[Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] good morning everyone this sunday and for the next two weeks we have a very special crucifix here in the cathedral it will be there in the baptismal fonts this crucifix was made in 2003 by a ukrainian man called vitali saboronsky and on easter sunday of 2003 he felt that jesus was calling him to carve this cross out of ukrainian oak and bring it to all of the capitals and the major cities of the world for 30 years so that in 2033 when we commemorate the 2000 anniversary of the crucifixion and the resurrection the cross would have gone throughout the world to pray for peace and unity and so far it's been in 46 countries all over europe in many other areas around the world and we have been planning already like months ago because cardinal dolan is very good friends with archbishop boris goodziak from the ukrainian church to bring it here to the cathedral so now during this crisis uh we were able to get it this week and we are going to be praying uh for ukraine to that cross that means so much to pray for peace to pray for union and we will also be having a collection box throughout these times to send to catholic relief services to help with all of the refugees and all of the problems in the ukraine so it's despite the situation it's a very powerful cross with many testimonies and now all the more we have to remember that jesus in the cross is in charge of everything and we have to join our prayers with the ukrainian people thank you good morning today we celebrate the first sunday of lent our celebrant is his eminence timothy cardinal dolan the archbishop of new york you may download the worship program at www.strixcathedral.org live please join in singing the entrance hymn lord who throughout these [Music] r [Music] lord [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of a holy lent that we may grow an understanding of the riches hidden in christ jesus and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever what is it they're in florida a reading from the book of deuteronomy [Music] moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramaian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and he brought us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust [Music] shall affliction come in for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways be with me lord wherever [Music] [Applause] [Music] you shall trample down the lion with me [Music] i will set him on heart because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and for you [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scriptures say no one who believes in him will be put to shame for is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by this by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish at this and this all will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written you will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord [Music] i have brought you the first fruits of the soil which you o lord have given me those are the words of moses are reading in the bible this morning his instruction to the people of israel as what they should say to the lord when they offer him their best i've brought you the first fruits of the soil which you o lord have given me to give god our best to sacrifice to the lord as a sign of our praise and our trust that's sort of a providential message no anytime but especially this first sunday of lent the message of giving back to god sacrificing giving ourselves away in love that's one of the three classical lenten practices we've got prayer we've got acts of self-denial and then we've got that giving ourselves away our best back to god and his people you know i can remember i think i was in seventh grade and sister gemma had all of us read god's little acre by pearl buck can you remember it it left a big impression on me and i if you've read it here's the line see her father was a christian missionary in china a man of deep faith and they had a farm in china and it was a small farm maybe about 20 25 acres but her dad made a vow he would pick out at every every season when they were planting the seed her father would take one acre and say lord this acre belongs to you and you alone and whatever it produces i'm going to give back to you and the author says though that as the harvest began and as her father could kind of see which acres were bringing about the best produce he would move god's acre in other words if god's little acre was shown an abundant harvest he'd quickly decide to dedicate another acre to the lord that's a temptation isn't it that we like to hedge our bets we like to fudge when it comes to what we give back our best to the lord see it's it sounds a little uh counterintuitive and we we wouldn't think to say it except that god has told us this about himself in revelation god is jealous of us he loves us so much we belong to him and to him alone see and he wants us all to himself he wants us to to give it all back to him he's jealous of us that's how much he loves us why why does he want us to give him our best he sure doesn't need it it's his anyway he does he doesn't want any bribes okay he he just wants us to give him our best because he knows not that it's good for him it's good for us and when we give ourselves away sacrificially back to him and other people guess what he gives us even more because god can never be outdone in generosity so we give it all to him i was taught as a boy every morning simply to say all for the most sacred heart of jesus giving everything that day the good the bad the fears the happiness the joys the sorrows the problems we give it all we give it all to him now look sit back and relax this is not a sermon about giving money to the church okay could be it's a nice little lead up to it but i'm not talking about that uh yeah that's a way we can sacrifice and give back to god but god wants god wants us all wants it all he wants our love he wants our trust he wants our talents he wants our dedication he wants our service he wants our duty and that can come in a lot of different ways i remember the first time i was up at hyde park you all have been there where franklin d roosevelt had his home and if you go to the little village the little town square in hyde park you will see as many towns have you'll see a monument to those soldiers from hyde park who had died in service to their country during world war ii and there on the list is franklin d roosevelt and i said to the guide well fdr didn't fight in the war and give his life and they said ah but he died for his country he worked so hard to win to bring about victory that he gave his very life and we put his name here too see that service that dedication that sacrifice can come in a lot of ways i think we got two examples here this morning father enrique explained to you about the ukrainian cross over in the corner a magnificently sculptured cross that providentially we had signed up to have to be venerated here it's over in this side chapel we had already about six months ago signed up and now it's so pertinent as ukraine is pouring out its blood you see the greatest the greatest example of giving back giving our best in sacrifice what moses is talking about today is jesus on the cross greater love than this nobody has than to give his life for another we got another one okay this is uh detective libretti stand up do you do you all can you remember detective dominic libretti six weeks ago took seven bullets bringing down a shooter and protecting his fellow cops and look at him today hallelujah dominic way to go he's he's here with his wife and his son and his folks and his godmother and godfather and we're glad you're here and we want you back a lot i just had him over to the house because they were kind enough to bring some italian pastries and anyway now over there he had his jacket off and he showed me his tattoos of the blessed mother and saint michael the archangel and padre pio on his own i thought i was looking at the ceiling of the sistine chapel my lord a man of faith here okay and there's another example of giving our best pouring ourselves out in love for another sometimes the spiritual writers refer to this as the law of the gift you ever heard of that the law of the gift here it is we are at our best we are acting most like god wants us to when we give ourselves away to another in sacrificial love now most of the time the law of the gift can apply to a lot of ways jesus detective libretti most of the time we apply it folks to marriage when a man and a woman give what's best in themselves in sacrificial love to another in marriage and you see god gives back because most of the time not all the time that love then is shown in the new life of their little baby you see i think one of the most beautiful prayers that kind of shows this is that of saint ignatius loyola the founder of the jesuits and he wrote his famous prayer called the sushi pay and here's how it goes saint ignatius prayed take lord receive all my liberty my memory my understanding my entire will all that i have and possess you've given it all to me anyway to you o lord now i return it all is yours dispose of me holy according to your will give me only your love and your grace and that is enough for me i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he is sitting in the heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who is spoken through the prophets believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let us pray for our holy father pope francis and for our shepherd timothy cardinal dolan for all bishops priests priests deacons religious and those who guide us in faith that they may be holy and effective in their mission to draw all people to christ let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the church that through fasting prayer and almsgiving we may help to satisfy the physical and spiritual hunger of our neighbors around the world we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who suffer from hunger or malnutrition day in and day out that they may know the grace of god through the efforts of those working to assist them let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for peace around all the nations we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us as we face temptations great and small that we may turn to god for support and strength let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of our beloved dead that they may enjoy the fullness of eternal life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we seek the powerful intercession of mary our mother and of saint patrick our patron as we make these and all of our prayers through christ our lord amen [Music] oh [Music] us we pray [Music] oh oh us we pray oh [Music] r [Music] is [Music] pray now that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god our almighty father give us the right disposition oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time of lent through christ our lord the lord be with you amen lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord heavenly father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by by overcoming all the snares of that ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal easter feast of heaven and so with the company of angels and saints we sing to him of your praises without end we acclaim [Music] oh is [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it but this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] until therefore as we celebrate this memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and timothy our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles saint patrick and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] a [Music] from [Music] years peace [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always can we do it let us offer a sign of peace [Music] is jesus is [Music] hearts [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] is [Music] r [Music] so long and my soul after [Music] is [Music] yes [Music] oh god [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] my tears [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] two [Music] [Music] so is [Music] me [Music] yes [Music] oh [Music] [Music] so me [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] god
