the Frank Corallo is a field goal and two points so far in the game he's accounted for five of the Rams 17 he'll be teeing it up to the 35 the deep men for San Francisco Amos Lawrence on the left-hand side of his screen number 20 and Bill ring in the lower right hand corner number 30 the San Francisco smarting now they're down by a touchdown and Bill Walsh having seen his team shutout as far as touchdowns against Cleveland last week and we'll see about the second half thirty he's being chased by three [Applause] [Music] always ready a brilliant return got hit several times right his way through the traffic went through the pile came up the other end the only one able to coach he had no chance whatsoever he doesn't have that kind of speed Lawrence goes all the way for the touchdown of the open click off of the second half really a fantastic run away from Joe Harris and he broke two more tackles we couldn't see the numbers Collins 42 also missed the tackle they were missed tackles all they were but he had to say that that they find young runner Lawrence did a great job of running on the play Lawrence a rookie out of North Carolina 92 yards on the kickoff and with the point after ties it at 1717 [Applause] Amos Lawrence who was traded by San Diego he was in a salary dispute but he and Fred Deane have certainly given a lot of life to the San Francisco ballclub and there you go that's Joe Harris coming in trying to hook him with the left arm and he can't do it here comes Leo our van over from the right had him and let him get away as he bumped into Kirk Collins and then it's adios Amos the obvious thing though that we didn't mention is the fact that Mike Wilson clipped on the play was a very obvious clip it was not seen by the officials though at 17-17 thanks to a 92 yard return by Amos lines ray Wersching now we'll be kicking to Dru Hill low line drive in watch it go and so they'd like to kick it out always [Music] [Applause] [Music] feels that the ball never did make it to the end zone and should be kicked over with a five-yard penalty and it's going to be a touchback first and 10 on the RAM 20-yard line [Applause] [Music] and sitting here with us his nibs the manager of the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers Tommy Lasorda how are you Tommy say hello the good folks out there hi everybody nice to see you I've got a mini banquet sorry it's a great great run back to use Vinny's expression he escaped more times than will he shut the bank robber Windell Tyler inside a block by vein 24 yard line prey kooky number 54 deck him though it'll be a second and six San Diego and another wild ballgame and this time they're out on top it's 28 21 in the second quarter there's always a lot of fireworks on that one and obviously there's a lot more in the same in this game this afternoon checking in 6 on the lam 24 right [Applause] the 54 was right there Dewayne board number 76 in Venus there's a fellow doing a good job Craig cooky two years at a Tennessee you know he was born in Deadwood South Dakota it's a good name there's no Deadwood there but he's very active and we mentioned earlier Reynolds was playing the weak linebacker position now he's playing the strong side because pukey does such a good job of covering the inside linebacker from the weak side that's across the 30 in down he goes at about the 31 and there's a flag on the play [Applause] though red Cashen will interpret the flag for us in a moment it is 1717 with 13 16 left in the third quarter what an opening act of the second half for 76 on the defense penalty is declined pushed down Wayne board is guilty of the infection it is a first down for the Rams they have at first intent on their own 31 yard line in the 1717 thriller there's Dwayne board three years out of North Carolina A&T [Applause] Treaty is flowing to Tyler in deceptive that was Eric right diving at the ball a lot of indecision back there yes and here again it's hard to tell why there's that much indecision we have to assume that there's some confusion with regard to play selection of calling the numbers but that's an assumption - you don't really know what's wrong it'll be second and 10 on the 31 the 49ers aren't hurting literally and figuratively both Lawrence pillars and Fred Dean have banged up philistine intervene with bruised ribs indeed with a brief sternum mr. aney is frustrating the ball landed at his feet [Music] Dean is standing up and pillars is now coming back so colors is gonna play but Dean is staying on the sidelines it would make a big difference I would think in the san francisco defensive beam can't play anymore especially yeah especially if the Rams decide they have to throw more than this going it doesn't already make that much difference right now because they're running so much [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Ronnie life out of USC and of course Tyler from UCLA said there's a natural rivalry and they wind up in Los Angeles in San Francisco so forth and 10:00 on the 31 and Frank Corral who does the kicking and the punting do you like to have a man go two ways like this no I don't think it's a good idea then I think if you're you have to have a punter you have to have a place I don't think it's a good situation to have one man do both of them especially so or somebody gets simply pitcher who's two player wide Hicks and Freddie Salomon a deep end to be here [Music] by Joe Harris so the first round draft pick Mel Harris Mel Owens turned him in and Joe Harris made the tackle and the 49ers will put it in play dean 17 tied with 1250 left in the third quarter all even at 17 with 1250 left in the third quarter Montana brings him up he has Paul Homer and her Cooper is running back [Applause] can fake in Montana looking over the and Cooper makes the reception and they bring him down at the 37 yard line of make up of six so it will be second and four he had to be impressed with Montana and his ability to know exactly where everybody is that was a play-action fake on the play faking to the full-back and halfback and then he winds up hitting the full-back in the middle area Earl Cooper but they don't make a lot but they move to change a little bit pick up about six yards on the play meanwhile Amos [Music] [Applause] at the 41-yard line it's very close to a first down from our angle it would appear as if he's missed it by inches but let's see where they spot the ball they're gonna measure meanwhile Dallas leading Washington ten to seven in the third quarter Miami leading the Jets 12 to 6 that's a big game Miami one in seven and three the Jets is six and for Buffalo one today though they're seven and five did you see Buffalo's winning touchdown will you talk about a prayer hoping a prayer that's exactly what that was in the last five seconds it pays to practice those kind of plays that during the course of the week Jack Reynolds over on the sidelines one of the great students of the game and of course we mentioned his 34th birthday today so they did miss the first down by inches it is third down at the yard [Music] across midfield he's got a he's got a great start and running straight ahead he's very tough he's got good leverage good body lean and he's hard to tackle one on one though they spot it closer to the RAM 46 yard line though on an inches play he bursts forth into Ram territory to make it first in town the Rams all over and he still picked up a few yards all on his own to get out of Alabama they got in the trade that sent James Owens to Tampa Bay he might be quite an investment yeah he would he'd be very he'll be very good for this team because they need somebody big and strong to go straight ahead receiver than he is a sledgehammer bad boy straight ahead more bad news that's Ronnie Lott getting his left ankle taped and he was visibly shaken up [Music] all of the day and he makes reception for a first down rhod Perry took him out the number one wide receiver in the NFL boy did he make a great move he was on the outside position slot on the inside he goes down and breaks to the outside turned the defensive back completely around the ball was right on the money and he makes his first reception of the afternoon a great play by clerk number 87 you know Joe Montana had completed 62% of his passes going into this game and he's doing better than that he's 9 for 12 and 160 yards against the team that has number one against the pass she's grabbed by Mike I think when you have a bump in run situation you got a one-on-one and the ought to take that as often as you possibly can that time Montana looked like he might have been going on a quick count and couldn't change the play at the line of scrimmage but I think any tended to have that situation you ought to throw the ball downfield with the hope and expectation and making a big I think we showed you Ronnie lot a few moments ago getting that left ankle taped he was in pain they but they expect them to return second and 11 [Music] backing off again super emotion to the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Thomas but Nolan and deflected it of course it could also might have been caught by Al Kooper in the end zone you know I'm surprised man Montana threw the ball that time yet there you see the Blitz urban coming through there Montana scampers to the outside and I'm really surprised he threw that ball that way cuz there was a lot of blue shirts and he normally will throw that ball out of bounds he threw then the traffic and dodged a bullet so to speak that they'd be lucky it wasn't intersect you Cromwell knocking it away from Pat Thomas also Jim Youngblood and anyway notice 1311 [Music] [Applause] about the 17 yard line Laroy two years out of Kansas or she had a big day handling punch the last time these two Tanna holding for Wersching and a ears for [Applause] [Music] but the Rams they went off the field leading 17 to 10 and somehow it's as if they lost the lead on their way to the locker room yeah Montana's colander colander Sylvania safer folks who watched the game I think the Rams stunned on a 92 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Amos Lawrence and a 34 yard field goal by Ray Wersching on the 49 undulating 22:17 where she now kicking [Music] as he crossed the 25 to the 27 yard line the Dru Hill brings it out to the 27 that's a 29-yard return because he started two yards deep now you look at the leaders in defense philadelphia remember they lost today then yet denver and look at San Francisco they give up points grudgingly it's amazing especially after the way they've played defensively in the past is a great change in their personality first in ten Rams [Music] ended by Stuckey and Reynolds and they'll down at 32 so he picked up five Mike Newman's had a big day and of course he'll remember today with that left hand two touchdown pass the freshman Denard it's a very effective weapon especially when he had a left-handed thrower back in the days in Kansas City and he threw that ball very well and say halftime and that flying sir Oakland 21 [Music] [Applause] number 77 he hasn't the rookie out of penn state they're running at red play with the option of running inside or outside of that block of the offensive guard and the back has to read it Becker blitzing on the play Tina Turner difference and for that reason they could not run it as efficiently as it like by the way on a third and five Fred Dean is back in the ball game here in Lawrence colors both came in beans the end on the and pillars right [Music] I'm talking about on the linebacker he has the option to go outside or inside he chose the inside course and that's the open that's the open area that middle of the San Francisco defense has been open all afternoon there it is again but he dropped the ball in the process and it falls incomplete number 52 covering on the Play Bobby Lea fool a little bitterness here in Anaheim for the moment at least the Rams however in the 49 is putting on a great show 22:17 francisco and frank corral kicks it to the right side they're capped by Freddy Salomon the ball hit ivory sully to sully will down it at about the 28 yard line and hit right in a hip pocket so my cumin dropping what would have been a cinch first down to keep it alive now San Francisco gets you back with 640 left in the third leading 20 to 17 [Applause] [Applause] [Music] at the RAM 47 a crane couldn't stay with him and he's tough to cover coming out of the backfield Cooper Montana goes back into the pocket nicely anchors sets up looking finally sees Cooper throws the ball right out in front like you have to throw it on that benefit play Cooper running down the left sideline this out runs the defensive back and picks up a first down on the play first and ten on the RAM 47 by eccrine trying to throw to cooper and overthrew him but of course it was a current putting the heat on him it made him throw it away that time the tight end Young 86 really did a good job he made a good move on the strong safety that time and looked like he would have been open but Montana did not seem and for that reason threw over the top on the right side and it goes incomplete you saw Jim young but coming back to his position he was one-on-one with Cooper and there's Charles young of course the tight end formerly played with the round young [Music] drafted by Philadelphia [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] what was this stunt that time the right tackle you'll see him watch him go to the outside number 71 and gets a good thrust goes right by the offensive tackle and gets a piece of Montana and he falls in as a sack for the Los Angeles Rams the Rams suffering an injury to lucious Smith number 23 in spins with a pinched nerve is out he usually plays a corner behind rod Perry the third and 16 and the ball now has San Francisco [Music] [Applause] one thing is very obvious with plays being sitting from the bench you see a lot more timeouts early in the game than you ever saw him before because there's so much confusion and by the signals and by the calls that are coming in from the bench [Applause] Washington is tied up with Dallas 1010 the Giants upset Philadelphia their six and six Detroit won a game on the road they beat the Bears in their six and six and of course the Rams still playing a five and six now next Sunday Pittsburgh knocked off Cleveland today we'll be playing the Rams San Francisco will be playing the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday 47 deep the sound [Music] [Applause] 17 [Applause] [Music] we may be seen in the picture when he's wide open coming across the middle he did that seem however made up his mind that he's gonna throw the ball deep down to Solomon Cromwell was in the hole like a good police safety should be he comes up with the interception the 49ers won't have an opportunity but he just threw the ball to the wrong person to flesh out your remarks on the 49er receivers Dwight Clark who came in here with 62 receptions has had just one ball for 23 yards yes and he would have he would have made a big play and of course it's not easy to see it up here then than it is down at the quarterback position but he was really open coming across the middle [Music] [Music] [Applause] a pause to juggle a ball a great illustration when you throw the ball to the banks when you must throw it about a yard out in front of the numbers so he does not break stride watch where he throws a ball here see he throws it just a little bit behind it hits him in the head bounces off takes him off stride the rhythm of the play is destroyed totally falls incomplete Williamson a ferocious hitter last week we saw him put away Calvin sweetie John Stoll [Applause] [Music] great anticipation a beautiful [Music] we anticipated jump just like a centerfielder goes after a base [Applause] anticipation of this great watching here he comes picks off the intercept makes the interception and in protest on whoa wait wait Ronnie Ronnie Lott is his sixth interception see watch again watch watery he's trying to Cruise in the open area there's a man short a man deep he makes he sees a quarterback throw the ball to rowdy [Applause] the intersection for the touchdown for Lodi has six interceptions and three of them have been for touchdown Washington miss anymore Ronnie lon remember just a few minutes ago we showed you he was an obvious pain he was getting his left ankle tape they told us he had a sprained ankle but he would play will he play 27 to 17 San Francisco they've scored 20 points in nine minutes in the third quarter kickoff return 17.0 and this interception another that's 14 points though as things quiet here for the moment let's go back to New York for an NFL record and here's Brent Musburger Bennett is not quiet down in Dallas Danny white pulls out on the double tight end formation he'll go to Doug Cosby ten yards for the touchdown Cowboys now lead the Redskins 1710 back to you in Anaheim [Music] the Dallas continues to be very difficult to beat in Dallas and meanwhile San Francisco trying to win too and as you see a study of frustration on the face of Dan Pastorini [Applause] but that will be even more [Music] Farini 27-17 San Francisco [Applause] [Music] and the rest of the Los Angeles coaching staff the Pastorini it has been a bitter bitter return tough to come back it really is you know I think realistically castorini is an excellent quarterback but I don't think he can come right back you know action after being away for two years and take over like you did before you were out of action and rusty will put it in play first and ten on the RAM 20-yard line watch Hayden [Applause] [Music] weather changes they imitated the guy who's sitting on the bench he's always been there been the guy but that's the nature the fans are you because they're selling ball with [Applause] that's why the reaction Lorraine's had the ball on their own 18 following cromwell's interception and intercept into the cut-down [Music] [Applause] [Music] not quite enough for the first down - morini turned ice-cold his last eight passes were incomplete he was all for seven and then the the interceptions like is there a bottom line for a coach when you see quarterback get cold it's an intuitive thing really it is then you have to be in a sideline to understand get a feel for what's happening and once you feel it's time to make a change you must make that change for the best interest of the head [Music] [Applause] [Music] he said we are not going to play musical chairs with our corner well I think by that he meant he wasn't going to just arbitrarily change quarterbacks this to be changing him but I think he felt any coach will feel that if the quarterback who was playing at that particular time is not doing a good job then you have to take him out and make a change and that's what he's done ketchup the first [Music] then it's still very alive [Applause] [Music] we're watching a rain [Applause] again San Francisco and read Cashion will inform us here's Denard again on that cat yes and you know we're talking to Lionel Taylor yesterday out at the practice session he talked about Denard and talked about what both PD has and responds to what the defensive back does he did a good job of breaking the pattern off at the right time on the last play and it's a big catch for the Rams we'll see the penalty for use of the hand number 65 on the defense penalty is declined first thing large pillars guilty of the infraction it's declined naturally and from the way for a first down on the san francisco 41 it is 2717 san francisco and now this thing is starting to warm up yes they get so steady get funked up [Applause] carries it out of bounds and right there with him you know what happened on that last play he tried to catch the ball with the help of his body he tried to catch it trying to cradle the ball it hit his shoulder pad that time and any time he hit the hard service surface above the shoulder and applause gatum loose and that's what happened on the last play Lorna has to be smoked over there in Oakland it's 35 to 21 San Diego in the third quarter was 28 21 at the half they're just starting to warm up north 2nd and 10 on the san francisco 41 as Haven [Applause] he's knocked out by Tina Turner there's a flag on the [Music] there again Denard was one-on-one on a bump and run situation left side with number 21 right and I think when you see that situation Vinny you got to take advantage of it he didn't mean to evidently notice it or didn't want to change the play but you have so many chances for big plays and when you get a chance you got to take advantage of it and the preliminary signal holding against Los Angeles so they had it second and ten on the San Francisco 41 and that will move it back to the RAM 49 and red Kashin will make official during the run number 26 of the offense Wendell Goodman was running grabbed ahold and he was caught second and 20 on the RAM 49 and Dean is in the game it right in [Music] [Applause] [Music] Hanson couldn't hold it as he took it away from Drew Hill and mr. Martin is a little bit hot - a year man out of San Diego State Pat Haden is flushed out of the pocket you see number 76 board that come into the inside we see the pursuit Stuckey and hot pursuit of the quarterback Pat Haden the ball was thrown into traffic and Martin looked like he was going to make the interception party was also putting the pressure on the quarterback though it is third and on the 49 one minute from the rayon [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] makes a great catch [Applause] yes everyone get away to the outside Martin never does look back for the ball at all never sees it and for that reason it goes right over the top for the completion a beautiful toe by Pat Haden and a great catch by Drew he'll good for 42 yards and its first and goal for [Applause] flagged down like rain cooky at the bar was a draw play that time and the exchange between a quarterback in the halfback was not good it wasn't as smooth as it should have been and but in spite of that he was able to get back to the line of scrimmage without fumbling the football shame [Music] the light for samples forty-niners have their back to the law that his second goal [Applause] they're gonna go to window [Music] 22 white Hicks really did a good job of stuff on the play and looked like there was a chance to get into the endzone but he came out of no place that time Hicks I'm talking about 22 and really made a great tackle wide hexa was the veteran in the secondary three years out of Michigan wound up free-agent cut by Philadelphia health food store just go pick them up in nineteen [Music] [Applause] [Applause] yes he did the first day that agreement Google it's really important that what comes out is important wins areas coming across the from the other side there you see him money for the touchdown who's been perfect [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 27 and the 5:24 [Applause] a wild-card berth in it's the same record as Atlanta Atlanta place Minnesota tomorrow night San Francisco was hoping to win today and have Atlanta lose tomorrow night in San Francisco could clinch it well you had to be impressed with that drive that time and again it's very obvious last week to Pat Hayden came into the game he was very smooth and lift with his presence of course the game was over when he got into the game so you had to consider that but that same thing happened here there was a spark that there was a flash when he came out of the game he executed extremely well and it looks like they perform a lot more efficiently and justifiably so he's been around here for a long time knows the system knows what has to be done and he's doing everything with with a lot more precision then pastoring he did during the time he was in the game and that's understandable because again he hasn't been with the club that long Laurence Pilar's who's playing with bruised ribs no doubt having trouble breathing the big guy is playing however and Walt Arnold who caught his second touchdown pass all alone great deception by Pat Haden 27:24 San Francisco with 2 minutes and 4 seconds left in the third quarter and Frank Corral prepares to tee it up at the 35 the repeat the 49ers have not beaten the Rams twice in a year since 1965 they've beaten them already 22 17 and they lead them 27 24 this games a long way from being over there's gonna be a lot of fireworks before this thing in pick off [Applause] and that's a kid named but Bob Cobb he is a human interest story a kid who is a victim of cocaine when he was in Arizona and he has been rehabilitated and it's hice to put the spotlight on him for the moment he has beaten his problem and he's playing and he made the tackle next weekend NCAA basketball Georgia San Francisco right here four o'clock Eastern Time 1 o'clock Pacific first in 10 there's Bob Cobb he's a big kid [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's like pushing [Music] [Applause] there whose delayed in position a stops the ball is thrown Thomas comes in with a left hand but you can't tell where the right hand was it might be that he pushed with the right hand and that's why they call pass interference on the play the car Larkin has an interception nullified that insult to the injury [Music] [Music] the 34 yard line before hecarim can bring him down now one thing is very important and that is to be unpredictable as far as your place selection is concerned bill walsh calls a place from the sideline he is not a predictable play caller he keeps you off-balance with the run in the past and there was a great illustration of it I think that were kind of anticipating the throw they ran inside and now a second entry San Francisco 34 yard line [Applause] [Music] the 36 he got away from Mike Fanning and Jack Youngblood they had him for five yard laws yes he was very lucky not to lose yardage on the play he stretched the loss into a game by coming inside and trying to get as much out of the play as he possibly could [Applause] so it's third and one the ball is out on the san francisco 36 yard line what kind of a latitude is Montana have once the play is called by wall he'll stay with a play unless he fails at the [Music] [Applause] 39 Oh play-action fake yeah there's it there's another illustration you say of being unpredictable they fake inside they sent Solomon in motion across the back field he's out by himself one-on-one and he's finally tackled by Cromwell but they put a lot of pressure on the defense he fights his way through traffic coming across from the left side of the field to the right side and it's a big play for the San Francisco 49ers they pick up 25 yards on the play so it's first in town [Music] [Music] well that'll make it maybe a loss of a yard or so and we are and that officially is the end of the third quarter with the score San Francisco 27 the Los Angeles Rams 24 we'll be back with the start of the fourth quarter after this word from your local station and the smoke has chance to clear CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by Toyota who invite you to see all the 1982 Toyota cars and trucks at your local dealer all what a feeling to drive a Toyota and buy löwenbräu when it's time for the taste of a truly great beer let it be löwenbräu as we start the fourth quarter San Francisco 27 the Rams 24 and the 49ers have it second and 11 on the ramp [Music] [Music] for touchdown [Music] [Applause] we couldn't tell whether the factor trying to intentionally knock it out of there whether he just lost a ball let's take a look here with protection Montanez the ball here you see hope for making the catch yeah it was knocked out to come from the backside a beautiful play by urban number 47 punched it right out of there really a good accurate shot on Hofer oh the Rams have a chance coming back [Applause] 24 that's the first time in five beam five consecutive games with the 49 you'll say the penalty for it [Music] Tyler he seemed a trip and that broke the momentum of the play as he tried to build it here again they keep running that play especially on first down it's an option play it's a trap with the rights regard or right tackle trapping on the play and the runner has the option of going inside or outside of that that block it was a little indecision on the play and that's why he was on the play just about the same distance second and 10 from the 11 yard line [Music] Miami leading the Jets 12 to 9 and of course the big story there what about Richard Todd did he play at all or didn't he and if not the man who replaced him will be playing his first NFL game we'll keep tabs on that one for you Dallas continues to hold on they broke the 1010 tide Alec waiting 17 to 10 in the fourth quarter and of course they're not accustomed to losing in hell there are the numbers so far you can see the difference in Washington [Applause] a trap to look like the middle was open and sometimes you know that's going to work and sometimes it isn't but you slow down on the rush in the process of calling that kind of a play even though they won't succeed in making the necessary yardage and there's really very little risk on that kind of a call by the way we get a footnote to that Jets game we told you the big question what about Richard Todd and the word is despite having a fractured rib Richard Todd has played the entire game meanwhile Fred Dean shaken up being slowly getting up he's been banged up remember last week he bruised his sternum at in the middle of the chest however he played today was heard earlier but he's been right back on the field until this very moment so Frank Corral will be punting blade Hicks and Freddy Solomon twin safeties at the San Francisco 40 and Carla Curran is the blocking fullback trying to keep people away from Tyrell one thing is very important here not let the ball bounce they have to sit before the Kirk edge and make sure they have good - 40 and that's where San Francisco will put it in play so we have 13 minutes and 42 seconds left in the ballgame there's a flag on that punt let's wait for the interpretation again from red Kashian there is no file it'll be picked off first of ten okay read anything you say with 13 42 left in the game time out on the field San Francisco 27 the Los Angeles Rams 24 and the 49ers have the ball first and ten on their own 41 13 42 left in the game first in 10 San Francisco on their own 41 yard line go first and he gets up to about the 45 yard line Jim Youngblood brought him down you don't hang in watching bill wall send in plays everything else in football is practice do they practice a coach let's say during the week sending in plays yeah they send in the players exactly the same way as they do as during the course of the game to make sure their efficiency is the same of course sometimes you call plays I call the play one time we had a gather near both Dickenson and I call the 52 pop G oh he's a boy that burns my back and I said what he said a fire about that second six on the 40 but George Andrews pulls him down from behind at the 47 yard line Andrews a three-year man out of Nebraska though he'll be coming out now Joe Harris and Leroy Irvin coming in a nekron and Andrews come out on a third and four with the ball almost on the san francisco 47 you can see Montana's numbers you know I watch Clark and he reminds me so much of the river scene history some kind of city miss Murphy Gordon for in the 47 [Applause] blooping it what [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and without a glove boy what a sensational catch and of course a good release there you see urban blitzing on the play 47 he knew exactly there's this another illustration of being aware he delivered the ball right out in front Cofer made a beautiful sensational catch in a big play for the 49ers ball hoper flare six years out of Mississippi he has done some great work for the 49ers since they drafted him in 76 [Music] [Applause] a late hit charged against Johnny Johnson we will see Johnson blissing on the play [Applause] with the official state [Applause] it looked like it was hard for him to stop his progress and look at Rey malov Asia he's not going to talk to it roughing the passer charge against Johnny Johnson you be the judge here we see it here again but you don't you can't tell the official say the Johnson is between the quarterback and the efficient we don't see really what took place with as far as he was leaping for the quarterback but he calls it on the RAM 30-yard line we ever seen him since early in the first half eight a minute and Johnny Johnson has drawn some more flags that time it was Schumann number 84 and Johnson getting into a tussle Johnny Johnson first called facemask number 20 on a deep bass so roughing the passer follow Johnson who is beside himself the number one draft choice in 1980 from Texas and down on the field Randy cross number 51 the UCLA man well this is really moving the ball it started on the san francisco 41 and now they have the ball on the well those kind of mistakes really hurt you one thing for the offense to move the ball because they do a good job efficiently there's another thing to give them that kind of yardage in a critical situation though San Francisco leading the Rams 27 24 11:35 Levin we'll see Johnny Johnson it looks like he's gonna leave his feet almost now that's a real tough call yes it really is the only thing that you have to wonder about the official is right there on the scene it's a judgement call and he obviously thought it was a late hit first and 10 on the ramp and the land that came up at about the 14 yard line Jim Youngblood for the bear hug on him [Applause] Randee cross you saw him down on the field earlier in pain twisted his back and it is questionable it is doubtful that he'll be back in the game Randy cross second and nine on the RAM 14 27:24 San Francisco that Buffett running takes a shot from Joey [Applause] [Music] Leroy Irvin made it official a troika [Music] so he loses a yard on that play that makes a third and ten at the 15-member they at first intent of course way Wersching has been perfect and he is standing in the tall weeds just ready to be called in you know I can't understand why they don't throw the ball outside to Clark he's got Rob Perry five to six for Barry is five nine there one to one in the bump and run situation it was [Applause] [Music] the ball was thrown a little bit too short a little bit longer it had been six points watching say he runs right by Perry and again there's a big difference in size six four or five nine but the ball is thrown behind instead of in front and that's the reason the ball was deflected by rod Perry and of course the crowd here in Anaheim is somewhat relieved even if Wersching kicks it then the San Francisco lead will only be six points which means a touchdown in point and they can be passed instead of but washing with Joe Montana holding at the 22 do you like a porter Baxter hold yes if he's the best holder he has to be the guy that holds of all we had Dawson holding for us but I think you have the best what they do that's why they do it here I'm sure though with Montana holding washing kicks it through San Francisco leading by six San Francisco 30 in the Rams 20 for the 49ers picked up 30 yards in penalties against the Rams Johnny Johnson now drew Hill trying to break one and washing [Music] the 30 a certain kick by washing it looked like a gyroscope that had gone crazy yeah it looked like one of those super balls you know that when write-down looked like it was a frozen rope kick got down there very quickly and normally that kind of a kick you ought to be able returned for good yardage because he gets down her so quickly but there's a fumble on the play and he barely breaks it back to the ten bill ring was originally a free agent cut by Pittsburgh and San Francisco pick him up bring one year out of BYU made a big play for the RAM [Applause] and the big man is knocked out by small Williamson at the 16 yard line so they picked up six it'll be second and four in the talkative to Taylor again you know yesterday at practice he talked about Denard and talked about his great stamina says that he has great capacity to be as efficient in the fourth quarter as he is at the first quarter because he's in such excellent condition though his second and four on the RAM 69 54 left so he got a lot of time for a lot of football [Music] [Applause] hard hit by Jack Reynolds at the 20-yard line Reynolds Russian down and decided to get the feeling of the football there's a little comparison with Pastorini 8 for 1879 yard to touchdown and a killer interception 8 and 5 for 877 yards and a touchdown of course the difference is that the time of the game and the complexion of the game when you start comparing them yes that's right it's always a very difficult thing to do although and I hate to belabor the point but again I think pastor Rick I have Pat Haden being with the club for such an extended period of time knows the system so much better than Pastorini which is obvious and it makes a difference in the way they function and I think he's a little bit more sure of what he's calling and where people are going to be because of the long relationship he's had with the receivers in the banks we told you that Jack Reynolds laid a tough hit on Wendell Tyler and he was bow-legged as Tyler came off the field so Ronald really drilled him Cullen Bryant is in emotion and hate [Applause] down he goes hit by Ron got it out to the 30 he needs less than a yard for a first down here we see Patrick going back in the pocket good protection he has to be cared very careful that two linemen do not get too much permit the defensive people who get too much depth I he did he his slides in the inside and slides in a second base there for the close to the first half he was trying to get away from Reynolds and he took a punishing helmet right into the head by Ron a lot second and one on right grabbin at the 37-yard line and the big guy still won't go down and it's a first down okay Goodman should have been stopped in the backfield that time it certainly shouldn't have been any kind of a game game but he jumped to the outside ran right through two defensive people watched the missed tackles three defensive people and was determined to make the first down was finally tackled by number 22 Dwight Hicks but it was a super effort on the part of boomin though they're spotted at the 37 where it's first in ten Loran starting on their own can have [Applause] [Music] and he's grabbed by jet they have them like a birthday present that's just what he's celebrating today and brought him down as he came back Denard's fourth catch of the day but there's hacksaw people just take that kind of a play for granite but that was a great play by Reynolds number 64 and here we see Miami 15 to 9 over Jetts in the fourth quarter only a minute in 12 seconds left in that game go second and eight on the 39 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] but there's a flag [Music] [Applause] that's a really tough call because he got rid of the ball quickly throwing the ball to the back have to hold on that play but there was holding up part of the Los Angeles Rams Nepal the ball would be called back and a penalty assessed against the ring the Tyler had it to the San Francisco 30 series number 60 on the offense that's a bitter call that's a tough time to get your name called out we are watching here we see Tara number 60 or you see the arm lock we've got a wide stance and tries to get to of with when was over the other he had pillars coming on the inside Lord so he tried to hold them both out they got caught second and 18 on the RAM 29 [Music] Stucky at the 30-yard line [Applause] the ramps have to somehow get the ball in little area every time they thrown the ball in the middle it's been a big play a couple have been called back one has been dropped but that's where you have to throw the ball against the San Francisco 49ers at where they're covering they're not too concerned about the tight end of course he isn't a game now because they're playing with three wide receivers but they're very concerned about not giving the paper to the outside people and for that reason the inside area is very vulnerable third reason 6:17 welcome again [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there's a good job good pass protection he jumps up into the pocket knows where the line of scrimmage is delivers the ball there you see it right on the money triple coverage yes a lot of folks there once he decided to throw the ball inside but he made the catch and that's what happens if he didn't roll the ball in the middle then you have to throw it at the numbers below the shoulder pads a short above there you're in trouble Aidan is seven for ten a hundred and one [Applause] [Music] after about a two or three yard game [Applause] 518 San Francisco is doing a good job of concealing their coverages it looks like sometimes they're going to be on bumped and bump and run on the outside meaning that the ette the quarter people are right on top of their receivers and then all of a sudden just a few men come over and have double coverage and so it's a hard thing for a quarterback to read and he has to do a good job of calling the right play against the particular defense that he sees Tyler in his rush for 94 yards so far today they're gonna go to guman with hera blocking for and doom [Music] and has dropped at the 44 Ronnie Loren's fillers and slatton march brought him down well it was a big third and seventeen when Hayden connected with Denard now he has a top third and four the ball is on the San Francisco 44 he tries to keep this drive alive remember he's got played this he's going to take two downs here the two down to make four yards [Music] [Applause] that's what he has to be pink [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's the spot even the malaria that time again watch it and you see the opening in the middle there you see tight I don't know how he caught the ball either it was low and out in front but he made the catch and that's the only thing that's really important the Tyler has carried for 94 yards and he has also fought for 439 3:36 left 24 San Francisco the hunt for the TV [Applause] defended by Eric well you couldn't tell who that was thrown to whether the tight-end Arnold or Denard coming across it was a progression pattern and by that I mean you have one man short you have one man of old deeper and another one way deep and he was trying to throw the ball to Denard it looked like but it did look like Denard realized that the ball was for him we get a big bulletin Richard Todd has just on a 12 yard touchdown pass to Jerome Barkin and the Jets are leading Miami 16 to 15 with steam second to the fourth [Applause] 37 [Music] get the ball outside to outside receivers he's changing the play let's see what he does it is [Music] [Applause] there's a flag on the play hill time to make that one hand catch that we softball Hofer make he couldn't do it but there's a flag and it's going to be offsides against San Francisco I believe and boy on the right side did you see how open wide he was he went to the inside broke outside the head his defensive bag licked but he went to the left side and it would have been a sensational catch had he been able to make the reception it'll be second and five you take another look at that great attempt by Drew Hill so second and five Hank on the 32 with 3:13 left six point separating yeah he's a lot of time you have to do what they give you take what they give you it has to be patient but 313 in the game is a long time [Applause] five on the 32 body sealed off at the pass by guess who's the birthday boy Jack Reynolds well he is something he is really something I'm talking about Reynolds now a question Hank as we look at this play in baseball have you trade a player why you then have to perhaps change his sign she's too well aware of the workings of your club he's out apply in football no I really don't think it does it they're so involved in concentrating on what their keys are what they have to get done what particular aspect of it is not that really important the 31-yard line Hayden faced with another tough call [Applause] [Music] get it Fowler stacked up he has to the 27 he mighta gained the yard if they give him the fall to progress and that's all he was met head-on and among others you can't say enough for Lawrence killers number 65 well you know he's playing with bruised ribs we know that Pilar's was shaken up but he's back in there and of course so is fred dean another man who's been banged up those two hurting and no doubt painful chest injuries having tough time just breathing well you know this time of the season there's a lot of players in a leg who are playing with a lot of hurts especially when they're still involved in a race and have a chance to get that big ring so it is fourth and three and Pat Haden puddling now you know an interesting note the entire 49er team has rushed for 63 yards and we're talking about five running backs Wendell Tyler alone has rushed for 96 yards but as they say on Broadway how'd you come out then it's 30 to 20 for San Francisco just look at the scoreboard that's the only thing that really matters and a big win for the New York Jets we understand a final score the Jets beat Miami 16 to 15 odd tonight one of the he's ever made MARY POPPINS and of course they start with up-to-the-minute 60 minutes oh what an evening here on CBS tonight pull up a chair and plan to spend the evening I know I will 60 minutes and then Mary Poppins supercalifragilisticexpialidocious all over again [Applause] two minutes and 16 seconds left called a timeout have they left the 16 symptoms rundown they would have had a free one well now this where they get an extra one at the two minute mark decision okay fourth and three in the 30 look at the light outside they have Gilbert it tied in on the right side in [Applause] [Music] [Applause] first down [Applause] minute mark right so there was a good time out that really was because now they have to regroup over the two minutes left in the contest and he delivers a ball beautifully to Mike Duman for the first down so the San Francisco 16 and this thing is really winding down it is 30 24 San Fran 21 seconds to play in Shea Stadium Richard Todd pulls out he's got Jerome Barca he's tied and the extra point is good and the Jets come from behind to beat Miami 16 to 15 and let's go back to Vince Kelly in Anaheim we got that kind of a moment building here the Rams trailing by six have the ball first intent on the San Francisco 16 yard line and while it's calm remember San Francisco had it first intent on the rim [Music] I think us the a-team with the Jets winning seven first and ten from the sixteen [Music] [Applause] back Willie Harper was [Applause] the infraction [Applause] [Music] inadvertently got a piece of the tight end in force in defense this car the ball is now in a one yard line Arnold evidently shaken up but okay [Music] with a minute and 54 seconds have a first and goal on the one-yard line Pat Hayden has come to the sideline he wants to talk to Lionel Taylor while ray mallove AC talks to a couple of tight ends battle and Gilbert and I'm a love AC talking to his quarterback a wonderful game in this great rivalry the Rams and won most of the meetings two-twenty but the 49ers coming on strong the Rams haven't lost here at home since 1976 the Sanford they down by six but now they have it first and goal at the one you know you have to get Pat hate a lot of credit to be able to come into a game like this and take take charge and make something happen it's exactly what he's done sometimes a quarterback when he's been benched such a human pouch and feel sorry for himself and then he winds up for the bad attitude that that's not the case with him but both past Iranian Hayden are good friends and with more pulling for each other the good and Hayden has certainly done a remarkable job here this afternoon well let's see what does he have to work with he has his running backs Mike guman and Wendell Tyler you know let's see there should be an interesting formation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] bill Bain is on the left side [Music] on the right side [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] - women [Applause] they pump it right in there for the touchdown though it's 30 30 fifty-one Tyla following the board right there taking on Fred Dean meanwhile Tyler exploding through [Applause] especially the way they steam function in the two-minute offense [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and 51 seconds left the RAM tenure undismayed by the they still went back to work and punch here you see Pat Haden handing off to Wendell Tyler from a cockeyed position you see leading the play there's a good scene playing out in front gets a piece of the defensive end [Applause] and they go in for the touchdown it puts them ahead after they kicked the extra point 31 and 30 with 151 left in this contest and there's still a lot of time with 151 left I should say there is especially with such talent just go die [Applause] as he finally gets a rammed out in front San Francisco has two timeouts in Iran have one Amos Lawrence and Bill ring are standing on the goal line the member Lawrence both the kickoff starting the second half 92 yards foot touchdown if you're not careful you really have to do a good job of covering this kick sometimes you're so joyous happy that you went ahead that you relax a little bit on the covers big trouble with good field position on the on the part of the opposition they have to do a good job of covering this game will see Corral now right next to Corral is the rookie melon and on the other side [Music] [Applause] in touch the ball will be down by he'll return 51 left San Francisco will put it in play first intent on the 20 and I still don't know how Corral kicks it that way well he tries to kick a little higher on the football right above the middle to make sure it doesn't get up in the air and wants him to try to feel the ball rolling on the ground a very effective way to do it he had a lot of stuff on the ball that time the air like a gyroscope with the nose down Wendell Tyler resting now he's had his big moment Frank Corral can rest for the moment managed up the sandwich [Applause] Coulter and Cooper are the running back in Montana gone upstairs got away from Youngblood gross - Charlie yarn and he stacked up by rod fairy-cakes an out of bounds at the 24-yard line so they pick up four and it's second and six as you can see a minute and 43 left the Rams are going to play very strong on the outside and probably give if anything they're gonna do anything efficiently we're gonna have to throw the ball to the tight one of the backs because of the way the look a thing on Bill Walsh if a second and chefs on no sir mark is on the left side going over the middle but they throw instead to Cooper and Jin Young Blood Dragon [Music] at the 28 yard line and he needs to get to the 30 for the first down what's the strategy here Hank go for just position for a field goal yes I think so I think they're going to try to be very careful not to make the mistake not to cough up the football not to throw an interception they have enough time they just move the ball down the field all they need is a field goal and that's the way they're gonna play it unless they get some kind of a blitz and we'll have a chance to go for the big bright but the way they're playing it they're gonna be content to travel slowly and move the ball and move [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we got the first down 'we had parent Harris pumped in behind the line of scrimmage and hope it bounced off him to pick up the first down 123 [Applause] finally and across the 40 they're going to give him a couple more to stop the talk at about the 43 yard line that's about a half a yard shy of a first down with nine seconds left Montana has taken a couple of big bites yeah you know I'm surprised that the Rams do not play tough double coverage on the outside to make them throw the ball inside so they can't stop the clock without using a timeout that's what's happened on the last two plays did they haven't had the user timeouts if you make him toe inside they would have to use a pan [Applause] [Music] the game [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] fingertip captain couldn't quite do it well it'll be third and one on the 42 rocks topping with a minute and six seconds left to repeat Rams 31 San Francisco 30 well the 49ers really do a good job of spraying the ball around giving just getting it to different people in a position kind of a play where they have to catch the ball maybe for a five or six yard gain and in Rome we have to do a run well with this offense and all these people do a good job of that all right third and on the san francisco 42 montana looking for more than one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] down 1/4 pound when he had it second in one I'm surprised at that pattern that was unusual and they own he had looked like he only had one man out on the play trying to get the ball deep downfield when he only needed a yard you would think maybe that he would tried to get the ball to one of the backs or somebody in close enough just to get the first down on the play and remember the 49ers have had season long difficulties moving the ball on the ground their average of three yards per carry is the lowest in the NFL one reason why they throw in the ball second in one the best thing they do is sort of all I'm sure the Minnesota hero [Applause] [Music] sighing she cookie with a minute left [Applause] Canada Hawker [Applause] it will now be a measurement there's the time left 55 seconds it looked like Hofer had carried across the area needed to pick up the first down it always depends on where these possible yeah that's exactly right and of course hopefully is such a dependable steady guy somehow someway he's going to make something happen and make the yardage the middle was was open it's gonna be close yeah from up here and of course our angle is at a severe angle the field looks like yeah I think so too but they're gonna measure yeah that's all-important with 55 seconds left the big measurement the 49ers field and made it that didn't mean anything until a zebras do [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Ray Wersching who might be called on [Applause] in America [Music] [Applause] [Music] a timeout by sandwiches stopping the clock with 42 seconds left good thing on the part of the Rams they made him throw the ball inside and so they can they would make them use that timeout and that's what happened on the last part so it'll be a second and six now remember the Giants beat Philadelphia today what a shocking upset 22 10 and next week Pittsburgh who took care of Cleveland will meet the Rams and the Giants will go against San Francisco at San Francisco the prospects indeed of an exciting NFL doubleheader next Sunday on CBS for Bill Walsh and Joe Montana lively talking things around you know in his sophomore year at Notre Dame Notre Dame trail 30 to 10 in the fourth quarter against the air force and Montana turned it around and they won a 31 to 32 jr. he was down 24 to 14 to Purdue and pulled it out 17 to 7 against Clemson and pulled it out in his senior year he beat hit in the fourth quarter wiped out a 21 to 6 deficit against Southern Cal only to lose on a late field goal and in his college finale in the Cotton Bowl he was down 34 12 with 10 minutes left and he'd used 3534 so you thought about comeback Joe Montana can do it second and six Montana [Applause] for Cooper thirty-eight seconds left one timeout left for both teams San Francisco of course with a ball that's very important they've got one left and the guy cut it try to save that for the field goal attempt hey Hank coaching on the sidelines is it tear you up to pieces at this kind of a game where you're so busy I can see malov AZ it's tearing him up yeah you really get involved you're calling plays you're concerned about defenses you concern about a lot of things and you're the contest no question about that 36 on the San Francisco 48 with another big play flag on the play and the pastor Drake product he's of authority to the 35 yard line there was movement up front Mike Fanning moved however whether he was drawn off or not remains to be seen there are two flags down Mike Fanning was the man moving and of course for Ray Wersching the ball is down at the way in Foley they will pick up the flag offside offside number 79 play [Applause] first down go Fanning was guilty they ignored of course washing waiting what a tough time long distance kicker first in 10 on the RAM 35 yard-line 30 seconds left in the game 31 30 ran [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now they are very [Applause] at that time the defensive back was playing outside like even going to have an option to go either in or out he chose the outside forest a bar was right on the money and another big play for the San Francisco 49ers with 23 seconds left in one timeouts and first intent on the RAM 20-yard line coming in off the bench is Eason Ramson we haven't seen much of him today normally a tight end but he brought in a play and Charlie on in Dwight Clark young started to leave then Clark started to lead but Mark had better get off before we have too many men on the field first and ten from the point [Applause] [Music] [Applause] as the fast goes out-of-bounds Nolan Cromwell doing a great job along with a high every Sully to down Joe Montana you know that time they try to get a mismatch Charlie young who was 64 on the Rob Perry who was five nine they try to throw it to him in the end zone didn't have enough time to do so but I'm surprised that they wouldn't use Clark in that situation rather than young because Clark has more quickness and speed 19 seconds left in the game and it looks like we're getting closer and closer to Ray Washington 90 man out of cow is 48 so he's well within his range second and ten and he's going to stay on the ground of Cooper he runs into Jen Youngblood Youngblood dropped him although big poopy did quite Youngblood off and get it down to about the nineteen and load of the clock running down a moment and in a ring Wersching bell with four seconds three seconds two [Music] [Applause] mr. washing will tell you men old toughness kickers have to have that they don't get nearly the credit that they deserve four to six games a year here at a situation right now where the whole thing hinges on whether they make a kick or whether they miss it you talk about again mental toughness they have it our thanks indeed to executive producer Terry O'Neill to our senior producer Charles Milton the third to our producer Mike Burks and our director Tony Verner yazzie Lange for his information coming in on the right side to Dennis monition for his fighting here in the booth but dr. Bob woods in his statistical help throughout this most exciting afternoon and particularly by thanks to the entire crew for giving us a marvelous telecast of a great game 3130 land ray Wersching born in Austria 511 210 founded 31 years old nine years at a cow he's a CPA and he's in charge with the most important point to the game he was originally a free agent by Atlanta in 71 he went to San Diego 1973 he came to San Francisco in 1977 and the spotlight is on in [Applause] the whole will be at the 27-yard 37 yards [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well what this means is if Atlanta should lose tomorrow night San Francisco has won this lesson they've been in they've been an incredible team all year long so such an opportunistic team they get an interception for a touchdown to get a kickoff return for a touchdown they make things happen and that's how they've won the Rey washing is the hero San Francisco Beach the Rams 33 to 31 now for Hank Stram this is Vin Scully saying so long from Anaheim Stadium once again the final score San Francisco 33 Rams 31 be sure to be with his Thanksgiving Day the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Chicago Bears beginning with the NFL today at 3:30 Eastern 2:30 central 12:30 Pacific and on Saturday CBS Sports presents a season premiere NCAA basketball this week the Georgia Bulldogs visit San Francisco to take on the dime see it's Saturday beginning at 4:00 Eastern 1 Pacific afternoon and you've been watching CBS Sports coverage of the end Bell [Applause] you
