tied with Cincinnati for first place in the AFC Central familiar figures Terry Bradshaw 12 years out of Louisiana Tech and Franco Harris 10 years out of 10 state here busting 1 for 35 yards against the Houston Oilers and if Bradshaw goes to the air it will not be to Lynn Swann but it most certainly will be to young Jim Smith on the ground Houston stymied by another Steel Curtain and so that's it the kids from San Francisco and the veterans from Pittsburgh coming up the middle 60s and the leaves on the trees are rusted and cold brown and yellow Paul is here hi everybody I'm Vin Scully along with Hank Stram Hank we all know that the 49ers have won five straight the Steelers once a great team seemed to have browsed themselves against Houston Monday night is there any other discernible difference between the two clubs penny I think to use the boxing vernacular I think that the San Francisco 49ers are a boxing kind of a team the Pittsburgh Steelers are the sluggers the knocked out team you talked about the infighting will come from Frank Pollard and Franco Harris the homerun threats the knockout shots will come from Brett Shaw to Stallworth or Smith on the other hand it'll be a finesse kind of an offense ball control passing by the San Francisco 49ers I think we're going to be in for a treat this afternoon we're going to t see two outstanding football teams here in Pittsburgh [Music] well as you look at Chuck Noll you can also understand that the San Francisco 49ers lost the toss and so ray Wersching will tee it up at the 35 yard line and deep will be Larry Anderson number 30 and Greg Hawthorn number 27 for Pittsburgh we're just about ready to get it underway in a magnificent day and the Steelers virtually impossible to beat at home that'll be the challenge Greg Hawthorn fumbling and picks it up at the 1 surrounded at about the aid and down he goes at the 10 yard line east and Ramson number 80 the first man down and so we'll get this one underway now as the steel is in poor field position will put it in play against San Francisco here's the way the Steelers stack up with Terry Bradshaw his running backs are Politan Harris and his wide receivers Stallworth and Smith Lynn Swann is out with a full hamstring the tight end is Benny Cunningham with Kenny wolf Lee Webster Brown up front [Applause] at the 10-yard line and he'll stay on the ground and Franco Harris finds daylight after the 25-yard line Dwight Hicks made the tackle and immediately Pittsburgh establishes itself with a first down in the first running play I think if this game goes along then I think we'll find that the team that runs the better of the two will probably do the best job here this afternoon and that was a great start there you see the linebackers Harper buns Reynolds Turner lot right Hickson Williamson the secondary the Bradshaw Franco Harris wide right and John Stallworth left he goes to store worth they take some lick immediately and he goes out of bounds at about the 31 yard line Eric right knocking him out Stallworth has caught a pass now in 55 consecutive games that's a pittsburgh club record you know then the defensive secondary of the San Francisco 49ers normally play very loose and I think we're going to see Pittsburgh changed their personality and throw in front a little bit more than they usually do and also throw in the back remedy second and three Stealer 33 and it'll be the second man Collard hit by archie reese and Dwayne board board number 76 is the man that got away he was originally drafted by Pittsburgh you know though that was a counter play then that time where they faked Franco Harris to the right side and gave it back to Pollard on the left side but the defense in the 49ers pretty well - that would be third and one on the 35 yard line of Pittsburgh Randy outside Cunningham and they go to Harris going wide outside and he is brought down as he tried to get around on the outside milk McCall knocking him down at about the thirty six seven yard line and they picked up the first down so Franco Harris who needed a hundred and sixty-two yards to become the third player to rush for ten thousand you know he has had seven one thousand yard year he's been an unbelievable back and I think he started the season a little slow we saw him early in the season he didn't look like he really had his legs under him as well as he has the last couple of times we've seen him he's doing a superb job at this stage of the season first and ten on the steal a 38 yard setting up goes to the right side to Cunningham it was hidden dropped Willie Harper hit him at about the 42 yard line so they picked up four it would be second in six I think we'll see Pittsburgh throw a lot more than they usually do they'll throw to their tight end they'll also throw to the backs coming out of the backfield because the basic structure of the San Francisco 49ers as well whereby they play a zone a lot and there's a lot of soft spots in that zone and you know Terry Bradshaw has thrown only six interceptions this year that's the second lowest average in the AFC Kenny Anderson leads him on the 42 yard [Music] Harris and Harris still on his feet in goes down at the 30 as bun got him and that should be just about enough for another first down we had him spread out all over the field that time and through a screen pass to Franco Harris who you see Bradshaw setting up nicely thrown the ball to Franco Harris who does a good job of running he knew exactly where he had to go for the first down and got the yardage Williamson number 27 had a shot but missed though they started on the pittsburgh 10-yard line and very easily have moved 40 yards to midfield and Bradshaw on a pursuit came with stallworth going left [Music] the right side both packs release and he's picked up and dragged down at the last second by Fred Dean number 74 and of course Dean a remarkable player with seven and a half sacks and three games for San Francisco I then could match up between ray penny the offensive left tackle 74 in Fred Dean 74 when Dean is in the ballgame on obvious passing situations will be an interesting matchup to watch here this afternoon though on the san francisco 47 yard line at second and seven [Music] this all shot back [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] though the stealer is a little disjointed on the previous play Cunningham lined up on the left when he should have been on the right and that time Collard was not sure from a wing whether he should go back to a pro set yes interestingly enough they had almost slot formation two receivers only two on the left and they had San Francisco in a situation where really they didn't know what was happening and instead of taking advantage of the situation they waited too long and they the ball was snapped you know this is something that happens to you then when you're a definitely strong sledgehammer team and then you try to change your personality although that it's hard to do that it looks like Pittsburgh is having a little difficulty at this time I would in the world who they want to change their personality well I think they want to take such a discussion the flag will be picked up there will be no penalty and it will be third down for example Pittsburgh license throw the ball deep downfield the way the defense is they cannot do that early in a game so they have to go to a short passing game have to exercise very very good patience and push berg is not a patient sixteen yards now on the mine Bradshaw deep down the left side no good intended for Jim Smith with four white shirts all around him so they were looking for steady and he was the primary receiver we all have a tendency to do what we do best even though the planning is such where you want to travel Reynolds he was an excellent middle linebacker but now he's playing a middle linebacker in a 3-4 he has some extra help inside and for that reason he'll be even more effective with a 3-4 defense Franco Harris straight ahead bullying his way at the top is buns and at the bottom is Reynold as the two linebackers bringing big Franco down I think as a general rule of thumb I think any time you play a team like the 49ers the best thing they do is go sideways east and west and I think the best thing to do against them is to go right at the defense I think Pittsburgh is strong enough to do that they're gonna get stopped on some occasions but basically they have to stick it right at the 49ers and I think that'll be their best way of holding the football on the ground era so far has carried for 26 yards though it is third and three the ball on the san francisco 42 yard line in motion is Randy Grossman and they go to Harris and goes the other and it would appear as if he slithered for the first down he's amazing he runs with such good control that time he looked like he was going to get stuffed at the line of scrimmage but you can't run like that unless you have very very good vision you run with your head up on your eyes open he runs that way and for that reason he was able to pick up the next necessary yardage for the first down you know Franco Harris has played 11 consecutive games without rushing for a hundred yards of more that's the longest such streak of his career so he's hungry and we'll watch his yardage today first and ten on the san francisco 38 yard line picking up the first down for six years Randy cause has slugged it upfront for San Francisco what's the club's character the San Francisco 49ers of 1981 are a mixture of young enthusiasm and a lot of older players that can still remember the years when things didn't go quite as well and we're far from overconfident team even though we are six and two and we go week to week and we're looking forward to finding the x world champion Steelers here in Pittsburgh first and ten on the 35 yard line of San Francisco Montana over the middle and he's got Dwight Clark again and he gets all the way to the 44 yard line before the Steelers swarming down bill Walsh has a very well-conceived offensive scheme and personality they don't care who they play they are not going to deviate from their plan they're a passing possession kind of a finesse kind of a passing team there you see Clark coming across he anchors between the linebackers not very deep but he makes the catch runs for another seven or eight yards and that's what they did they nickel and dime you today but Dwight Clark he came into this game having caught 42 passes and Solomon with 37 it's left and Salomon is right on a second one they go straight ahead with Errol Cooper and I believe Cooper picked up the first down as he fell across the 45 yard line [Music] San Francisco acquired the services of Johnny Davis from Tampa he's big and he's strong and he's a great inside runner he's not able to play today but he complements Cooper who runs very well outside not as well inside they'll miss Davis on the short yardage situation stuff this afternoon you can look at the NFC leaders with brown up top foot bar coming right after [Music] first in town [Music] no score in the first quarter Ricky Packer gets out to about 250 cat made the tackle and there's a flag [Music] you know San Francisco will play with two receivers in the backfield they'll take the running backs out put two receivers in the backfield and make it would have been a big play Cooper incidentally hasn't run that that impressively so far this season and I think he's a better runner on synthetic turf that he is on natural grass and you know as you look at Joe Montana it's a big day for him the kid who went to Ringgold high school a Monongahela then went to Notre Dame he said he was never in Three Rivers Stadium never until today even though he hails from this part of the country there's been a lot of time of it this afternoon and 14 on the for - San Francisco Tanna pitching too big too [Applause] the 44-yard line in a Cooper's a hungry he has not scored a touchdown in his last 12 games and last year he at nine touchdown only two rookies were hired Billy Sims at 13 and so his sophomore year they've really shut him down yes and he's a there's such a dramatic change in their personality this year their success has been based on the fact that they're playing much much better defensively than they did the 1980 they're 6 in total demons [Music] [Applause] yard and what would have been a law he's amazing he looked like he was following the instructions of a traffic cop that time started to his right looked like he was going to get snuffed at the line of scrimmage watch him goes right got the ball in the wrong arm then goes to the left goes up the middle maintains possession and finally makes the necessary yardage for the first down so a low razzle-dazzle blow the man out of Penn State Franco Harris look at that 48 yards in the first quarter it picks up a first and 10 on the pittsburgh 34 yard line Frank Collard will carry on top of him his Fred feed so Dean number 74 not only making sacks but he's also in there on the tackle he's quite a player yes I think one thing that you have to concern yourself a little bit he crushes the pasture so well that when he's in there I think it's very wise to try to run at him some give him some business against the run to make him stay at home you know an interesting stat 50 now they're on the 42 but the important thing is that you take advantage of field position they haven't done that so far to and Eric Wright takes him down a long walk from Bobby Leopold and about downfield deep against this defense they have to be patient and there's a great illustration of it they're trying to hit Smith deep lot is with him step first step he's got help coming from the inside there's no way in the world you could catch that ball unless one of the defensive backs has a heart attack in a process of jumper for the bowl you know Ronnie Lott has five interceptions and they've all come in the last five game and a fourth on the run he out of USC is really finding himself a hold on the left side was quite Hicks three years out of Michigan who is the senior citizen in the gets into San Francisco territory at the 48th Pittsburghers used a double wing formation and meeting on one side the back of the split end on the other side on four or five occasions and they really haven't succeeded in doing a lot of good business from that formation but you can see Pittsburgh rolling up the yardage and five forty-seven blowing teeth no good what a lick as crowd and Williamson really whacked Calvin Sweeney coming over and Martin also came over from his position and really gave him a shot for they really ladybot on the play you know this reminds me Hank seeing a player down and watching games week after week it is very noticeable how not only the team members stay away from a fallen teammate as you see Calvin Sweeney go down and take that look again but also it appears that the coach is disdainful at the injury the coach never goes near the engine yes I think there's a variety of philosophies on that I'll come back to that in just a minute alone at last oh that Doris I need the blimp behind me because the ground feel you may not know that Goodyear radials and their components have hundreds of quality checks behind them but he sure likes the mine that she gets Doris will go a long way with the blimp behind us mileage one more reason Goodyear is out front worldwide I should have married Stanley he just has a dog excuse me I'm not the same crazy coach who used to store him around the sidelines yelling at the officials towel sign here in Pittsburgh Calvin Sweeney by the way is OK and on a fourth and five Craig Colgate had a Tennessee Fredy Solomon and Dwight Hicks are the deep men and this ball will hit and go so about the one and go in Mark Malone who's a great athlete as well as the third string quarterback was down there you know the reason Sweeney got such a shot the last time coming across the middle the ball was thrown a little bit high and for that reason anytime you are all spread out boy you really get a shot as hard to bring the ball down and keep possession [Music] Calvin Sweeney the two-year veteran out of USC he was a fourth round draft choice in 79 shaken up on that hard hit by called in Williamson but as you can see Calvin is okay meanwhile San Francisco will put it in play first and 10 from their 20 you talked about the attitude of coaches with regard to injured players and some people feel that they don't want to get involved in disturbing the concentration of the game by going out to see what's happening they say that's the responsibility on you the doctor and the trainer I always felt you know you're in a people's business and I was always concerned about those people and whenever we had any kind of an injury I always like to go out there see what was wrong yeah when you look at a telecast to come to the ballpark most of the time you get the feeling that the head coach couldn't care less about the guy who's down I'll tell you a funny thing though I was back years ago we had after Haynes it was a great running back he got hurt on the field I said Oh Abner where'd you get hurt he said right here where I'm laying all over first and ten on the San Francisco Chuck tall 13 years longest AFC coach with the same team first in ten on the san francisco 20-yard line Harold Cooper behind in motion is written fast releasing to Cooper and the big guys had been birdies what a collision with Woodruff as the risk is concerned they're not gonna come up the ball but they haven't really had much of an opportunity to express the offensive personalities so far in this campaign the rush just did get it away flag on the play the ball going out of bounds and Miller was dropped to his knees so perhaps it'll be running into the kicker personal foul that's what it is and that means San Francisco will retain the football and pick up the automatic first down as Jim Miller goes to the sideline that's what happens when you do not take the proper angle you must take a position about a yard and a half in front of that punter and get the ball as it comes off his foot if you get any closer than that you're going to hit the kicker and that's exactly what happened on the personal foul running into the kicker by the defense number 62 first down so you can take another look as Miller's coming in punch ilk in he's a fellow was born in Istanbul Turkey there is and tunes put in the crunch on Miller first intent the ball but they're not concerned too much about what they do with it they just want to control the line of scrimmage and help keep the defense off the pasture because that's what they really want to do remove the ball down there with a board package on the second and seven from the 30 [Music] trying to find a light but did black shirts all over the place and down he goes Lanford ham shell and Woodruff Alden on the hip Pittsburgh defense is ready chasin like gangbusters been some kind of a reverse some kind of a misdirection play would be very effective against the Pittsburgh Steelers or whether playing at this stage of the game so far looking at the numbers Mon patty [Music] [Applause] [Music] finally releasing off the hands of hacker and he was hit by Jack thank amputee does a good job he took a sniff of the running fake went inside and then all of a sudden he saw it was going to be a pass got right back in the path of Earl Cooper made a good play and for that reason the ball was not caught though on a fourth and three Jim Miller will come back to punt again he'll be punting from about the 28 yard line and Jim Smith the wide receiver is also a safety on the Steeler 25 and
