Slightly related: When I was in grade school, we studied Lord of the Flies for pretty much an entire term. It was only years later that I learned that it was a direct parody (perhaps not 'parody,' but certainly 'deconstruction of') a similar children's novel called The Coral Island. Never once in our months of studying this novel were we made aware of this connection.
It's like meeting someone whose favorite movie of all time is Spaceballs, but has never heard of or seen Star Wars.
Surely you can't be serious?
Also, Airport 1975

...I picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue..
Someone told me about this a few years ago. If you're a real aficionado of Airplane (I am), you should definitely watch Zero Hour on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It's not funny per se, just interesting to see just how much they copied. I think I rented it on Amazon video for a couple bucks.
IIRC, they actually ended up buying the rights to Zero Hour! before Airplane! was released to avoid any legal problems.

I really don't know of any equivalent to this. I mean, they start with "it's an entirely different type of flying, altogether!" and just added a new line to make it bizarre-hilarious.
One of my favs is the radar operator's astonishment "he's all over the place! 900ft... 1300ft..." then adds "-what an asshole!"
I suppose MST3K does something similar- sometimes adding on "new lines", but it's not in-film satire.
Does the guy who saves the day have a drinking problem?
