a christian please stand to greet our celebrant [Music] blessed be the lord me the lord the god of mercy the god who says [Music] he will protect me from their wicked hands [Music] blessed be the lord the god of mercy the god who sings i shall not fear [Music] nor stand alone before the light of day [Music] the god of mercy the god who says [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you now and always we come together to celebrate the eucharist we are mindful of god's goodness god's presence each one of us he gathers us together to celebrate let's also be mindful of those who will watch the mass that we are recording that we are united in god's love and in god's name we welcome deacon tullio osof today with us he's part of the new parish of saint paul the sixth as we begin we recognize god's presence among us and ask for his mercy his kindness his forgiveness that we celebrate these great mysteries well [Music] christ have mercy christ [Music] lord have mercy [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] peace we praise you we bless you we adore you we give thanks for your great glory lord [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayers [Music] have mercy on us [Music] [Music] christ with the holy spirit in the glory [Music] is [Music] we are gathered in god's name as god's people let us pray lord our god you teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you we ask this to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah thus says the lord cursed is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength in flesh whose heart turns away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in a lava waste a salt and empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is the lord he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit in the word of the lord [Music] who [Music] nor walks in the way of sinners nor sins [Music] and night he's like a tree planted near running water that heals his fruit in due season and whose leaves never fade whatever he does prospers [Music] not so the wicked [Music] which the wind drives away forth the lord watches over the way [Music] is [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some among us say there is no resurrection of the dead if the dead are not raised neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised your faith is vain you are still in your sins then those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only have we hoped in christ we are the most pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord [Music] rejoice and be glad your reward will be great [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you jesus came down with the twelve and he stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all judea and jerusalem and the coastal region of tyre and sidon and raising his eyes toward his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and denounce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leave for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are filled now for you will be hungry woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep woe to you but all speak well of you for their ancestors through the false prophets in this way the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ in whom do we place our trust and hope for everlasting happiness this is a question that forces us to provide a personal answer is it in ourselves in our strength and wisdom in our wealth and material possessions the answer is found very clearly in the first reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah in the responsorial psalm and in say luke's gospel blessed is the one who trusts in the lord blessed is the man who hope in the lord each one of us knows in whom and in what we trust it is a personal right and choice it is a freedom and at the same time a challenge our lives happiness and our future are dependent on that particular choice as consumers we think about buying the hottest newest item in the market if one has the means one can buy his or her way into a state of instant gratification even happiness our consumption habits can rectify our deficits and doubts about our self-esteem and public image am i physically attractive am i successful because i drive expensive a sports car and have a six figure salary am i successful because i made a lot of money this year in the market do people perceive us as strong and confident we rely on the material things of the world as if that is all that there is to achieve and retain will the lord condemn people who have money and food are those people who laugh and those about whom we speak will be condemned as well being a christian means trusting god above all else and following jesus example of unconditional love and self-sacrifice jesus does not say that material goods are evil on the country a christian should not view them as an absolute end but rather should be focused on living a balanced life alert or not being attached to material goods and grateful to god for his generosity and abundance but above all being ready and willing to help those who are in need in practice this translation to put in our heart mind and soul in god's first and when we do so we could not ignore the needs of those who are destitute marginalized and suffering which is how we measure our own love to god let's remember that love of our neighbor begins with those around us showing them our mercy patience kindness understanding compassion and forgiveness just as saint paul tells us in his famous and popular definition of love that we find in the letter of the first letter of corinthians chapter 13. our lord aims precisely at that inner attitude of putting things and people before god that all of us have within us therefore we should ask for the gift of wisdom to do god's will and what is that gift of wisdom it is the art the spiritual science of living lives according to god's will an example of love and self-sacrifice living christ's example and self-sacrifice means living the beatitudes that we found in today's gospel which are the trace of jesus personality and life blessed are those or blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are not weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and denounce your name as evil on account of the son of man in proclaiming the beatitudes jesus asked us to follow him and to travel with him along the path of love the path alone leads us to internal life and true happiness it is not an easy journey it is a great inconvenience to follow jesus yet the lord promises us his grace and they who will never abandon us we face so many challenges in life poverty pandemics anxiety humiliation the struggle for justice persecutions the difficulty of daily conversion and the effort to remain faithful to our call to holiness and the latest the reorganization of our new parish saint paul the six among others but if we open our hearts to jesus and allow him to be part of our lives and we share our joy and sorrows with him then we will experience the peace and joy that only god whose infinite love can give the beatitudes of jesus are innovative they present a pattern of happiness contrary to what is usually communicated by the media and by the prevailing worldly wisdom a worldly way of thinking defines us outrageous that god became one of us and died on the cross according to the logic of this world those whom jesus proclaimed blessed are regardless useless and cast aside what is glorified in our society today is success at any cost dishonesty affluence the arrogance of power and self-affirmation at the expense of others and the danger to alienate god may we trust in god not his creation to lead us into his kingdom and to keep us on his path may we who are in need of god find in him eternal life and true happiness amen oh um together we profess what we believe i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became a man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen mindful of god's love for each one of us we offer these prayers petitions with confidence for all who serve the gospel that the beatitudes be boldly proclaimed let us pray to the lord r lord for our prayer for peacemakers that they be strengthened in the spirit of god let us pray to the lord r for those who mourn the loss of a heaven and earth through christ our lord for by your word you created the world and you govern all things in harmony you gave us your word made flesh as our mediator he has spoken your words to us and called us to follow him for he is the way that leads to you the truth that sets us free the life that fills us with gladness therefore now and for ages unending with all the angels and saints we proclaim your glory and in joyful celebration acclaim [Music] are full [Music] is he [Music] you are indeed holy and to be glorified o lord our god for you love the whole human race and always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love when as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer that is on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you indeed of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in the same way when the supper was ended he took the chalice he gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] until you come until [Music] therefore father most holy as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of all blessing look with favor on the offering of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of your spirit of love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion by our partaking of this mystery almighty god and father give us life through your spirit grant that we may be conformed to the image of your son and confirm us in the bond of communion together with francis our pope leonard our bishop with all bishops priests and deacons and your entire people grant that the faithful of the church looking into the signs of the times by the light of faith may constantly devote themselves to the service of the gospel keep us attentive to the needs of all people that sharing their grief and their pain their joy and their hope we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation and go forward with them along the way of your kingdom remember our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the peace of christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and martyrs and all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through christ jesus your son for through him and with him and in him o god
