hey everybody hope you're all doing well my name is steven and this is the story time channel we've got some malicious compliance stories so let's jump right into our first story of the day by ib check cash app work free for me this is an incident that happened at my previous job it's a long one so i ask for your patience i worked as an associate applications engineer which is basically an innuendo for you do whatever we ask you to do however it was my first job which i secured during the campus placements of our college where i graduated in b-tech and the income was pretty decent so i accepted it being a fresher enthusiastic about getting recognized in the corporate world i was doubly interested to do beyond what's necessary because there is a lot of competition in the i.t industry in our country however enter the typical evil manager we will call him dp which might or might not be the abbreviation of his name this person is a sum of everything you don't want in a manager bossy egotistical mind-numbingly picky on trivial matters incompetent unable to change his point of view in the dynamic world of computer science so on and so forth a couple of months into the job i already realized i wouldn't probably want to spend a lot of my initial corporate years in this job because in addition to the manager it was quite boring as opposed to what was promised to us pre-hiring it required us to switch off our brains and keep manually clicking at a software until we get our output even though automation was possible and more efficient the managers were typically old comfortably only with the way things used to work a decade and a half ago at first i did several things which i thought was really beneficiary to the company for instance i had to stay late one day because i was supposed to meet a friend near my office so i used the extra hours to code a small automation code to ease a particular manual work for the developers of our project i didn't expect to be applauded for it but i also did not expect to be shouted at by dp because i was doing unnecessary stuff later a senior of the project i was in talked with me and said why do you want to use your extra time for the company use it for your personal benefit do certifications for your future nobody cares around here about your sincere efforts to make the project smoother which i found out later to be shockingly true now to the setting i was working in another project under the same manager with another project partner who we will call banshee the wailing spirit banshee because his name rhymes with it quite contrary to the name i gave him he is actually a silent and sincere person who worked in the company for four years under managers and never complained this will be important dp set the deadline for the project as january 2020 because the newly promoted head in the u.s announced a brand new project and it would be given to any manager who would finish the project at hand fast the project had around 3-4 months to finish which was an impossible deadline to catch clear even to a fresher like me dp started becoming greedy putting hour-long meets exactly after the working hours are done to extract more from engineers moving his workplace closer to mind to swoop in and complain about anything you could find etc anyway we agreed work started piling up we started working as late as 10 in the night three hours more than required but there's no rule against it and like i said the it is increasingly competitive and a substitute who would be willing to sacrifice personal life would not be difficult to find one day i reached home at 11 20 in the night had to eat and sleep late making me come to the office 15 minutes late the next day for which i got an hour of bullying from dp regarding punctuality i put up with it complained to hr once or twice but never expected anything to happen and nothing did now the company releases a hackathon event for all the employees in my country in which teams could voluntarily come together start a new idea discuss how it would be useful to the company here dp gets a brilliant idea he messages both banshee and i that we will submit the exact same project we were currently doing in the hackathon his intention hackathon happens during the weekend which means banshee and i needed to submit 16 hours of unpaid work over the weekend to the same project which we were supposed to be paid for he messages us about the hackathon which i assume he's just asking us to participate in the hackathon here is however where he makes a small mistake owing to the greed his message reads i am submitting our project name if you have any queries let me know i knew instantly that he had made a mistake i start my malicious compliance or rather malicious silence i didn't actually open the chat but i saw it in the notification so he wouldn't know i actually saw it i wait i do not open the chat and i continue working making him assume i don't have a problem with it he assumes so and gives our names as participating then in the evening i put on an innocent face and shockingly tell him i'm not free this weekend i can't make it he is furious calls me to the meeting room and bellows about why i didn't tell him sooner i didn't read your message i was working on the thing you gave us this morning i gave you several hours to reply well the thing you gave us took time doesn't matter we gave our name we have to participate you gave the name and i never gave you consent i told you to approach me if you have any queries silence is not consent he didn't have a reply to that after the meet banshee told me he complained too for the first time in four years which shook dp's authority i didn't attend the event which didn't go well for our team which gave a bad name to the manager dp decided to squeeze more from me as a revenge i politely resign after the hackathon incident this was an unexpected bombshell although i was a fresher i spent months understanding the project and developed several small automations in python programming language and they weren't properly explained because dp never gave me time for proper documentation it was fun to see the egotistical manager swallow his ego and try to plead me to stay but i had no such intentions i was already trying to shift my focus towards artificial intelligence i quit in january right before the deadline months later during lockdown i finished a couple of certifications in ai secured internships which helps me with my masters got a good ielts score and secured my future in ai and the project still hadn't finished the upcoming project from us was given to another manager and last i heard the manager himself had to do the technical aspect of the project which i previously had to do since lockdown seriously affected the availability of employees he didn't understand python much either and couldn't properly use automation tools i developed i can picture him now a grown man sitting in front of the softwares clicking and waiting for them to respond for eight hours a day for months this story kind of has me thinking if there was a job opportunity that you know would help you develop your skills and probably help you long term in the field you want to enter would you sacrifice long hours of work with probably not adequate levels of pay to achieve that let me know if that's something you think you would have done in the comments down below our next story is by the unpolitical you get what you pay for i had my own company where i had an excellent staff of 18 people we did service maintenance on specific types of heavy machines to several locations we were contracted by the company that makes them this was part of their pitch when selling the items that they had a free unlimited amount of repairs and service calls for the lifetime of the machine i had previous experience in this field and i actually helped them get into some very well-known companies as a consultant i helped install them after installation they wanted me to temporarily service them until they could find staff so i gave them my rate card and they paid it it was not cheap and it's a very specialized feel that i spent way too long going to school and giving my life up to gain work experience in also anyone in this service maintenance field gets paid very well too all my workers were overpaid and not one person quit for the entire six years their business got to be so big that i had to hire people and i had this temporary position for just over six years about the last year and a half my team took out some of the machines from the smaller companies as the machines never really used them as they broke down often and they were a huge burden because they were on lease the manufacturer got them back we all started to somewhat talk about what was happening we discovered that machines made in the last few years were cheaply made they were using a lot of out-of-country internal cuts to keep things cheap and more money for them they didn't run the same the fixes were not helping we went back to the manufacturer and kept telling them what we were finding on site they were disbelieving us we told them to come out they would not we told them that our time was taking twice as long to repair still they didn't believe us and told it was an accurate reporting and we were gouging them as a result they lost every small business owner and the larger ones were not far behind so the manufacturer told me that when our contract was up we were going to be done it was fine i was working too darn much both on site and as a boss and i was exhausted the day comes to hand and transfer all the parts and extra equipment and we were all really kind in helping out with moving everything to their trucks we were all very jovial and genuinely happy that the manufacturer was going to take the service repair and maintenance in-house because we felt for that last year they were not hearing us frankly i think we were all done at the point of course these were a bunch of sour pusses and barely got their fancy long sleeve buttoned up with cufflink shirts dirty i should point out that the manufacturer who was just three owners that could never agree they were insistent that the machines better be in the exact state as when they arrived so we did we went to each site a week prior and removed all the small repairs that held things together like duct taping a small hole in the back that when lights hit it it shows an error yeah we had no idea why they had designed an achilles heel to shut down a machine with standard everyday beams of light but we used to call it the star wars hole since they didn't believe us that we had to do these small little things to hold the machines together we just removed it and let them figure it out themselves so we cleaned all of our little machine hacks that kept the machines running and left so we wiped our hands up with them and had a goodbye party that lasted all weekend it was so much fun and i enjoyed putting it together about two weeks later i got a call from one of the owners who whined to me that they couldn't keep their in-house staff on sites because repairs were taking too long they were confused tired and they were refusing to do that much work and every machine had a problem that they couldn't resolve in time and that all customers were complaining so they asked me just me back to work for them he offered me minimum wage after laughing for way too long i said no as an update which is now about seven months later he called me today and begged me to help out with all the major companies except for one are backing out and they want to rid themselves of the lease he wants me to help him hold on to this last company see one of the things they did is that they started to charge for service calls which was free and unlimited prior no one is happy with them at all and i said no i feel like if the people you relied on for over five years was all of a sudden saying something was wrong with the manufacturing and that the repairs necessary are way harder than before it probably should be a concern you would want to research instead of assuming they were trying to gouge you otherwise they would have tried that over the last 5 years that they had been doing it right our next story is by blover fish kitchen gets beat root makeover this happened yesterday to my partner and she is still laughing and mad at the same time she's not on reddit so i'll write it with her permission as if she was writing it i'm a carer 46 year old female in the uk for an elderly woman 86 year old female and son 60 year old male who live together both have severe arthritis and mobility problems but the son is more active than his mother they also have a large garden where i help the sun with the gardening i have a very small garden due to having an extension built for this i get a fair share of all the fruit and vegetables during the year although we have had restrictions due to the big c i am classed as an essential worker and have been able to do a lot more work on the garden than usual and we've had excellent weather this year the day before yesterday i picked a lot of vegetables including beetroot potatoes and carrots after taking a small share i left the rest in the kitchen i told them to leave them there and i will sort them out tomorrow which is where our story starts now the son doesn't like to be told what to do and is pretty stubborn as he likes to think he's able to still do things around the house even though he is restricted in his movements so yesterday i came in surprise surprise the son had cleaned the beetroot and was putting them in a pressure cooker to cook them before pickling them he is capable of cooking for the both of them but he used to forget he had food on so he used to burn their food often i bought them a pressure cooker as the noise and the short cooking time would keep him concentrated on not burning his food here's where the malicious compliance came in he hadn't cooked beetroot in the pressure cooker before and refused to let me set it up for cooking so to avoid argument i said fine and let him carry on and i carried on with sorting his mother out and a bit of cleaning as well then it happened i was upstairs when i heard a huge bang and a bump on the floor i rushed downstairs to find the sun cooker walls ceiling and everything in a five foot radius from the pressure cooker covered in a lovely shade of beetroot purple i then asked the sun what happened you know pressure cookers only need a small amount of water as it's the steam that cooks not the water well the sun had put the beetroot in the cooker and filled it up with water to stop the beetroot going off he then forgot the drain said water and put the lid and weight on and put them on to cook poor pressure cooker had so much pressure that it blew the safety valve and the weight straight off the lid and dented the ceiling followed by the beetroot stained water i tried my best not to laugh and immediately turned the cooker off as the son and mother who wasn't in the kitchen were still in shock luckily the sun was on the 5 foot edge and didn't get burned and was okay unfortunately for me i will have to clean this mess up as well i went down today and the sun still won't look me in the eye but i still can't stop laughing about his beat rude redecoration in retrospect it helps with the whole burning thing but if somebody is forgetful or is pretty stubborn on using things before actually learning how to use something maybe a pressure cooker wasn't the best idea to let them have and our final story of the day is by m3002 no time to lean no time to clean this happened about 15 years ago when i had a summer job working at a staff canteen there was a bit of food prep work but my main job was washing pots and pans all in all it was a straightforward job not too hard with pleasant colleagues and a good vibe in the kitchen because it was a staff canteen the work was very regular too we didn't have busy days or light days the same amount of food got made every day and the menu didn't vary that much so i always had the same amount of washing up to do when i first arrived i was set on making a great impression by doing the best job possible in my shift i looked at those piles of pots and pans and thought i have more than enough time to get through all of them plus they were covered with burn marks i was sure i could make them shine and when my manager saw how much better everything was looking my extra efforts would be recognized and duly rewarded i will admit i was pretty pleased with myself the first time i finished my pots with 20 minutes to spare not only that the pots and pans were glistening i had them so clean they practically looked new i took a well-deserved breather stepping back to admire my efforts and was pleased to see the manager had noticed as well and was coming over to acknowledge them this was when i was first introduced to the phrase time to lean time to clean the reward for my hard work was to pull out shelving around the kitchen and to clean out behind them this clearly hadn't been done in years and what was found back there was pretty nasty a buildup of dust grime and grease plus whatever odd bits of food slipped through the cracks there was much more heavy lifting doing this job abrasive chemicals and harder scrubbing at the end of the shift the manager pulled me to one side and made clear he was displeased to see me just hanging about and if i ever didn't have enough work to do i was to pull out shelves and get to cleaning them top to bottom funnily enough from that day forward i always had just enough pod washing to fill my shift my timing on cleaning pots to an acceptable but not excellent standard was perfect burn marks returned i sweated less and no more shells got clean at summer's end when my contract was up the manager called me over once again and earnestly thanked me for doing such a good job consistently showing up and working throughout my shift apparently he was used to others in that position being much less reliable glad he got what he wanted but i was a little sad to discover that day that hard work isn't always rewarded and sometimes leaning into low expectations is the best way forward well how do you think the burn marks got there in the first place i suppose it's definitely a harsh truth where if you work very very hard at your low level job a lot of times it's seen as lazy or an opportunity to just pile more and more work on you and really cut down costs in other places because you're just so good at that job although in the end you're not getting any praise any commendations any promotions you're just having to do more work because you're killing yourself which is an unfortunate truth to learn but with that being said that's all the time we have for today so if you have a favorite story of the day let me know which one and why in the comments section down below but besides that if you enjoyed the video please
