than the nearest NFL tandem and if they don't hurt you in the air the upstarts from San Francisco can crush you on the ground station point Pat Hayden who was sacked six times last week the highest total against the Rams in five years they also stopped Wendell Tyler in the highly touted Ram ground game and Hayden had to be conscious of 74 you'll see him Fred Deane Pittsburgh alive and well and tied with Cincinnati for first place in the AFC Central familiar figures Terry Bradshaw 12 years out of Louisiana Tech and Franco Harris 10 years out of 10 state here busting 1 for 35 yards against the Houston Oilers and if Bradshaw goes to the air it will not be to Lynn Swann but it most certainly will be to young Jim Smith on the ground Houston stymied by another Steel Curtain and so that's it the kids from San Francisco and the veterans from Pittsburgh coming up the middle 60s and the leaves on the trees are rusted and cold brown and yellow Paul is here hi everybody I'm Vin Scully along with Hank Stram Hank we all know that the 49ers have won five straight the Steelers once a great team seemed to have browsed themselves against Houston Monday night is there any other discernible difference between the two clubs penny I think to use the boxing vernacular I think that the San Francisco 49ers are a boxing kind of a team the Pittsburgh Steelers are the sluggers the knocked out team you talked about the infighting will come from Frank Pollard and Franco Harris the homerun threats the knockout shots will come from Brett Shaw to Stallworth or Smith on the other hand it'll be a finesse kind of an offense ball control passing by the San Francisco 49ers I think we're going to be in for a treat this afternoon we're going to t see two outstanding football teams here in Pittsburgh [Music] well as you look at Chuck Noll you can also understand that the San Francisco 49ers lost the toss and so ray Wersching will tee it up at the 35 yard line and deep will be Larry Anderson number 30 and Greg Hawthorn number 27 for Pittsburgh we're just about ready to get it underway in a magnificent day and the Steelers virtually impossible to beat at home that'll be the challenge Greg Hawthorn fumbling and picks it up at the 1 surrounded at about the aid and down he goes at the 10 yard line east and Ramson number 80 the first man down and so we'll get this one underway now as the steel is in poor field position will put it in play against San Francisco here's the way the Steelers stack up with Terry Bradshaw his running backs are Politan Harris and his wide receivers Stallworth and Smith Lynn Swann is out with a full hamstring the tight end is Benny Cunningham with Kenny wolf Lee Webster Brown up front [Applause] at the 10-yard line and he'll stay on the ground and Franco Harris finds daylight after the 25-yard line Dwight Hicks made the tackle and immediately Pittsburgh establishes itself with a first down in the first running play I think if this game goes along then I think we'll find that the team that runs the better of the two will probably do the best job here this afternoon and that was a great start there you see the linebackers Harper buns Reynolds Turner lot right Hickson Williamson the secondary the Bradshaw Franco Harris wide right and John Stallworth left he goes to store worth they take some lick immediately and he goes out of bounds at about the 31 yard line Eric right knocking him out Stallworth has caught a pass now in 55 consecutive games that's a pittsburgh club record you know then the defensive secondary of the San Francisco 49ers normally play very loose and I think we're going to see Pittsburgh changed their personality and throw in front a little bit more than they usually do and also throw in the back remedy second and three Stealer 33 and it'll be the second man Collard hit by archie reese and Dwayne board board number 76 is the man that got away he was originally drafted by Pittsburgh you know though that was a counter play then that time where they faked Franco Harris to the right side and gave it back to Pollard on the left side but the defense in the 49ers pretty well - that would be third and one on the 35 yard line of Pittsburgh Randy outside Cunningham and they go to Harris going wide outside and he is brought down as he tried to get around on the outside milk McCall knocking him down at about the thirty six seven yard line and they picked up the first down so Franco Harris who needed a hundred and sixty-two yards to become the third player to rush for ten thousand you know he has had seven one thousand yard year he's been an unbelievable back and I think he started the season a little slow we saw him early in the season he didn't look like he really had his legs under him as well as he has the last couple of times we've seen him he's doing a superb job at this stage of the season first and ten on the steal a 38 yard setting up goes to the right side to Cunningham it was hidden dropped Willie Harper hit him at about the 42 yard line so they picked up four it would be second in six I think we'll see Pittsburgh throw a lot more than they usually do they'll throw to their tight end they'll also throw to the backs coming out of the backfield because the basic structure of the San Francisco 49ers as well whereby they play a zone a lot and there's a lot of soft spots in that zone and you know Terry Bradshaw has thrown only six interceptions this year that's the second lowest average in the AFC Kenny Anderson leads him on the 42 yard [Music] Harris and Harris still on his feet in goes down at the 30 as bun got him and that should be just about enough for another first down we had him spread out all over the field that time and through a screen pass to Franco Harris who you see Bradshaw setting up nicely thrown the ball to Franco Harris who does a good job of running he knew exactly where he had to go for the first down and got the yardage Williamson number 27 had a shot but missed though they started on the pittsburgh 10-yard line and very easily have moved 40 yards to midfield and Bradshaw on a pursuit came with stallworth going left [Music] the right side both packs release and he's picked up and dragged down at the last second by Fred Dean number 74 and of course Dean a remarkable player with seven and a half sacks and three games for San Francisco I then could match up between ray penny the offensive left tackle 74 in Fred Dean 74 when Dean is in the ballgame on obvious passing situations will be an interesting matchup to watch here this afternoon though on the san francisco 47 yard line at second and seven [Music] this all shot back [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] though the stealer is a little disjointed on the previous play Cunningham lined up on the left when he should have been on the right and that time Collard was not sure from a wing whether he should go back to a pro set yes interestingly enough they had almost slot formation two receivers only two on the left and they had San Francisco in a situation where really they didn't know what was happening and instead of taking advantage of the situation they waited too long and they created a five-yard penalty [Music] Bradshaw is going to be swallowed up and it's gym stuffy number 79 on the play [Applause] that time didn't know where the lineup it looked like he was moving when the ball was snapped you know this is something that happens to you then when you're a definitely strong sledgehammer team and then you try to change your personality although that it's hard to do that it looks like Pittsburgh is having a little difficulty at this time I would in the world who they want to change their personality well I think they want to take such a discussion the flag will be picked up there will be no penalty and it will be third down for example Pittsburgh license throw the ball deep downfield the way the defense is they cannot do that early in a game so they have to go to a short passing game have to exercise very very good patience and push berg is not a patient sixteen yards now on the mine Bradshaw deep down the left side no good intended for Jim Smith with four white shirts all around him so they were looking for steady and he was the primary receiver we all have a tendency to do what we do best even though the planning is such where you want to travel slowly you want to take the bus instead of the jet on that particular case they try to take the jet even though they had double coverage so now Colquitt who has had only 17 of those 43 punch returned at all and yet Freddie Salomon and white Hicks the twin safety men there Solomon both witness 20 angling towards the right side and it will be Salomon allowing the ball to bounce and it is discovered about the 5-yard line by Calvin Sweeney number 85 a fine play by Sweeney two years out of the USC to get down there to handle it so San Francisco will put the ball and play on its own 6-yard line no score the report Houston leading Cincinnati 7 nothing stable to Mike Renfro to get him on the board first and 10 on the San Francisco six yard line with Cooper and hat send it up wide to Cooper and Cooper's going to be pumped at just about the 10-yard line as Donny shell knocked him out of bound Prentiss telecast presented by authority of the National Football League intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or the use of the telecast without the express written consent of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League is prohibited there's the 49ers with Montana at the wheel Pat and Cooper the running backs Clark and Salomon the wide receivers the tight end is Charles young audit airs pulling across and von Horst upon second and five from the 11 sound and emotion and he's going deep and overthrows Freddie Salomon Donny Sheldon L with him that time he moved the pocket normally he throws most of his passes from the pocket evidently they have a great deal of respect for the defense of the Pittsburgh Steelers he rolled to his right with the anticipation of trying to hit Salomon downfield head low pressure and threw the ball over the top falls incomplete [Music] with John Goodman playing at end with zombies Lee inside there replaced then you have gun & Poor's hand Lambert and Cola linebackers and behind them in a secondary wood blunt shell and comments there motion is Errol Cooper and it isn't straight ahead patent but he swallowed up stop the 49ers they'll have to find Jim Miller the Barefoot Potter will be coming in and crowd basking in the Brillion Pittsburgh sunshine for the great the great barefoot kick in the first one I ever saw was your terrific we played for the University of Hawaii years and years ago well he's not from Hawaii from the University of Mississippi he once hit the gondola in the Superdome the only other part to do that is Ray guy he comes right away and he hangs it up Jim Smith making the reception at midfield with a fair catch and so that's where Pittsburgh will put it in play first in Canada midfield we have eight minutes and 24 seconds left to go in the first quarter the 49ers nothing inputs a minor a big day double-header football of NFL on CBS Sports most of the country will see the Cowboys and the Eagles or dacoit versus Washington to listen st. Louis first Washington first and 10 mid fee for the Steelers eight minutes left in the first quarter no score to be frank O'Hara swallowing but no way as Jack Reynolds drops him right at the line of scrimmage Jack Reynolds of course twice a Pro Bowler with the Rams and helping the 49ers after a contract dispute with Los Angeles you know the 49ers used that really exercise good judgment of taking Reynolds he was an excellent middle linebacker but now he's playing a middle linebacker in a 3-4 he has some extra help inside and for that reason he'll be even more effective with a 3-4 defense playing inside than he was is a middle linebacker on a fourth Ridge Chicago leading Tampa Bay three nothing in the early going it is second in eight San Francisco 48 yard line powered on a wing and Franco Harris straight ahead bullying his way at the top is buns and at the bottom is Reynold as the two linebackers bringing big Franco down I think as a general rule of thumb I think any time you play a team like the 49ers the best thing they do is go sideways east and west and I think the best thing to do against them is to go right at the defense I think Pittsburgh is strong enough to do that they're gonna get stopped on some occasions but basically they have to stick it right at the 49ers and I think that'll be their best way of holding the football on the ground era so far has carried for 26 yards though it is third and three the ball on the san francisco 42 yard line in motion is Randy Grossman and they go to Harris and goes the other and it would appear as if he slithered for the first down he's amazing he runs with such good control that time he looked like he was going to get stuffed at the line of scrimmage but you can't run like that unless you have very very good vision you run with your head up on your eyes open he runs that way and for that reason he was able to pick up the next necessary yardage for the first down you know Franco Harris has played 11 consecutive games without rushing for a hundred yards of more that's the longest such streak of his career so he's hungry and we'll watch his yardage today first and ten on the san francisco 38 yard line Stallworth and spread the right [Music] with the point down coming out of the back bill was flying collared and he was picked up by Jack Reynolds it looked like a bad gyroscope the way that ball left the backfield he threw that end over end it looked like and Keena Turner number 58 the right outside linebacker was blitzing on the play one thing about Bradshaw only six interceptions and he needs four more touchdowns to tie the illustrious Sammy Baugh leading New Orleans green are they hookers just kicked a 25 yard field goal second and 10 from the for Terry Bradshaw machine and it'll be frank car it is wrapped at about the 31 yard line as he first knew the left side a good block by Corazon number 77 thus for year men on a South Carolina though Pollard is quite a horse yes in that time Steve Corson number 77 a right guard pulled to his left and trap did a good job of creating Running Room and Pilar did a good job of running inside on the blood three on the san francisco 31 yard line no score with 540 but it is the Steelers can [Laughter] [Applause] Franko's on wide Crysta William Harper tripped him up at the 30 but he would have picked up another it was he picked up the first down Ronnie lot number 42 of the corner back there go outside watch 42 come up he's got a chance to make the play but he goes a little bit too wide and was knocked to the outside for that reason Harris was able to bounce inside and pick up the yardage for the first day Franco Harris now has carried the 36 yard six Harry six of light [Music] Stallworth is inside Smith in a slot right [Music] it'll be Franco any fumble and San Francisco recovered it is Erik right number 21 who fell on the ball the rookie out of Missouri for Utah you talk about dodging a bullet they were on the move and Harris fakes inside goes outside the ball is knocked loose recovered by Erik white number 21 Francisco exchanged a pod in the fumble recovery [Music] going to Dwight Clark and he's down at the 35-yard line picking up the first down for six years Randy cause has slugged it upfront for San Francisco what's the club's character the San Francisco 49ers of 1981 are a mixture of young enthusiasm and a lot of older players that can still remember the years when things didn't go quite as well and we're far from overconfident team even though we are six and two and we go week to week and we're looking forward to finding the x world champion Steelers here in Pittsburgh first and ten on the 35 yard line of San Francisco Montana over the middle and he's got Dwight Clark again and he gets all the way to the 44 yard line before the Steelers swarming down bill Walsh has a very well-conceived offensive scheme and personality they don't care who they play they are not going to deviate from their plan they're a passing possession kind of a finesse kind of a passing team there you see Clark coming across he anchors between the linebackers not very deep but he makes the catch runs for another seven or eight yards and that's what they did they nickel and dime you today but Dwight Clark he came into this game having caught 42 passes and Solomon with 37 it's left and Salomon is right on a second one they go straight ahead with Errol Cooper and I believe Cooper picked up the first down as he fell across the 45 yard line [Music] San Francisco acquired the services of Johnny Davis from Tampa he's big and he's strong and he's a great inside runner he's not able to play today but he complements Cooper who runs very well outside not as well inside they'll miss Davis on the short yardage situation stuff this afternoon you can look at the NFC leaders with brown up top foot bar coming right after [Music] first in town [Music] no score in the first quarter Ricky Packer gets out to about 250 cat made the tackle and there's a flag [Music] you know San Francisco will play with two receivers in the backfield they'll take the running backs out put two receivers in the backfield and make give them be covered by linebackers it's a good setup and a good system and they have a lot of fun with it well we'll get the call now from Bob Frederick offensive holding number 71 first down for Keith von Horst eight years up front he's the veteran of the offensive line for San Francisco and he was guilty of the infraction here so that'll make it first and 20 from the 35 yard line Atlanta on a navy yard run by wildest Frances leading New Orleans ten nothing first and 20 on the nine-year 35 yard line and here is Earl Cooper cutting back inside and dropped at the 41 yard line and with that let's make the trip from Pittsburgh to Brent Musburger in New York any of the Atlanta Falcons trail San Francisco by two games beautifully conceived and around Lynn Cain handing off to Wallace Francis 8-yard touchdown and as you've just reported now Atlanta leads New Orleans 10 nothing let's go back to you alright second and 14 on the 41 yard line of San Francisco in motion is Earl Cooper and Montana [Music] Montana going deep to Cooper no good Woodruff right there with him boy he had him too had even a look get set and throw the ball or throw it accurately he had Cooper down the sideline it would have been a big play Cooper incidentally hasn't run that that impressively so far this season and I think he's a better runner on synthetic turf that he is on natural grass and you know as you look at Joe Montana it's a big day for him the kid who went to Ringgold high school a Monongahela then went to Notre Dame he said he was never in Three Rivers Stadium never until today even though he hails from this part of the country there's been a lot of time of it this afternoon and 14 on the for - San Francisco Tanna pitching too big too [Applause] the 44-yard line in a Cooper's a hungry he has not scored a touchdown in his last 12 games and last year he at nine touchdown only two rookies were hired Billy Sims at 13 and so his sophomore year they've really shut him down yes and he's a big strong running back six to 227 played his collegiate football at Rice plays an extremely good receiver comes into the game with 20 catches Jim Miller potting from his own 35 yard line and Jim Smith standing down at the 15 yard line of Pittsburgh and he's going to stay right there at the 20 [Music] the first bend down Milkha call and then Bobby Leopold [Music] so Smith unable to make any kind of a return and he's dropped at the 21-yard line of Pittsburgh that's where they'll put it in play no score 141 left in the first board David would leave scoring from three yards out to get Miami it's very first in Paris is the up back with Pilate back of it and score within a slot right inside Smith and it's a quick handoff to Harris carrying now to about the 27 yard line the 40-yard mark now early in this first quarter he's rushed for 44 yard and Pittsburgh is doing a good job of getting off the line of scrimmage the one thing when you talk about the San Francisco 49ers people wonder why there's such a dramatic change in their personality this year their success has been based on the fact that they're playing much much better defensively than they did the 1980 they're 6 in total demons [Music] [Applause] yard and what would have been a law he's amazing he looked like he was following the instructions of a traffic cop that time started to his right looked like he was going to get snuffed at the line of scrimmage watch him goes right got the ball in the wrong arm then goes to the left goes up the middle maintains possession and finally makes the necessary yardage for the first down so a low razzle-dazzle blow the man out of Penn State Franco Harris look at that 48 yards in the first quarter it picks up a first and 10 on the pittsburgh 34 yard line Frank Collard will carry on top of him his Fred feed so Dean number 74 not only making sacks but he's also in there on the tackle he's quite a player yes I think one thing that you have to concern yourself a little bit he crushes the pasture so well that when he's in there I think it's very wise to try to run at him some give him some business against the run to make him stay at home you know an interesting stat about Fred Deane in his career he has been awarded 20 40 ball no score at the end of the first quarter Scully along with Hank Stram welcome to the start of the second quarter in Pittsburgh no score the Steelers second and 7 on the pittsburgh 37 yard line Jim Smith wide right Pollard in a wing with fall with wide leverage and in Frank Pollard and he takes a lick right about at the line of scrimmage Lauren's pillars number 65 who has seven sacks imperative here's the way the first quarter went Hank you see anything there except of course I guess the fact that Pittsburgh has rolled up some yardage and apparently yes they have and I think the big difference in the game so far has been filled positioned the 49ers started the first drive on the five than a 21 Pittsburgh had one on the 50 now they're on the 42 but the important thing is that you take advantage of field position they haven't done that so far to and Eric Wright takes him down a long walk from Bobby Leopold and about the 48-yard good for a first down [Applause] making a good reception and then the additional yardage for the first down 7-7 for Cincinnati Pete Johnson scored from four yards out to tie it up Dean has been in there right in he just leaves a game and you talked about the controversy he had with his there's a contract I don't think there was that as much as it was I think they were tired of buying all those elbows right 24 hours burst in ten on the steel of 48 yard line play-action fake to power [Music] and broken up Dwight Hicks and Ronnie Lott and it was Hicks his hand and knocked the ball away from Jim Smith boy those kids are something yeah they are and this is it was a great illustration of what we talked about going into the game is going to be very very difficult to get the ball downfield deep against this defense they have to be patient and there's a great illustration of it they're trying to hit Smith deep lot is with him step first step he's got help coming from the inside there's no way in the world you could catch that ball unless one of the defensive backs has a heart attack in a process of jumper for the bowl you know Ronnie Lott has five interceptions and they've all come in the last five game and a fourth on the run he out of USC is really finding himself a hold on the left side was quite Hicks three years out of Michigan who is the senior citizen in the secondary for San Francisco second and ten pittsburg 48 no score in the second quarter [Music] franco and he picked up a few Danny buns on top of him pillars at the bottom along with Harper and he gets into San Francisco territory at the 48th Pittsburghers used a double wing formation and meeting on one side the back of the split end on the other side on four or five occasions and they really haven't succeeded in doing a lot of good business from that formation but you can see Pittsburgh rolling up the yardage and five forty-seven blowing teeth no good what a lick as crowd and Williamson really whacked Calvin Sweeney coming over and Martin also came over from his position and really gave him a shot for they really ladybot on the play you know this reminds me Hank seeing a player down and watching games week after week it is very noticeable how not only the team members stay away from a fallen teammate as you see Calvin Sweeney go down and take that look again but also it appears that the coach is disdainful at the injury the coach never goes near the engine yes I think there's a variety of philosophies on that I'll come back to that in just a minute alone at last oh that Doris I need the blimp behind me because the ground feel you may not know that Goodyear radials and their components have hundreds of quality checks behind them but he sure likes the mine that she gets Doris will go a long way with the blimp behind us mileage one more reason Goodyear is out front worldwide I should have married Stanley he just has a dog excuse me I'm not the same crazy coach who used to store him around the sidelines yelling at the officials towel sign here in Pittsburgh Calvin Sweeney by the way is OK and on a fourth and five Craig Colgate had a Tennessee Fredy Solomon and Dwight Hicks are the deep men and this ball will hit and go so about the one and go in Mark Malone who's a great athlete as well as the third string quarterback was down there you know the reason Sweeney got such a shot the last time coming across the middle the ball was thrown a little bit high and for that reason anytime you are all spread out boy you really get a shot as hard to bring the ball down and keep possession [Music] Calvin Sweeney the two-year veteran out of USC he was a fourth round draft choice in 79 shaken up on that hard hit by called in Williamson but as you can see Calvin is okay meanwhile San Francisco will put it in play first and 10 from their 20 you talked about the attitude of coaches with regard to injured players and some people feel that they don't want to get involved in disturbing the concentration of the game by going out to see what's happening they say that's the responsibility on you the doctor and the trainer I always felt you know you're in a people's business and I was always concerned about those people and whenever we had any kind of an injury I always like to go out there see what was wrong yeah when you look at a telecast to come to the ballpark most of the time you get the feeling that the head coach couldn't care less about the guy who's down I'll tell you a funny thing though I was back years ago we had after Haynes it was a great running back he got hurt on the field I said Oh Abner where'd you get hurt he said right here where I'm laying all over first and ten on the San Francisco Chuck tall 13 years longest AFC coach with the same team first in ten on the san francisco 20-yard line Harold Cooper behind in motion is written fast releasing to Cooper and the big guys had been birdies what a collision with Woodruff as he goes down at the 32 and with that let's pay Brent Musburger now they're visiting the Big Apple with a bite out of it in New York Bennie watch the quarterback Archie Manning here's a lesson that Hank Stram taught it we've got to set up the end around and look at them buried over here it's gonna throw the lead block against a Falcon defender there and Jeff throws turns it upfield 23 yard run that set up a field goal there's now 10 3 Atlanta over New Orleans back to you now in Pittsburgh all right they all get paid they all have to play first and 10 on the san francisco 32 yard line Clark is on the left side Solomon is the wide receiver - swallowed up by pores picked up his fourth sack out of Arizona state number 90 he's playing for LC Greenwood 6:3 245 pounds good player and Gary Dunn number 67 also got good penetration and helped down that rush of Joe Montana you know this year is going at 19 Sachin they had only 18 sacks in the entire 1980 season they have really improved in that 20 on the 22 [Applause] to get it back in a crowd broken up intended for Charles young [Applause] a landmine that time so to speak because there was a lot of photo where the ball was he told a little bit behind but there was no way in a world he could have gotten that ball between two three defenders and he very rarely does [Music] [Applause] [Music] data crossed at 25 to about the 27-yard to get to the 42 there along and San Francisco will have to give up the ball again it's amazing the 49ers have had not had good field position they are a high percentage kind of a team as fire is not taking the risk is concerned they're not gonna come up the ball but they haven't really had much of an opportunity to express the offensive personalities so far in this campaign the rush just did get it away flag on the play the ball going out of bounds and Miller was dropped to his knees so perhaps it'll be running into the kicker personal foul that's what it is and that means San Francisco will retain the football and pick up the automatic first down as Jim Miller goes to the sideline that's what happens when you do not take the proper angle you must take a position about a yard and a half in front of that punter and get the ball as it comes off his foot if you get any closer than that you're going to hit the kicker and that's exactly what happened on the personal foul running into the kicker by the defense number 62 first down so you can take another look as Miller's coming in punch ilk in he's a fellow was born in Istanbul Turkey there is and tunes put in the crunch on Miller first intent Cisco 31 as Miller goes to the sidelines for repaired and Montana keeps the football [Applause] right there to handle wold easily the rookie out of West Virginia easily hit straight up by Coors and that's that he barely got back maybe a yard more than the line of scrimmage Buffalo leading Cleveland six to nothing in the second quarter we get that report you know San Francisco they want to run the ball but they're not concerned too much about what they do with it they just want to control the line of scrimmage and help keep the defense off the pasture because that's what they really want to do remove the ball down there with a board package on the second and seven from the 30 [Music] trying to find a light but did black shirts all over the place and down he goes Lanford ham shell and Woodruff Alden on the hip Pittsburgh defense is ready chasin like gangbusters been some kind of a reverse some kind of a misdirection play would be very effective against the Pittsburgh Steelers or whether playing at this stage of the game so far looking at the numbers Mon patty [Music] [Applause] [Music] finally releasing off the hands of hacker and he was hit by Jack thank amputee does a good job he took a sniff of the running fake went inside and then all of a sudden he saw it was going to be a pass got right back in the path of Earl Cooper made a good play and for that reason the ball was not caught though on a fourth and three Jim Miller will come back to punt again he'll be punting from about the 28 yard line and Jim Smith the wide receiver is also a safety on the Steeler 25 and he really has to backpedal and spit will make the reception at the 5-yard line and head dropped at the 15-yard line fine play and no flags on the play Lynn Thomas down there to make the tackle though we have 9 minutes and 10 seconds of the half the Steelers in the 49 reading it in play first and 10 on the Steelers 16 yard line 9 minutes and 10 seconds of the half no score as score worth and Smith goes wide right Franco Harris and Frank Pollard are behind Terry Bradshaw and it'll be a play-action fake the back staying into and Bradshaw passing all alone his Smith finally wrapped up by Ronnie [Applause] line as they pick up an easy first down yes a good-looking play-action fake taking to the full-back and then thinking to the halfback yet all the time in the world and then he throws an outside pattern to Smith 86 it goes down and breaks through the outside the young defensive back our 42 Bonnie luck way off him that time and makes a big play big gain on the play last year Jim Smith and ten starts caught nine touchdown passes so you have to really keep an eye out playing for Lynn Swann was a pulled hamstring first and ten on the 36 Bradshaw over the left side to score worth on the tackle by Eric right before the Steelers before being shut out I sure rolling up the RT and this this is what they have to do they have to throw as we talked about earlier in front of those defensive backs they're doing that now they did it to the right side now they come back with star worth making a catch on Eric Wright on the right side they have to exercise patience they're doing a better job of it now and they also have to throw more play-action pass Franco Harris 56 yards on the ground Bradshaw has had 457 and here comes Harry on a draw but reading it nicely on the forty-niners Willie Harper to drop him [Music] chucked oh that's an amazing streak he's been the coach of Pittsburgh for thirteen years that's the longest Association for a quote to the same team and you know as well as I do the attrition is very high it surely is and a chuck has really done a super job which is really obviously that miss perks dealers but he don't think he gets nearly the recognition that it really deserve gonna be second and eight the ball just shy of the 50-yard line [Applause] Trentino almost got across but he just did get back on time Bradshaw deep over the middle of Stallworth no good Carleton Williamson on the other and it is John Stallworth who is shaken up [Music] putting the same squeeze that got Calvin Sweeney earlier well you talk about the Nutcracker drill look at this one with 21 Eric right watch this Stallworth good concentration trying to make the catch right knocks the ball down they make good contact once the ball is on the ground that's the second hard hit for Colin Williamson weekend the champion Michael Spinks is undefeated he faces a challenge of Vonzell Johnson for the WBA light heavyweight championship next weekend on CBS Sports Saturday many moments ago at his Superdome a flea-flicker an Archie Manning dakedo merkins 46 yard the Saints are now tied with the Falcons back to you at midfield for the Steelers no score in the second quarter slop right for Terry Bradshaw in fact he had four receivers ready to go deep under sometime Bradshaw throwing picked up in the air by Carlin Williamson Williamson is at midfield still on his feet and gets back to the steal of 45 the rookie out of Pittsburgh who was recruited by the University of Pittsburgh as a fullback has picked it off we can take another look as there some words set down on the field he's got a lot of time to throw the ball and continues to try to throw the ball deep the ball is a little bit too high and Carlton Williams Williamson makes the interception number 27 does a great job and now the 49ers have good field position the Karlin Williamson picking off the pass but there was a lot of pushing and shoving after the play and a lot of angry words and let's see what it results [Applause] angrier than Pittsburgh that's about the only indication you know the 49ers have not been a filled until this interception and evidently idiot interception is going to be nullified bill walsh squinting in this fall sunshine trying to figure out what happened and in a moment bob frederick will tell us he sure can't tell watching the players the Pittsburgh offensive unit is back on the field after leaving it originally Bob Frederick the official the referee Luke palazzi the umpire Jerry Bergman the head linesman Bob beats the line judge bill Swanson the back Vaughn Murphy the side judge Donaghy the feel-good Bob Fredrick will give us the interpretation it's a personal foul a facemask by the defense and we had two prior through the pass prior to the past and then we had unsportsmanlike on a continuing action by both teams which will be disregarded we will penalized five yards in a previous plot will be a first down lady talked about it coming up gold in Pittsburgh so the penalty the face guard against and automatic first down for Pittsburgh so not only do they pick up a first down they get the ball back after having lost it in their own territory [Music] interception that lay here 37 the archfield the ball is on the san francisco 45 yard line [Applause] Bradshaw to Frank Collard followed was tripped up by Wayne bored at the line of scrimmage [Music] this is second time Pittsburghers had very good field position one other occasion in the first quarter they headed down to 50 and got it to the 20 and fumbled now they have it on the plus 45 and they have to take advantage of the situation or else this could be a long afternoon for Pittsburgh Steelers 650 lat bill capiche a 46-yard field goal kappa 3 3 [Applause] on the play as Bradshaw fires it low complete the store worth [Applause] but let's get the interpretation on the flag they Jim Stuckey the left end was off-site on a play for the 49ers and Pittsburgh was indicating immediately that they had picked up the first down oxide number 74 in the defense refused he's out of the plays it was Fred bean [Music] in order to get all those sacks he has to be exceptionally quick in every nine and he's caught jumping off meanwhile Joe Ferguson - Joe Krebs 15-yard touchdown pass and Buffalo leading Cleveland 13 nothing in the second quarter we're just in ten on the san francisco 35 yard line what good time for a play-action pass here Bradshaw on a straight drop back setting up and looping it down the middle and it is intercepted it is picked off at the last minute on a pass intended for John Stallworth and the defender making the reception Dwight Hicks is down and unable to move Stallworth thought that Hicks was going to get up and run with it John was trying to get back to make the [Applause] meanwhile San Francisco and Pittsburgh many of them stay up around the 40 yard line arguing with one of the officials Hicks is still down on the field I'm pretty surprised that Pittsburgh continued to try to throw the ball deep the way the secondary is playing they've got the short stuff when they've executed it very well when they throw the ball in front of but they haven't had any success whatsoever trying to go up on top and remember Bradshaw came in here with the second-best ratio of interceptions two passes in the AFC a throne only six no score 617 to the half Dwight Hicks evidently landed heavily after making the interception and the night is gonna at first intend on there that they did stop a steal a drive and is Ricky Patton getting out to about the 14 yard line with Korres making the tackle now let's go to Brent Musburger in New York for an NFL report many of San Francisco looks over his shoulder here come the Atlanta Falcons Steve Bartkowski a 49 yard scoring stripe to Alfred Jenkins but ninth time that combination has seized up for six this year back to you now in Pittsburgh second and five on the 14 yard line for San Francisco no score in the ball game 542 to the half [Music] [Applause] I'm Tana going to the left side to Dwight Clark at the 20 and he's given at by Woodruff's at about the 24 yard line that'll be plenty for the first down to keep the drive alive and also give Montana a little room to maneuver a position kind of a pass outside a very good call to white Clark who makes the catch who follows a very orderly process as he makes the catch I'm talking about Clark in that he watched the ball in there he watches the ball into his hands and then tucks it away and then tries to get as much yardage as he possibly can which is very outstanding [Music] along with hacking and he has it at the 25 and at the 29-yard line Robin Cole really drilled him along with blood [Music] remember earlier Calvin Sweeney was shaken up for the steel as he is leaving the field and going to the dressing room white Hicks rib goes to swing our he took a horrendous look from Colin both shots came over the middle and haven for on the 30-yard line Salomon coming out of the backfield shutting up - Ricki patties at the 35 and gets to the 40 yard line and that's enough for a first down so francisco has moved the ball 31 yard to the 40-yard line in montana that time Riddhi made a good read he tried to throw the ball downfield to the flanker who was hooking inside the linebacker dropped off so a very wisely threw the ball outside to patton and he ran for the Artesia may the birthday first in town [Music] side Ricky Patton hesitates as no hole and he falls forward maybe for two yards that'll make on the 42 like trying to throw spitballs at a battleship when they try to run the football that he can't get much yardage or wider that defensive pittsburgh patent is carried about five times for only 13 yards Hank Cooper three times for 10 yards easily once for two yards alleged [Applause] [Music] in motion quick on the fly oh no reception no reception that's one of the few times here they didn't look it into his hands like he normally does he started to make the reception and it looked like he took his eye off the ball momentarily and then lost it as he tried to run upfield and the ball was knocked loose third and nine [Music] 7 for 12 466 yard [Music] [Applause] Tanna throwing in a crowd and completed it to Solomon for the first time on their own merit San Francisco has gotten into Pittsburgh territory you know Montana that time again take to run and in bootleg to the right side rolled out got away from all the traffic there's no pressure on him whatsoever Solomon knew exactly where he had to be cut beyond the marker and kept both feet in bounds another reception for the 49 ought to be first in ten on the pittsburgh 49 over the sidelines Thank You Kate stealer 14 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] left [Music] took Clarke inside the 45 and he shopped at about the 43 yard line Lambert cold all three line back before they are triple wing that time three receivers on the left side had the area flooded one on the right and he just took the ball downfield to Clarke again who is a very outstanding possession kind of a pass receiver he knows example where the Oakland spots are he entered in the hole that Tom had got the reception wife is now caught four for 39 yards the key man in the [Music] in motion is easily hopeless a little release to Hofer coming out of the backfield and he is brought to the 31 yard line by shell and is a flag on the one minute stayed into blocking and suddenly slithered through he does a good job of acting he pretends like he's going to block and his slip right over the middle done that time number 67 was putting good pressure on the quarterback but Hofer did a good job of finding a spot for his penalty on the play this would be the second very tough penalty against San Francisco the other in remember was on the apparent interception that was nullified this one slows up the offense offensive pass interference number 31 second down [Music] that's wall easily who is coming out of the backfield guilty of offensive pass interference that makes it second and 14 capisco territory no score 239 copra now is a wide receiver on the right side and Solomon coming out of the backfield in motion looking toward Solomon and throws it away cutting across was Dwight Clark the intended receiver and with that let's get another report from brent musburger in new york Benny the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the longest pass play for a touchdown ever it is Doug Williams to tight end Jimmy Giles an 81 yarder and the Buccaneers leap the Bears 10 to 3 back to you and Pittsburgh okay Doug Williams of course remember the gag when they used to say the only man who could overthrow the Ayatollah was Doug Williams an 81 Hart pass he could overthrow anybody third and 14 on the san francisco 47 Montana on a straight proper fakes going deep intended for easily no good [Applause] easily taking a bump at the last minute from JT Thomas he felt Thomas had interfered with him and the official said no that time Clark was open in front evidently Montana did not say looked like he was going to try to throw to him decided to throw deep but it was well faded we'll cover there was a bump by number 24 JT Thomas as the ball was in the air but evidently the official thought both people were trying to make a great block by Randy cross on Bob pours to start that way the punt deep is Jim Smith the wide receiver at the 15 after the 20 and he is belted by Randy cross right at the 20-yard line mixing it up as cross who made the hit walks away [Applause] among others down there in the middle of the argument is Lynn Thomas and Bobby Leopold of San Francisco [Music] it's a post possession foul evidently [Applause] and it'll be against I think Lynn Thomas 28 personal foul on the defense and personal foul in the offense they will offset go offsetting personal fouls [Music] with a first intend on Pittsburgh's 21 a timeout no score with 217 to the half Ben 10 on the Steeler 21 yard line with 2 minutes and 17 seconds to the half the Steelers rollin up yardage and nothing else the closest they came they had a first in 10 on the San Francisco 25 and stumbled on a 20-yard line two minutes of the half no score Bradshaw with Franco Harris behind him Frank Collard and it's deflected by big Archie Reis number 78 to knock it down that's about the fifth time they use that double wing formation they run come at several times through from uh several times and on all occasions they really haven't done much with it at all you can see bradshaw's numbers he had two interceptions but one of them was scratched because of a penalty and of course she came in here with only six [Music] has to be pasted especially throw play-action masses on her lead on in the second or second and ten on the pittsburgh 21 and bradshaw looking for some help throwing intercepted by Wright and Eric Wright still on his feet to the 15 to the 10 and he's gone in for a touchdown Dwight and as a flag on the play as Eric Wright the rookie out of Missouri brought it in but hold everything you see if Pittsburgh has dodged another bullet now it looks like it might be against Pittsburgh I don't know I don't know if a lot is a very good official Ronnie Lott telling everybody that it was against Pittsburgh but Bob Frederick is the man is going to tell us what it counts [Applause] with two minutes and one second to the have no score they March it back to the 46 yard line of Pittsburgh illegal use of hands on the return first down okay so the interception instead of going all the way for a touchdown [Applause] [Music] no score in the ball game in Monica [Applause] Clark who is dragged down by Robin Pole [Applause] and they'll marketed about the 42 and Clark shaken up a little bit I talked to Bill Walsh yesterday and asked him I said specifically why is Montana such a good quarterback and he said one thing instincts is the tremendous instincts yes I'm sorry get away from the trouble and get the ball to Clark downfield and the people around San Francisco say the trading of Steve de Berg took a great load off his shoulders and consequently the development of a young quarterback getting message furnished by the National Football League second and seven on the Pittsburgh 43-yard line fifty-five of the half no score right interception San Francisco for the first time in very good position leaning to the right look right and then dumped it off to Charles young and he's down at the 40-yard line jackhammer made the tackle with all of that don't we picked up three yard yeah he was a little late in sing him easily when in motion to the right side and looked like he was trying to hit easily and then he came off for the right side and finally came to the tight end watching steps up and delivers a ball to the tight end but he's not able to make much yardage on the play number 59 Jack ham is right there meeting after a five yard game about third and three on the 40-yard line Fox shows a minute and 47 to the half no score the comparison Bradshaw 7 for 15 for 64 yards but to interception that he's been sacked once Montana 11 for 84 88 yards no interceptions he has been sacked once for 10 yards so Montana with 18 attempts today and that's a hundred and seventeen without an interception you know next week on CBS Sports Saturday be a light heavyweight championship on the line Michael Spinks the 1976 Olympic gold medalist will defend his crown for the first time against a tough Vonzell Johnson be ringside for all the action next week at 4:30 3:30 central and Pacific on CBS Sports Saturday third and three on the Steeler 40-yard line I'm Vin Scully along with Hank Stram [Applause] release having the ball the hoeper no good he was trying to lead him and couldn't quite alley-oop it to him with Jack Lambert right there with him [Music] [Applause] a big day on the NFL CBS handed him today most of the country immediately after our game we'll be seeing the Dallas Cowboys in the Philadelphia Eagles or in other areas Detroit vs Los Angeles st. Louis versus Washington a flag down on the play and it would be defensive holding against Pittsburgh though it's a first down first in cannon on the pittsburgh 35 yard line [Music] [Music] here goes easily to get outside at the last minute by [Music] at the 45-yard line so JT making a good play on wold easily the rookie out of West Virginia who was cut by Pittsburgh back in 1980 you know the defense of Pittsburgh here you see him running to the left side he's got the ball the wrong arm he has no protection whatsoever made to keep bringing that up but that's a fact but the way they come up as cripples they do looks like sometime an option faster it is ready Solomon [Applause] releasing too easily and easily at the 30-yard line and he is pinched down he has to get this a 225 for a first down they still have a tough five yards to go responding to what they see they tucked a ball out to the outside too easily but look at the reaction Donnie shell number 31 the strong safety really comes up there quickly and makes the initial contact on the play it'll be third and five on the pittsburgh 30 at halftime Jack Whitaker presents the legends of the game Norman Norman Norman Brooklyn that's quite a story day more than a half time to talk about norm hang oh that's exactly right and of course he's he's really a character in a suit was a great football player in a super person who asked he's a column oyster Armsby could become he's got such great begging for not only do the legend norm been Brocklin Brendan herb of the alarm with scores and highlights in the NFL today so stay right with Joe Montana he went to Ringgold high school over in Monongahela not far away and his pass list was somewhere between 40 and 50 for today's game and yet he certainly appears to be calm and cool not at all rattled about playing in front of the home folks 25 years old you know you have to be impressed with the way he throws a football a follow through when he has time to throw the ball is really outstanding Joe Montana 62 200 pounder 25 years old and you can see the third down conversions Pittsburgh has done very well and San Francisco has done poorly we have seconds to the half no score at the 30-yard line ray washing his longest field goal the year has been 47-yard and you can see San Francisco's only one time out 35 and at Salomon and motion the ball on the pittsburgh 30-yard line the metal all alone is Clark for the party we run out of bounds inside the ten yard line making the reception and they're gonna spot it at about the seven yard line where it'll be first and goal a sneaky move by Clark he sets up as a on the other side of the field on the left side comes across on the delay pattern makes the catch he's wide open down e-shelf falls in the process trying to be in the hunt and he's finally tackled by number 49 Brainerd row but a beautiful play by the 49ers half a dozen passes for 65 first and goal on the 744 seconds to the easily and hoeper and it's poker and hookers inside the five - about the 4 yard line a pickup at 3:00 [Music] they're very wisely called timeout San Francisco has rushed for nine touchdowns this year's UC Cincinnati leading Houston 21 to 7 the latest score Kenny Anderson to Cris Collinsworth from 18 yards it's a battle of Stabler and Anderson Atlanta putting on the heat Atlanta lady New Orleans 24 to 10 in the second quarter of course Atlanta William Andrews scoring from a yard out Bartkowski has passed for one Francis's run for one and they're trying to catch San Francisco with a second and goal from the five yard line the 49ers are now out of timeouts and as far as time is concerned 37 second we're talking about San Francisco you think of them as a passing team but the balance is excellent Hank 11 touchdowns passing nine touchdowns rushing yeah last year their their run pass ratio was very high in front in favor of the pass this year they came into this game with averaging 36 runs a game and 30 passes which is very good balance and the men who have scored rushing are Johnny Davis who is not in there and Ricky Patton who has not been in there the running backs right now are Hofer and easily unless they make a last-second change another score Richard Todd - Wesley Walker 39 yard touchdown two field goals by pat leahy and the Jets a leading the Giants 13 nothing in the second quarter to repeat second and goal ball on the 5-yard line and time left 37 seconds to the [Applause] a motion to the lab Tanna looking right turns it into Charles Young the tight end for the touchdown young just bounced away from Donnie shale and made the catch but hold everything we'll take another look there he goes back into the pocket he's got plenty of time to throw the ball sets that watch him step and throw watching steps up nicely look at a good follow-through delivers are right on the money to young who makes the reception number 24 bounces right off JT Thomas he knocked Donnie shale to his knees on the collision that's why he was able to catch the ball apparently all along [Music] - touchdown San Francisco leading 6-nothing washing is 11 for 11 in point the holder is Fontana and the kick is good [Music] so thanks to the interception by Eric right which gave San Francisco the ball on the pittsburgh 46 yard line San Francisco drives for the touchdown capped on that short pass from Joe Montana to child young you can take another look at Young's reception it would be his third touchdown catch of the year they said Solomon in motion to the left and watch him let's watch his follow-through once you've stepped but look at his follow-through the right leg is off the ground he's like a pitcher but young does a good job watch him knock I don't know whether we see that or not we didn't see him knock down shell but he's big and strong and he made the touchdown catch and they go ahead set or nothing with 32 seconds left in this country that's in the first half Greg Hawthorn and Larry Anderson will be deep for Pittsburgh and they kick by ray Wersching interestingly the kickers today ray washing was born in Austria David trout whom we haven't seen the kick of her Pittsburgh was born and grew up in Bolivia his parents were missionaries there is Ray Washington there's the drive of course the asterisk and footnote it all started because of the interception by Eric right where she gonna thump it and going back as Hawthorne taking it at the goal line and Greg is to the 10:20 and they stack him up at about the 28 yard line bill ring number 30 was the first man down there to make the initial headin areas good play next week here's the NFL on CBS shaping up as quiet away Detroit versus Washington the Giants at Green Bay Philadelphia st. Louis Tampa Bay versus Minnesota Chicago at Kansas City Atlanta San Francisco and New Orleans versus Los Angeles with 26 seconds left Pittsburgh has three timeout [Music] low Rumble got away from pillars number 65 picked up by Williamson and it will be San Francisco boy so powered fumbles and that's another turnover four turnovers for Pittsburgh there you see it is a trap inside with Pollard getting turned that give hits gets hit from the backside the ball bounces loose and is five recovered by number 27 Carlton Williamson and of course Lawrence pillars number 65 had it first but the linemen unaccustomed to holding onto the pigskin in his first at ten on the pittsburgh 36 21 seconds to the more easily and easily heading for the sideline got out of bounds at the 35 yard line he got rid of that ball just about the time he got shot got a shot from the backside but he still got her right on target too easily for he shows a lot of poison it'll be second than 9 of all at the 36 yard line [Music] ray washings longest field goal of the [Music] and he's going to keep it to the 30 and go out of bounds of Solomon through a pretty good block at Jack ham and Montana wisely heading for the sidelines to stop the clock with 8 second good judgment on a part of the young quarterback Montana there was a possibility that he might be able to get the ball down field to Hofer but he wisely ran the ball instead stopped the clock and now there's 8 seconds left in the first half ray Wersching is 6 for 8 in field goals Joe Montana is the spotter be holding the ball at the 35 almost the 36 yard line [Music] 47 where she could long and perfect so thanks to the word bumble [Music] doesn't miss the opportunity they pick up three more points as Wersching is seven out of nine in field goals 12 for 12 in points he's a CPA in the offseason he has to be a CPA to keep track of his points he doing exceptionally well he's really a great kicker and the difference in this game so far ready then is the fact that the 49ers have had good field position on three occasions and they took advantage of it on to the Steelers have had had good field position on two occasions and didn't come away with any points and that's pretty good difference in this game so far if you're a statistician you might also notice that the team's scoring first has 165 percent of the games in the NFL this year and a reminder at halftime GAC Whitaker's legends of the game norm ban Brocklin plus brandon herb of scores in highlight ray where she teaming up on the 35 Anderson and Hoth on our deep finished let's just go on a knuckleball kick down about the 35 yard line Sidney Thornton picked it up but ran into his old man he ran into toots vilkin and down they go as far ins out of the Wolves your howling in Pittsburgh San Francisco leading the Steelers 10 to nothing this is Ben's go along with Hank Stram [Music] the Miller Brewing Company Brewers a Miller High Life if you've got the time the wolves are howling in Fitchburg San Francisco leading the Steelers - nothing this is Ben Scully along with Hank Stram [Music] the Miller Brewing Company Brewers a Miller High Life if you've got the time we've got the beer and by Allstate we insure your home your car your health your business and your life you're in good hands with Allstate well we're just a moment away from the start of the second half here the first half numbers the individual performance Franco Harris rushed for 58 yards all by himself don't you subtract that from the 85 yards rushing for Pittsburgh you see that it was really a one-man show Frank Pollard for 24 yards but probably Hank the most important section of all those numbers the turnovers none by San Francisco and 4 by Pittsburgh yes it'll ring and Wilson deep now for San Francisco and David trout kicking this one to Wilson Michael [Applause] football let's see it was after the whistle after the whistle the tackle was made by David little number 50 but the whistle blew then the ball went live though San Francisco thanks to the return Mike burn we'll maintain possession of the football as we go unto the second half with San Francisco leading 10 to nothing we're the quarterbacks anything near it gets your I know I think the interceptions that Terry Bradshaw through early in the game Riddhi has made the difference one before the half and of course one earlier but that really has been a difference in the contest so look at the percentage the high percentage of passes completed also by Joe Montana with 68 percent 10 on the San Francisco [Music] and across but he is full Torres was there along with him what making the tackle Miami leading Baltimore 17 [Music] 7/7 Seattle Green Bay just warming up in the second quarter checking in 10 [Applause] Kocher Solomon is emotion to the left throwing to Cooper at the 10 and the big guys across the 15 then Woodruff again over there Montana trying to rush him his brief very frustrating because you look like he had him that time done looked like he's gonna make the tackle but he dumped the ball off to the flat and the back was able to make a nice gain on a play and how is 30 short [Music] Francisco 18 yard line they all Niners [Music] kolo is here from Youngstown the bottle Oh along with a fish we feel like they're on the road third and one and it is easily Famara ng his way for the first down he got out across the 20 to the 21 yard line Wald easily the rookie out of West Virginia first and ten on to 21 is there a difference in the San Francisco after last year and this year that's apparent Hank yes I think they're very obviously throwing the ball they have better balance they've been ahead going into the second half and third fourth quarters but much of the time so they able to run the ball with more than a year ago Paul Hofer out to daylight across the 30 with Donnie Schell hanging on and drops him at about the 33 yard line you know we should duck this in to show you what kind of it San Francisco is facing against the NFC here at Three Rivers Pittsburgh is 15 and 2 they have won 14 straight at home against the NF the last time pits FC team was December of nine Rann first and 10 on the 33 in mind giving it to wall Easley and he's out to about the 37 Lambert and Cole making the tackle you know the one thing is if you hear will say this draw play again Bill Walsh calls to play from the sidelines there's a basic vanilla draw play and easily pops through there for a nice gain into play they're very unpredictable and they keep you off balance Oh we'll see what they do now second and six on the 37 yard line Salomon is quark is left and they'll stay with loafers and hopefully is out across the 40 to the 41 yard line Paul hopers six years out of Mississippi he's been a hard nosed for San Francisco all that time yeah he's really been a great performer it's just a shame that he's had so many problems from an injury standpoint because he was really I thought one of the outstanding backs in the National Football League when he was helped third and two for San Francisco Niner 41 yard line San Francisco was one for six but a tupa two in their last possessions on third down conversion indicating for someone to move throwing no good being bumped out was easily and it be a flag on the play Thomas right there defending little guy only five feet six a hundred and sixty five pounder came off with Wilson percent [Music] quit it then they won't be able to the bill ring at a BYU and Mike Wilson at a Washington State a reminder next weekend on CBS Sports Saturday the WBA light heavyweight championship sphynx the 1976 Olympic gold-medalist defending his crown for the first time against Vonzell Johnson the ringside for all the action next week at 4:30 3:30 central and Pacific on CBS Sports Saturday let's see now they're gonna have to kick it over again offside retic so San Francisco with ring and Wilson getting mixed up as to who was going to handle it and they get a break Pittsburgh offside and that means crowd will have to tee it up at the 30 yard line he's the youngster we mentioned earlier grew up in Bolivia his parents were missionaries and he went to school right here and at five six this trout's a big catch [Applause] there's run out of attorney right out of the stream 85 is Mike Wilson bill ring from BYU as you see Seattle leading Green Bay 14 to 7 Jim Zorn 12 yards to Corning for the touchdown [Applause] [Music] hi David Prowse once again ready to kick off [Applause] and it's a good cake bill right across the 20-yard line Anthony Washington number 42 made the tackle as he got out to the 20 the David shout for a little guy he can really thump it from the 30 he just about kicked a thing 70 yards and now first intend for San Francisco ten to seven in favor of the 49ers ball on the San Francisco 21 yard line barkos left [Music] the running back and it's going to be a little swing to patent on a screen and he gets out of course 225 setting up the screen pulling was Fred Quillin the center and pulling through the block that picked up a couple of yard and here again it's a very high percentage kind of a pass it's a quick screen to the left side with Ricky patent number 32 making him the catch has a good seem to run into that time and takes advantage of it picks up on his chunk on the play I always marvel at how the center can get out there to throw the block for the screen the anticipation on the part of the center is very easily and easily across the 30 about - about the 34 yard line Thomas coming up to bring him down JT from Florida State oh that's enough for the first down Wally's leap doing a lot of work now we're not seeing much of Earl Cooper or Johnny Davis easily picking up 15 yards [Music] dr. hopper and Hofer it takes a lick by Jack ham and has knocked out of bounds at the 35 yard line so for all of that they gain two yard ham was coming in at to have an opportunity to make the interception on the play but he didn't get there quite quick enough but of course now on a second and eight you immediately think about Dwight Clark he has been the number one receivers that dart has bought six 465 fifty two thousand eight hundred and seventy eight taking in the ball game today [Music] and it's Paul Hooper and hopers out across the 40 very close to the first down it's a question of just where they spot the ball and from our angle ooh 18 about a yard you talk about a player getting the very most out of his ability and skill Paul Hooper is that kind of a player boy he is pretty something special well ho / 29 year old Mississippi the third and one of all on the board [Music] they started on their 21 [Music] [Applause] and it's easily and he easily gets the first sound back Donnie shale riding is back in about the 48 he eased right through that hole and good shaped any though it is first in ten Walt Easley just a rookie out of West Virginia big guy he's 6 1 226 pounds like an olive oil on his pants that time the way he spread through that old he's strong Eason Ramson now comes in as a wide receiver number 80 he'll be on the left side first and ten on the [Applause] and there goes easily and he's into Pittsburgh territory to the 48 yard line how to build a ball club Melissa tell you the draft into Pittsburgh no trades at all I guess I guess Chuck Noll just doesn't believe in prey whether there he likes to grow his own and he's done a great job with it and that's basically the philosophy of most teams in the league the I think we could take over a team like the 49ers who do the most you can with what you have plus the fact that you get some free agents which they have done very well second or six on the Steeler 48 yard ten to seven San Francisco warm-up intended for Solomon but way out of bounds Woodruff right there with him ready Solomon has only caught one ball for 10 yards so they've done a pretty good job of cutting him off that ball was thrown very high that time and for that and the reason it was thrown high like he normally does and that's why the ball went over the top and falls incomplete ready Solomon of course with Miami traded his sandwich [Music] many people realized that Solomon was an excellent quarterback merci attempt at play some of the pros of six on the steel of 48 easily staying in to block Montana would sometimes pick off Jack Lambert Lambert's at the 25 and push that around another scalar interception one for a touchdown and this one by Jack Lambert you know Pittsburgh Pittsburgh has really done a good job of jamming receivers and not letting him to get a very good release downfield that's what happened here the receivers got jostled around trying to come down field Paul hope ur and for that reason the ball was thrown and the linebacker Jack Lambert was able to make that under section good anticipation on his part though it is first intend on a San Francisco 22 yard line first time Bradshaw has had to touch the ball in the second half carry with a lot of Johnny Smith touchdown with that time ran an inside pattern like he was going down and broke to the outside the defensive back looked like he was here we say at the release by Smith he's jammed at the line of scrimmage by lot lot is looking at the quarterback instead of looking at the man and he breaks to the outside he had to have deep coverage both have had good coverage from Williamson from the outside number 27 but he never got there in time 4:22 and kicks this one and got it in on the right side it was kind of close he almost missed it 24:23 take another look at that pass by Terry Bradshaw there we see it again play-action fake then goes back to the outside to Charlie to Smith Jim Smith makes the catch touchdown Pittsburgh this roomy inexpensive Subaru station wagon not only goes far on a gallon of gas via the Atlanta Falcons pulls out he wants his favorite receiver Alfred Jenkins he's got him it's a 60-yard storage strike tenth time this season they hooked up for a TV 31:10 back now defense Kelly in Pittsburgh okay Brandon of course San Francisco started the day leading Atlanta by two games so there could be a swing of one right there and the Rams haven't gotten started yet in Detroit as the NFC West gets Wilder by the minute in the end zone is Mike Wilson he's going to bring it out to the can David little number [Applause] but that slowed him down and look at all the Steelers and they have really come to life thanks to the two interceptions by Mel Blount for a touchdown and Jack Lambert that set up the touchdown so San Francisco takes over first in ten on its 10-yard line the first time they had the ball in the start of the second half they started on their own nine after the interception they had it on their 21 and Montana threw his second and now they start off first ten one he packed me out across the 15 felled at about the 18 yard line Donny shale making the tackle interestingly enough all the scoring has been set up by turnovers interceptions and fumble recovery Eric Wright intercepted that led to a San Francisco touchdown [Music] changing the second half that's easily carrying it out across the 22 the 23 once again let's go back to Brent Musburger in New York penny it is long ball Doug Williams he's got 81 yards to Jimmy Giles now he goes 51 yards to Kevin house and the Tempah Bay Buccaneers are pulling away from Chicago 17 3 back to you and Pittsburgh okay we're playing short ball here outside of the interceptions they've been punching it out on the ground first and 10 on the San Francisco 23 [Applause] cut back across the 25 and he's dropped at the 27 but he has to get out beyond the 32 for a first down the San Francisco team is a very deliberate very calculating kind of a club they know exactly what they're going to do they've played the percentage as well they don't take many chances they got liquid a couple of pass interceptions but that doesn't happen very often that's why there's that's why they came into this game 62 oh it is the second and five [Music] [Applause] and he's loose patent is upended across the 35 yard line Robin polled hit him at the ankles the patent picks up the first down they've done a pretty good job they're running most of the time they're running when they do run successfully to the right side and their offensive right tackle Keith our horse is a big strong guy latest college football at Minnesota but he's 6 6 263 and he gives you the strength that you're seeking at that tackle position [Music] running for San Francisco first intent on the 35 away throwing on the run OB [Applause] the heat was by Tom Beasley the four-year man out of Virginia Tech Beasley just missed him deep in the backfield Beasley is playing for Joe green Montana has an uncanny ability to get away from on rushing rushers time to look like he was going to get squeezed but he got out of the grasp of Beasley that time and was able to get rid of the ball and that lose yardage on the play they have Goodman Beasley pores and gun up front [Music] thirty-six tripped up by Beasley and finally knocked down by Robin Cole so you have easily and Beasley on that play Hank sounds like the old DoublePlay combination and at the end of it Robin Cole he's a cousin of the great woolly Davey Sherman with the defensive end with Cleveland and Green Bay four years ago Robin Cole broke his arm against San Francisco and Robin's gonna head for the nest on a third in about seven [Applause] Montana looking down the middle and releasing to Clark at the 45 big guy across the 50 upended by Donny shale another big pass by Montana to the his favorite receiver joy Clark made his seventh reception and his forty ninth of the year watch the follow-through here on my Montana you get a good shot of it when he's throwing able has enough time off the room the follow-through oh boy he throws a ball as well as anybody in the National Football League and he delivered a beautiful strike that time though it's first and ten on the steal of 47 yard line for Joe Montana and calm that is 14 to 10 in favor of the Steelers on to begin to suck in the third quarter [Music] [Applause] and chased by Greenwood throws and it is caught by Cooper at the 30 yard line he took it away from Jack him and he went out of bounds just shy of the 25 he makes the fake and rolls out and Greenwood Riddhi is in hot pursuit doesn't quite get there in time Cooper is open and makes the play runs down the sideline for a big first down for the San Francisco 49ers last two games out because of a bad knee he's the oldest Steeler is a few weeks older than Joel green and I was a little tough for him to chase Montana half the first and ten on the Fitchburg 25 [Applause] [Music] going to Cooper again and he makes the reception at the 20-yard line they picked the five gonna be second and five Montana also has very very good vision he sees what's happening downfield and throws the ball to the open receiver most of the time Montana is 21 for 32 he had 177 yards and he just picked up five more so a hundred and eighty-two yard [Music] there has just kicked a field goal and it is 13-6 buffalo second and five on the 20 yard line [Applause] [Music] releasing to Solomon were made the reception shy of the tenant stepped out of bounds much Clerk here we see him again watch it back into the pocket done rushing strong inside a floats of the outside number ninety courses is in hot pursuit he delivers a ball but it's a little bit too wide and goes out of bounds another comparison the rushing and passing play is very similar [Applause] [Music] miss Cooper tannerite through childe Yun's hands with Donnie shell there with him remember when young caught the touchdown he knocked shell flat but this time there was no meeting and Rea washing is going to come in for three it was interesting I watched the 49ers workout yesterday and Young was wearing gloves I've never felt that there was a good idea for receivers or wear gloves but I've over to Bill Walsh and I said bill why is he wearing gloves in practices he didn't wear anything he wants to have practice but he won't the surest way Wersching will now attempt a 37-yard field goal [Music] and it's blocked on the line [Applause] or lysing the unseen Robin told number 56 fell on the football I'm not sure whether it was Robin and block do do not but we have one minute and 30 seconds left in the third quarter Pittsburgh 14 San Francisco 10 um Beasley 4 years out of Virginia Tech and now you'll see him in action it is Beasley's hand that gets in the way of washing 27 yard effort actually from the 27 yard line that Beasley deflects the field gold attempt so a 37-yard field goal attempt down the drain first and ten on the pittsburgh 25 and is still 14 to 10 Steelers bumping into Brown who was trying to block for him and he fell from maybe a yard Larry Brown 11 year man out of Kansas who is the heaviest stealer Brown is 270 pounds and when Harris hit him down he went Falls for one that'll make it second and nine on the 26 [Music] heiresses rush for 59 yards Smith wine [Music] will screen for Collard that Webster thrown a block on I ended at the as he got across the 35 Eric right and Danny buns came up but he would have been gone good block by Webster on Reynolds yes and Greg woof Lee number 73 the left guard also got out in front of that play in good shape but the play unfolded beautifully it was a nice gain on the play though it is first and ten on the pittsburgh 37 14 to 10 Steelers with only 13 seconds left in the third quarter [Music] Badshah then he fumbled at the 40-yard recovered the ball Ronnie Lott recovered the fumble after the catch where that was an alert play on the part of block number 42 the ball was delivered right on the money for Pollard but as he came down he fumbled the ball and there was lot to pounce on the fumble ball Oh Ronnie lot handling the Pollard and of course for Fowler that's his second fumble pilots fumble earlier led to the Wersching field goal with only a couple of seconds left in the first half and now San Francisco needed some help and here it is here's Pollard and Terry really delivered the ball beautifully right on the numbers but there you see gets hit a lot makes contact and the ball falls right yeah he already kind of just fell into ball 22 Hicks came over to hit him along with Danny buns and caused the fumble and in Ronnie Lott fell on the ball so San Francisco gets a big break at the end of the third quarter with the score Pittsburgh 14 San Francisco 10 in francisco giving up two quick touchdowns in the - ten easily staying in the block releases in the pass of Homer's fingertip he just led him too much he had already run away from Jack Lambert but the pass was too long or they had a lot of room there on the outside had he been able to look at the ball on target especially with Jacqueline knees watching hoeper run by though the barefoot boy Jim Miller as you can see he's had an impressive 55 yard punt and a 44 average standing all alone and he left a backtrack Smitty will take it at the 10-yard line for Pittsburgh [Applause] and grabbed by Mike Wilson from behind at the 25-yard line Wilson a wide receiver number 85 caught him on the back and Jim Miller has gotten the ball away in Pittsburgh in possession with Pittsburgh leading the 49ers 14 to 10 flying machine Walter Payton soars into the end zone for the Bears they're right back in it and Payton's over 9,000 yards now in his great career back to Vince Kelly [Music] [Music] Walter Payton has gone over 9,000 yards today but the Bears have only scored three points meanwhile Franco Harris is having a pretty good day when they let him have the ball and they let him have it now and he gets out to the 31 Harris will go over 60 yards carrying the football today you know when you think about those great runners Hank and you realize that Payton and you see the Bears now picked up seven more over 9,000 yards with a badge that's pretty incredible and of course the great thing about Payton is that he dances every dance and is strong very very strong base an awful lot of yards in the fourth quarter it was a very sad line where Payton earlier this year said I know I'm getting paid a lot of money but I'm getting killed second and five on the pittsburgh 31 bradshaw to Franco Harris and Harris gets outside and there was a fine block thrown there by Craig Wolfe Lee and willfully slow in getting up but he's the one who made to play work Franco Harris is really amazing the way he can pick his way again he knew exactly where he had to go watch it an underneath handoff they don't run that play it's an option trap or sweep he delays looks inside then goes back outside a good block on number 21 Eric Wright and he comes very very close to making the first half wolf lease lock was on Jack Reynolds and that really opened up the door so at the 35 yard line it's third and one [Applause] and they have picked up the first down easily as Russell Davis carried that time to pick it up Davis giving Harris a breather he's a two-year man out of Michigan though first in 10 pretty good average better than seven yards a carry this year that's very impressive the fourth round choice two years ago that's impressively do that the pregame warm oh oh wow first and ten on for a 40-yard line here comes Frank college remember he twice today this time he holds on for dear life you know it's very easy to understand and see why the 49ers came into this game with a six and to record their defense really is impressive after seeing imp them in the past they've done a terrific job defensively in fact one of the reasons they beat Los Angeles last week was not Montana and the orphan the defense stopped the ran double it was five times where you expected Los Angeles to come up with something in his yeah that's right I saw the films of the game yesterday and they had great field position most of the afternoon but never took advantage of it because of the great play of the 49er Depot second and six on the pittsburgh 44 Pollard is on a wing now Bradshaw going deep and it's going to be picked off by Carlton Williamson and Williamson is to the 40 he's to the 45 to the 50 at the 45 and finally out of bounds at about the 42 yard [Music] watch watch Bradshaw throw the ball watch him throws her right into traffic trying to hit the tight end Cunningham and Williamson does have does a magnificent job of coming up with the interception and Ryan get back for good field position for the 49ers next weekend the champion Michael sphinxes CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by Toyota who invite you to see all the 1982 Toyota cars and trucks at your local dealer oh what a feeling to drive a Toyota and by Holiday Inn who welcomes you to its people-pleasing hotel well a Steelers stinger keeping us all busy as bees busier than San Francisco right now burst in Cannon on the steel of 42 yard line [Applause] Cooper is back riki patent and Cooper releases and the past is to Freddy Solomon who's dragged down at the 36 and a flag on the play it could be a holding penalty and the way Keith von Horst is acting I think it's going to be holding against von Horst at San Francisco if he says seventy one that's Keith's number Bob Frederick the referee will faceoff the five of course that's a sizeable penalty because the pass was completed to the 36 holding on the offense number 71 when Fon horse got hot you knew right away the 8-year veteran out of Minnesota was guilty of the infraction headfirst in 20 can tear it up and that he started squeak a little bit hon to play and he's got Solomon and he's at the 30 yard line before blunt can knock him down and that's a first down San Francisco and the middle was wide open Solomon came off the ball without any problem nope no bump at all broke into the middle area the ball was deliver right at the numbers he makes the catch was fine he tackled by the bet from the backside by Blount number 47 but the 49ers have good field position on the plus 31 first down on line go to patent and Ricky patent still on his feet across the 25 he kind of hidden went sideways for five yard Miami leading Baltimore 27 to 10 in the fourth quarter Yvonne Shulman a field goal buffalo leading Cleveland 15 to 6 McDonald Brown at the ball in the end zone for safety [Music] leading Houston 34 to 7 in the fourth [Music] second and fourth in the 24 written 'cat grabbed by robin poll for a loss in the san francisco back for you pittsburgh gets right on the play there was a blitz Robin : and they called a sweep nobody blocked him he got penetration you get penetration you're gonna let make people lose yardage any time they tried to go sideways like they did let's play it's a big day on CBS for the NFL coming up next when most of the nation the Dallas Cowboys versus the Philadelphia areas Detroit vs Los Angeles st. Louis vs. Washington [Music] and keep it and he's going to run he's to the 25 out-of-bounds at the 20 and I believe he picked up the first down yes last step he saw the red marker and made his cut for a first down at the 20-yard line it was really a brilliant play by Montana that looked like much witty but actually the composure of the young quarterback watching go back into the pocket and he's flushed out of the pocket aware he starts to the right sees he can't get a rhythm through the ball run to left and he knows exactly where that marker is look at him step with his left foot he gets [Music] 20 well Pat we'll carry that to about the 18 yard line well maybe you think of a to shock and innate honey 18 [Music] it's really fun to watch Donnie shell on the big site in Charlie young there have involved in a pushing show contest have been doing it all govenor doubt each other at each other during during the course of this contest [Music] [Applause] [Music] play-action fake [Applause] Clark bumped into blunt and let's see a flag on the play Clark wanted to get inside and blunt Bart collided at the 10-yard line and let's get the ruling on it defensive holding evidently against Pittsburgh the Bob Frederic will place the ball at the 14 yard line for a first down defensive holding number 47 first down not only content evidently had a grab on him hardline there goes easily and the Blackshirts are all over him at the 10-yard line and with that let's go to Brent Musburger for an update in New York Finney we've got an update from Tampa pence Evans of the Bears pulls out and Ricky watches all alone defensive coverage mistake Evans drills him Thomas comes from behind strips the ball Washington falls on it the buck still lead by seven let's go back to you and Pittsburgh well here at second and ten on the Steeler 10-yard line 14 to 10 seven minutes [Music] occasionally easily makes the pass too young at the 5-yard line Charles young making the catch the tight end drop in to fly they have to get to about the four yard line for a first down that easily doesn't make the run very well he stops Chozen prematurely but in spite of that Charlie young out leaps the defensive back and makes the reception balls yard-line her down yards for a first down five yards for touch on the right side easily panic easily and he's going to get the first down and they will stop him at about the one-yard line the big wall easily 226 pounder out of West Virginia carries the ball for the first down they get a good surge by the offensive line that the left guard John Aires with woman and also cross all do a good job of bottom off the widest first and goal on [Music] yard average and he's made some very tough yard I tries to cut back and he's in the only man to head him off was Woodruff and he just ran over Dwayne Woodruff for the touchdown Walt Easley well he had to be had to be impressed with the way he read the play was off-tackle but he jumped outside watching runs to the left side boner on arm it's good leverage with the right shoulder but blows it in for the touchdown beautiful strength movement by easily or easily I should see number 31 Wayne Woodruff is a hundred ninety-eight pounder but he was able to give a run right over it 2:14 the hold is made by Mike Schumann and morsi's kick is good the Schumann was the holder and not Montana that time and the 49ers are leading by three as we take another look at wold easily carry me back to Old West Virginia 1714 Niners day that led to the touchdown meaning all the touchdowns have been the result of turnovers a wild game 1714 49ers five five left in the game and Ray washing kicking from the 35 with Anderson and Hawthorne deep and Hawthorne gone he'll take it out from 2-yards in Gregg running over people flag on the play and he's finally dropped in about the 30-yard line [Music] you know you have to be impressed with the way the 49ers have played the opportunistic football this afternoon they've had good field position on four occasions and took advantage of them on three and that's why they lead this game at this time 17 to 14 with 523 left in the game there was a penalty on that return by Hawthorne well pushing and shoving on the part of the Steelers so an illegal use of hand I will bring the ball back to the 17 yard line illegal block above the waist from the rear number 62 first down so the illegal block was really a push by Tunch Elkin and a reminder coming up next it'll be Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in most of the country or Detroit Los Angeles st. Louis and Washington a doubleheader on CBS today and now let's see about the Steelers [Applause] down by three points first intent on the steel of 17 and and Benny Cunningham who dropped the ball after the whistle however and he dropped it at the 21 yard line he has to get out to about the 27 for a first down Cincinnati leading Houston 34 to 14 on a pass John Reeves - Ken borrow for 51 yards in the TD [Music] fourth quarter now with the Jets leading the Giants 16 to Center the other pony [Music] Franco Harris drift up at the 25 and falls forward to about the 27 Jack Reynolds Wayne Ford and Dan [Music] 73-yard Franco's got those happy feet boy he really made some good lose at the line of scrimmage now look at this Tampa 20 [Music] capiche 39 yards for Tampa [Music] first in town on the fifth [Music] employ action passes on early downs have been good for post okay very successful red bean is in there trying to get at Bradshaw but he can't do it and that show is gonna run right into stuffy but he got away from Stuckey and finally he goes down at the 35 yard line and it was spotted at the 36 gym Stuckey number 79 had him but he got away from him there you see Terry back in the pocket a rusher goes beyond the quarterback you see pugs 57 trying to make the play he goes through the revolving door and gets through the opening and picks up a nice gain on the play and to the ball on the pittsburgh 36 yard line left in the steel is failing by three Franco Harris and Dwight Hicks couldn't get him and Harris fumbled in San Francisco I believe recovered nope after the whistle after the whistle Carlton Williamson fell on the dead-ball it had already been blown dead and that was a counter play they ran which means he takes a step in one direction and then there he steps to the left goes to the right side a good cavity on the right side good blocking by Corson and brown he goes right through that hole does a good job of running down steal Willie Harper number 59 comes through there from the backside and that's the ball loose but the ball was declared dead that was awesome for Dwight hick standing and watching Harris coming right at him first and ten on the san francisco 43 bradshaw gunning it in and out of the arms of Benny Cunningham with 2 minutes and 14 seconds left in the game 17 to 14 San Francisco and Pittsburgh on the move if you're thinking field goal David trout has kicked 8 of 11 he has picked his last six straight and his longest is 43 yards mr. nice to run a trap on this situation second a pass and they ought to run inside whether they frank O'Hara and they punch him down at about the 35-yard jarred you Steve forsen number 77 that's what they like there and it's a good call because they anticipate a very good rush by the defensive right in that time was Lawrence pullers and they try to trap him and did a good job on the play that's the 38th time that Franco Harris has rushed for a hundred yards water back 1714 Niners tonight on CBS starts with 60 minutes and then for the first time on network television Clete Eastwood stars in every which way but loose followed by the Jefferson that's all tonight right here on CBS and they're going every which way but loose right now we have two minutes left in the game Franco Harris for 104 yards 38 times in his career fifty-eight time horsie was third and one on the San Francisco 34 the great thing about Jimmy brownie made it look so easy Grossman in motion and Bradshaw under some heat got away on a safety blitz throws it to Grossman who is knocked down at about the 37 and they lost yardage on the play the Blitz by Hicks almost got Bradshaw in the past complete for a - it's feast or famine when you blitz your guess rider you guessed wrong on this particular play the defense gets right there you see number 22 Hicks the safety man blissing on the play Terry was lucky to get the ball off at all but when he did why the defense recovered very nicely every great number 21 makes the tackle and of course where had they gained they would have picked up a first down now its fourth and three thirty-six and Bradshaw go on for the first down and he's going to be hit flags on the play he got away from Lawrence pillars but he missed the intended receiver and that was coming out of the backfield the Bradshaw trying to find Russell Davis and pillars hit him and the penalty will be against Pittsburgh [Music] Loren's pillars number 65 a six-year man out of Alcorn enm was the guy who bursts through to ruin that play for Pittsburgh after the safety blitz it's loaded number 73 on the offense holding refused first down the Craig woefully is guilty of the infraction it still didn't slow up pillars Pittsburgh gives up the football with a minute and seven seconds and a timeout down on the field Bob Frederick indicating official timeout where it is first in ten San Francisco on San Francisco's 37 and the 49ers leading 17 to 14 with San Francisco leading Pittsburgh 1714 and most important San Francisco has the ball burst in 10x 37 and it's Walt Easley who gets out to about the 45 yard line with Thomas and him [Music] well you really have to get bill Washington's coaching staff a lot of credit they've done a super job with this team of bringing it along and and the fact that they could come into Pittsburgh and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers are still not over yet but it looks like they're going to win this game but the impressive thing about the team is the fact that they've done such a wonderful job on defense they've really been outstanding you know San Francisco did not commit a turnover last week and during its 32 years they had never played two consecutive games without a turnover they had two turnovers today but their winning is to one that is killing them now uncle by Frank Collard recovered by Carlton Williamson the first half that gave San Francisco an additional three points and those three points now the difference in the game yes and of course the fact that the Pittsburgh had good feel a purty on several occasions in the first half and didn't take advantage of it that always comes back to haunt you in this particular case it's doing exactly that because Pittsburgh did not take advantage of the situation and for that reason our behind in this game 17 to 14 was 48 seconds left and you know despite the fact Franco Harris has rushed for 105 yards and he will deservedly get a lot of Florence it should be remembered that it was Franco Harris who fumbled inside the 25-yard line in the first half but was recovered by Eric Wright and that was another piercing turnover that shot down the Pittsburgh Steelers today yeah the other thing that has to impress you is the fact that this 49er team have really expressed a lot of poise a lot of confidence even an adversity they didn't panic they just kept on doing their thing and at this time of the game lead in 1714 Burke Steelers are faced with a very unhappy thought as Terry Bradshaw chews on today they will lose to an NFC team at home for the first time in ten years December 1971 last-second miracle and it is Walt easier to the flag on the play easily picking up the first down and then of course allow the interpretation of the play so 14 straight wins by the Steelers against the NFC at home coming to an end defense offside so a young San Francisco ballclub is going to be seven and two will continue to have a two-game lead over Atlanta and at least a two-game lead over the Rams who played Detroit a little later number 95 off side first down [Music] on the 49-yard line and they're just eatin out the clock we have 41 seconds left we'd like to alert our viewers in Dallas st. Louis in Detroit areas the National Football League requires us to leave this game at 4:00 p.m. so you can see full coverage of your home team's game we'll continue to update you on this game as it comes to a conclusion and we are rapidly approaching that 41 seconds left in the game and for Joe Montana what a moment the kid from Ringgold high school and Monongahela comes home he has 40 to 50 people here we understand on his past list and in his first visit ever to Three Rivers because as he said I was too busy playing baseball to come here in the summer he has come here in the fall and survived two tremendous interceptions for Pittsburgh that could have shattered a lesser heart the one by Blount for a touchdown the one by Lampert that led Pittsburgh out the front yeah a lesser lesser quarterback could have gone right in the tank and let it bother him for the rest of the game but it didn't look like it bothered him along at all he came right back and threw the ball very well and threw it very much like he always did of course I like the number he wears too that's a number of our quarterback Lenny Dawson so Joe Montana with three timeouts with a three point lead he has the ball with 41 seconds left and he has his second and 12 he's not gonna do very much with it easily and patent and Solomon just kind of surround it and the clock continues to run down and oppose it not much Pittsburgh can do about it they've expended their timeouts 31 seconds 30 seconds and counting so this game is for all intents and purposes what a year for San Francisco beating the Rams in Dallas in Green Bay and now knocking off the Pittsburgh Steelers yes that's really an incredible feat on the part of that team and again I think the big difference is we talked about it earlier the big difference we have been the super jab the defense is done and they played very smart intelligent football offensively and that's what he been the difference our heartiest congratulations to bill wall to the young San Francisco 49ers condolences to Chuck Noll and the Pittsburgh Steelers who won Monday and that might very well have taken a little something out of him although the Steeler record coming back after Monday's was 12 and four until they fell on their haircuts today so the final score the 49ers led 10 nothing at halftime the Steelers led 14 to 10 at the end of the third quarter and then the 49ers scoring in the fourth quarter and that was the difference to turn it around San Francisco 17 the Steelers Pittsburgh scoring twice in the third quarter on a interception by Bob and then the set up interception by Lambert all right thanks to executive producer Terry O'Neill for all he is done today and to senior producer Charles H Milton the third mr. Roberts tenor and to our director Larry Cavallino so she had producer Paul Arndt and to everybody who worked so hard and long loose cannon
