Jeff from home renovision today I'm going to show you how I DIY my own roof that's right I scoured the internet for some really good information and I put together my own DIY system for you guys so you can do Roofing projects on your own home just like I did with my shed cheers recommend you watch the house wrap video okay understanding the WRB system on this home Wind and Rain barriers key this is a 2x4 it's not a facial board it's actually part of my roof system okay this is my my how should we say my sop buildout okay so I have that can come up to this point and we'll put a face aboard that'll cover all of that joint I'm going to be sealing my Ridge joint and my detail here for my sopit we're going to put down that be tape it's kind of like the deck joist tape okay if you can't find it it works amazing it'll waterproof this system before we get started with the rest of the roof here we go guys so yeah we're using joy statee for decks it's a fantastic little product we're just going to line it out measure it off give or take then we got to peel the backing off of this okay okay now what I'm doing is I'm just taping my seam between my 2x4 and my sheathing I'm just wrapping it for a good measure in case there's ever any water under there it always looks for the path of lease resistance this will make sure that it goes around the corner instead of underneath there we go okay now remember ah when you're doing a roof my system does not involve using metal edges my problem with it is it's aluminum and whenever you get a lot of heat it tends to expand and then you get cupping between the nails all right and if it starts to lift a little bit then water can find its way in and then your sheathing is exposed so I like to use a different system where I'm going to have my underlayment extending a little bit past and then my first row of shingles is going to extend a little bit past so and The Heat Of The Sun it kind of curls down a little bit all right and it kind of protects your wood but because it's still exposed and I'm going to have a black fascia and black roof we use the beal tape all across the front edge as well okay that way everything is going to be black and black and black and you're not going to see any exposed wood and I'm not going to encourage any kind of broading going on there okay and safety note don't leave spare Fasteners on the roof that's a great way to slip and fall all right [Music] w here we are that's just cheap insurance okay now this detail is going to give me two things one it's kind of like a poor man's ice and water Shield two it gives me the Aesthetics I'm looking for I think to end from the beginning sometimes you got to do things a little creative right like I'm not making huge soft overhang it's not traditional I'm not putting in uh not even going to put in a East off it's just a shed we're going to keep it simple but I do want to have a nice detail there because I don't want to go from a dark siding to a black aluminum to a black roof and have that Brown Line sitting there all right so now I've got my my ladder block back in place we're going to get on with nailing down the felt now we start putting a roof together this is going to be fun okay guys uh Tire paper this is roof paper reinforced fiberglass the idea here is uh every time there's a nail penetration this is kind of like a self-sealing system okay it does uh gives you grip it also has lines on it so it helps you to stay Square when you're putting your roof on okay this is usually a two person job now I'm starting to regret that I don't have matth through here want to get over my be tape okay oh for Pete's sake I got a bee after me run it right to right off my edge here a little bit it'll be easier to trim it later roll it out a little bit there we go and there comes the windy here we go come on baby keep it square there we go okay woo that's not bad I mean for a DIY roof really the goal here is to make sure that uh you keep sending water the right way as a priority [Music] I like a few extra Staples so the paper's not sliding underneath your feet right I mean at the end of the day it's still only paper between you and the roof it'd be nice it had a little bit of stick okay here we go ah I think it's time for me to bring some roofing material up here all right right okay well guys let's just talk about the tools that we're going to use today for putting on our roof uh standard inch and quarter roof Nails okay um these come on a coil to go in this machine and this is awesome I've been using this nailer since the beginning of this project every opportunity I get opens up nice and simple you run your loader in here all right lock and go Lock and Load we use this to install a fence and if you missed that video we'll put a link in the video description for you standard operating procedure today we're going to have a knife and we're not using a regular W knife we're using hook blades there snap off hook blades these are amazing because they give you the ability to cut your material right and you can run the tip of this up against the edge of your roof and you'll know where you are right helps keep your lines nice and straight and it's a hell of a lot safer to be pulling with the hook than to be using a regular straight blade all right now I am not a roofer in case you're wondering I don't do Roofing today's video was just about me doing a roofing system that'll work for a DIY so if you are a roofer uh feel free to get in the comments chirp a little bit have some fun but uh specifically um give us proper information okay on the program in the process I going to be following a standard installation for five nails per shingle we're going to be starting off my shingles I'm using a three tab shingle in Reverse so I got a nice solid Edge create an overhang and a nice straight line and then we're going to go with architectural shingles after that probably going to be uh uh cutting the shingles uh 8 in increments so I can step it up and that's pretty much the basics of it all it's all about being in the right place at the right time getting the first row or two on um being really careful not to walk off the edge of the roof okay that's that's the focus today just don't fall off the roof Jeff at the end of the day guys architectural shingle with the with the right number of nails In the Heat of the summer and this is why you really want to be building this when you're you've got the heat of the summer in your favor so do it in the spring if you like but try to avoid doing Roofing at the end of the Fall I'm not a big fan because it really takes the heat to melt all that stuff together now I'm also going to bring my knee pads up there with me I'm probably going to do a little bit of crawling around and uh wish me luck yeah you're not supposed to climb a ladder like this I know I know I know but I'm at my house so I don't have to follow the ministry rules ah there we go okay first thing is first first sip on my knees like I said first I'm starting off with three tab shingles now I picked up my roofing shingles at the Home Hardware local building store around here they carry just about everything it's black on black two-tone let's just take a quick look this is architectural shingle it's Lam layered laminate okay so it's it's more than just one piece of roofing gives a lot more strength Against the Wind versus a traditional three tab shingle which is just one ply okay so what we're doing here is we're going to use the three tab with is cheaper because I need a straight edge so instead of putting it on like traditional roofing tiles you're going backwards to great our start all right now I'm going to cut this stuff here now here's my Edge I'm intentionally making my shingle about a quar inch past the edge on all these sides I'm going to nail it in that's probably more than I need but hey when you're using the automatic tool it's really easy to use more Nails than you want I'm also overlapping this corner here going flush there give myself another quarter inch overlap here okay all right always thinking overlapping following the the course of water all right you're starting to see the wisdom behind the pitch of the roof that I chose here right never a bad idea to have a nice gentle slope especially as a DIY [Music] all right go we just line that up get our overhang nice check for my overhang that's a little bit more than I wanted here we [Music] go all right so here we go shingle number one okay now again oh I got to let's skip my knife here first okay now yeah the hook blade Cuts Like butter just awesome so again going to go to flush overhang about an eighth to a quarter in both directions there we go okay now we're going to be doing a step system okay so I'm going to think of it like a about an an 8 in piece I'm going to cut off all right and so then you can see when that one's installed the joint's going to be right here okay so what I want to do is have an nailing pattern that never puts a nail 8 in off the edge that's all you really got to consider here all right so my nailing pattern is going to be here that's 8 in a little bit past it all right so that when I put my next seat on there that's my line okay and I want to bring this shingle right to this Edge boom again that's going to be the 8 in skip it want to go five okay you can cut it in advance you can cut off 8 in then 16 and then whatever or you can just once it's hang over like a hot knife through butter here all right and uh save these you'll be able to use them later all right woo already I'm seeing the advantage of these lines my shingle is lining up right on the top of this thing on the second row which is super handy take a look at the back of this there's three glue strips here okay which is amazing so the In The Heat Of The Sun this will adhere to the one underneath this is my nailing strip and then that has another glue strip that's why this stuff is so bloody awesome okay okay now I've got a a line here I'm going to see if we can line this up if it's going to work yeah fantastic that'll help get you square all right oh dear Lord that corner's gone to junk we're going to save all these shingles for the other end okay wow okay get my overhang now I know all the roofers out there you're going to do five six layers of Step so every time you move you're putting five shingles down it's more efficient I'm just trying to be really uh focused on not falling off the roof just just get get my butt away from the edge right out of the gate here you go that's my next shingle right there okay beautiful 16 18 I'm using my leftovers here now man that's perfect okay hey all right using my off cut yeah you know what that's not as straight a line as I wish I cut that's going to look okay though all right maybe we will use it for a guy that doesn't do Roofing I'm finding it weird how quick you get comfortable up here yeah and I'm on that line again on the paper interesting okay well I ain't going to win no speed Roofing contest that's for sure at the end of the day if you got a small project like this and you keep the pitch of your roof nice and Ford 12 or under this works [Music] [Music] what [Music] wow so the guy at the hardware store said each one of these uh bundles does 32 squ ft he wasn't he wasn't kidding so one two yeah three aside with a little bit of waste that's uh that's pretty exact my God so while I got over to the corner here out the corner of my eye I see a nail sticking out I'm like whoops not supposed to see a nail I missed a piece so before we go any further we're going to fix this let's take a look so I got a nail here and I got a shingle that's going to go up past that point okay so I'm going to get underneath underneath the nail and try to lift that out son of a g didn't work a anyway well now I need a hammer I don't have a hammer here anything can be used as a hammer okay just going to shingle in and then we trim all right now where not too bad and this when it stops working snap it off and throw it right in the garbage B we're close to it anyway now you can see I'm getting up to my Ridge here I need to put in one more layer of shingle okay and then I've got a huge gap here now to finish it off I'm going to use the three tab shingle all right I just go through this detail and then we're going to cap it like this okay now the cap isn't big enough when I cut it into thirds to make it down to that line so I am going to put another row of shingles on here at this point and at this point trim off my excess and then I will add my cap cuz it's going to look something like like that when it's done it's a crying shame but what do you do if there's a better option there let me know cuz I'm thinking maybe on the backside where no one's looking I'll cheat maybe I'll go 6040 get my shingle to the right size here we'll have to get the other side done first and uh and see what the best way to finish that off is I'll keep you up there all right good I'm nice and sticky on here today that's nice for all right still got a full charge on his battery it says not bad [Music] so what I've got here is I've got a shingle that's starting and then I'm running the top over the ridge that'll act like a SE it's just going to look like hell so the way we're going to finish is we take the three tabs now and we're going to cap this but I'm going to run this instead of 50/50 I'm going to go 60/40 so on the front side of the building I'm going right to the shingle line and the back side I've got an odd line but it's on the back side of the building so if you're going to have an ugly spot have it on the back of the [Music] house [Music]
