Hey how's it going guys it's Nate here and the Daedric gods of the Skyrim and really the entire Elder Scrolls universe are some of the most frightening entities you can imagine typically evil sadistic Dean's that take pleasure and meddling in the affairs of the mortal realm and exercise a supreme power in total there are nearly twenty Daedric princes said to be watching over noon from mehrunes dagon god of chaos and destruction to vaermina lord of nightmares there is quite a long list of these deities you need to watch out for and perhaps the creepiest one or at least the creepiest we meet in Skyrim is hermaeus mora god of knowledge memory and fate moral rules over the realm of Apocrypha a grotesque plane of oblivion that functions as a giant twisted library where rooms are separated by a massive sea of ink and tentacles unlike most other Daedra hermaeus mora never even bothers to take a human form instead he chooses to physically represent himself as a horrifying mass of tentacles that invoke unease and even the hardiest of warriors and you better believe that a character this fascinating is absolutely hiding some intriguing secrets and is the subject of some fascinating events and practices some of which Skyrim doesn't want to tell you so today we'll be taking a look at five things you probably didn't know about hermaeus mora in the Elder Scrolls v skyrim starting off it's no secret that hermaeus mora at least aesthetically speaking takes some heavy inspiration from the writings of howard phillips or HP Lovecraft an early 20th century fiction writer he basically invented a new genre of horror centered around gross godly multi-armed demons a big massive tentacle monster himself or itself remains mora highly resembles HP's characters such as yog Sothoth and other Lovecraftian deeds however Moroz connections to Lovecraft don't stop there and you may be surprised to see just how far both Asda went in order to pay homage to HP's work you see what if hermaeus mora's artifacts is an ancient book known as the Augmon finial a tome containing such an egregious amount of legendary and forbidden knowledge that it said to grant those who are able to read it without going mad near godlike abilities according to Skyrim's Laura the infinium was written for hermaeus mora by his divine scribe zahrk's 'yes and since then the gods been using it to confuse and manipulate mortals for thousands heck maybe hundreds of thousands of years just prior to the events of skyrim the book was strangely sealed away in a nearly unbreakable dwarven lockbox nobody's sure who put it there or why but it seems likely whoever they were they were trying to keep it out of mortal hands this greatly annoyed hermaeus mora and he will actually give the player a quest to break open the box and once again let his book back into circulation anyway enough about the lore if you look at the model and texture used by the augment finian you'll realize that it's actually bound with skin this is seemingly a clear reference by Bethesda to the Necronomicon or The Book of the Dead The Book of the Dead was an also a skin bound book that in Lovecraft's universe was written by an 8th century Arab poet who worshiped many of the strange Lovecraftian gods such as Cthulhu and youngja Thoth this book doesn't just appear in a single one of Lovecraft's writings but it's in a multiple of them and despite referencing The Book of the Dead in many of his works Lovecraft never really explained what it was totally about its contents were never really mentioned almost as if it's forbidden knowledge anyway it would seem that the Daedric god of fate borrowed a bit more from this authors work than just his charming good looks next on our list most of the Daedric princes we meet in the Elder Scrolls franchise are known to be capable of creating their own creatures which we in turn refer to as lesser Daedra lesser Daedra typically borrow many characteristics from their patron deity and valiantly serve them for instance mehrunes dagon Lord of Chaos created the drum aura a type of monster that physically resemble humans but boast much redder skin often have horns and are far more aggressive and powerful they're also a bit less intelligent the drum aura inhabit Maroons his plane of oblivion and are known to live in tribes when they do somehow find their way into the mortal realms they typically cause as much chaos and destruction as possible even more fantastical are the oghren giant fat ogre like specimens created as servants to malacath Daedric prince of the spurned and ostracized well as anyone who's played the Dragonborn DLC knows a very well by now hermaeus mora also has his own various kinds of lesser Daedra in service to him and what i want to focus on are the seekers because the lore suggests that these beings have some horrifying backstories seekers are roughly human size floating beans that much like the God whom they follow give off some real Lovecraftian Cthulhu vibes tentacles flail across their head face and where their legs should be though they also have normal hands they resemble a cross between man and octopus additionally seekers boast incredible magical capabilities and can be found guarding Moroz lands of Apocrypha and a few can even be encountered on the island of Sol Steinman as the events of Dragonborn caused pieces of Apocrypha to spill over into the mortal realm anyway many players believe that seekers are particularly unique even amongst lesser Daedra as rather than being totally created by hermaeus mora it's thought that seekers are really just people who were captured by the god and mutated severely it's an idea that inspires shivers down one spine and I personally think it's likely most of the evidence behind this theory from what we know about a mysterious now lost character named Mauryan xenos whose fate is ultimately unknown now we never meet this Mauryan guy in any of the games or anything like that but rather his tale is told in the book the doors of oblivion which was written by his assistant post Thomas Lee and can now be found across Skyrim the doors of oblivion is largely about the events leading up to mr. xenos disappearance documented by his apprentice apparently in life Maureen was an incredibly gifted researcher at the mages guild in Serie della who developed an obsession with studying the various realms of oblivion so skilled was he Maureen was able to develop spells that allowed him to travel to and personally witness many oblivion dimensions all the while telepathically communicating what he saw with his apprentice the assistant states that Maureen had traveled everywhere from Malak balls terrifying dimension of Coldharbour to sheogorath mystical Shivering Isles but then one day Mauryan decided that he wanted to go see Apocrypha and that's when things went horribly wrong at first what's more Ian got Farah his assistant claims everything seemed fine his telepathic messages were normal and Maureen told his assistant of a vast library with endless knowledge but the longer he stayed the weirder his messages got normally Maureen would only spend less than a day when he traveled to a Daedric dimension but he insisted on saying days and then weeks and then months and then years his messages back slowly became more like curious riddles and before long he was sending nothing but ineligible jargon Zenoss would to the assistants knowledge never leave Apocrypha and never come back the author claims his master was lost to hermaeus mora's realm and the last message he heard was a totally indecipherable series of noises and by then he'd been in Apocrypha for seven years this is how the doors of oblivion ends and many players believe that what was really happening was that Maureen was transforming into a seeker it would explain how the beings came into existence and why they still retained some human characteristics like arms and thumbs and it would also explain their name seekers as in seeking no you get the idea anyway whatever the story behind these weird hovering Octus people is only they and her mom may know and neither is talking coming in at number 3 yeah I'm actually kind of slightly cheating here as this fact isn't necessarily related to just Skyrim but more or less pertains to the entire Elder Scrolls franchise and specifically yes so nonetheless despite its off-topic Ness it is still a fact about hermaeus mora that i found so interesting i had to include anyway ESO is set thousands upon thousands of years before any of the other Elder Scrolls games in the mid second era despite this fact when playing ESO players could actually find books that were written after the mid second era all throughout the world of the Elder Scrolls online we can find books penned in the third and even fourth eras why that doesn't make a lot of sense these are literally titles from the future an easy example is that book the doors of oblivion this was a title written in the third era that we can find in Skyrim and that makes sense Skyrim takes place after the third era but we can also find it in ESO how is this possible well as you can likely already infer by the nature of this video the answer seems to be the work of hermaeus mora when traveling to the gand randon ruins in eso a loading screen pretty much blatantly reveals this fact hermaeus mora is the reason why we have access to so many futuristic texts it's implied that they were brought over through the use of magical halls created by one of his worshippers honestly I really loved this explanation by ZeniMax online studios I think at the end of the day no matter what they wanted to populate their game with as many texts from the Elder Scrolls franchise as possible including ones from the future which obviously wouldn't make a lot of sense but by using hermaeus mora as a scapegoat they were able to provide a very lore friendly explanation that doesn't compromise much of what we know heck this even seems like something hermaeus mora would do so not only did SOS gameplay get to benefit from all of these texts but the lore remained relatively unscathed good on them for fourth spot were finally headed back to good old-fashioned single-player Skyrim to talk a bit about hermaeus mora's Daedric quest discerning the trans mundane and specifically a detail by Bethesda towards the end of it that I really appreciated now remember that skin bound book the augment finian that we talked so much about at the beginning of this video it's trapped in a dwarven lockbox and hermaeus mora wants us to get it out of that lockbox but this is actually the quest where all of that happens so you're already pretty familiar with the lore behind it but what I'm really interested in is the end of this mission because once you've completed the quest hermaeus mora will in fact appear before you and his massive technically form and congratulate the player thanking you for doing his deed and also making a couple of additional requests after he's done with his dialogue with you he'll disappear into the mist and the quest will be completed well this mission discerning the trans mundane is part of vanilla Skyrim and as we all know the Dragonborn DLC which released around a year after Skyrim came out heavily featured hermaeus mora once again this time making him almost a primary antagonist rather than being featured in just one minor quest he was the subject of like nearly all of them and we interact with him quite a bit in that game so have you ever thought about what would happen if you completed the Dragonborn DLC entirely did all that interacting with hermaeus mora and became his new champion and then decided to jump into that quest discerning the trans mundane I mean you'd think it might feel a bit awkward right you are hermaeus mora's knew a favourite person in the world and in this quest he normally just addresses you as a random stranger doesn't make a lot of sense when they were developing Dragonborn it seems as though Bethesda thought about this and believe it or not the Dragonborn DLC actually alters the vanilla discerning the trans mundane quest specifically changing a lot of hermaeus mora's dialogue take a listen to how he normally addresses the dovakin and how that dialogue changes after you've completed Dragonborn it's pretty neat [Music] [Music] and finally last on our list the Daedric gods may have a lot of power over Tamriel but you know who has even more players with access to council commands sure mehrunes dagon can summon a few of his monster people to attack nirn but with a couple of keystrokes you can literally disable all life it's incredible one of the more notable things players can do with console commands is spawn in virtually any NPC in the game all you need to do is find their NPC character ID in the game's files and type in player dot place at me and they'll pop up or right before your eyes but something pretty odd happens if you do this to her Maiasaura if you look up his character ID and spawn him in well you might be expecting a big massive tentacles to pop out of nowhere instead hermaeus mora will spawn in as in orc we're willing at nothing but his undergarments why this doesn't make any sense what happened to the technically God we all know and love where is he what's this thing doing here alas the answer is in Skyrim's engine you see the hermaeus mora we see in the game the big multiple eyes floating around tentacles guy isn't actually an npc at least not as far as sky runs files are concerned instead the creation engine considers that an object I'm still not entirely sure why Bethesda decided to make morris physical form an object rather than a character personally I think it has to do with the fact that he can't receive any damage at all and oftentimes ignores collision mechanics but I digress due to the nature of the creation engine objects are incapable of engaging with dialogue only actual NPCs characters have that privilege so this obviously creates a bit of a problem because Bethesda what's you to talk to her miss Maura so their solution was to create a here maius Maura character ie this orc and hide him deep deep away in the game's files and then attribute all of hermaeus mora's dialogue lines to this orcish character so when you're speaking to her Maiasaura in any of the game's missions you're actually really talking to this orc who is in game miles upon miles away from you it's kind of weird and a little difficult to explain but there's a technical reason behind this this is why that if this orcs somehow gets killed hermaeus mora will have no dialogue lines with the player because this was the channel in which he was able to talk to you from its data cool anyway while this Daedric beam is capable of literally destroying the realms of men it still can't speak for itself some food for thought and with that we are going to wrap up five things you probably didn't know about hermaeus mora in the Elder Scrolls v skyrim thanks so much for stopping by everybody real quick if you would like to continue the conversation further in the pin comment down below there will be a link to our channels discord server where everything keep shouting about Skyrim and well anything really again guys thanks so much for watching and hope to catch you all in my next video peace out everyone you
