me and damian are gonna climb today it looks like this is damien sounds like a really good plant uh-huh so here's the thing we got two trees a little one and a big one but i feel like i cannot cheese out and take the little one and then appoint you so we have to leave it up to chance chance yeah mean by that so we'll call this one five and we'll call the other one three and then we'll ask them to pick a number to uh to pick a number and whatever number it's closest to the guy who asked them to pick a number will have that tree that's pretty simple the guy though we should real people would just be working by now yeah real people uh-huh hey jeff i knew something's filling up i knew you guys were talking pick a number between uh one and ten four what oh dang okay did you record all that yeah that doesn't work at all that doesn't work at all oh i think i win no we both win uh pick another number seven dang i gotta do the big trick that doesn't work either i gotta do the big tree fine fine [Laughter] all right if you feel cool with it i'm thinking about taking a big top this way so we'll put some plywood around this probably if i hit this with big weight we probably want the little strips beside it on both sides and then a big piece of plywood i told my boy when i was leaving this morning that a real man puts his lunch and his boot my daughter made me these gingerbread cookies yesterday he said d is for dad real man probably would put his boots on before he left for work though i don't know if i've ever yeah i have i am having an exceptionally stove up sore morning this is reality tall tree i don't even have to do it got a crew here i'm kind of hoping that when i move around like maybe it'll it'll freeze something up [Music] it's hurting everywhere no excuse for it really don't know what the deal is maybe old age i was watching rico yeah look up rico on um youtube r-i-c-o i don't know how old the guy is i hope he's not my age because he moves like he's 30. that guy is a really good saw man really good climber strong good genetics or something i was watching him this morning and i was like dude yeah anyway better put on the boots now i guess off the ground on both ends so pretty tall tree so ladies and gentlemen august henneke of old would have just ran up that and not fussed with this stuff but i'm kind of thankful that i even feeling feeble i can like there's another way so i'll go up there and i'll be semi-comfy in my current state of disrepair so my rope is 20 feet off the ground 22 feet off the ground on both sides and it's a 200 foot rope and it's nowhere near the top where it goes over so this is a tall tree for sure i always do a big follow-through like this very graceful hey i thought it would be fun to just show a couple simple cuts so this this tree we could speed line it we could crane it if it weren't so tall but we could also do a little freestyle on the on the limbs because with a few cutting tricks and plywood and key places over the splint sprinklers you can you can manipulate the pieces even if they overhang the dogwood down there or something you can manipulate them and get them in where you want them with no ropes and save some time so i'll just show a few cuts as they occur to me limb by limb if i think something is interesting this first one is just the classic uh peel so we'll we'll peel it down so if i start here just with no face cut and and i cut here and i kind of cut into the collar here a little bit it'll peel down and it'll peel down kind of this way not straight down if i come straight like this and it'll put peel straight down if i were to come in here it would peel out towards me if i come in here it should peel that way a little sometimes you can just run with it as it's peeling and cut it off as it gets over away from the dogwood super basic so let's just do it real quick [Music] now this one i can peel it straight down and flop it out like that or i could undercut it and drop it flat i think i'll just peel it down and kick the butt out i'll show you in a second so it has this banana shape toward that tree so when it hits it would it would kind of banana out toward that tree so i'll give a little kick with my with my spur as it's coming off now this one goes right out over the on that one i trees not cut into the collar as much and so it was more brittle and i was able to plan that out so that i wanted it to come off at the end of the cut when it would be here so this one is a little funky it's it's been broken in the past um i don't know if i can cut into the collar enough to hang it up without it popping early and hitting the dogwood hanging it up on this one will be a little more difficult and then even if it pops straight if if i hit even if i get it straight before it pops off it could ride down there and hit and the bow of the limb will make it fly that way into the dogwood so is it worth trying or i could just quickly put a sling on it and hang it and do something like that and uh it's it's borderline but i mean if there's a little bit at stake it's a little more of a thrill i guess oh yeah so the old the old spur kick as it comes off is pretty handy huh we want them pointed this way and that way this one i can take in two if i reach out and get that and peel that under and then do the other one down it's [Applause] easier ah so i cut it in three pieces that's a pain for them but it's on the ground and there was no rope rigging so here we are again dogwood under me okay if you cut out here into the more brittle a fur lamb will will let go it'll it'll let go part way through the cut a pine limb often if it's if it's perpendicular like this a pine limb often will not even if you're outside of the collar you can you can hinge a pine limb down fur is more brittle so with this one i'll cut into the collar a little bit into the log a little bit in order to hang this up so even when i even cutting it cutting into the log a little bit that sucker went pow and i was able to to put some english on it they're not as reliable to hang up for a tree not as reliable [Applause] wow [Applause] [Music] this one i don't feel like i'm in the best work position for it something that i feel right here in my gut and i'd rather be on that side but i don't feel like changing my work positioning if i was over there and i was shoving it this way i would like it better so but i keep a couple slings on my belt so i put a sling on it hooked to that branch and um i'll just hang it up and then and then take care of it [Music] and i'll do it as though i was gonna hinge it out there and we'll see if it would work see it would have it would have worked but still i wasn't sure so now i don't have to sacrifice my sling i can take my sling back and i can use it again wow wow this one too to me just seems a little husky to be playing with right there no let's see if i would have got it wow it might have been okay watch for a sling on this one jeff [Applause] see i never would have got that big one if i had kept my cut like this it would have just broken and flew off but my cut was in so i was grabbing some hinge out of the log out of the the branch union to the to the tree in here be careful playing like that okay youtube classically another one right over the dogwood if i angle my cut into the log then i'll at least get it swinging it won't just go pow and fall off flat but hopefully i can hang it and then kick it because then you're not doing this these cuts on the fly as much [Music] [Applause] all right youtube here we are again same same thing same thing this one's kind of uh can we i'm gonna have to say i'm gonna yes to say yes i think i can get it to hang enough to to go in there where i want it i'll cut off some of this so that as i have to deal with it spontaneously i don't get stabbed by them so youtube what might be fun is if i showed you what can happen if you if you hang it on too long and cut it off at the end of its travel it'll fly pretty far the opposite way that it started so i can swing it under and and go quite a ways watch this see and if you know that you can do that then you can miss things it's another trick and uh it's kind of a what do you call that a dark art it can be done though so [Music] everybody clear so youtube another thing we do pacific northwest style it's not like it's my thing or anything it's considered dark and scary by easterners some of them anyway definitely europeans when we make our cuts we save fuel by making one pass rather than snap cutting because then you cut twice you have to take the saw out halfway through and put it in again you end up cutting more wood because you you have to bypass your cuts and then you snap it off we make one pass we kind of rock the the piece a little to get our saw out sometimes and then we go for the flatness the flatness i'm going to go for here is the kind you get by when it when it starts to go you shove the bottom so that the bottom heats up with the rotation that you started by tipping it okay watch [Applause] [Music] so people would say dodgy sketchy oh my goodness and because of that i'm not teaching this i'm showing you for historical purposes at this time in history pacific northwesterners would cut like this before the world changed and everybody got micro managed to oblivion they were able to get their flatness quick if they didn't talk too much i got myself worked up and i shoved the butt so hard it passed the rotation just a little by the way youtube i've been working out so that's you know do you even lift do you even shove bro oh dude that's a t-shirt do you even shove bro oh i like that i think i'll take one more and then we'll crane these out gentle or something like oh it's that time okay
