ass credit what's the most outrageous wedding request you have received short background future husband and I are in the US and his whole family lives overseas our wedding will be in the town where we live and I'm very excited to celebrate with all our loved ones his mom has raging baby rabies and no discernible interest in learning any sort of American wedding customs or traditions and just today meet a baffling list of requests in no particular order she wants to buy the jewellery for my wedding day before I've even picked out my dress I'm a pretty laid-back bride but this just won't do she wants us to ask everyone for cash since it's so embarrassing and humiliating to have a registry available we're your guests can just see what you'd like to receive the horror she would like to stay in our apartment for a few days after the wedding after we've left for our honeymoon with her husband and her sister and maybe some nieces and nephews who knows surely this won't be a problem because it's family traveling all this way for us so we can just give them our place right it's no trouble at all for us to leave our small apartment guests ready the literal day after we get married and leave it and who knows how many people's hands for an indeterminate amount of time Thanks to everyone who responded it feels awesome to be validated in such a big way I genuinely don't think future mother-in-law means ill-will or two boundary stomp but I am just not willing to cater to her whims on my wedding day future husband and I had drafted an email to send to his parents explaining that yes we will be having a gift registry as it is customary in our culture but it won't be formally posted anywhere so only those who know to ask will know about it I also included a few links for house rentals nearby and explained that they would be more comfortable with space to stretch out and that they should consider booking something soon let it be known that the last time they stayed with us for a few days his mother wanted actual closet space in my actual closet no no no we did not have any fancy events planned she got a few hangers to hang outside the closet future mother-in-law responded by backtracking her earlier statement about fears about the registry and saying we can do what we want not that I need anybody's permission to do what I want with my wedding but thanks anyway she also said they plan to just stay in the hotel like everyone else and they don't know how many members will be traveling it so they just won't book anything until they know for sure I think this is setting up a scenario where they could be Sol in terms of finding a place to stay so I went ahead and booked a little two-bedroom house for a few days within walking distance of downtown and the wedding venue if they don't need it I'm sure somebody will the bridesmaids and I can get ready there or I can give it to my sister who will be celebrating her wedding anniversary or whatever I'm considering it an insurance policy against his parents needing to stay in our place because they didn't plan ahead future husband and I are looking into premarital counseling because the fact that he thought it was totally cool to hand over our apartment while we're on honeymoon to his extended family is baffling and I think he's a little peeved at me for not bending over backwards for his parents we definitely have some stuff to work through I'd like to say I won't be back but I have a feeling this is going to be a long journey my best friend since grade school is getting married in September of next year him and his soon-to-be wife have been to probably a dozen of our shows and his fiancee is a superfan of ours we perform a modern reimagining of 1920s swing music mixed with a little country it's upbeat and people love to dance to it it's not my friends type of music but his fiancee loves us anyways a few months ago when they got engaged I was expecting a call from my friend asking me to be a groomsman that call came but with one caveat he wanted me to perform at his wedding if there are any other musicians out there you know how much time and setup go into a show for me to perform I would barely be a part of the wedding all my time and focus would be on putting on a good show the only problem is that I was super excited to actually attend the wedding he's getting married in our hometown and I was looking forward to catching up with old classmates and friends that I hadn't seen in years between set up performing and take down I would barely have any time for that so I turned down his requests thinking it wouldn't be a big deal and according to him it wasn't until he called me back the next day his fiancee was so annoyed like bridezilla angry and now my friend is annoyed too having taken her side he's reached out several times since then demanding me to reconsider I don't think he's actually angry at me but he's acting as a blunt force object trying to appease his fiancee I'm afraid he's going to reconsider asking me to be a groomsman and I've now had several of our mutual friends tell me and being an idiot by not performing I don't really know if I'm the one that sucks here I had a couple and her mother come to see me by appointment to plan wedding music for their forthcoming church ceremony each time I demonstrate a potential processional on the organ the bride and groom liked it but the bride's mother objected and asked to hear something different when asked what her idea of something different might be she had no ideas the situation got more and more tense as the groom and bride's mother argued finally the mother said listen I'm paying for this wedding and you'll do it my way and that's the end of it in an effort to bring harmony I said to the mother it's the couple's wedding not yours or mine let them make the choices they like and I'll provide music at no charge so the question of who's paying for it is no longer a factor that solved the problem instantly but the groom left glaring at his future mother-in-law probably wondering what he was getting into for the long term to my surprise the best man came to see me at the organ on the day of the ceremony and gave me an envelope containing double the normal amount this happened a few months ago and it still sticks in my mind as one of the rudest things I have a guest do at a wedding I work a side job for a well-known caterer in my city the caterer has been in business a long time and has worked alongside the bride's wedding planner and florist for years I was asked to work as a server for this one wedding where the centerpieces and decor were very intense the florist that was hired to do the decor bouquets and the centerpieces is very popular and sought after florists because she also designs the table settings decor and does beautiful floral garlands and puts the whole thing together at the venue she is one of the most creative florists I have ever seen and she has a long waiting list for brides hoping to get her to design the flowers and decor for their wedding I have worked at numerous weddings that she designed the decor for the reception and ceremony and she always does an amazing job she also does these elaborate floral hanging arrangements too that hang from the ceilings day of the wedding I was working on setting the tables per her design and she was setting up the flowers and decorations these two women walk into the reception site and one loudly exclaims oh my god what are you doing we both turned to look at the two women and they start rearranging the flowers decor and table settings they start ripping everything down and moving ever around one lady was muttering in a super rude tone I mean I see what the florist was going for but this is awful we stood there shocked and the wedding planner saw what was happening and tried to put a stop to it but the two guests would not stop it became a full-blown argument the florist is such a sweet woman that she didn't know what to do she stood there with her mouth wide open as the guests and the wedding planner are arguing over the decor it got so loud that the mother of the bride comes out to see what's going on the wedding planner kept trying to keep everything in hushed tones and wanted to defuse the situation the mother of the bride asked what was going on and the two guests started complaining that the decor was not a good fit for the wedding they complained that it ruined the ambience of the whole reception the worst part the mother of the bride let them have at the tables I don't know the identity of the two guests but the mother was familiar enough with them to let them destroy the already beautifully decorated wedding in all my years working at weddings I have never seen anything like it and the guests did a crap job fixing the decor I never did find out if the bride noticed or cared not a wedding planner but my uncle was a nightmare and behaved like an absolute crap stain at my cousin's wedding he was father of the groom Zilla first he decided he didn't like the bride and he didn't want his son to marry her because she wasn't bowing to every single one of his wishes for her wedding thank God for her because my cousin is the nicest person ever and would have let him push him over if it wasn't done my uncle's way he wasn't going nice attitude he was told not to come so many times we lost track my aunt almost left him seriously because of how horrible he was being she called my mom sobbing many times saying she just couldn't do it be with him anymore because of how he was acting my uncle wanted the wedding at his favorite hangout and the reception at his favorite restaurant or he wasn't coming when they showed him the seating chart he switched everyone around while they went to lunch the poor bride was in tears trying to fix everything she had spent weeks if not months meticulously planning instead of having immediate family at tables 1 & 2 bride and groom he switched it so that he and his best friends were at table 1 and pushed the rest of us grandma his siblings my cousins - table 3 how can you push your very old mother to table 3 when she been the one begging for us to get married for years that was the one thing they couldn't budge him on anyway he almost ruined the entire wedding drew out the very beautiful ceremony and reception he loudly commented on how it would have been so much better if they'd done it his way he tried to pull that crap with me looking for sympathy and support and I had to say something I couldn't take it anymore I said your son the first one in our family is getting married this is their day aren't you happy for them and he was quiet for like two seconds before he turned to his obnoxious friends for validation they were crappy too the wedding was perfect you could see all the blood sweat and tears bride and groom poured into all the little details if they'd done it the way he wanted it would have been the world's worst wedding his wedding speech was terrible he was drunker than a skunk and rambled through the whole thing talking about himself meanwhile the bride's father gave the most beautiful speech I cried not really ruining the wedding but it certainly killed the vibe leading up to the wedding I asked my brother to be my best man at my wedding brother and I Catholic girlfriend Epis Koppel he said yes months after saying yes he comes to us and tells us that he can't be the best man or even be at the ceremony because his priest tells him it will be a mortal sin for him to be a witness to the ceremony because I am NOT asking for dispensation and getting married in an epic okay understood sad but if that's the way you see it we'll deal with it at this point I asked my best friend to be my best man and all is good or so we thought a couple months before the wedding my brother starts a campaign calling my entire family and telling them they will be committing a mortal sin if they attend my wedding and explaining how my children will be bastards in the eyes of God and anyone who even sleeps under the same roof as us will be committing a sin WTF I find all this out through cousins and friends and am in complete shock luckily I have a few cool family and they all show up for the wedding everyone had out what the hell is wrong with your brother question on the day of the wedding but it was a great time with an open bar and live band here's the kicker of it all my mom is Catholic my pop is Epis Koppel no divorces or any unhappiness just your normal suburban family I have a story I can contribute my wedding wasn't really ruined but it almost was my and I still haven't figured it out everything was going according to plan aside from the stress of planning of course and a few weeks from the wedding the owner of the venue was supposed to contact us and tell us the exact total to be paid when he didn't my husband called him up to ask how much we owed and the guy says nothing you canceled the wedding what after some back and forth they figured out that someone who was not my husband had called the venue claimed to be my husband used his name and contact number and canceled the wedding the only people who would have access to that information is maybe one of the owners employees or someone in my husband's family we tried to get the phone number from the service provider but for obvious reasons they did not disclose wedding coordinator here the couple that never paid their final balance for the reception I'm a day of event coordinator so I'm not part of the arrangements only handle the details to make sure everything goes smoothly this was one of the rare times it didn't once the ceremony started I headed over to the reception hall to oversee the setup only to find out the couple paid the deposit but never paid the balance about half of the total cost about $30,000 the catering hall was refusing to hold the reception until they got their money in cash no personal checks allowed it was a Sunday before a bank holiday and while most commercial banks would have been fine their local bank was not open until that Tuesday slightly panicking I called the main coordinator who was still at the church with the couple to try to figure this out the older brother tried to help by trying to get money from relatives but they were obviously short of the sum needed we were at the point where guests were starting to arrive after going back and forth the catering manager said they would hold the cocktail hours since the deposit covered that when the couple arrived at the groom the brother and my lead coordinator met with the manager and they basically offered their money box along with whatever payment they were able to round up to hold us ransom until they made the payment the reception went on as planned and once everything was set I broke my work rule and had a strong drink my mom's parents wanted this show we elaborate wedding for my parents so they could show off to their friends it was 1980 my folks are both super down-to-earth and just wanted a nice dinner basic dress and a nice party with their friends they were super broke college students so my mom's parents offered to pay for the wedding but then use the fact that were paying for it to make it the wedding that they wanted the wedding ended up being the super stuck-up formal affair with the city brass band performing at the church even worse there was no dancing allowed at the reception you know to keep it classy and to top it all off exclusive to her family only my dad's side and all their friends weren't invited they had a backyard barbecue instead while my parents sat in the stuffy reception hall with my grandparents boring old friends needless to say my parents didn't have much fun and probably really regret letting my mom's parents pay for it not a wedding planner but a catered weddings for a long time one wedding the bride and groom picked out the worst pink and coral blue tablecloths and used them both but later it looked bad that doesn't pertain to the story I just want to set the tone that the room was uncomfortable to begin with so the couple apparently decided to have a fun routine as their first dance neither of them was very coordinated and the fact that they were both horribly overweight did not help their cause they looked like a couple that met on reddit the two of them go up in front of the room and try to do a dance that even if performed well would have been the cringy esteem it was not performed well it was a compilation of a bunch of songs that I'm assuming they got online from a cheer groups routine because you could hear clapping in the background but it was certainly not from the guests the brad kind of knew what moves and what song was next but the groom had absolutely no idea he would just start doing whatever she was doing five seconds after she did it it was the most uncomfortable I have ever been in my life afterward no one clapped they all just looked around as if they were unsure if they all saw the same thing thankfully the bride and groom did not seem to care they instead began inviting people up to the stage so they could teach them the dance that they themselves did not know and do it again I was a bridesmaid at a wedding where the dress code was black tie optional the guest in question was an old family friend of the groom and she was probably in her mid-20s while her dress was not overly formal or risque it was very glamorous and attention-grabbing it's hard to describe but she was wearing a sparkly blue cocktail dress that was probably designer and stiletto heels that were absolutely designer her hair and makeup was also soap perfect it must have been done by a professional honestly she looked like she walked off the red carpet of the movie premiere she was certainly grabbing attention during the cocktail hour many many guests none of whom know her approached her to rave about her outfit the bride noticed and while she didn't say anything I could tell she was bothered by the split attention at the reception I ran into her in the bathroom and made a comment like nice outfit but who are you trying to impress here you're just a random guest she told me to mind my business and she laughed I retold this story back at the table and while a couple bridesmaids were on my side some thought I was too harsh it was my best pals sister's wedding I was asked to tend the open bar no money to exchange hand just serve drinks and keep an eye on the liquor half way into the reception folks were getting awfully drunk probably because I was pouring them incredibly stiff drinks hurray for free drinks at some point something got stirred up I think was an ex-boyfriend vs. groom kind of thing I didn't know I was tending the bar but fists were thrown then chairs then bedlam I did what I could to protect the liquor some older guy who had been feeding very stiff drinks all night came rambling over to my bar and asked for another I poured he shook his head as screams fists and food flew all around kids these days I concurred and poured myself a stiff one when the fighting settled down the hall was a complete mess the bride was in tears everything was destroyed I decided the party was over I laughed it may have been an awful wedding for them but it was a memorable one for me no other wedding was as eventful I think my friend's wedding was probably her wedding planners horror story over an hour into the meeting the groom-to-be still hasn't shown up the bride called him up all annoyed and yelled if this is your attitude to our wedding planning maybe we shouldn't get married the groom yelled you're right canceled the wedding it wasn't a joke they actually broke up only a bunch of deposits had been paid and it was split almost 50/50 by both families apparently they can't agree on who needs to pay who back and neither wants to back down so both families decided they'll both have a party instead of a wedding instead the wedding planner ended up planning to separate Christmas parties for two feuding families in the same Ballroom people showed up out of morbid curiosity and apparently it was so awkward [Music]
