hey guys I was surfing the internet before I came across this video I just sued the school system and it was by this princey a guy you know I watched it and this video was amazing like oh my god there's videos of me pretty I was making the validus points I've ever seen in my life so I was like why don't I see well my own principal would think about what he's saying and you know he agreed and you know I did it so here it is ladies and gentlemen of the jury today on trial we have modern-day schooling glad you could come not only does he make fish climb trees but also makes them climb down and do it ten-mile run tell me school are you proud of the things you've done turning millions of people into robots do you find that fun do you realize how many kids relate to that fish swimming upstream in class never finding their gifts thinking they are stupid believing they are useless well the time has come no more excuses I called school to the stand and accuse him of killing creativity individuality and being intellectually abusive he's an ancient institution that has outlived his usage so your honor this concludes my opening statement and if I may present the evidence of my case I will prove it proceed Exhibit A here's a modern day phone recognize it here's a fall from 150 years ago big difference right stay with me here's a car from today and here's a car from 150 years ago big difference right we'll get this here's a classroom of today and here's a class we use 150 years ago now ain't that a shame and literally more than a century nothing has changed yet you claim to prepare students for the future but with evidence like that I must ask do you prepare students for the future or the past I did a background check on you and let the record show that you were made to train people to work in factories which explains why you put students in straight rolls nice and neat tell them sit still raise your hand if you want to speak if I'm a short break to eat and for eight hours a day tell him what to think oh and make them compete to get an A a letter which determines product quality hints great aim of meat I get it back then times were different we all have a past I myself am no Gandhi but today we don't need to make robots zombies the world has progressed and now we need people who think creatively innovatively critically independently with the ability to connect see every scientist will tell you that no two brains are the same and every parent with two or more children will confirm that claim so please explain why do treat students like cookie cutter frames or snapback hats given them this one-size-fits-all crap watch your leg sorry your honor but if a doctor prescribed the exact same medicine to all of his patients the results will be tragic so many people would get sick yet when it comes to school this is exactly what happens this educational malpractice where one teacher stands in front of twenty kids each one having different strengths different needs different gifts different dreams and you teach the same thing the same way that's horrific ladies and gentlemen the defenders should not be acquitted this may be one of the worst criminal offenses ever to be committed mention the way you treat your employees objection overruled I want to do this it's a shame I mean teachers have the most important job on the planet yet they're underpaid no wonder so many students are short-changed let's be honest teachers should earn just as much as doctors because a doctor can do heart surgery and save the life of a kid but a great teacher can reach the heart of that kid and allow him to truly live see teachers are heroes that often get blamed but they're not the problem they work in a system without many options on the right curriculums are created by policymakers most of which have never taught a day in their life just obsessed with standardized tests they think bubbling in a multiple-choice question will determine success that's outlandish in fact these tests are too crude to be used and she'll be abandoned but don't take my word for it take Frederick J Kelley the man who invented standardized testing who said and I quote these tests are too cruel to be used and should be abandoned ladies and gentlemen of the jury if we continue down this road the results will be lethal I don't have much faith in school but I do have faith in people and if customized healthcare cars and Facebook pages that it is our duty to do the same for education to upgrade it change it do away with school spirit cuz that's useless unless we're working to bring the spirit of each and every student that should be our task no more common core instead let's reach the core of every heart in every class sure math is important but no more than art or dance let's give every gift an equal chance I know this sounds like a dream but countries like Finland are doing impressive things they have shorter school days teachers make a decent wage homework is non-existent and they focus on collaboration instead of competition but here's the kicker boys and girls their educational system outperforms every other country in the world other places like Cigna poor succeeding rapidly schools like Montessori programs like Khan Academy there is no single solution but let's get moving because while students may be 20% of our population they are 100 percent of our future so let's attend to their dreams and there's no telling what we can achieve this is a world in which I believe a world where fish are no longer forced to climb trees I rest my case I'm in full agreement I think we have a completely archaic system I think having kids and teachers live on a series of bells walking through halls in a building that is rectangular and looks like a factory or some other institution is is is completely at odds with the reality of how students learn today I think that frankly people may think that as principal I have the ability to change this I don't I wish I did I try to find creative ways for students to be able to access learning and and be passionate within the system but I'll tell you right now the way this the only way this changes okay the only way this factory system changes is at the state level and it changes with grete change in graduation requirements as it stands now high school students just like when I was in school my parents were in school in the 60s you have to have you have to have a graduation credits and courses that you don't need that you'll never use that you don't care about okay I don't know that everybody has to sit in an fot class I don't know that everybody has to take frankly four years of math or two years of a world language but allows students to interact with material and learn through technology and then apply that learning we should be an application based learning environment not a read record and regurgitating learning environment and I think until we change our graduation requirements and we don't force kids to sit in seven periods a day for four years to add up to 24 credits or 28 credits or 21 credits or 30 credits depending on the state you live in that it won't change because here's why if you do away with this system this is an instance is like an industry right now if you do away with this system you don't need this 100 million dollar building you don't need 100 million dollar building you don't need 210 staff members you don't need a hundred and three teachers you don't need five assistant principals Hank you may not even need a principal you don't need all these people you don't need these buildings and you don't need the textbook so you don't need the you don't need all this and there are too many people with too many interests tied up in this there are teachers unions there are principal unions there are support staff unions that will fight tooth and nail to keep every last job in a schoolhouse even when they're unnecessary just to protect their own interests there are construction companies there are there are are people and local government who rely on development and rely on these buildings and rely on the reputation of a school to have houses built okay there are textbook companies Pearson for example is one that that has almost a monopoly on on many of our educational resources and textbooks like there is an industry behind this there are people that are tied up in local and national government who have money into this system and I completely agree with him I think teachers are overworked they are underpaid they are some of the most important people in this nation and that we should really value them and and rethink what this looks like I am absolutely behind the the principles that were espouse in that video and I really in a lot of ways couldn't agree more but there that's my reaction I agree I really find it frustrating like how I go into math class and like I always have in the back of my head like I'm never gonna use this like I know because I think once you're like my age like your sophomore you start noticing what you like to do in what I like to do like like in computer science like I like it a lot I would like English sure sure like and like I feel like maybe we should just have freedom of it'd be like a it's like so like you said like there's so many factors yeah I mean I think I honestly think that you could have you could have like a core curriculum in ninth and tenth grade right and then your love of the 12th grade could become you wide open yeah right so at that point you could have take three classes and do internships four tiers and learn and be a fully licensed plumber or electrician or or vocational worker of a so you wanted to and you could graduate and you could work and make 75 grand right out of high school you could potentially do early early enrollment or dual enrollment at MC and earn college credits you could pursue like an IB or an AP education and be prepared for you know a four-year you know traditional college or you could create your own major I mean you could create any type of combination of courses that you would want to take to fulfill what anyone is good at being like molded into yeah absolutely I agree well that was interesting absolutely anytime follow up
