a word let him speak my word faithfully what is the chaft to the wheat saith the lord is not my word as a fire saith the lord and lack a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces now let me read that last verse is not my word like as a fire and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces heavenly father we are grateful for your goodness and again we come as we've come so many many times before knowing that nothing will be done unless you do it knowing that no voice will be heard lest your voice be heard and nothing good at all will be done this morning lord if the people just see what i've done but i've come to talk about your work today and what you've done and what you will do for these people if they'll continue to serve you so i ask thy blessing upon us today and this time in jesus name and everybody said amen now if you were to journey to our office in moldy georgia and you were to go in that office building this morning you would walk into the secretary's office and you would see hammers on the east wall you would see hammers sealing to the floor on the west wall on the south wall you'd see hammers i have about 3 000 hammers on display in that office i have been able to gather the second largest hamburg collection in the nation and have enjoyed every moment of it and it all started right here when i discovered this verse in the bible i when i saw that the word the word was like a fire and that the word was like a hammer i knew there was a reason and so i dug in and began to try and unravel this great story now to begin with we we need to talk a little bit about the hammer first of all you know the hammer was made in the fire and no hammer is worth anything if it hadn't been introduced to the fire and you realize that church works about the same way if you didn't if you haven't been introduced to the fire you still haven't matured you've got some maturing to do because you've got to be introduced to the fire i was born on my grandfather's farm about five miles from boulder georgia and he was a excellent farmer but he was also a good blacksmith and he made all of his tools for his plows nothing but mules on the farm and he made plows and all types of things for those plows and other implements to farm with and i used to enjoy going down to his blacksmith shop and watch my grandfather form a two the first place he would go was to what he call the scrap iron pile i want you to remember that he would go to the scrap iron pile the throwbacks the rejects and he would walk out there and he smoked an old pecan homemade pipe and he would hold his pipe in his hand and he would begin kicking that iron around and he'd look you turn the piece over he looked and he spent several minutes there turning those pieces of iron and finally he would reach over and pick one piece and all i saw when he picked it up was a piece of scrap iron but you know my grandfather knew that it was more there than just scrap iron it was more there than just a piece of waste and throwback you know that's what jesus did for you and me hallelujah i'm glad one day that he went to the scrap pie they walked out and he looked among all the rubble and all of the failures of life and all of the things that don't count for or account for naught he looked and finally picked somebody up and that bought it it was you that body was you and when he picked you up he saw far beyond what he had in his hand he saw the potential of your life as he saw it he saw it in the light of what it could be and we only look at the life as what it is but you know the hammer this in all of them begins with just a piece of scrap iron but before they are a useful tool they've got to be introduced to the fire because they've got to change their shape they've got to change the way the form the looks the purpose all these things come within purview of the drawing board so when he when he begins when you begin with the hammer you begin with just a piece of scrap metal and your first thing that you do is you introduce it to the fire you introduce it to the fire the old bellows and the charcoal pit and all where is turn by hand generate oxygen to cause the charcoal to burn and he puts that scrap iron in there and finally that scrap iron that piece of waste you that were unsightly ungodly unprepared you came and jesus did wonders and marvels in your life hallelujah thank god for what he's done for you for you and me and so the the the first of all that iron changes to a bright cherry red a bright cherry red and when it becomes to the right of the bright cherry red then it can be bent beaten and turned to anything in the world you know that's what god's got to do with you he first of all has got to take the wrinkles out hallelujah he's got to take the wrinkles out the imperfections he's got to remove the rust spots you've got the maroon the rough and the rusty spots all of those have to be removed and the purity of the fire the purity of the fire oh church let me tell you something today the holy ghost brings purity to the church it brings puritan lives it brings purity to communities it brings it brings purity to uh to neighborhoods it brings in all colleges and universities it brings cleansing to all of those places and to all of those people then as he carries it to the anvil that's still another sermon there i've got a sermon on on the end but the next trip is to the end and the anvil is where the hammer comes in it's the weight of the hammer and the muscle of the blacksmith that beats and forms the heated middle to be exactly cause i'd stand there as a child and i would see that piece of waste that throwback that reject all of a sudden i would see a beautiful plow coming out of that scrap a plow to till the soil a plow to plow the corn the plow to plow the cotton uh the peanuts and all of the other things that were there on the farm a beautiful plow would emerge from the heat and then there was another process that had to be done and that was called hardening hardening hardening i want to emphasize that if you leave the metal like it is you put it against the hard soil it will not last very long not even a day but if you reintroduce it to the fire if you reintroduce it to the fire and then you go through the hardening process and i want to talk about that a little bit we have or had rather i you know i've retired i think four times and i think my longest period i stayed retired was three weeks and that's not for me that's not for me i was thinking the other day my wife and i we prepared for retirement i retired when i was 51 and we were everything was fixed beautiful a two-story building down on lakes and then old boat and all the other stuff that i didn't need you know and but what is it but it's all there and we were going to live the life of raleigh and we'd walk over here get up early every morning and walk three miles watch the ducks the geese come out from the islands of the lake then we can go back to the house and sit down go back down sit down how many are gonna come out tomorrow i don't know but let's go back and see that lasted two weeks and i looked at her i said this time was his retirement's kind of rough hey i i went back and asked for my job back all right let me tell you what i don't know what you've got to be to retire but it's not for me folks i'll tell you but anyway we do i want to talk about one of our one of our employees we bought the millwork company there in moultrie probably 40 50 years ago and among the people that we bought was an old hillbilly from west virginia his name was leroy moore and leroy was the cleanup man and catchment or whatever whatever anybody else did not want to do leroy was that man but i found out soon that he was brilliant he was brilliant and i wanted to know exactly how to hard metal where i could make it last we had a lot of uses for metal in this in this mill workshop and i went to him one day and i said mr leroy and i had read that scripture you know before where the axe head came off and fell in the water you remember that story how many remember that where the egg's head came off fell in the water and the prophet came back and spoke to it and it swam and i asked him i said mr leroy have you ever seen iron swims yep you have well then you and the man i want to talk to because the problem i have is i can't get my iron to swim whatever i do i can't get my iron swim have you ever seen it swim well hold tight we're going to talk about it i'm going to tell you about it you're going to learn something here this morning he said you'll be out here tomorrow give me a time and said i'll show you how the iron swims and i could hardly wait that night i told my wife i said i'm going to see iron swim tomorrow are you crazy how is iron going to swim what what's going to happen i said i don't know but mr leroy said he going to make the iron swim and i'll be there to see it and nicole came to the office and said i'm ready for you and i went back and when i approached the smith shop i could see that red hot metal in the forge i could see it cherry red just as hot as it could be nearly to the point of melting and so he said to me he said now you want to see this so now you get ready and when i get these knives out of this fire now you got to understand here now we're still in the fire so when i get these knives out of this fire i'm going to put them in this tempering oil and said when as soon as you see me drop them in there you put the lid on it and jump on top of it all right that is the deal and as soon as those knives were thrown in that bit in that pit i heard it [Music] for several seconds and those knives were floating like they was in the uh had wings on them all over that vat of oil and finally they just sunk and fell and so he took them out and laid them on the cooling table and he said now they're ready they're ready you see we made some of the moldings and trims for some of the most prestigious homes in the southeast in that shop we had the only shop in about a 13-state area that could cut a 12-inch ground mold and that man would make every one of those knives you'd throw it on paper and he'd carve it out of iron and the iron did swim and the iron did swim you see before it really becomes iron it's got to swim if it's going to hold up that's reason why your pocket knife and so many other things are case hardened or very hard now i'm going to move on just a little further this morning because it's important that we see what god is trying to say to us here now the time that this scripture was given was 747 bc to 674 somewhere in that range was when jeremiah prophesied now that's 600 roughly 50 75 years before christ came now this world the world that jeremiah knew was in trouble they had four national failures including the division of the kingdom and the world was in a terrible shape threats of going to egypt and all of this trouble was was troubling this nation and this people what they had revival pastor they had three revivals during this time i want to talk to you to just a few minutes this morning about what we need folks we need revival we need revival we need a revival that will sweep these churches throughout america and arise away and arouse us from our place of complacency to get us doing the things that we know to do we need to begin to turn the old anvils of fire and get the fires burning on the altar we need to begin to use our offers of prayer until we see flames bursting forth out of this and see it real fire in the church we need a revival folks [Applause] i have never seen our nation in the condition that we're in today and i'm sure you would agree it is it is pathetic it's awful i said to a committee of people several bankers just recently two or three weeks ago i said to them they asked me i said what project are you going to from here and i said this to them i said i really don't know i am so confused i am so illusioned till i honestly don't know where i'll go what church will be built or what will be done because of the state that our government and our finances are in every person in that room agreed with me nobody had a sound mind nobody knew what the answer was well you know i've got the answer i've got the answer the fire the fire the hammer hallelujah oh my let's talk about the hammer for just pastor you never did tell me how long i got to preach this morning i got you and i got you in a pickle now yeah i should ask you that for come help him i i don't know there's two you know i give two two kinds of sermons i give one till i get through then i give another one when i give out so i'm going to let you vote this morning which you want to do what you want to go ahead and and vote on this whether you want the choice of two a or b let me know here right quickly and i'll i'll see but i want to talk about the hammer just for a few minutes what an amazing do what an amazing do this church was largely built with a hammer those fuels you're sitting on were largely built with a hammer the house you live in was built with a hammer i could go on and on and the hammer touches every room in the home every room in the office the hammer has been everywhere but what it really does it puts things together it puts things it puts things together you start with the pile of lumber all shapes and sizes all widths and thicknesses all different but every one of them before it's placed must be placed by the hammer goddess i'm not god wasn't really talking alone about the hammer well he's talking about that the word was like that see the word was like that the word is something that will put you together folks how do you suppose i've been able to be saved for 70 something years god put it together i couldn't do it by myself i had all chances in the world i couldn't do it by myself when he got hold to me when something got hold to me when something got in my shoes beside my feet and something in my being was a he put me together again carter's in the business of putting folks back together he got problems today he's in the construction business he knows exactly what to do and i know one thing he'll put you together and he'll put you together where you'll last and where you will be good for a long time then i think about another hammer i think about the rock hammer here he said the hammer breaketh in pieces the rock the hammer breaketh in pieces the rock when i was on my second overseas tour i was in the air force for nearly eight eight plus years i guess we had a layover and was going to the northeast erica man thule labrador all of the warm places and sunshine beaches you know up there where it's 80 80 below zero and we had a few days and we were there in massachusetts west over air force base waiting to be flown out we went to new york now you know i'm comfortable and i'm scared of big things then i answer texas and me when it comes to business i i i don't confess none of that but we walked down the street there in new york and all of a sudden i run up on a building it's the tallest thing i had ever seen in my life i couldn't even throw my head back like this and see the top of it it was the empire state building you know when texas people come to new york they call it tall they confess it up you might have heard this the whole story that i heard when the new yorker went visit the texan in texas he told him he owns the texas said he owned 63 acres of land he said his ranch said no not in my ranch says it's in downtown dallas 63 acres and so the man invited him back to new york to see new york and he was impressed with these big nice buildings that were there and he said how long did it take him to build this building well he said it was 33 years 12 years this 12 15. and finally the old new yorker had grown tired of everything being bigger in texas than it was in new york and finally they came to the empire state building and the old man looked and said my lord how long did it take them to build this building the old new yorker said i don't know it wasn't there yesterday let me tell you something folks that building was built one stone at the time you couldn't build it with wood it was iron and mortar and stone those were the ingredients and the only ingredients that would endure and hold and that's exactly how they built the empire state building one stone at the time until they rose to the height that you could not even look upon it within with your neck turned back listen church i want to begin to see what this word will do for you as pastor indicated about the number of times that i have read this bible through i have been on this course for 64 years i read two hours every day in my bible i begin around five o'clock in the morning and i'm through the seven i have been doing that for all of these years every church that i built and pastored i taught that church read your bible read your bible you know what my message for you is this morning read read your bible it'll do wonders for you folks it'll do great mighty things for you the word will do just great things i don't know how long i'll continue to on the journey that i'm on but i do know this that i don't have no more plans for retirement i don't have any plans for retirement but i do have plans to put together a number of books that i already have in progress at least ten it'll take me well over a year or two to write i probably will be around 100 when i get finished with it but i will continue to read this bible with fervency and diligence as long as i live daily will i look at its pages but let me tell you something wonderful about this experience it's when i read this book when i stop in revelation and move to genesis it's like a brand new book i've never been there before i record a scripture every day i call it a golden nugget and i think on that thought all day long it has been rewarding and blessing to my life and i want to tell you something else that i have a lovely lady that has stood by my side for 70 almost 70 70 i get crooked how many 72 she has stood by my side 72 years [Applause] we haven't fussed in quarrel but we've had a good time serving the lord i would not change one thing if i could change anything i wouldn't make a single change i would still start earlier with the word that's the only thing i regret missing is those years when i didn't read it like i read it now listen church i thank you for the opportunity of speaking to you today i've been wanting to come a long time but we have been extremely busy and that's not a real excuse we just should have done it before but i'd like to come back you know sometime i have i have already written one books been published and it's called from deficits to dividends ucpas may want to get you a copy of that people in the accounting business but it's not about what you're thinking about money it's about the church from deficits to dividends but i are i understand that this church and its influence what a what a credit belongs to the wiggins family you have been here a long time your testimony is is just enormous all the missionaries that you're supporting pastor this is beyond anything that i can comprehend almost what y'all god has that allowed you all to do and the people that pastor it have been down to earth just down to earth they've been to our house we have a place there have places where preachers come rest and relax for a week or whatever you know and they came and old pastor wiggins and i had the time of our life together i could tell you some tales about that but i'll just save those when i come back but listen my thought and my reason for being here today is to let you know that you can be as enduring as the hammer and you can be as effective as the hammer you can put it together and you can help help others to put their lives together so i ask you today to follow the leadership of these good people give god the credit always give god the credit and i'll tell you what he'll be good and kind to you thank you pastor thank you [Applause] hallelujah come on let's all stand and thank the man of god for the word today hallelujah hallelujah 92 years and not retired jesus first place you know of him you believe in him but he's not really first place you need to make that decision maybe some things have happened in recent weeks months that you know you need to confess to the lord how many will acknowledge by an uplifted hand you know there's some areas that you need his covering the blood covering over your life you need his forgiveness you need his mercy and grace if you want prayer i want you to lift your hand right now god bless you for those hands growing up you've heard a message on the hammer and god wants to take your life and remake your life
