answer us lord for your mercy is kind in the abundance of your mercies look upon us in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all [Music] r brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy let us pray almighty ever-living god look with compassion on our weakness and ensure us your protection by stretching forth the right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord if you remove from your missed oppression false accusation and malicious speech if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted then light shall rise for you in the darkness and the gloom shall become for you like midday then the lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land he will renew your strength and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring whose water never fails the ancient runes shall be rebuilt for your sake and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up repair of the breach they shall call you restore of ruined homesteads if you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day if you call the sabbath a delight and the lord's holy day honorable if you honor it by not following your ways seeking your own interest or speaking with malice then you shall delight in the lord and i will make you ride on the heights of the earth i will nourish you with the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken the word of the lord teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth incline your ear o lord answer me for i am jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] i take no pleasure in the death of the wicked man says the lord but rather in his conversion that he may live praise to you lord jesus christ kingdom and lush glory the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus saw a tax collector named levi sitting at the custom post he said to him follow me and live leaving everything behind he got up and followed him then levi gave a great banquet for him in his house and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at the table with them the pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples saying why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply those who are healthy do not need a physician but the sick do i have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners the gospel of the lord in today's gospel we just heard about the calling and the conversion of levi the tax collector traditionally it is believed that levi is another name for the apostle matthew because in the gospel of matthew there is another parallel passage with very very similar uh events going on but there the name is matthew so traditionally um we believe that these are the same person and whenever i read about the stories of the calling of apostles not just matthew peter james john included i'm always amazed by how the apostles were able to give up everything or just drop down the net like peter and john or andrew and then immediately follow jesus sometimes i wonder how they were able to do this and i am not it took me many many years of going back and forth consideration deliberation uh discernment to be able to to come up with a resolve to follow christ uh by entering the religious life took me many many years but of course the answer to this question is grace this is especially true for levi or matthew who lived a sinful lifestyle of dishonesty and exploitation of a roman tax collector only grace can motivate him to leave his lifestyle his dishonesty behind grace allows matthew and all the apostles to see what is clearly the right thing to do or a lot the grace allow them to see clearly what is the right thing to do at that moment grace also gives them the strength and courage to respond the lord's prompting with great courage and generous generosity so how may we respond promptly to the lord's calling like the apostles whether it be a great matter or just a small matter we need to pray because prayer turns our hearts to god and opens up our heart to receive the lord's gifts prayer makes us more like god and therefore god is able to transform us to be more like him so the and this of course happens when the lord deems the best moment to give us the grace but we need to prepare ourselves we need to set our hearts right so that when he decides to give us grace we will have the great blessing of receiving just that and of course being able to pray being able to be open to god is a grace in itself but we also need to do our part which is to get down our knees and pray concretely today in the first reading prophet isaiah recommends that we need to keep the sabbath holy this means not to follow our own pursuits on sabbath days but delight in the lord delight in the sabbath delight and honor the sabbath because sabbath is a day in which the lord wants to enter into a loving union with us and us with him is such a wonderful thing why would you want to follow your own pursuit then enjoy the lord's presence in other words what prophet isaiah is saying is that make sabbath a holy day dedicated to prayer and but it seems that almost 3 000 years after prophet isaiah we still haven't learned it have we thanks be to god our lord came precisely to call sinners like all of us and he is still here to strengthen us especially through the sacrament of america of of the eucharist which we will receive in a few moments so let us receive our lord with an open heart asking him to strengthen us to be able to pray more intensively especially during this lent by his grace may we emerge from this length renewed and even more ready to follow our lord we respond to his prompting with an open and joyful heart with fervent prayers brothers and sisters let us intercede for ourselves for our community and for the world for the church may all catholics experience a deep renewal and conversion this lenten season let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for civil leaders may principles of honesty fairness and transparency be always upheld let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the respect of the sanctity of human life from the conception to the natural end let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace in ukraine and may refugees be received with open arms let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the success of the annual catholic appeal may the catholics in this diocese be generous in collaboration with the diocesan charities to assist the brothers and sisters in need let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all the faithful departed for prayers written in our book of intentions for all the prayers that we hold in the depth of our hearts and for the give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful awaits the sacred paschal feasts with joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intends on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace and that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit we give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said a blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said a blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint dominic and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help make the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray oh lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and jaime our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you and their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the you your merciful help so that with their health restored they may give you thanks in the midst of the church your only begotten son took on our human nature and for our infirmities protect and strengthen also we pray nurses doctors first responders and all others on the front line of this pandemic who put themselves in harm's way to serve the needs of others through our lord jesus christ
