hey everyone welcome to today's lesson my name is wes this is interactive english and if this is your first time here of the channel it's all about just trying to help you practice and improve your english with a lot of different lessons pronunciation grammar vocabulary and today i have well this is a grammar lesson because what we're going to do is we're going to talk about the difference between i think this is some commonly confused grammar we're talking about the difference between some and any some and any i'm going to talk to you a little in detail about each one of these i'm going to give you some example sentences i'm going to ask you some questions so i want you to participate in the lesson and then toward the end i'll talk a little bit about some maybe idioms and expressions that also use some in any before we start the lesson i just want to say hello to some of the people who are with me right now hello lolly uh katrudis good to see you so many good to see some members patrons with us uh sleepwalker rosalinda pussycat lover leo how are you olga angela uh takayao hi uh i will give some more shout outs as we go through the lesson um because i do i have some questions that i would like all of you to answer so let's begin uh we're gonna go we're talking about sum and any and we're gonna start from the absolute uh beginning and what i mean by that is some and any they are both determiners so the first thing you should know is well what is a determiner in grammar this is a word that is used before a noun to show which particular example of the noun you're referring to so down here i have a list of different types of determiners like articles a and the a chair the bottle of water uh you also have demonstratives which are which is this that those these all right those chairs these uh bottles of water numerals is just really referring to like numbers one two three four one chair five bottles of water that i guess those are the examples that i'm going to use ordinals ordinals again ordinal numbers we're talking about first second third fourth so i could say um this is the first bottle of water that i've had today uh or i sat in the last chair uh possessive my his her uh ours my bottle their chair or quantifiers and this is what uh what i wanted to get to so sam and any are determiners but specifically the type of determiner they are they are quantifiers and quantifiers it's a word or phrase that's used before a noun to show the amount of it that is being considered an amount is the key word that i really want to would want to focus on when i want to when i well i keep saying when i talk about the differences between some and any so these are some examples of quantifiers many a lot of few less and then of course we have some and any down there so let's look at some first a i told you it's a determiner it's a quantifier we're talking about an amount the other thing i've put up there with an asterisk is that it's used with plural and non-count nouns please keep that in mind all right remember that with plural and non-count nouns so some and these these definitions i get from cambridge that's like my my go-to online dictionary when i'm looking to explain like the meaning of something i think they do a great job using simple words so sum is an amount or number of something that is not stated or known it's like a part of something some will have it has different meanings which i will come back to at the end but i'm focusing right now on an amount so it's talking about an amount or number so for example i gave those are some example sentences i bought some new clothes it's like you about you bought an amount of new clothes clothes is a plural noun i bought some new clothes or that question would you like some coffee coffee is a non-count noun and i could ask that and i would use some before coffee would you like some coffee any it's also a determiner it's a quantifier and again keep that in mind it's used with plural and non-count nouns any just means sum i told you they're commonly confused in grammar uh or even the smallest amount or number of so again we're talking about an amount here are some questions and then i'm gonna really look at the difference between the two so is there any ice cream left you're talking about even the smallest amount of ice cream is there any ice cream left sounds like something that i would ask uh and then the next one i don't have any cash on me can you pick up the check so you're saying that again an amount of cash you don't have any on you or we weren't expecting any visitors in this case we're talking about an amount of people an amount uh we're talking about any visitors we weren't expecting any visitors even the smallest amount of visitors all right so let's look at this and hopefully looking at this you can see the differences a little bit more i'm going to spend a little time on this page right here and for you members and patrons i will post this lesson later on this is a great little uh i think resource guide when talking about the difference between some and any so before forget about those exceptions to the rules down there i'll come back to those at the end i want to first look at the well no it's over this side right here all right sum i have that plus right there i'm talking about is generally used in positive statements all right or you could say affirmative statements and i have that example sentence i have some extra pizza all right that is a positive statements affirmative i have some extra pizza any is generally used in negative statements typically you're saying not in that case um so for example they might say oh i have some extra pizza and i don't want any pizza all right that is a negative statement the question mark is because any is generally used in questions all right do you so if somebody says oh i have some extra pizza um would you would you like some pizza like no no i don't want any pizza do you have any pasta i'm asking a question and i'm going to use any do you have any pizza notice i said generally there because of course there are exceptions which i'm going to talk about right now so going back to some the exception to the rule we're talking about questions you would use some with questions when offering something and you think that the answer is going to be either just yes or no would you like some coffee if i asked that then i would say well the answer is just going to be a yes or no and then it's finished so would you like some coffee coffee is a non-count noun and i think it's very common to use some with that construction would you like some of something the other thing i would say which i wanted to mention earlier when some and any when talking about an amount i think quite often you're talking about food not always because i gave some other examples that were not food related but quite often i think we're talking uh about food the exception to the rule for any is with those positive statements all right any can be used in positive sentences if it's used with the the conjunctions if or whether look at that that example that i gave you please let me know if you have any questions that is a positive statement it's an affirmative sentence please let me know if you have any questions questions that is my that is my count noun so any questions it because of if so i'm trying to think of an example with weather um uh i could say um i want to know whether you want any pizza i have some extra pizza so i want to know whether you want any pizza all right i i'm using weather in that case so again whether you want any pizza and then that's when you could tell me no i don't want any pizza that negative statement so this is a good well over here the those are general rules to follow some with positive sentences positive statements um the exception would be questions if you're offering something yes or no answer and any with those negative statements and questions and the exception would be the positive statements if you're going to use if or whether i know it's a lot to take in but i think as we practice this a little the more you practice the more comfortable you're going to feel i think using these and then when it comes time to use them in general conversation or your writing you'll just use them correctly because that's what i want to do right now i want to practice using some or any i'm going to give you some sentences and i just want you to think about well how would you fill in the blank how would you complete the sentences using some or any and i want you to write them write your answers in the chat that way i can throw out some more shout outs even if you're watching this later if you would like use that comment sense section like it's a piece of paper and you can write your answers down there here are this is a this is a conversation so we have like person a and person b the first person is asking a question did you catch um fish today you can fill in either some or any and then the other person responds yeah i caught but my friend didn't catch um all right i have three three blank spaces three blank spots right there and i want you to complete that conversation using either some or any if you're not sure if you're trying to think of the rules that we just talked about and you're like oh i forget exactly then this is another example i'd say just just do what feels natural um when thinking about this do what feels right so we're practicing using some or any let's see what we got here uh all right we have all right excellent uh farm on lolly uh honey jam awesome perfect uh i don't want to call excellent uh so here's the conversation uh rosa let's see all right lucy yes it should go any some any that's th those are the three blanks did you catch any fish today we're talking about a question again fish in this case would really refer to a uh like a non-count uh noun or or no a plural excuse me the plural of one fish is several fish did you catch any fish today and yeah i caught some that is a positive um that is my positive sentence but my friend didn't catch any that's my negative sentence so here is an example of i told you any we use with questions and those negative statements which the question you have did you catch any fish some is used with the positive yeah i caught some but my friend didn't catch any all right i hope this was that that probably was not too difficult uh so let's look at the next one this i this is going to be a longer dialogue but we'll kind of go through it just one at a time i told you before that i think often when you use summon any you're talking about food an amount and this is also where they could be maybe a little confused um so we have the waiter and the customer the waiter says would you like um vegetables to go with that should say your not you all right sorry about that i look at this several times beforehand and then there's always that one little typo that that that trips me up so the waiter says would you like mmm vegetables to go with your meal should say your and the customer would say do you have other options what do you think how would you complete that with some or any you guys are just rapid fire right away excellent uh lolly zsb uh angela anna what sleepwalker pascat lover uh who else kareem gettrudis oleg nice so we're talking about some and then any that you guys i think you'd perfect excellent and let's talk about why would you like some vegetables to go with your meal i told you any is used with questions but this is one of the exceptions because when you ask somebody that like would you like typically the answer is just going to be a yes or a no so in that case if you think the answer is just a yes or no you're going to use some would you like some vegetables to go with your meal the next question do you have any other options i i didn't know if you thought this might be tricky because i i thought maybe somebody would think well that could be a yes or no question do you have any other options the reason why you're going to use any is because even though you could answer yes or no the expectation is that you you need to give more information for example if the customer is asking do you have any other options and the waiter just says yes and they don't say anything else that's going to sound a little weird so in this case it's not like you can only answer yes or no you would need to give more information which is why in this case we're using any so this is not just a yes or no question would you like some vet would you like some vegetables to go with your meal uh do you have any other options and then they continue the conversation right here how about um rice or potatoes and the customer says i ate rice for lunch i guess i'll just have mmm caesar salad now the one little hint that i'll give you is i'm i'm trying to trick you here a little bit so we'll see uh if if some of you catch on this is tricky i'm trying to trick you and think about think about the what i told you at the beginning what i told you to keep in mind so we have the first part of the conversation would you like some vegetables to go with your meal the customer says do you have any other options and the waiter responds with how about rice or potatoes i ate rice for lunch i guess i'll have caesar salad and i told you i'm trying to trick you so that's uh your hint all right i think uh you guys are kind of getting this uh so far i haven't seen any correct answers because i'm trying to trick you all right and the the one that i'm trying to trick you on is that last one and the one thing i'd say before i'll show you the answer because i haven't seen any correct answers remember some and any they're determiners and i put that little asterisk up there used with plural plural nouns and non-count nouns okay so that's your that's your hint right there we're talking about for the first part actually the the last one should not be summer any all right some some and then uh caesar salad and let's talk about why i'm sorry if that was confusing so the waiter would ask how about some rice or potatoes again it's a question but in this case the answer could either just be yes or no so this also this can be thought of as okay that is the exception you're asking a question you're offering something and the answer could just be yes or no how about some rice or potatoes and the person could say well just yes or no and in this case the customer responds well i ate some rice for lunch it's a it's a positive statement rice is a non-count noun i guess i'll have caesar's salad so a caesar salad this is uh it's not a plural noun a salad it's a singular noun and in this case you're just going to use an article that is the determiner you would use i'll just have a caesar salad all right it's just a salad okay uh sorry if that was uh confusing maybe everybody was just zeroed in on that sum in any uh but i i think as you read this it's a pretty simple conversation dialogue i think uh i hope it makes sense yes it was a trap all right i told you that i would wanted to kind of wrap it up talking about some other meanings for some and any especially how they might be informally used as idioms so this is confusing grammar because they're both determiners they're quantifiers when you're talking about an amount some versus any but they can also have like some can have another meaning in this case it can refer to something that is well impressive that's some and then you would follow it with a noun that's some pig all right can anybody does anybody uh can anybody tell me where that's uh from that's some pig or somebody could say well that's some boat you got there and in that case they're using some to say that it's impressive that's some boat that's some pig and if you don't know that some pig that's coming that's a reference to the book charlotte's web i don't know if anybody's read that but that was like one of the that was the first that was the first message she wrote up in the web to describe wilbur some pig an impressive pig uh yeah so they no longer capitalize the sea and caesar salad i i don't know that's a good question maybe i should have capitalized that uh i'm not sure i'll have to check on that um so some could mean very impressive like this it's also this is another this is an idiom and then some and i told you it's an idiom because idioms don't think of the meaning of the individual word just think of this as one phrase and then you have the meaning and it means and even more and then some it's used informally uh hopefully those example sentences might help if i'm just speaking casually oh they paid us a thousand dollars and then some and it's saying that you got even more perhaps you got more money perhaps they gave you some food we don't know but it's just an expression that you could use uh they paid us a thousand dollars and then some and even more or i had to do all their chores and then some so again we don't know what what more this person had to do but if you want to kind of really emphasize give emphasis to something and really and even more people might throw that and then some and then some so this is a it's a good informal idiom if we're talking about any um this is another a phrase that you may hear i should say it's another idiom by any means necessary if somebody says by any means necessary it just means they're going to do whatever is needed and typically i would say that you're talking about it could be even something like referring to using some violence or cheating or maybe doing something unethical is i think how people may interpret this ah we're gonna by any means necessary we're going to win this election by any means necessary and in that case like i said they might be talking about doing something that could be wrong or cheating or immoral so think about consider that when you're using this typically people are saying that they're going to do whatever is needed even if it involves something that they probably shouldn't be doing by any means necessary another one um with any and this is another meaning for any let me explain this anyone that you like so for example if i you i don't know i maybe if i have a bunch of cars that you can choose from and i say choose anyone that you like or you can have anyone that you like in this case any is talking about it's one of a particular type of a thing when something's not important so basically oh you can have anyone that you like i'm saying you can have any type of this and it really doesn't matter it's not important which one anyone that you like and that's again that's a phrase that you might hear uh people say this is whoops i always get the the camera mixed up over here this um i just want i i i oh that's another typo i found it okay it should say instead of can it should say can't i can't just wear any old thing to the party any old thing this is more of an expression i think it's a little maybe a little bit of an older expression again can should be can't i can't just wear any old thing any old thing in this phrase really means anything but somebody instead of saying anything somebody might say any old thing they're referring to clothes so we're talking about wearing any old thing i think people that's typically how you would use this expression wear any old thing again we're talking about one particular item of clothing that's not important any old piece of clothing that doesn't matter in this in this context you're saying you can't just wear any old thing you're basically saying the clothes that you're going to wear is very important so you need to be careful you can't just wear any old thing and again i made a typo there that or over there it should not say can that should say can't um yes zsb you're right too many typos today uh i need to i need to need to hone in on these a bit more but yeah every time i look through these several several times and i'm like i got it down no typos and then yes i i get here live with you guys and they all just start popping up out of nowhere so these are just some other examples as to how you may use some or any i think the best um source that i have for you guys is this one right here and i told uh members patrons when i post these lessons then you'll have this available but this is really your guide to when to use some in any when we're talking about quantifiers because then in that case we're to get a haircut anyway i hope this is useful and even if you knew some of this information it's always good to review it's always good to practice because sometimes this is where people may make a slight mistake when they're using some or any especially if we're talking about those exceptions that we were looking at on that chart of when to use them thank you guys so much uh for being here
