look at that it's pretty bad dude okay everybody here we are we've got a sketchy dicey one today let me see if i can show you this we've got a big leaf maple right here on the other side of this fence and if you look up you can see this thing broke in half and it's hung up in that cedar and this top is looming over this deck and these two fences so it's kind of tricky we've got our crane um i'm not sure i'm thinking it's about 90 feet away or so so the the plan is gonna change it's hard to come up with the concrete plan right here um because i don't know exactly what we're good for with the crane at that distance and i don't know the extent to which it's hung up in this tree so you know if you guys have done this sort of thing you know that it's you try to come up with a plan the best you can on the ground but inevitably the plan seems to always change once you get up there because you can't really tell exactly what's going on down here and it gets kind of tricky dealing with all the the tension and compression and figuring out how it's hung up so we're gonna get the crane set up we're gonna fly out there this is kind of a strange it looks like it just broke right in the middle of the tree so kind of a kind of strange but it happens so we're gonna get set up and we're gonna see what we can do and hopefully in the process not damaged i mean look at there's all this stuff to break so we'll see how it goes it looks it looks sketchy hey look bees i don't know why but i get asked in like every video if i've seen those giant murder hornets that we have here no i have not seen them i think they've been like a handful of sightings those are like little tiny bees i have not seen the giant murder hornets so don't ask you spin that tire yep [Applause] okay so i get a lot of questions about what gear i use and i use a bunch of different stuff it depends on what i'm doing largely but i'll just show you what i'm using today so this is about a hundred feet of this called adrenaline it's a 32 strand double braid i think it's made by toefl burger i think and i really like it it works really well in the mechanical devices only downside is it's pretty heavy especially when it's wet it's a rub runner pro it just came out i like it a lot i like these carabiners these are petzl amd carabiners just pretty basic nice carabiners ms 200 ported by west coast big fan of the 200s they're kind of a lot of work to keep alive forever but it's worth it these are my gecko carbon fiber spurs they weigh like nothing they're pretty expensive but they're the best in my opinion i've used a few different types and i'm a huge huge fan of these i've tried the aluminum ones and for some reason that i can't explain i don't like them i don't find them comfortable except for whatever reason i like these spurs are kind of funny like it really varies from person to person what you're gonna like so um i recommend if you work with people try theirs before you buy your own because they're just finicky they're they're not all good for all people and i don't know why this is my climber double ended flip line i did a little tutorial on that long time ago i just got this harness this is a petzl sequoia it's the srt version um i've never had one with shoulder straps i'm trying it out i've had it for about a week i i like it so far the shoulder straps help displace the weight onto my shoulders if i've got a big saw in a tree this is a silky sugoi i love this hand saw for big stuff so i can get it out because it's got this little hook and i can just like grab little dead twigs with that thing and it works great um let's see not much else just a boring generic cheap chainsaw lanyard i kind of want to get a little longer one this is just a little ditty bag it has a couple of these straps in them you can use them for all sorts of things and then it's got this omni block in it usually i just clip this stuff to my harness but it snags on stuff so i'm going to try stuffing it in this bag and see if that's a little better i often switch up what i'm using when i go up i'm always experimenting trying to figure out what what stuff i like best and for which trees so that's the gist of it that's what i'll be using today a lot of stuff is pretty expensive maybe not best for if you're not sure you really want to climb as a career maybe get some cheaper stuff first but then again if you're sure you want to do this for a career i say don't bother getting the cheap stuff you're going to upgrade later anyways so oh and then i i use this little uh rock exotica transporter i like that to keep stuff racked on my hip so that's about the gist of what i'm going to be using today um yeah so hopefully maybe that was helpful i i get like a lot of a ton of questions in the comments about what gear i'm using so i'm not gonna go through all of it but that's what i'm using for now all right i'm gonna head on up so yeah i don't really have a concrete plan yet so we're just gonna get me hovering over that big scary thing and then i'll try to figure out what i'm going to do from there so i'm not bringing any slings with me or anything like that so i don't know if i'm going to be picking stuff right away if i'm going to start whittling things so like i said you come up with a plan it always changes so just going to dangle over it and then see how it goes there's like washington you can see seattle across the water cascade mountains it's kirkland scary tree of death oh boy holy smokes okay um all right what the heck are we going to do with this all right you have to stay there for a minute brian let's go down wow that is so bizarre just broke right in the middle there it's pretty bad dude wow look at that just sheared off right in the middle of the trunk how bizarre trees do such weird things sometimes look at that okay so i've been standing here for like 10 minutes scratching my head so we've got a bunch of issues going on here you know obviously this is just broken it's just resting there this piece probably weighs more than what the crane is rated for out here so you don't want to pick it and also there's no way we'd be able to pick it anyways because a lot of those branches are forking through that cedar which is gonna cause all the more you know the crane's gonna have to work even harder to pry that stuff out so we need this thing to be smaller before we can pick it and the problem is if i just start cutting and reducing weight some of the stuff like here it's easy to tell i can cut it and this thing is going to stay in place but all that stuff is all jumbled up and it's really hard to tell exactly where the tension and compression is so i'm worried that if i start cutting over there i'm going to display something this is going to shift and this whole thing is going to come crashing down really violently we don't want anything to happen quickly we don't want anything to happen violently so i think what i need to do is i need to tie i need to wrangle this thing up i need to wrangle the tip to that cedar and the butt to this maple i need to tie the thing up so that i can cut away weight and you know if anything shifts this thing will be caught by the other trees by the ropes the idea is i want to get it as small as possible before i commit to it because once we tie the crane to this thing and start lifting we're committed you know you can't go back we can't put it back so i want this thing to be as light as possible so we know for sure that it's safe to lift it with the crane so this is going to be kind of tricky but i'm going to go down we're gonna get some ropes we're gonna wrangle this thing up a little better and just really slowly we're gonna start whittling away and um you know in these precarious situations i always and i do this with pruning too my general philosophy is cut everything that is not under tension everything that's just you know like this is just hanging hanging over nothing you know cut everything that's really obvious first and that will simplify it you might look at a part of the tree and not know what to do you cut some stuff that's really obvious and now the tree looks a little different and it's gonna make a little more sense so i'm gonna get rid of everything i can get rid of that doesn't involve me thinking really hard and then i'll look at the stuff that's you know the stuff that's under pressure and try to go from there and figure it out so this stuff's really tedious you got it you've got to do this stuff slowly and carefully so anyways i'm going to go grab some ropes go ahead and take me back yep kick me back let's go get some rigging stuff i have to lift this up that's why it's so heavy useless padding yeah the foam it's heavy foam why do we even bring that thing with us we've never used that okay a little more yeah oh hi how are you guys doing are you ready hey little guy dude give me a hug he did he said hi jake you give me a hug yeah do the same with brian yeah you like the videos he cuts the treats whoa i like your stick wow you are so strong you're strong like brian i could pick up a way bigger [Applause] all right well good to see you guys okay brian cable down yep right we're gonna tie the top half on first can you see my rope is the uh is the camera rolling kevin well caleb's working his body so that's happening let's see never mind by all means all right got one in the ropes so brian go ahead and boom left okay cable down okay hold it all right so i'm gonna just pick one of these to tie on i guess i'm just going to turn on this one since it's the biggest caleb are you by the rope okay go ahead and pull that tight all right so that's tied on okay brian are you brian are you available okay here's brian working now [Laughter] go ahead and cable me out of here yeah that's good so caleb i'm gonna have you tie on the other the half inch rigging line over where this maple is going cable down okay it's just barely long enough all right now i like carabiners at all but because you know we're trying to be careful here i'm not going to be using carabiner for this stuff i'm just going to tie knots the carabiners are nice and they're fast but i want as few things that have the potential to fail and this system as possible so we're not going to use carabiners for this stuff you know the more you add into the system the more potential for stuff there is to fail or break if it's just little things here and there you know i like carabiners but this you want to do this really slow methodical okay so this one's tied on the butt it's a half inch rigging line samson that one's 5 8 pelican rope they're both strong enough for this so you're gonna go ahead and lock that off caleb so we got the poor wrap down there we got the grcs over there the advantage of the grcs is you can lift and lower the porter app you can just kind of lower stuff down with it the advantage of the port wrap is it's a lot lighter and it costs uh like a lot less i think it's like 150 bucks for a quarter wrap like three grand for a grcs so we're using both but we're putting the grcs on that one because i think that's where we're really gonna be holding the weight potentially okay so we just spent quite a bit of time setting up the rigging and everything and it might have been totally unnecessary for all we know brian can grab this thing and pluck it out but you know tree work we don't know what the stuff weighs until we're committed to it so there's no point in rushing it there's no point in guessing so we've got it tied up if anything happens if anything shifts the ropes will catch this thing i'm going to try to reduce as much weight as possible before we pick this thing you know it might be a little too you know for all we know we could have just like i said i'm just repeating myself by now but you know what i mean just take your time and this is it's better it's better to just take a little longer to set up the rigging just in case anything goes wrong so now i'm just gonna go down and i'm gonna start whittling away everything that's not under attention and that'll simplify the whole thing and we're gonna have a lot of fun all right brian just hang out there for a while [Music] okay one more thing before i start cutting i just gotta say this so i'm like uh like i try to be safe like i take that stuff seriously sometimes you really gotta think about what you're doing so usually you always want to double tie in before you start cutting i don't want to be attached to this thing the safest thing is for me to be tied into the crane so in an ideal circumstance you want to be double tied in when you're running the chainsaw so if you cut one line the other will catch you but like i said i don't want to be on this thing i'm just going to be um i'm just going to be attached to here i'm going to be cutting below me sometimes you got it sometimes it's a little safer if you you know you know what i mean it's practicality over ideology i'm also going to be one handing the saw here a little bit um you know i i think tweeting the saw is a good idea usually but sometimes you're better sometimes you got to bend the rules a little bit to be safer you know if i can't really move and i have to position myself awkwardly to use two hands um i'm not going to do it if i'm going to be risking dropping things on stuff down there you know i'll cut and chuck stuff i'm not going to use my hand saw for all that i'll run out of energy immediately so you know i'm all i'm all for doing things safely tweeting the saw double tying in but sometimes really think about what you're doing sometimes it's counter-intuitive but you're better off you know with the you know what i mean just put thought into what you're doing so when you see if you see me one-handing the saw if you see that i'm not double tied in when i'm whittling away at this stuff it's not because i'm negligent or i don't take that stuff seriously it's because sometimes the safer option is to do things that are a little unorthodox so okay let's get to work [Applause] you know like this here i'm not gonna cut this and let it fall and i'm not gonna rig it up what am i gonna rig it off of i'm just gonna cut it and check it it's gonna be fine okay [Music] wow left four [Music] wow every pound we take off makes this thing a little safer getting all this little stuff off it makes a big difference [Applause] [Music] you know another thing about getting all the simple stuff first is that uh it gives your brain a little time in the back your mind to think about you know the final execution of this so while i'm whittling away at this it's both getting simpler and you know and it gives me more time to really think about what i want to do because the critical part is at the end when we actually extract this thing out of here so if you don't know what to cut always just look for the most simple thing and go from there so let's keep whittling away this stuff makes a big difference every little tiny cut is a few pounds off this thing we want this as light as possible before we commit to it big d watsky here coming at you live from some person's backyard i i don't have a name yet just scott slippery nipple scott we got our packtalk bolds here scott doesn't have his yet so he doesn't get a nickname i never i don't think i've ever had a nickname really like ever in your life but they call me scotty [Music] [Applause] and so you know i want to figure out what i can cut like if i try to shake this this thing is stout like i can feel that's wedged in there if i do this thing this thing's all jiggly and loose so i know that this isn't bearing any weight i i you know i look for everything that's loose and jiggly i cut all that first [Music] [Music] another thing you can do if you're worried about hitting stuff and you're an awkward place you can make what i call chopping salad just make it so small that it couldn't possibly hurt anything if it hits the fence you know [Music] [Applause] [Applause] jake jake what's your name treason treason [Laughter] well they used to call me shirley freckles that should be it shirley freckles he says he's a valley friend i know that's what i know of i used to have one oh no based on your last video maybe jake the snake what about average jake average jake he's average jake [Music] so like here now i'm a little confused because all this seems like it's pretty tight i'm just going to move on to a different area you know i'm not going to spend a whole bunch of time thinking about it i'm just going to go to wherever it's more simple and always come back to whatever you [Music] skipped [Music] [Music] wow [Music] [Music] here [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh makes it really really hard for me to hold on to branches and stuff with my legs go take off my jacket [Music] [Applause] [Music] boom up wow [Music] wow [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] hmm all right so we're getting there we're still whittling away um you know this is tree works always dangerous it's just about getting it you know as least dangerous as possible so you gotta be careful with this stuff you know if if you get out to a job and you're not sure and you're you know nervous or scared just don't do it you can have somebody else do it i've walked away from jobs before and i didn't have as much experience and just let somebody else do it this stuff is it's dangerous you know you gotta you gotta be focused you gotta take it seriously you're dealing with this kind of stuff so never you know be too embarrassed to just walk away from a project it's it's really not i mean people die doing this stuff you got to be careful you know and eventually you get more and more used to it you trick your intricate job until you get pretty comfortable doing it but you know never be afraid to be like hey i'm not comfortable doing this and if and if you know the guys you're working with are giving you a hard time well to a certain extent guys always give each other a hard time right but if if people are really pushing you to do something when you're legitimately you know worried about a dangerous situation you know you might want to consider who you're working with you know you gotta when you're on a crew with somebody you gotta look out for each other so if somebody's telling you you've got to go up there you got to do it and you know you don't really know what you're doing you know maybe maybe you shouldn't be working with that person because this is no joke you know you gotta be you gotta take the stuff seriously but it is fun you know that's that's the appeal of it right high stakes high fun wow [Music] you gotta watch out for stuff look how big this branch is if i cut into this you see how much pressure this maple's got this bowed way down you know cedar's strong it'll bend way down if i say i took my saw and i went like this cut it right here this branch would break my nose i promise you it would there's so much pressure built up in there so really keep an eye out when you see big bends like that that's you know this is where a lot of tension builds up and a lot of compression on the other side stay away from stuff like that get all the stuff that's loose and jiggly first this stuff is seriously more dangerous than you think [Music] see i'm starting to i'm starting to run out of stuff to cut here because there's a lot of tension and pressure on all this stuff so i'm gonna keep i'm gonna work over here i'm gonna get some of that you know i'm gonna there's still gonna be a lot on this tree when we pick it but i'd rather not cut any of that because i just don't know what the tree will do if i cut that stuff so keep looking for a loose and jiggly stuff to cut hey brian you cable up a little bit okay good yeah all this little stuff get it out of there every twig makes a big difference plus when we lift it out a bunch of hangers are going to fall all over the place so the fewer hangers are safer everything's gonna be get all this stuff just hanging up here and of course you don't always have the option having a crane crane makes it a heck of a lot easier and a heck of a lot safer cable upgrade but the principles cable up but the principles are all the same good the principles are all the same with or without the crane you want to get whatever you can safely remove out of the tree first before sometimes not always it really depends on what you're doing there's no there's no one good method to do this you really gotta you gotta improvise a lot when you're doing stuff like this [Music] wow drizzle a little bit okay remember how cluttered this was a minute ago you know and i was thinking that i wouldn't be able to cut anymore well i went up a little higher and the next thing you know this stuff was all available now to cut you know that's what i mean by just keep whittling whatever you can [Music] hello yes [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hold it okay cable up cable way up i'm gonna try it wrassle this hanger out give away up yeah yeah all right all right i reckon we're about there let's go ahead and take me to the front i'll grab some slings we'll pick this this bad boy [Applause] all right so i've got my sling and i went and i got my 300 foot rope i got a longer rope because after i sling it up if i would have used that that short rope was nice for when i was working in there because i could move it around really easy but now that i'm going to wrangle this thing up if i would have used a short rope i wouldn't have had enough rope to get to the ground so now i've got my 300 foot rope same kind adrenaline no i don't need a chainsaw because it's broken we're just going to pluck it out there's no there's nothing holding it there hey all right brian cable down okay that's i'm a little more okay that's good i think that's perfect let's just leave it there all right i go down to here more yeah cable down all right good all right okay so see i got the half hitch here and then the cow hitch here and that will allow this thing to lift it from both of these points because if i just tie it to any one of these maybe it'll break when we lift it this way picks up the whole thing at once so caleb in just a minute we're gonna loosen these ropes up okay so go ahead and undo the blue well actually sorry sorry brian go ahead and put just a couple hundred pounds in this we're not trying to lift it i just just get the lines taught would you all right um okay caleb undo the blue line all right we're gonna go undo the orange rope now here's the blue rope okay all right all right you're off so see how much cleaner this all looks now now that i've gotten all this garbage cut out of here you know i probably reduced this thing by a thousand pounds by wheeling all that away so now we're taking the ropes off we're just going to commit to it now you know um you have to be so careful you can't stress that enough and even if we would have been able to pick the whole thing because brian's good for 3 900 pounds which we should be pretty good now it's just like i said you can't put it down once you pick it up so now we're tying it up we're committing to it i'm gonna get out of here and we're gonna lift it out and it should be light enough now that we shouldn't have any problems looks like caleb's got this knot loosened up thank you do this go ahead pull this out go ahead pull the orange rope out now i'm gonna get out of this uh i'm gonna out of here brian and we're gonna go for it that's totally broken it's totally severed so i shouldn't need to cut anything we're just gonna pull this out all right heading down is everybody clear we're all safe all right let's just do it over here all right brian go ahead let's get it out of there you should be able to just boom up no going back now here we go the butt's free yeah keep going maybe just cable up now nobody's under that cedar right okay maybe boom a hair to your left oh yeah you are okay you're looking good okay cable on up man that thing is long look at that we did it it's out tree is extracted and look at that we got it's pretty clean there's not much left on it so what's it weigh right now brian so it's 1800 pounds right now so it'll be interesting to see how much i uh how much weight i cut off when we crane all the brush out oh boy nice look at that just sheared right off right in the middle of the tree for no reason how weird is that [Music] [Music] um [Music] ah all right we're pretty much almost all done we're just putting this stuff away we got to crane out the what's uh left of the brush so they're doing that right now i'm going to go back up that cedar bryan's got to put me up there i got some hangers up there i'm gonna fish out it's just a bit of cleanup and then we're all done let's paint out that bundle okay so that's the second pile we're craning out they're both both piles around 400 pounds the so that means the whole thing was around 2 600 pounds huh not including what's still buckler yeah there's still a lot so it's probably more like roughly 3 000 pounds or so we're good for 39. okay all right brian all right brian you're free i'm off the crane i am in the cedar i'm going to throw this brush where i was throwing brush before look caleb's gonna go clean up that maple a bit ready tomorrow [Applause] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] look i got some big hangers up here and what not that cool caleb all right you have fun yeah i'll be here man there's a lot up here oh geez oh i didn't even i thought it was like a little branch and expect that we'll take out the fence with the hangers looks good caleb looks like a beautiful fine prune it looks really natural like we were never here i guess i'll just stay up here then i guess yeah all right putting the crane away we're pretty much done so everything went well today and you know we didn't have any damages we we didn't even have any close calls we really didn't even have any scary moments went pretty well so we could have done this faster we could have showed up and just you know put the crate right on it and just went for it but you know just the cost benefit analysis of doing something like that you know it's just not worth it if you're not sure so we took our time we pieced it out we set up a lot of rigging and we probably didn't need to do all that stuff there's a cedar it actually looks pretty decent um they're leaving the rest of the street for some reason but it all it all worked out it was all safe the fence the deck the other fence everything was saved out so you know the guys did a good job and you know everybody's happy like i said we were just we were slow and methodical and everything worked out great so you know if you're doing firewood or if you're doing tree work or logging no matter what you're doing if you're running a saw just just be careful you know i'm not going to preach at you too much but this stuff's dangerous that cedar really doesn't look too bad i can't really tell from this side those are such tough trees those cedars but anyways i hope you like that um you know don't forget to like and subscribe i appreciate it and i think that's about it for this big sketchy maple removal so all right guys i'll see you later have a good one good job brian nice job [Applause] good job good job kevin way to get those angles good job scott oh wow i got one you got one good day [Music] you
