Sunday Mass for December 26 2021 with Father Dave

[Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you this is not a mass for christmas if you clicked on this mask looking for christmas you actually need to click on another one i'm gonna try to make that appear somewhere up there this is a mass for those who are keeping sunday holy the day after christmas diane do we have to go to church two days in a row we do and god bless you for doing that and saying you know you came to jesus yesterday on christmas and you really meant it and you're doing it by showing up today for the times that as we celebrate the feast of the holy family for the times that we way we weren't holy in our family or didn't follow jesus so faithfully let's ask him to forgive us or if he had too much christmas eggnog or something like that let's ask him to forgive us as we come to him on the feast of the holy family getting his grace that we can be more of a holy family to him and to each other i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and jew my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone of the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray oh god who were pleased to give us the shining example of the holy family graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity and so in the joy of your house delight one day and eternal rewards through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the first book of samuel in those days hannah conceived and at the end of her term for her son whom she called samuel since she had asked the lord for him the next time her husband elkanah was going up with the rest of his household to offer the customary sacrifice to the lord and to fulfill his vows hannah did not go explaining to her husband once the child is weaned i will take him to appear before the lord and to remain there forever i will offer him as a perpetual nazarite once samuel was weaned hannah brought him up with her along with a three-year-old bull an ether a flower and a skin of wine and presented him at the temple of the lord in shiloh after the boy's father had sacrificed the young bull hannah his mother approached eli and said pardon my lord as you live my lord i am the woman who stood near you here praying to the lord i prayed for this child and the lord granted my request now i in turn give him to the lord as long as he lives he shall be dedicated to the lord hannah left samuel there the word of the lord thanks be to god blessed are they who dwell in your house o lord blessed are they who dwell in your house oh lord how lovely is your dwelling place o lord of hosts my soul yearns and pines for the courts of the lord my heart and my flesh cry out for the living god blessed are they who dwell in your house o lord happy are they who dwell in your house continually they praise you happy the men whose strength you are their hearts are set upon the pilgrimage blessed are they who dwell in your house o lord o lord of hosts hear our prayer hearken o god of jacob o god behold our shield and look upon the face of your anointed are they who dwell in your house o lord a reading from the letter of saint paul to the colossians brothers and sisters put on as god's chosen ones holy and beloved heartfelt compassion kindness humility gentleness and patience bearing with one another and forgiving one another if one has a grievance against another as the lord has forgiven you so must you also do and over all these put on love that is the bond of perfection and let the peace of christ control your hearts the peace into which you were also called in one body and be thankful let the word of christ dwell in you richly as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another singing psalms hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to god and whatever you do in word or indeed do everything in the name of the lord jesus giving thanks to god the father through him wives be subordinate to your husbands as is proper in the lord husbands love your wives and avoid any bitterness toward them children obey your parents in everything for this is pleasing to the lord fathers do not provoke your children so they may not become discouraged the word of the lord thanks be to god alleluia alleluia open our hearts o lord to listen to the words of your son alleluia alleluia the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord each year jesus parents went to jerusalem for the feast of passover when he was 12 years old they went up according to the festival custom after they had completed its days they were returning the boy jesus remained behind in jerusalem but his parents did not know it thinking that he was in the caravan they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances but not finding him they returned to jerusalem to look for him after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers listening to them and asking them questions and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and at his answers when his parents saw him they were astonished and his mother said to him son why have you done this to us your father and i have been looking for you with great anxiety and he said to them why were you looking for me did you not know that i must be in my father's house but they did not understand what he said to them he went down with them and came to nazareth as and was obedient to them and his mother kept all these things in her heart and jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before god and man the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ okay so today's gospel this crazy story of where they left jesus in the temple first i just want to say if you're clicking right on the homily uh this is not the homily or the mass for christmas this is for the sunday after christmas so if you want to watch the christmas one because you're still you're clicking on this on christmas day evening for christmas somehow there's going to be a link up there this is for the sunday after christmas yes we have to go to church two days in a row jesus and mary and joseph have to go to church and they leave jesus in the temple do you have loved ones that you could wish you could just leave in church and not bring home don't do that they're your family right you got to love them what is going on here and how is there anything here that can help us with our families first let's ask have you ever been surprised by your family in a good way diane jess they both say yes right i have to have you ever been surprised by family in a bad way right you're going on your first date and there your parents are walking around the block looking at you holding hands and you're like what are you doing right or you bring your boyfriend or girlfriend over and that's when your parents decide to show the baby pictures like really like that's really making me look good right now right or all kinds of ways your family surprises you in ways that are that aren't ideal right you're looking for a peaceful quiet night and then your extended family comes in or they throw stuff on you there's issues in their family and now their issue is for you and all you want to do is be quiet but now they put their stuff on you what do you do when you're surprised by family in negative ways and how do you how do you deal with that and could this gospel give us any help i believe that it can for what it's worth right so jesus goes to the temple with his parents but that first reading that diane read we're given that reading for a reason i think it teaches us how jesus was thinking how so so hannah prays for a child right hannah is she goes to church and people think she's drunk she's just like this old lady and there's lots of old ladies around churches always right and this old lady is like just like crying and mouthing stuff quietly and the prophet eli thinks that she's drunk he's like get out of here and she's like i'm not drunk i'm praying i'm praying for a child and eli's like well may be done to you according to god's word and she goes home conceives with her husband and then years later brings the child back to god and says hey you gave me this child i'm going to give them back to you and that does not mean that you can drop all of your kids in church right no you can bring treats for dogs and gifts for kids but you have to hold on to your own kids they're yours you got to deal with them actually sometimes people do that people when they fight with their they're fighting in their family and they're like father dave would you talk to my kid i'm like well no it's your kid god gives you the tools to solve the problems with them you can't be like they're in trouble bringing the father dave that's not fair you guys solve that in your family i'll give you some advice and pray for you but they're your kids good luck right i didn't get married god bless you so anyway hannah brings this child who was a gift from god and brings him back to god because the child's supposed to be completely dedicated to god and of course is jesus completely dedicated to god yes or no yes right but what happens jesus and mary and joseph get into a fight right it's a polite way of saying it but there's a little spit here and like mary brings saint joseph into it right you ever hear your mom say wait till your father comes home right you ever say that jess says it all the time too used to say that too wait till your father comes up this is what mary does like a good jewish mother son why have you done this to us your father and i have been your father and i have been looking for you with great anxiety right hopefully she didn't have an accident like that she brings the poor saint joseph in it right poor saint joseph he's the only one who does anything wrong in the whole family but brings them into it and they have a fight and what does jesus say jesus says didn't you know i have to be in my father's house why did he say that jesus thinks in the category of the bible if you want to know what jesus thinks about something read the scripture that's why you hear me talk all the time about reading the bible the bible is how christ thinks the holy spirit breathed the scripture it says in the second timothy 3 16 the holy the scripture is god breathed reverse everything i think in a second but the holy spirit inspired this it's how christ thinks jesus knows there's a story of a child given to a couple in response to prayer and that that child is brought to the temple and then will forever live there we don't know this but it's quite possible that when jesus at 12 years old was brought to the temple he thought joseph and mary were doing what hannah did and that they were bringing him to the temple to leave him there because he is to be completely dedicated to his father and so when they come back a couple days later he's like why are you shocked like don't you know i have to be here he probably thought and i don't know we'll tell us one day but he probably thought that he was like samuel he was completely dedicated to the father and his parents mary and joseph they just knew that what the scripture tells us is they didn't know that so what does jesus do does he like put his foot down and say well tough see you wouldn't want to be a good luck no actually it's pretty cool it says they did not understand what he said to them he went down with them and came to nazareth and was obedient to them and his mother kept all these things pondering them she kept thinking about this is what it in the greek she kept thinking about these events right mary didn't understand herself at that moment to be doing what hannah did although jesus probably did but he adapts and he goes with them so something old and something new to help you with family so many of you remember when i gave the talk and how to love your enemies and i give you that little prayer remember that prayer diane bless them change me right so for all of our new subscribers i'm going to go real fast uh sorry for all of you who've been watching for a time and know this but once upon a time i was in a car accident hit by a guy drunk driver no license no insurance luckily everyone lived but set my life back a bunch and i was like raging on the inside and uh i had all this anger and i'm not an angry guy my best friend sometimes gets pretty angry and we make a good you know we're a good group of friends because he's ticked off about something and i'm usually not but i was like raging and i didn't know what to do with all this anger and so i went to see my spiritual director i'm like look i need to get these thoughts out of me because i keep getting like interrupted by them and i keep dwelling on all of this stuff and he said to me all right dave whenever you think about this guy i want you to say a very simple prayer i'm like dude tell me the prayer he says you may have to pray this prayer 500 times a day until you pray it only five times a day i'm like tell me that prayer he says it's a powerful prayer you're going to have to keep saying that dude tell me the prayer father he said whenever you think about that guy whenever his thought comes into your head i want you to say lord bless him change me i'm like i'm not praying that prayer bless him change me why should i do that it needs to be lord you change him and bless me my spirit director said no he said the bible says god's god prunes the son whom he loves that god's blessing coming into someone's life will not allow them to continue to do evil but it's corrective right so god blessing that man would not enable him to drive without a license or insurance or drunk it'll give him opportunities to change and if he doesn't he's going to end up in jail unable to harm anybody else and that'll be a blessing if you think of like what god did for the devil god still loves the devil even though the devil hates god so out of love for the devil god creates a place for it where it can't harm you know him he doesn't destroy the devil he loves it he's trying to get it to repent the devil won't do that so one my spirit told me like ask for god to bless that guy and he says dave you need the change so that you can love him as christ loves your enemies and i'm like whatever and it worked i prayed that prayer constantly and in about three months time like lord bless him change me bless him change me i'll be sitting there in class i was it was in the seminary when this took place i was in there a class my mind wanted this accident i would start to brood on it and i'd say lord bless him change me and in about three months time like poisoned out of a wound all that anger just left i got peace and asked god to pray for him and one day i'll meet him hopefully in paradise right maybe we'll go we'll go racing and cars together right why bring that up that's the old the new jesus is interrupted by his family and there's a what he is asking his his mom to do and saint joseph is to think in god's categories about what's happening when people interrupt you and they come into your life and family comes in with some of the difficulties that family can put on you or bosses or things like that essentially there's a way to engage the interruptions that happen with the mind of christ and i think not just praying for your enemies if you take that little prayer lord bless them change me when your family comes over and they're you know you want a little bit of quiet and now they're making noise and they're around you can be like or you say lord bless them change me right or maybe things aren't so great you know in your marriage at the moment right maybe there's some tension there right and you want to get over something that they did you told them that you forgave them but you're still tempted to dwell on it and you know that that's not how jesus wants you to be right you don't want to you want to forgive and be forgiven but it's hard sometimes not to dwell on hurts because the people who we love we expect more from and when they don't love us back rightly then it hurts all the more so what can you do because they come into the kitchen or the living room and you're there and you want to like bra give them the cold shoulder well don't do that right jesus adapts and he goes home with his family so like say take the mind of christ lord bless you know my husband bless my wife you know bless them change me and then be present and trust that jesus will help scrape away some of that hurt and those bad memories right where a lot of people bear wounds from their parents they did stuff to them they weren't the perfect parents maybe they were terrible parents right and that can affect people for many years but jesus wants you to be free lord bless them change me you can do this for coworkers you can do this for for people that do you harm for people that ask stuff from you and people that put burdens on you you can take this and make this a way to live this new year frankly i do this at times like my friends here they see it like i'll go to across the street to go to the rectory and i just maybe i gotta go to the bathroom and then someone pulls up in a car and they're like talking to me in the street telling me going on and on about their family situation or something like that and i'm like man i just got to go to the restroom and what am i doing in my head lord bless them change me bless her change me bless them change me and i'm present as their priest to help late at night it usually happens when i make spaghetti so i haven't eaten spaghetti in a while like i want to have dinner and my phone will go off and it's it's a sick call right someone needs last rites and i would wish i could tell you as a priest that we always like click our heels and joyfully go to the hospital to i'm like about to eat spaghetti and like craggly sitting there and she's about to eat dinner and then the phone goes off and it's time to go to the hospital and what do i do ah i kind of sigh and then what i say lord bless them change me and then my heart changes and then i go with a little more you know readiness and i'm always glad that i go when i'm coming back i'm not always glad when those interruptions come and i find this is a great way to live not just praying for your enemies but help with family and even priests to preach too long in an online mass the day after christmas so take a page from jesus's book learn this year to think as christ thinks and when family presses upon you with all the difficulties approach them with his mind and ask him to bless them and change you i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come let's raise our prayers to almighty god that all members of the church through god's grace may be faithful to the mission entrusted to us by christ let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those in authority may be guided by the holy spirit in seeking justice for their people let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who suffer from chronic illness may be relieved and healed through the gracious mercy of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that this faith community may grow in faith hope and love transformed by grace to a life of gospel fidelity let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those who have died may experience perfect union with the father in heaven let us pray to the lord lord lord hear our prayer for our families let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the end coronavirus let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and now for those father almighty and eternal god for in the mystery of the word made flesh a new light of your glory is shown upon the eyes of our mind so that as we recognize in him god made visible we may be caught up through him in love of things invisible and so with angels and dark angels with thrones and dominions with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing to him of your glory as without end we acclaim
