hey how's going Galan's it's Nate here and throughout the years on this channel we've done videos on nearly every place explorable in Skyrim from the bustling streets of Whiterun to the ashy shores of Seoul Stein there's few corners of the elderscrolls v of we've yet to Calvera however one place we've thus far inappropriately neglected is the soul cairn not a part of our mortal realm the soul Charon is one of the many dimensions of oblivion we must venture to it's where the souls of those unfortunate enough to have become soul trapped or condemned to spend all of eternity as you might imagine it's a very gloomy place the region is unique even amongst the elder scrolls as planes of oblivion as rather than have been created and ruled by a Daedric God as most oblivion pockets ara its founders and current rulers war slash are human beings legend has it thousands maybe hundreds of thousands of years ago a group of incredibly talented necromancer's who had already been experimenting with soul trapping magic were able to somehow bend various chaotic energies to their will and manifest their own very oblivion dimension soon they ascended to it abandoned their mortal limitations and continued their ever lucrative soul trade today they call themselves the ideal masters and these godly necromancer's take on the form of giant soul gems routinely making devious deals with humans and elves whom they usually trick suffice to say the soul Karen and her creators are some of the most incredible fascinating and spooky concepts we get to explore an elder scrolls Laura and by examining the right books out of game sources and putting some clues together we can discover that there's even more going on here than what we're directly told so today we'll be taking a look and 5 things you probably didn't know about the soul care enough of the elderscrolls v skyrim starting off let's talk a bit about gameplay meta itself one of the many interesting quirks about the soul Caren is that when we enter during the events of the dog or DLC we can't bring any of our followers save cerana the reason for this is that evidently the soul cairn is protected by some magical energies that prevent mortals with intact Souls from ever entering in fact the only way we ourselves are able to enter is if we a transition into a vampire and of course lose our mortal Souls or be put part of our souls in a soul gem and leave that gem in Tamriel Sauron is able to come with us because she is obviously a Vulcan our vampire and doesn't have a soul herself this is all made very clear to the player before we enter however something the game doesn't tell you is that while it's true we can't take most of our followers to the soul Charon we can't technically bring someone who isn't cerana you see if before entering the player raises a fallen corpse and turns them into a thrall or Zambia using the proper conjuration spell wa you can then take that thrall with you into the soul Charon - this is because thralls don't have active souls now admittedly this isn't the most practical thing to do because most conjuration thrall spells are limited by time meaning you can only keep one alive for say a minute maybe two or three before they disintegrate into ash nonetheless it's really neat that bethesda paid so much attention to this no mortals with souls in the soul care and rule that they thought about thralls and we're sure to let them in - you would have thought the festa would have just banned any character that wasn't you or cerana but no they made this exception its little details like this that really made me fall in love with Skyrim and also keep this YouTube channel alive anyway moving on next on our list it's time to look at things in more of a grand scheme while Skyrim's dog or DLC certainly offered us our most recent chance to explore the soul Charon it wasn't our first indeed the Daggerfall spin-off and elder scrolls legend battle Spira which released in 1997 for PC players gay players our first and only other look at this soul care and dimension a little context for why we were there battle spires plotline revolved around a potential Daedric invasion of the mortal world as mehrunes dagon evil god of destruction plan to invade and conquer Tamriel WA but before he could do that he would have needed to have his armies take over a number of smaller dimensions in realms between him and earth or learn in battlespire your job was to stop Dagon as he was invading those other worlds before he got to your own spoiler alert' you altima exceeded the reason the game was called battlespire was that one of the first places attacked by the prince was this sort of space station / dimension called the battlespire it's a really neat concept that enough time to explain anyway one of the other dimensions he invades is the soul Karen and you spend a good chunk of the game like seriously around 15 to 25% of it Hira trying to get him out interestingly this version of the soul Karen doesn't look quite like the big purple desert we see in Skyrim instead a more or less resembles a giant mansion populated by various bone men rates and other undead foes likely much to your amusement these soul care creatures were actually fighting against de gods invasion - trying to push him back just like the player in battles fire though they would still attack the player character on site as we ventured through our way through this early Halla which was mostly just one giant dungeon crawl we would eventually get a chance to meet and interact with the ideal masters themselves yeah the very rulers of this place while incredibly arrogant the ideal masters would agree to a sort of alliance with the hero as they weren't too keen on being invaded by a Daedric god themselves and they would allow us access to a variety of multi-dimensional portals that would help us in our fight we'll circle back to battles fire later on in this video but something I'll leave you with is this hilarious Easter Egg by Bethesda if you decide to communicate with any of the various non hostile souls in the Karin and Skyrim they often will say various radiate lines of dialogue usually just whining about their horrible situation you know being trapped for eternity and everything but one of the lines of dialogue they might say to the player is this referencing that oh so early Elder Scrolls game how dare they cast me from the battlespire hello make them pay dearly coming in at number three one of the most notable inhabitants of the Charon we meet in Skyrim is the ancient undead dragon Derna Veera whom we will have to do battle with he's apparently been trapped here for tens of thousands of years and will probably be remaining here for the rest of the years to come according to him Derner fear was once a totally normal dragon who lived in the skies above Tamriel likely sometime in the maratha era back when dofus were still flying all over the place unlike most of his fellow dragons who fought with flames and ice magic he preferred to embrace necromancy using various spells to resurrect other dragons to do his fighting for him dirt appears dabbles into the dark arts eventually led him to the ideal masters whom he wanted to work out a deal with the undead dragon one of the ideal masters to provide him with an entire army of undead ovas to do his bidding the Masters agreed under one simple condition they would give dirt avira's army but first they wanted dirt avier to go to the soul Charon and watch a specific person who's been trapped here until that person passes away the dragon thought about it for a while and figured okay no way this individuals gonna live more than 40 50 maybe 60 years this is a totally reasonable set of demands in exchange for an army so he accepted unfortunately for dharna veer the ideal masters played a sinister trick on him that person he was supposed to watch over is villarica an undead vampire who will never ever die thus the dov'è is going to be here for a very very long time I digress well I find his backstory very fascinating it's not why I brought him up in this video because you see he's got a lot of dialogue with the player and when he speaks to you he addresses you as a fellow acha a fellow dragon referencing your Dragonborn soul this is pretty significant because you can meet Derna Veera before you yourself actually are aware that you're a dovakin before you complete that mission in the main questline where your dragon born nature is revealed to you and believe it or not you can call journal you're out on this asking why is referring to you as a fellow dragon when as far as you know you're immortal and depending on where you're at in the game's main questline Derna veers response will vary from like four or five different conversation trees just take a listen to what he might say depending on where you're at forgive me my instinct was to grant you this title I am uncertain why perhaps one day it will become clear to both of us you are the dovahkiin the Dragonborn you may not be one of us in body but you have earned the right to bear this title in my language the corner in' is the Vanquisher the one who has bested a fellow dov'è in battle even in the soul Charon the defeat of the world Eater has reached my ears Dovahkiin you may not be dov'è but the defeat of all doing earns you the right of taiko 4/4 spot like just about any bethesda location the soul Karen is absolutely filled with incredible bits and pieces of environmental storytelling now there's seriously a lot of things we can find here bones belonging to mysterious creatures dragon priest skeletons the remains of past adventurers we don't exactly have the time to go over all of them however there is one setting in particular my personal favorite that I would like to examine just south west or south west ish directions are a little funny in the soul Charon of the giant castle we can find an interesting sight a soul well bubbles and erupts with purple flames and around it are three ghosts almost treating the well like a campfire of sort trying to stay warm and if you take a closer look at these ghosts you'll notice a pattern each one of them is an orc an orc wearing some sort of battle attire or armor nowhere else in the entire soul Charon are there or summer ghosts it's only here and it gets even more fascinating because just a very short couple of steps north of this site we can find a dragon skeleton and all around it orcish arrows as well as an orcish battle axe dug into its skull quick sidenote the arrows all around the skeleton are actually supposed to be buried inside of it - like the axe however my games collision messed up in a little bit of a glitch I know believe it or not nonetheless the suggestion here is clear all of these orcs died battling a dragon now there's still a lot of questions about the scene whose answers aren't immediately apparent for one in order to enter the soul Charon one needs to be soul trapped at least usually yet these works clearly died fighting a dragon and dragons with the obvious exception of Derna Vieira aren't big practicers of necromancy or conjuration spells so maybe it was a third party or maybe this dragon they were battling was one of Derna beer soldiers or something furthermore I'm very curious as to when this battle between the orcs and dragons took place there's no documented or summer dragon war in any book we read or anything like that so it seems more than likely they were fending off an individual dragon attack at some point in time almost certainly some time between the maratha and first eras as that's when dragons were known to inhabit Tamriel WA in abundance also why did the orcs weapons and the skeleton of the dragon come to the soul Karen - isn't it just spirits that get teleported my point is there's a lot about this scene we don't know the answers to questions that like leave only the orcs know and the Yorke's won't alwa and finally last on our list we of course know very well how the overwhelming majority of souls we see in the Sola Karen God irra they were mostly unwilling individuals who are unlucky enough to have been soul trapped and are now doomed to spend forever in this place but what about the other creatures we encounter in the soul Charon that aren't those passive Souls what about the bone men the keepers the mist men will attack the player on sight and don't offer any dialogue what's their story well I'd like to use the spot to examine two potential theories one suggestion is that they're totally inhuman almost soulless creatures created by the ideal masters themselves we know that many of the Daedric gods who preside over their own plains of oblivion are capable of creating their own types of creatures to act as servants we call these creatures lesser Daedra for instance hermaeus mora Daedric god of knowledge created the seekers and lurkers mehrunes dagon god of chaos gave birth to the drum aura and the scamp's maybe the ideal masters just created the bone men the misc men and the keepers all by themselves while this explanation it does make some pretty good sense other players suggest that the reality is far darker that all of these guardians of the soul Charon are actually unwilling you see back in the elder scrolls Babel spire as we players fought our way through the soul Charon we'd encounter a variety of creatures defending it whom we'd have to battle against one of dagger falls unique mechanics is that allowed us to enter a conversation with almost any character we were fighting against now for the most part these conversations weren't very deep or revealing the soul carrion creatures would usually just say something along the lines of die mortal or I'm coming for your soul nothing all that important but when we talk to some of the mobs as they were attacking us mind you they would actually start apologizing they would say how sorry they were they had to do this that they had an unquenchable thirst for human blood and souls and that they were once normal humans themselves all of these more talkative soul Charon characters had one thing in common they died and were soul trapped recently as in with only a couple of months a few characters were even soul trapped during mehrunes dagon invasion of the battlespire which began like literally at the start of the game so not even a couple of days ago some suspect that when people are soul trapped they're not always just kept in the soul Charon as some weird spectral soul instead the ideal master select a few of them to become guardians of the place to become the bone man mist men and keepers and the longer a soul has that job the more and more their mental faculties begin to deteriorate and the less they're able to speak this would explain why we're able to talk with all of these people who recently died and while the other souls are less well intellectual maybe the reason the ideal masters keep all of these spectral souls around is just in case they need more people to become bone men and whatnot maybe they're just keeping them in storage it's a very very dark possibility but thankfully that's just a theory a game fee that's copyrighted and with that we're going to wrap up five things you probably never know about the sole care of the elderscrolls v Skyrim thanks so much for stopping by everybody which of these tiny details are fun facts did you find to be the most interesting and what Skyrim fallout or any other game Easter eggs do you know of that we've yet to tackle we have a comment down below as always like ratings are very much appreciated again thanks for watching and hope to catch you all
