i said i was going to show the good the bad and the ugly and i'm about to show you some things i consider ugly hi i'm george the antique nomad come with me as i wander the country in search of valuable vintage amazing antiques and cool collectibles we'll buy sell and trade at antique mall shops and shows estate sales flea markets thrift stores anywhere people go to find really interesting things that just aren't made anymore so come on let's go hey everybody i'm george the antique nomad we are at our last florida show for the season it's been a wonderful winter season i had the best show i've ever had in the state of florida at the mount dora extravaganza the shows here at west palm beach have been very good we opened yesterday this one has been really great so far and there's some really wonderful merchandise here including fabulous costume jewelry and wonderful boudoir and accessories but there's some cool stuff for guys here too we're going to look for the good the bad and the ugly as we walk around and show you what there is to see this space has a lot of the good great upholstered chair in a name style nice blanco green fish there nice piece of murano glass here but the thing i really like are these italian lucite folding chairs in pink i've only seen them in clear before now you have to be careful about condition because they would scratch really easily if somebody had rivets on their jeans or keys in their pocket you can see on here that's got some scratches but mainly they're in pretty good shape there's no cracks these are fairly expensive and it's something that wasn't necessarily expensive new so it's a good thing to look for in the resale market here's something really old school a little pedestal zenith tv back when zenith was the big tv maker in america made in the chicago area and a texas instruments home computer a ti-99 this is one of the very earliest home computers and they are a lot of collectors for these now the computer era is old enough now that there are a lot of people who want the early stuff and to have that with the original box that's a good piece well this guy was at my estate sale in boynton beach because i see a few things that i know he bought from us including the chimney sweep and i had somebody who really wanted the chimney sweep one of the viewers and i couldn't sell it to him because we'd already sold it at the estate sale so i think i'm gonna strangely enough be buying it back from the guy who bought it for me at the estate sale that happens sometimes now this isn't the most desirable color of finish but this is a great little haywood weight field coffee table with the spider legs now this one does not spin i have the spinning one but mine have the bamboo legs that was called the ashcroft line i have the head of a hitching post for sale but this is a little different kind instead of having the ring in its mouth this one is one cast piece the ring is on the back to hit your horse this looks like it's legit it's been repainted quite a bit but look at the base there's an indication of age there also the casting is a little bit heavy and not as precise as you would expect in a modern piece world cup 94 was a big event in the united states it was the first time world cup soccer had been played here and i went to the opening game in dallas i don't remember anybody dressed like this but that's a great peter max print and it's signed for jcc boca raton auction by peter max himself when you're out shopping for glass and you see decanters it's very important with blanco in particular to make sure that the right stopper is in the piece this looks right it seems to fit well but it's actually not correct because this would have been a spire important to know your glass before you go out shopping that is a replacement stopper i love the little bowl with the faces on it here jonathan adler it's muse i think jonathan adler designed because it is something that is very modernist and has been really well received is going to be something that's collectible in the future for me right now it's a little too recent vintage but i think other people are starting to salt it away these peach blow pieces from the late victorian era are very pretty with the enameling on them here we have some roseville in the bed vases the little pink cherry blossoms and the zephyr lily 75 is a fair price ever lily is a good pattern these are an acrylic artist named carol staub who is a listed artist and acrylic art is starting to be collectible again these are offered at 1200 for the pair i have seen prices significantly higher than that for her work i talked a lot about butterfly wing jewelry and wall pieces but furniture with butterfly wing is something that i almost never have seen and look at this it's an entire collection of butterfly wings in one piece the ship's wheel is really neat this is a great little piece of furniture very much in keeping with the florida market but i would think this could be popular in a lot of coastal places well there's a neatly sight table that i like we do have some outdoor vendors this time at the show this is the back breezeway there's also people in front of the breezeway in front of the building so we've got outside vendors in both places beyond the table which i love that don't have room to put in my car i'm going to see if there's anything else i can use here well this is out of francisco and she's actually putting me in her phone because she has seen me before and is going to subscribe which is very nice and they said that they were doing pretty well that they had a lot of people come out yesterday and they have a hodgepodge of different things the newer and older a lot of estate sale finds this is a nice old piece here i don't know whether it was supposed to be a book stand or a doorstop polaroid 330 that's going to be something that people are looking for now there's a lot of interest in old polaroids and this one's a different model than i've shown in the past this one has the lens on top it also has a timer on the back that was a new feature and that's something a little more deluxe for polaroid so now i have to admit i'm curious to see what they're asking okay he's going to show us uh what he bought inside yesterday see we all buy from each other too i don't have any idea what is it but the first star first is oh 1893 1893 no let's flip it around this little tiny key oh yes i don't have any idea but each key has a number oh that's interesting like uh for example this is 24 this is 14. so when you pull it out it's just like this interesting well this is going to be our puzzle for the day they're all different lengths if you know what this is leave a message in the comments because i've never seen this piece before and we would all like to know exactly oh thank you that's very interesting oh and i need to give you ten dollars for this unfortunate one of the times is broken but it is a really beautiful piece with the peacock at the fountain there very famous design a bunch of zippo lighters i'm really low on zippo i have not been finding them lately this bracelet with the crest is being shown upside down but let me turn it over and you'll see there that's a nice piece these are various french districts paris provence alsace very popular in the 1950s this sort of jewelry with the crests and crests are popular again now i'm not usually a big fan of anniversary pieces but this fiesta is a color that's difficult to get these purples and lilacs were in production for short periods of time and very desirable because it was a very different color than they've done in fiesta so lilac in particular is definitely something to look for it's full of little jewelry pieces but this big puffy planter is by red wing it is getting harder because people like you have done a really good job at finding it and presenting it and so it's going into collections right and the chinese because there's so many of them if you just take the people in our country that collected it for in the beginning multiply that by seven right if you equate it yes exactly so there's this huge market that's just coming on now and discovering all of this they're fast about learning and picking up stuff they're very interested yes they seem like they really grasp it quickly and then they really do learn what the best is and they buy it and you know it's smart what are these pieces here the monkeys and the oh all that all that's kind of fine the entire it's all kenneth lane the entire trail these are amazing pieces i i hear about kenneth lane and the pieces i see usually are pretty small and not very interesting compared to this these are great those are all good early from the very beginning of them to like the there's nothing there later did they have a lot of it made for them yeah it was um yeah they didn't really do any manufacturing yeah i thought it was all produced to their designs mostly in rhode island now in china i think there's still some made in rhode island really oh that's interesting i didn't know if there was much of a jewelry industry left in rhode island i know there was so much there originally and what are these with the pastels there's this everything's home all hope it's one series really what a fantastic collection that's the most elegant i think of the kobe stuff oh absolutely they're just beautiful and the the colors of the stones the depth of the color and the metal i always thought it was 30s but it turns out it's 50s it looks 50s from the colors that sort of reminds me of holly craft uh on a much grander scale yeah very period and then these are nettie rosenstein here make light roast is nutty this one is yeah okay and then the other pieces are westbrook are are there they're there each one of those is that that's that's less bernard okay and this is monet and this wow that's the nicest piece of bonus it really is and the fact that the cloth survived yes yes that's amazing i've never seen with cloth in it the purple one is um french or austrian and they're attributed to cis countess cis and then the bottom two or that one the weed is douge wonderful pieces ah thank you that's great these are names and uh some of the dough i've got to be honest i've never heard of it a little bit smart i find a lot of but um diana from jewels of fantasy and i've had a conversation about this for years that my theory is that they marked mostly only copies that they did of real jewelry because i see a lot of like 10 carats uh single stone ring like engagement rings and stuff i think they made jewelry copy for uh travel and then they did a line of fantasy stuff that's really incredible i never thought of that making copies to travel with so you didn't have to worry about security yeah because it's always these like big single diamonds like a 10 carat emerald cut diamond or that is fascinating scaparelli those are beautiful pieces of course yeah it's really you know i thought i kind of was over this but all since savory entered the market now i'm really kind of excited about it isn't it great to be re-energized i'm finding that because i'm doing youtube that a bunch of new people are getting involved and things that i sort of had seen a number of times and kind of thought well that's played out well now there's new people interested and it's fun again and i remember why it's so great you're getting the enthusiasm yeah me too yeah i'm so glad to hear that another thing i got a big kick out of this there's this group on youtube now who are all talking about uh bringing back the brooch because they've caught on to the fact that brooches had been soft in the market and they're like well brooches are beautiful and we're gonna start wearing them and pushing them and i think that i'm starting to see more interest in brooches so well and again the chinese that's very much what chinese like they really like they want something that's showy and right there yeah and it's fairly hard to sell them bracelets because they're too big oh that's interesting because i've been finding bracelets easier to sell to americans americans but not not to the people buying for the chinese not for the chinese market that's fascinating the eisenberg is all the both of those trades these trades so good wow yes and it's nice to see interest in eisenberg again because look how beautiful that is i mean and gigantic yeah you could see this from outer space yeah they're just beautiful pieces it's the earlier period yes yeah they they just made such wonderful stuff this is a piece of coral that i've had in a smaller size but look how large that is so fashion market and collector market are different that's a very interesting observation they want to buy a 2 000 pin for their two thousand dollar blouse yes and you know brett has been in the jewelry business for i think his entire adult life and he really knows stuff he really knows his stuff and gets amazing things and so what he's saying is that these items because they're older vintage are going to be collectible like this tray of trifari here whereas this case you see behind is very fashion oriented this is for people to buy because it's wearable because it's a name like chanel because it's something that's very showy and he's saying that the markets really are diverging at this point that the collectors want the old and the fashion people want fashion and that it's not the same customer and that's an interesting thing to know if you're a costume jewelry dealer he also has a wonderful tray of cameos and a lot of really nice coral pieces some har jewelry that's a name that we look for as well i like the celluloid pieces here these are a lot of fun the geisha with all of that jeweling is really something neat here's rabahe i mentioned rabahe recently is another good name to look for in copper jewelry besides the renoir matisse a fun stretch of bake light in here including this one with the multiple colors i think that might be considered philadelphia because of the multi colors look at that wonderful carved wooden piece with the face that is fun and there are a couple of granola cups just a beautiful beautiful selection and what's neat to me is how it's ever changing i mean he really does turn the merchandise he is selling a lot to china right now he says they're interested in broaches but they're not interested in the bracelets because they're too big for them but they're very popular in american circles thankfully we get to keep those here speaking of fashion if you wanted something to go with your jewelry well this dealer has the fashion and just wonderful things just the collection of mirrors alone these hand mirrors with needlepoint and enamel figures and painted portraits there's a crazy wonderful hat the lucite purse collection has changed i know they've sold some and they've added some new ones and these are one of my favorite things so i love showing them but they have curses galore they have natural skin from the 1950s they have these cute little velvet purses from the 1960s they have these basket weaves from the 1970s that are popular the big mesh piece there is very pretty here look at the wonderful delicate beading on that piece and this one with all the rhinestones that would be a lot of fun that looks like christmas to me and then of course one of my favorites are the mesh purses look how beautifully done they are so many different colors and designs available in these they are just show stoppers i can't help but stop and look at them every time i see them in a display they catch my eye so colorful so nicely done you have 1920s vintage in there and then you have this one here which i believe is 1980s when these made a big comeback these 1940s and 50s weaves with the lucite handle i find interesting because the pattern it's basic black but look at all the patterning and the way it's woven and isn't she cute and if you like food while you can cross over into ceramics this is going to be rookwood very little miniature pin dresser cute as can be they're basically match boxes but you could use them for all sorts of sorting this is champ levy this is french enameling that you see inset into the brass here lovely little stamp holders this would have been for your postcard stamps your regular letter stamps and then your special delivery so three different denominations from about 19 teens i've only seen one other of these ever this might be my favorite watch stand look at the snake that is just amazing and of course it's so sinuous that you can figure this is an art nouveau era piece sometime around 1900 to 1910. this is a very pretty bejeweled little frame here as well and it goes well with these wonderful digital boxes i'm a big fan of these they are tiny and tall but they are cute as can be poochy little poochy boots with the fabric inlay and those are 250. now if you haven't been able to get to any of the shows in florida or you don't live in florida fear not because a lot of us folks are from other parts of the country and a lot of these items if they don't sell here may appear at an antique show near you these promoters do shows in ohio nato shows in nashville a lot of the dealers here are from the northeast or the midwest we've got michiganders we've got new yorkers we've got pennsylvanians so if you see something you like well it might appear near you if it doesn't sell at this show this is a great figure here that i'd like to show because it's ceramic it's from about 1900 you can see a mark on here that's sort of indeterminate they're usually european this guy's hard at work but the purpose behind this would have been to have matches near a fireplace there's the striker whenever you see a weird rough spot like this with texture on a piece of ceramic and a bunch of places to hold things you can generally bet that it was a match holder because matches were needed for everything you had to light the fire you had to light the furnace you had to light the stove you had to light candles so there were lots of reasons to need match holders all over the house and that's a pretty neat figural one there well this shaker laying here is ten dollars the only question is does the cap come off yes and does the lid come off yes it does it works fine in fact if anything it's a little on the loose side which is good because they're often very tight it's got all the recipes on it i do well with these i will take that if the owner comes and opens i will be buying this which makes me wonder what they have other things priced you notice everything is laying down these are the dealers in the front foyer this is before you even get into the antique show you get to see all this stuff and because it's kind of breezy today the dealers here and the dealers out back of the hall are having things laid down so that they don't blow over in the wind here is a piece we see a lot this is nylok this is one of the first things they did in the high wood line there's the mark but it has a really nice variegated glaze look how it shades from the pink to the green and it's a very sweet simple style these came out about 1931 when they started doing that line and it helped keep them going through the depression and they're just very elegant and well balanced they're not very expensive because they were very popular in the time so they made a bunch i like this early carnival glass piece because it's got the star of david and the bows around it so it's an interesting pattern and grapes on the bottom sometimes they have a different pattern on the top than the bottom you see this is purple glass but it has a chip so i'm afraid it's going to have to stay here it will not be for me after dawn wooden designed the mickey mouse phone in the treasure craft studios well then other companies responded by saying hey we should do snoopy and woodstock as well this is going to be later 1970s because it's push button this is a very cute circa 1910 series of postcards that's been framed and the series starts with the wedding proposal the truso because she's putting her gibson girl finery together for the wedding there's the wedding itself isn't that beautiful the honeymoon this guy's checking to make sure they actually have their marriage license i think the first evening in their own home oh and look they're smoking cigarettes and their new love because well the honeymoon was successful though a lot of people really enjoy these and it's nice the way that it's been framed and presented here is a very hard to find old radio with the cowboy on it and the pistol points to the broadcast station this is a silver tone so this was sold by sears sometime in the late 40s or early 50s that is a really great and hard to find piece worth a few hundred dollars i said i was going to show the good the bad and the ugly and i'm about to show you some things i consider ugly these are all reproduction cast iron you'll see when you look at them good morning good morning how are you uh end of the season um i'm almost done yes and we're selling everything to get rid of it up to 45 percent up to show me the item i think this one item here might even be 50 45 is enough very good well thank you look at this great collection of the gold dresser boxes and everything that you have it's just really neat to see so many varieties that one's a little different the oval there let's see that that all the glass tops although this one this is that's a music box but also a trinket box you know cute and uh this this one here from france this one here now those are ring boxes that's right as a ring that's why they're round yeah and small neat thank you [Music] i enjoyed the march show because i i tried to bring some different things and you know a lot of folks who come in february because it's so big miss you so then they come back in march and i've always found it to be a good show this is very cute the candlestick with the palette i've never seen anything quite like that is this french um well it's got rem print on there so so there's a chance or dutch yeah that is really something special hello this is susan of sue's antiques and she has been a dealer here for a long time and she is a really nice gal and has really wonderful stuff a lot of silver and silver plate this is a really nice perpetual calendar with the celluloid in here i think that's a very interesting piece and of course i'm a sucker for alligator bookends and letter openers and anything else made of alligators but she has some really beautiful items here and i almost don't even know where to start because she has so many i am particularly a fan of silver overlay so i'll show you some of these now this is an interesting set here the decanter with the bamboo overlay this is japanese fine silver usually and it does look indeed like that is what this is as well and japanese fine silver was very popular especially after the second world war in bar ware sets and it is 95 950 which is higher than sterling that's why it's called fine silver fine silver is above sterling quality this is a wonderful sterling overlay bottle priced at 3.85 the heisey rooster were chanticleer cocktail shaker she's got it at 125. that's a very good price and a very today price those used to sell for about double that they're still very collectible and bar ware collectors are really enjoying them the bell here very nice little hotel bill and look at that micro mosaic frame that is a really pretty piece she has some various pieces of tiffany silver over here and the designs are so balanced and so well done the shell is lovely the bowl is just scooped in exactly the right way even the tricorn piece that's tiffany here you can tell that they were the design leaders because so many other things look like this but this is where it came from and then she has just a ton of little sewing implements patting shells and needle cases a whole bunch of sterling thimbles thimbles are an area of collectibility all in their own there are people who collect nothing but thimbles because they're small but you can find some really good ones and some very expensive ones some are made of gold a lot have the enameling at the bottom because they started to be given as gifts and presentation pieces and then there's one even shaped like an old open bucket very cute buckles and money clips in this case [Music] and then a lot of things related to tea lots of tea infusers all sorts of different shapes and styles some are american some are english she just has a really great variety and she's very careful about how she buys so she always has very nice things here's another one of these spaces you can just move right into really interesting paintings the way they put this together is both collector and decorator oriented which i think is a really good way to display if you have the talon it's not my strong suit but boy it looks great in here and they even have television if you need it well i said i'd show you the good the bad and the ugly this might qualify as ugly but it's really fun i think it might also be good it's sort of an american gothic with the people wearing cow skulls as faces this is an artist piece you can see the signature here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well we were just talking about how we all admired this piece it was in another dealer's space and this lovely lady has purchased it and it it's funny because i looked at it and thought it looks similar to hager but it's not and i couldn't find the mark but it is jaroo and it's just hard to read in the uh sticker there but it is a jar piece from california right around 1980 and what a great glaze they would put something just like treasure crafted in the glaze to make it crackle in the kiln deliberately so you got that appearance of crackling through age and it's a really nice celadon color so what a great piece and you said you paid 75 i think you got a wonderful deal my friend dave just got this piece and he asked me to put it in his booth because he was a little short on space and i was happy to do it because it is world war one it is original you will see this graphic reproduced on no i don't know aluminum or tin or sheet metal now in a smaller size but we know this one's real it does have a little bit of damage we took it out and you could feel that those are actual tears an actual pinhole where it was pinned and the dot pattern is correct when you look up close such pathos in his expression is first world war you have a vickers machine gun on the right and a winchester on the left war is held but it does leave us with some good graphic art i'm across from margaret this time she's my friend who's originally a northwesterner like i am but is in florida now and i showed her stuff before because she's got these great green linen bags and people are using them for all sorts of farmhouse state court cottage core you can see how people are reupholstering with them but what i was hoping to show you this time instead was some of the vintage fabric that she carries because it's so colorful and fun and i didn't really spend a lot of time on this the last time that i showed her booth look at all of the varieties this is so colorful and so much fun bark cloth was really a big deal in the 1950s and it was all vat dyed there are later versions of dark cloth made in the 90s that are dyed in a different matter but you can take a look at the edges here and they oftentimes have information on them guaranteed wash tested in other words it's not going to lose the color and have it wash out back in the day you would see curtains made of these upholstery that was bark cloth and so many fun patterns there's florals there's berries just about any color you can think of some designs are very elaborate and some are a little more modernist and then some are very modernist looking this one from the 50s with the chartreuse and green is very sputniky looking even though those are florals and you can go from fun light colors to very dramatic like these printed on black and this on the blue i think really pops i have my rattan furniture done in this sort of a floral in fact i had it redone so that it would be as close to the original as possible and she has even little pieces of scraps that you could use for small pillows some people i've even seen frame these in a frame and use them as a picture i just love the stuff here's some of the more modern designs that you can find these are the most desirable because the modernist love to redo things in these and if you can find the curtains where they're not water stained or chewed down near the floor or faded to death the curtains sell for really good prices thanks for joining me again in the fun and fascinating
