when christ had been baptized in the jordan river and as the holy spirit descended upon him you solemnly declared him your beloved son grant that your children by adoption reborn of water and the holy spirit may always be pleasing to you we ask this through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord here is my servant whom i uphold my chosen one with whom i am pleased upon whom i have put my spirit he shall bring forth justice to the nations not crying out not shouting not making his voice heard in the street a bruised reed he shall not break and a smoldering wick he shall not quench until he establishes justice on the earth the coastlines will wait for his teaching i the lord have called you for the victory of justice i have grafted you by the hand i formed you and set you as a covenant of the people a light for the nations to open the eyes of the blind to bring out prisoners from confinement and from the dungeon those who live in darkness the word of the lord lord my soul o lord my god you are great indeed you are clothed with majesty and glory robed in life as with a clock you have spread out the heavens like a tent cloth you have constructed your palace upon the waters you make your clouds your chariot you travel on the wings of the wind you make the winds your messengers and flaming fire your ministers oh bless the lord my soul how manifold are your works oh lord [Music] in wisdom you have brought them all the earth is full of your creatures the sea also great and wide in which are schools without number or living things both small and great they look to you to give them food in due time when you give it to them they gather it when you open your hand they are filled with good things if you take away their breath they perish and return to the dust when you send forth your spirit they are created and you renew the face of the earth [Music] a reading from the acts of the apostles peter proceeded to speak to those who gathered in the house of cornelius saying in truth i see that god shows no partiality rather in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him you know the word that he sent to the israelites as he proclaimed peace through jesus christ who is lord of all what has happened all over judea beginning in galilee after the baptism that john preached how god anointed jesus in nazareth with the holy spirit and power he went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil for god was with him the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] john said one mightier than i is coming he will baptize you with the holy spirit [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord the people were filled with expectation and all were asking in your hearts whether john might be the christ john answered them all saying i am baptizing you with water the one mightier than i is coming i am not worthy to loosen the thongs of the sandals he will baptize you with the holy spirit and fire after all the people have been baptized and jesus also had been baptized and was praying heaven opened the holy spirit descended upon him bodily formed like a dove and a voice came down from heaven you are my beloved son with you i am well pleased the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ john the baptist has declared one mightier than i is coming that one is jesus christ whose birth we celebrate in this christmas season and on this feast today of the baptism of the lord we bring to conclusion the christmas season in the church but as we look at jesus and consider his baptism today we realize that the birth of jesus must take place within us and we must give birth to jesus in our lives because we have been baptized in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit isaiah in the first reading recognizing that one who is the servant of god will come and that one will come and bring justice a right relationship with god a relationship with god that has been healed a relationship with god that is whole a relationship with god in which all people will be invited into and the one that comes from god this servant of god bringing justice will heal and people who are blind will see and the one that comes from god this servant of god will be light for the nations the servant of god is jesus christ born for us saint peter tells us in this passage we have from acts of the apostles that this jesus who has come from god in god and by the holy spirit will do good in the world and we because of our own baptism because of our own birth because of the call of our baptism are to do good in the world also saint luke tells us that as jesus comes out of the water after his baptism and while he is praying hears you are my beloved son so we too in our baptismal call are people of prayer and we too have been called by god the father beloved children of god sons and daughters of god our father in heaven and we brothers and sisters of jesus because of our baptismal call must bring goodness to the world must serve one another must bring a new birth to the world by how we live our lives seeking justice an end of violence being peacemakers in our world because of jesus reaching out to those who are in need feeding the hungry clothing the sick educating people in goodness of god's goodness caring for the unborn at all times and helping people along their life taking care of orphans and widows helping with good care because of our baptismal call because of jesus brother to us all because we are adopted children of god our father in heaven in prayer and by the gift of the holy spirit we bring goodness into the world god's goodness let us be confirmed in that this christmas season let us because of the call of our baptism bring the father and the son and the spirit wherever we go trusting in the lord we profess our faith i believe in one god father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became a man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let us pray that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to the lord our god except o lord our god the offerings we have brought to honor the revealing of your beloved son so that the offering of our faithful service may be transformed into the sacrifice of kim who willed in his compassion to wash away the sins of the world he lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in the waters of the jordan you revealed with signs and wonders a new baptism so that through the voice that came down from heaven we might come to believe in your word dwelling among us and by the spirits descending in the likeness of a dove we might know that christ your servant has been anointed with the oil of gladness and sent to bring good news to the poor and so with the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth and before your majesty without end we acclaim holy holy holy [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord our god and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of your spirit you give life to all things and make them holy you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore lord our god we humbly implore you by your holy spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in the same way when the supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] until you come [Music] therefore lord our god as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the offering of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god bless joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth your servant francis our pope leonard our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people your son has gained for you listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have gathered before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world and to our departed sisters and brothers and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] with hope and in thanksgiving we pray in the words our savior has taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from all that is evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin safe from distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of the church and graciously grant peace and unity in accordance with your will for you live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always so [Music] the god of the world have mercy on [Music] us mercy on us [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the mm-hmm the baptized [Music] faithfully know [Music] christ is god's praise we see [Music] baptized in water sealed by the spirit marked with [Music] we are his children joyfully know god's praise we see [Music] i would ask you to just be seated for a few moment moments father tiano is here with us good afternoon everybody it's good to be with you my name is father christopher tiano and i am the new pastor of saint paul vi parish a parish formed by the former parishes of divine mercy christ the bread of life parish and our lady of mount carmel parish it's really exciting to be part of this new municipal model that's going across the church in hartford in the archdiocese of hartford it's really exciting to re reinterpret and re revision what we do as church here in hampden and what it means and how it all comes about and in excitement there's also the sense of fear of the unknown and fear of what we're doing and fear of of a lot of different things change is difficult change is difficult and if we're honest sometimes it's difficult and irksome you know talk to me i still can't find my boots and then it's snow talk to me i'm still not quite sure for the first couple days in hampden i wore black pants and a brown belt because i couldn't find my black belt change is always a challenge but you know saint paul vi our new patron said uh in 1975 in his in his apostolic exhortation on evangelization in the modern world the task of evangelizing all people constitutes the essential mission of the church it is a task and mission which the vast and profound changes of present-day society make all the more urgent evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the church her deepest identity she exists in order to evangelize pope francis quoted that quote in his document on evangelization and it's a quote from saint paul vi that you'll hear me quote an awful lot if you're looking for or what my raison d'etre as your pastor could possibly be it's to form a parish that evangelizes that brings the message of salvation to this city and beyond to this town and beyond that brings the message of salvation to a world that needs to hear this message we each week gather around the altar and welcome christ in the sacrament of the altar we each week celebrate the sacraments with one another we each week read and break open the word with one another and we have to bring though that word and sacrament to a community that so desperately needs to hear it that's what we're doing my friends that's what we're doing and i know it's frightening i know it's scary i know we're going to have to exit our comfort zones all of us every single one of us but isn't it wonderful when you look at the finished product of what we're doing we're bringing christ to the world we're bringing christ to the world i'm from derby um that's that town two exits away on on the parkway uh i grew up there i went to catholic school i went to catholic high school out of deference to those since this seems to be a notre dame in west haven town i won't tell you the name of the high school that i attended let's just say it begins with an f and ends with prep i went to school a college in washington dc i studied in seminary in boston my first assignment was saint anne's in new britain and i bring this up 1989. 1989 there were four masses a day there were five masses on the weekend there were [Music] there were three of us assigned to the parish and a fourth priest who lived with us it was a different world it was a totally different world saint ann's has now been incorporated into another parish and in a few years those two churches will be incorporated and turned to another parish it's just what we're doing across the archdiocese and it's all right it's all right after saint ann's i studied a bit in rome and i received a degree in spiritual theology like our former pastor following that i was editor of the catholic transcript i was uh also pastor of parishes at the same time following my stint at the transcript i served as pastor in our lady of victory in saint john vianney parishes in west haven following that i was pastor of the tourings and cluster of roman catholic parishes following that i was named the director of religious education and evangelization for the archdiocese and then i was sent to following my term finished there i was sent to derby as pastor every single assignment i've had has been either more than one parish or a parish and an archdiocesan job every single one that's been the reality of my life and it's exciting and it's wonderful and we're going to do great things now normally when i come into a parish i listen i listen i have meetings i have parish meetings but because of covet and especially because of omicron and and it's it is serious out there just be careful we we can't have i think safely the parish meetings so we're going to look towards probably zoom meetings for us to gather together and i'll give a few opportunities for those for different times for people to join together so we can talk to each other about the decisions that are going to have to be made in the future i am meeting with the finance counselors of each of the parishes as together the former parishes together so we can figure out where we are and to form a new finance council for saint paul the sixth parish and i am also meeting we're going to have a meeting with the former parish councils of each parish together so we can birth a parish council out of the three parish councils that are together it's it's a big task but it's not my task it's our task and we will do very well with our task when i was a kid as a seminarian i wasn't really a kid but when i was a young seminarian i remember coming here to saint rita's for a presentation we were downstairs and i think it was right after they renovated the downstairs to make a uh the the chapel and the meeting room behind the chapel and i remember sitting there looking around thinking this wouldn't be a bad place to be little did i know that it would also be coupled with our lady of mount carmel and blessed sacrament and ascension i don't think i'm pointing you in the right direction for any of them i think mount carmel is that way right yeah so it is it is what it is i'm excited to be able to work with my friend monsignor joe i am for excited to be able to work with father maurizio and the three of us and our deacons in the three in the three former parishes and all the faithful stewards we are going to do great stuff we have two wonderful schools we have a wonderful faith formation program we have great things going on already in handed and we're only going to build upon that i am asking you for two favors the first is immediate i'm in the white honda and i have to get to mount carmel to celebrate the five o'clock mass so let me out first when you see me but the second is is is more more just in general i'm not sure what we're going to do until i talk to people so i can't offer answers and i know people have questions and they're legitimate questions but i can't offer answers yet and for us to speculate amongst ourselves when decisions haven't been made when we haven't even spoken to each other is not a good thing to do so let nothing i've said tonight be misconstrued as a decision has been made you know let nothing that i said tonight be misconstrued as anything but you know we will have to make adjustments to what what we do and how we do it but until then until then uh we operate the way we've been operating at least for a while great to be here great to be here at christmas the church looks beautiful uh it's wonderful i think i'm on oh i'm being filmed i forgot uh i should have known i saw chris and that's that's his job it's great that's that's a wonderful thing as well we have reached out that's the one thing of this covet crisis that i think the catholic church has really embraced is our streaming of masses and streaming of services and i hope that in a in a very real way that that that really helps people embrace the faith in in a more profound way it's good to be with you tonight know that i am symbolically shaking each and every one of your hands and symbolically wiping my hand with um cleaner right afterwards and offering you some as well let's stay safe out there let's be uh let's let's protect one another during during this crisis and i'm so happy to be with you god bless thank you father tiano let us stand let us pray nourished with these sacred gifts we humbly entreat your mercy o lord our god that faithfully listening to your only begotten son we may be called children in name and in truth we ask this through christ our lord so a couple of announcements because i'm going on vacation tomorrow afternoon there's there there will be no mass during the week weekdays here at saint rita sunday masses yes but the weekday masses no so there's
