[Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] good morning and welcome to saint paul this is the day that the lord has made are you glad to be able to rejoice and be glad in it because i'm excited about being in the house of god today as we come to you virtually to bless the lord to worship the lord to honor the lord to exalt the lord hallelujah the saints of all used to see just so sweet it is to trust in jesus to trust him at his word then they said that he lives he lives he lives inside of me are you glad this morning that god lives even though things around us are dying we know that the savior lives we know that he's worthy we know that he's a honorable god we know that he's a mighty god we know that he's a powerful god we know that we can trust in god we know that we can love on god and he can love on us so we just bless them in this place because he's worthy this morning the reading of the word will be coming from john 1 starting at verse 1 and we read from the good news version and it says in the beginning the word already existed the word was with god and the word was god from the very beginning the word was with god through him god made all things not one things in creation was made without him the word was the source of life and this life brought light to people may we pray father god in the name of jesus we come before your presence because we honor you god and we need you in this place god because god you say whatever you would be that two would be gathered together in your name that you would be in the midst so we thank you for being in the midst of us right now in the name of jesus god god we pray for this service god that you would have your way god that you would speak your word god that the worship god would uh usher us into the atmosphere god for miracles god it will usher us into the atmosphere for liberation it would usher us into the atmosphere for salvation to take place god so we're just trusting you and we're believing you god we're believing you for the power we're believing you for the fire we believe in you for the anointing to fall fresh in this place like never before god so that we can see your mighty hand and we're blessing you right now in the name of jesus let your word go forth and accomplish everything that you intend god like never before god because someone is overwhelmed someone is overburdened but god you are the lifter god so we thank you god for lifting the burden right now in the name of jesus god and we're trusting you god that you're going to have your way in this place so bless us and keep us god and deliver us god and liberate us god and save us god and heal us god like only you can and so we thank you god we give you the praise god we give you the glory god we give you the honor god we are so glad that you are worshiping with us this morning virtually we thank you so much for taking the time to to visit with us this morning we are so grateful for what all god what god is doing in our lives and for our for us throughout this time and we're grateful that you took the time to be with us good morning saint paul family and all of our virtual family we are still striving to be the most caring covenant christian community the world has ever seen so we are grateful our doors are always open for you virtually we have things throughout the week that's going on we want to make sure that you tune in so that you stay connected all of you who are guests who are not actually partners of saint paul we're gonna ask that you put guests in this in the chat so that our virtual altar grateful for you as well you know this week i had a lot of time i made a lot of time to write i am writing my story and as i started to recall different things happening in my life and i started to think about it and i heard the lord say nothing [Music] that happened to you was wasteful i waste nothing and i sat there and pondered on that for a minute all the things that happened the good the bad the things that hurt the things that just challenged me none of it was for waste romans 28 8 says all things work together for the good of those who love the lord and i call according to his purpose so i had to think about that thing so everything that i i went through it made me stronger it made me kinder it made me more patient it made me more loving and it may have been something that i've been able to experience that will help somebody else survive it so i want to urge you this morning to look at the things in your life and even if they're challenging just know that god is using it he's not wasting anything that happens to you so remember god loves you and trust him trust in his word amen amen i want you now to prepare your hearts and minds for our communion experience god bless you we love you so dearly can we give god great praise can we can get those of us who are in the sanctuary can we clap for the hundreds that are watching right now hallelujah hallelujah i want to thank pastor g she is working diligently on this first book and i'm excited to see what god's going to do with it it's interesting as we've gone virtual for the next six to eight weeks it depends upon how this goes as we've gone virtual only um i woke up this morning asking the lord not to let the glory um i don't use the word minimize but not to let the glory decrease in terms of what we were experiencing in person and as and as i was listening and experiencing the worship of our worship team i sense something i sense god not not releasing us to a lesser season but a greater one so if you answer and the lord didn't go to his house the lord spoke about the time the man got to his house so today from the sanctuary we declare all over the world that the power of the lord jesus christ is meeting you wherever you are in your house in your car does that matter whether you got a family full of house or you're by yourself in the name of the lord jesus he will [Music] we speak healing we speak deliverance we speak breakthrough yes lord he will [Music] answers [Applause] i know he will answer virtually clap right now virtually clap right now we give god praise [Music] glory to god bless his name [Music] come on every head bow father as we enter this space of communion this sacred moment that whereby your son took the passover of the old testament experience and he redefined it for the new testament church it was a lamb that was slain [Music] coming out of egypt but there was a better lamb slain on that friday where we will never need another lamb again forgive us of our sins consecrate and cleanse our minds so we can receive what you have for us today and not just the sermon but the experience of life bless now these elements thank you for them thank you for what they mean to us as people of faith and may we celebrate honor and experience you in jesus name amen jesus took a break loaf of bread and he broke it and he said take heed for this is my body broken for you as often as you do this show your commitment to me till i shall come and then he took a cup and he drunk from me he said drink for this cup represents this the new testament this new covenant no longer written in the blood of lambs but in the blood of the lamb of god and he said drink and eat together as you continue to live out your faith journey remember that the ultimate sacrifice the thing that i really believe is that most people have struggled with their encounters with god because as you try to theologically or biblically or experientially shape your understanding of god with all the death and all of the anxiety and all of the pain it is important that you have encounters with god so i'm going to deal today with just the foundation for understanding encounters with god in the rest of the month i'm going to i'm going to show you biblical encounter encounters biblically of women and men who had these moments with god it's going to change your life so invite people right now invite people right now okay so we're going to turn it over to our worship team to set the atmosphere then i'ma come back with the word of the lord amen hallelujah as we prepare for the word and this series to encounter god and have encounters with god let's lift our hands in our in our sanctuary in our living room wherever you are and declare that god is good we worship him we praise him we [Music] [Applause] jesus [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] praise the lord we thank god for every one of you who are viewing again i want to challenge all of you to real quickly uh go and to uh view today's experience uh this this sermon is not gonna be very long because it's really foundational i'm gonna jump right in let me kind of tell you what was the instigation of it i woke up the other day about five o'clock in the morning 4 35 couldn't really go back to sleep and so i i i'm ministering somewhere in new jersey in the next few weeks so i went to the church's website just to see see the theme and that kind of thing is bishop george and co-pastor mary c wright um and as i was watching the spirit said click on this click on his recent sermon and he was preaching about um he was preaching from romans 12 2. and when i tell you that that message really opened me up i got up started walking around my apartment and the spirit of the lord asked this question i want everybody who's in the space with me today and those who are virtual to hear the question when was the last time you had an encounter that made you want to be better anyone talking about worship you weren't talking about being in church he wasn't talking he said he said something where by the revelation of who i am and the clarification of who you are was so amazing until it overwhelmed you and it called you into something deeper immediately the spirit of the lord began to tell me that i had an assignment to do a message about encounters um so i want to talk this month the month of september on encounters with god that changes lives encounters with god that changes lives father you've given me this word and so i ask you to make it come alive in jesus name amen so for the month we're going to hashtag encounters with god i want you to hashtag encounters with god sp encounters with god sp just hashtag it encounters with god sp just kind of as a meditational met verse i want us to look at deuteronomy chapter 5 verses 2 through 5 and here's what it says deuteronomy 5 2-5 it says that mount sinai the lord our god made a covenant and not with our fathers but with us who are living today this is the verse i want you to catch there on the mountain the lord spoke to you face to face from the fire the lord spoke to you face to face on the fire that's what i want to talk about encounters with god now today is going to be very um very meticulous in terms of information so i want you writing i want you putting stuff in your device because this is going to be foundational so today is going to be very didactic that's what i was looking for everyone that knows me well knows that henry nowin is one of my favorite authors there's an amazing quote from the book his book returned to the pro of the prodigal son here's what it says i am now beginning to see how radically the character of my spiritual journey will change when i no longer think of god as hiding out and making it difficult as possible for me to find him but instead as the one who's looking for me oh god anthony while i'm doing the hiding wow this amazing quote says some very powerful things about god clearly god wants a relationship with you put that in the thread god wants a relationship with me make it personal god clearly wants to engage you god clearly wants to encounter you god is not trying to hide from you god is not trying to make it difficult in fact i think the difficulty is on our end and not god's see here's one of the things i've learned there are seasons god goes after you and then there are seasons you should go after god in either case this is the result of an aggressive caring god who wants to be in relationship with the vulnerable flawed humanity psalm 34 is one of my favorite passages now and here's what it says i prayed to the lord and he answered me he freed me from all my fears here's what's amazing david as many throughout the bible we witness them being shaped shifted and sanctified for purpose we see god reaching out to them and we see them in moments of need exasperation and encouragement reaching out to god in every case we understand something that this merciful caring god engages humanity for something greater put that in the thread something greater god is calling you then into an encounter with himself where he does something to cause you to live a greater life greater is not more money greater is not your boo thing greater is not a bigger house greater is not extravagant vacations no greater is a deeper intimacy with god that allows you to be clear about who you're created to be and i don't know about you but in this season of my life as much as i would like more money as much as i would like a calmer environment what i do want more than anything is i want the presence of god i want god's presence because here's what i discovered two things about these god encounters the first thing is that god encounters write this down god encounters are necessary for purpose and destiny to be fulfilled there's no one that's ever fulfilled god's purpose and not had encounters with god there's no way for you to know how to walk out purpose if you do not have encounters with god but here's the second thing these god encounters keep us centered while we're walking our purpose because it's real easy to get distracted while trying to live life i know there's a lot of people in the pandemic who've gotten distracted and some of the distractions are dressed up as positives what's deep is that these god encounters keep you centered so you don't get distracted while walking out purpose oh the enemy is good at making your life so complicated until you don't know where god is the enemy is good at getting you so frustrated until you don't know how to pray the enemy is good at getting you so intoxicated with your own personal life with your pursuit of pleasure i'm coming to get you the enemy wants you to be so concerned about living a pleasurable life until you don't live a purposeful one the enemy's always trying to cause you not to be centered and so god encounters ensures that you're centered so what is an encounter with god well it's on the screen here it is what's an encounter with god first thing is that simply the word encounter sap means to meet face to face particularly suddenly or unexpectedly an encounter is to meet face to face with god uh particularly suddenly or expectedly so let me take you deeper an encounter with god is an undeniable experience that's the first thing i need everybody to get when you had an encounter with god you know it right when you had a real moment in the presence of god you know it ain't nobody got to tell you ain't nobody got to talk you into it today god wants to set you up to have an encounter with him when you have an encounter with god god brings you into a deeper place of intimacy with him an encounter is an undeniable experience with god that moves the person beyond themselves into a deeper more intimate relationship with god let's try it again it's an undeniable experience with god that moves the person beyond themselves into a deeper intimate relationship with god let's try it again it's an undeniable experience with god it's an undeniable experience with god that's the first thing god wants you to have those kinds of moments that when you come out of it you say man this could only have been god this moment this experience what i walked away with could only be god it's an undeniable experience with god that moves you moves you moves you put that in the thread moves you beyond yourself because here's what's crazy sometimes you're in the way of a deeper relationship with god you ain't got it yet sometimes you're in the way sometimes it's you you're the problem to you having a deeper relationship with god your gender your ambitions your immaturity your unwillingness to conform your unwillingness to shape yourself in the image that god is calling you into your unwillingness to allow that pain to perfect you and not use it as a tool of victimization no you can sometimes be the reason why your prayer life isn't what it's supposed to be you can be the reason why you're not willing to do the things that need to be done so you can conform yourself to the image of god god tells you as he told moses take your shoes off you're on holy ground and you tell god i don't want to get my feet dirty you're the reason why god sometimes can't push you into deeper places because you're so busy trying to control your life and micromanage your life until you mismanage the wonderful moments of humility submission and yieldedness that are required to have encounters are y'all listening to me today here's what's crazy the enemy doesn't want you to have the kind of encounter that changes your life because you might resign from a job of oppression to walk in the liberation of opportunity the enemy doesn't want you to walk in your assignment because you may walk away from some damaging damaging dysfunctional relationships to finally be open to that relationship that is fulfilling which means watch this that there may be a wilderness season where you ain't got no blue thing and you ain't got no best friends and you ain't got no crab eating buddies and you ain't got nobody to hang out with but god's using that season to perfect your consciousness so when he puts people in your space you are no longer controlling them or them controlling you but you're now in a healthy place man you preaching good today here's what's amazing is some of you are afraid of this kind of encounter because you may not know who comes out of it but here's what's crazy whoever comes out of it will be better than who went in an unbelievable an undeniable experience with god that moves a person beyond themselves into a deeper more intimate relationship with god notice i didn't say an undeniable experience with god that moves the person into prosperity i didn't say it moves the person into influencing it in the industry i said a relationship with god and as this relationship with god unfolds what becomes deeper and greater is an availability to god that now walks you in to the things that honor god y'all ready let's go deeper so let me give you the five c's that i've identified that are intended in encounters with god and these five you will see in the next three weeks as i preach out sermons as i walk out texts with you you will see these five right here's the first one this is stuff you need to write as well life change romans 12 and 2 life change romans 12 2 reality is is the reason why god orchestrates jason jonathan these encounters is to change you no seriously that that's why that's why honestly aquarius sometimes i'm suspect when people do all this shouting falling out and speaking in tongues in church and then still cuss you out that that that's why it's it's suspect and here we are when you have all these deep moments enclosed with god but you still gossipy i mean i know ain't nobody here but worship team and those hundreds who are watching but i i think it just got quiet because here's what's crazy we do a whole we before the pandemic we were doing a whole lot of churching and still carnal we were doing a whole lot of concerting and falling out and jumping up and praising worship and hooping and hollering and laying hands and pro and prophesying over each other and we were not impacting the world it was getting worse which means something it means that maybe the pandemic was designed to change you because you were now quarantined with god romans 12 2 is a very powerful passage said don't be conformed to this world but be transformed be ye change inwardly by rethinking who you are as the spirit sanctifies you the first c is life change his second c identity clarification judges chapter 6 verses 11 and following gideon and i think i'm a deal with him gideon wasn't clear who he was so the lord used the encounter to talk this guy to himself wow man here's what's scary some of you are grown and still don't know who god wants you to be you groan and still trying to get a man by shaping yourself into the man's desire based upon what you think is a manipulative image he needs they really don't anthony some of you have spent your whole life trying to be applauded by parents and siblings and family members and they don't know you they can't spiritually tell you who you are and the people who can you don't want to know them because they ain't always glamorous but they're truthful the reality is is that most of us spend our lives in false identity don't really know who we are god uses these encounters to clarify identity thank you god for not letting me live inauthentic you won't know what's scary some of you have gone through some painfully purging seasons so he could detach you from who people wanted you to be so they could be satisfied with you can i take you to the next level y'all here it is be willing to s to to sacrifice relationships that demand conformity and not authenticity some people just don't know you they love you they don't know you and when i talk about knowing i'm talking about knowing you who god has created here's the third thing you ready third c is behavioral correction let me let me really mess y'all up that are watching watch this you can get promotions on your job and your behavior be out of order with god because the enemy also promotes you can be out of order with god in terms of your behavior and still get the job and here's why because systems don't always align with spirit you can be quote unquote successful and your character not be ordained and organized by spirit here's what's crazy david was king had a bathsheba moment david was king okay david was king david was king sure needs david was king god david was king okay you only got it david was king okay let's try it again david was king he was as high as you could go and steele had something in him that created the death of a man in an adulterous moment that confused the kingdom for a season okay y'all missed it david was keen don't measure you by promotion when you got character issues you're not willing to address behavioral correction comes these encounters god put somebody in your life to speak to that behavioral reconstructive need here's the fourth thing the fourth c instilling of courage the thing i love about these encounters with god is that god will talk you into trying stuff you wouldn't have tried he'll talk you into the call that you are running from he'll talk you into stepping into places of great confidence in god he'll talk you in to writing he'll talk you in to singing he'll talk you in the preaching he'll talk you in to starting the business he'll give you courage to love again he'll give you courage to strive again wow these encounters are to instill courage here's the fifth one mission confirmation guns you did your good work today mission confirmation luke chapter 4 and jesus goes into the wilderness and the lord uses the wilderness to prepare him out of the baptism and the baptism was confirmation you are my son i i need somebody who's watching right now to think of the moment when god used an encounter to talk you in and then confirmed it i i listen i um i fly every week now i fly every week now i fly every week and so um whenever i get up on monday i do two things you ready christina first thing i do is i check my phone to see if my flight is still on time i check my phone this phone seeing my fight's on time and then the other thing bishop you ready is what i do is i check to see where the departing gate is okay y'all still here and i go to the departing gate that is listed on my in my phone okay okay don't miss this henrietta my phone has an app the american app it also how and in the app houses my flights within the flight it houses the details of my flight once i click on the app and then scroll through and find my flight it gives me details that now define where i'm supposed to be and and when i get and when i finally get confirmation of where i'm supposed to be i walk to the right gate and the right gate says you are headed to charlotte then when i get off it gives me the next gate and i walk to the next gate and it says you're now headed to richmond and when i get to richmond i get off at a gate and now i know i go to my office okay let me help you god is trying to give you directions for where you're supposed to go next anybody that's a believer that ain't clear about where you're supposed to go you clearly don't have enough encounters with god because when you have encounters with god he will remove the uncertainty by giving you confirmation on where you're supposed to be if you're supposed to play here he's supposed to be he will confirm it and he'll confirm it while you're in crisis can i bless you and tell you god has confirmed me staying at saint paul even when i was in the worst seasons in saint paul here's what's crazy you think god only confirms you're supposed to be somewhere when's a happy place no the best confirmation is when all hell has broken loose and god says stay and you say but god i don't know when you're gonna fix this he said that's your problem you ain't know me repairing it when i may be actually fixing you and so what i need you to do is not panic preach man i need you to calm down and trust the confirmation nobody can tell me no matter how challenging marriage may have been for us that she ain't the one for me he confirmed that pastor g is my present and my future and the eradication of the damage of my past how many times have god tried to confirm something but you wanted to have a conversation about it am i preaching good today yeah y'all here watch this watch this in the thread watch this i'm almost done so let me give you now how does god encounter you how does god encounter you i'm gonna give you four things it's others but these are the four that spirit gave me preparation for this series here's the first one he encounters you through unexpected moments embedded in your daily life he he does it he does it with these unexpected moments embedded in your daily life this is so good daisy watch this you're driving the campus and god talks to you and turns you around while you're driving in the direction he doesn't always change where you're headed he changes where you're headed okay okay i'll say it like this and and i'm sure you all are tired of this example but i never thought to be dean of anybody's school and god in a casual conversation interrupted my life with an encounter that brought me into a revelation i never thought would ever be you know what's really scary is most of us are not great spiritual listeners and and since most of us excuse me for all who are watching because i hope you keep watching but for most of us are fans of some preacher so sometimes people god uses people that ain't our favorite preacher now i hope i'm your favorite preacher but there are times god may even step outside of me no there are times god will step outside of me to speak some things to you but if you're not open to the moments in your life you will miss the unexpected moments that god is working in what appears to be a routine day okay aaron your courage once wrote god stepped into history in an unexpected way to show us that he is the answer to our deepest needs this is what blessed me he still works through carry the title but may not carry the mantle of love for you engagement another human being means that i can just be talking to you and god has an encounter with me through your words here's five will meet you in your failure and it's scary for those who are watching me because when you have fallen short you think you don't qualify for anything when you when you make mistakes you think that you don't qualify when you when you stumbled you don't think you deserve better now you talking about these arrogant people you know these narcissistic people you know and i throw out the name donald trump who think that their mistakes ain't a mistake it's their privilege you know i'm talking about people who actually watch this strategy some of y'all who actually feel bad when you stumble you disqualified yourself because you think your last failure had to have been enough but david shows us something amazing falling short never makes a big god not want to reach down and get you god i thank you for that because i have learned some things about god and mistakes i wouldn't have learned in success if you stay open he'll meet you where you stumble and he'll encounter you i'm done i here's what i need now i need every person watching every person in the sanctuary but every person watching to stop for just a moment and i need everybody to hear the voice of god right now i'm not preaching this message because i need to fill in preaching space i'm telling you honestly this is what the holy ghost said to me this is what the holy ghost said to me pastor g this is what he said to me he says son if people don't encounter me they're going to drown in this next wave how y'all told coach if people don't spend more time with me jonathan they're going to drown if people can don't spin if they don't open themselves up to me so i can talk to them so i can minister to them so i can get them straight so i can keep them focused what's going to happen educators are going to have nervous breakdown and health care workers are going to commit suicide and people and people who are supervisors who can't get enough people to work their jobs and now dairy appointment is tied to what they can get a part-time worker they're gonna feel strict god pastors are gonna quit because if you don't hear god's voice you will not survive because this is not the season for cheap religion cheap church for too many of you your lives are at stake today and you need an encounter oh yeah god god love you father with god so all of you who are watching stop right now with your hands open your mouth those who are in this room lift your hands open your mouth stop going after pleasure pleasure can't speak to you when you're in a season where you're not clear stop going after money money can't fix what a heart when a heart is broken stop going after people if you go after god he'll give you everything else lift those hands open your mouth god clarify confirm make my mistakes work for us oh god i love you today and i don't want to be left in the middle of this season without being clear about you so father i lift my hands i open my mouth and i begin to worship i sense the worship all
