okay so we have some good news and some bad news we'll do the bad news first you guys follow an Instagram you might have seen that Marlene passed away she was 14 years old she was my parents cat she was always an outdoor barn cat she became a shop cat until we had the combine in the in the shop because we had some Mouse poison in there so we she basically became a house cat and then she had three little kittens about five weeks ago but there was complications with that where she got fluid on the outside of her lungs which was a complication of heart heart condition so unfortunately being as old as she is she didn't make it and we yeah we had to bury her beside my dog last weekend so we did luckily end up with three little kittens two of them found new homes and this is the new kitten that we're keeping looks exactly like her almost has the same personality as her purrs almost instantly super lovable but is also already becoming a house cat so yeah um that sad note she was a great cat great Mouser we'll miss her but yeah that's the way things go on the upside we did hit 400,000 subs this past weekend which is incredible thank you guys for watching we never thought that anything like that would happen we're enjoying the ride more good news happy to say that we raised $11,000 us for Doctors Without Borders we got more merch coming as well different things we're working with teespring they're actually brokering a deal with flex fit for us because I didn't really like their hats my very particular boatmen hats I like the Flex fits and you guys were asking for some here we go merch and we do this because you guys asked we made a boss garage key tag that says here we go so these are on pre-order just to kind of gauge interest we have to buy a whole pile of them so as long as we can get enough we will sell these and lots of good stuff coming up so yeah let's get into it here we go yeah she she likes being hugged like that yeah this came in a shipping container with 72 seats in it of course I couldn't get the bus going but the bus wasn't a very good shape so I bought the bus it's got some holes in the frame it's got holes in the body and two other safety tips shouldn't have safety bit so I parked the bus out back and just put some parts and stuff in there let's get into it have all the different versions of the Cummins that were in the on road vehicles the VP 44 1998 to 2002 is the most likely to leave you by the side of the road with the newer injectors with higher fuel pressures electronics starting to be involved and the diesels will likely give you an issue but still get you home this one's gonna leave you by the side of the road this engine was in a school bus and if you compare school buses with different engines of that same air you would be comparing it to either a t4 44 II which is the seventh three power stroke in the school bus or the dt 466 is some of them had the inline six and the 3126 caterpillar we've got a video on the cat that caterpillar we're taking that out and putting it into the f-350 so it's only fair that my Silverado gets a school bus engine as well we don't want any animosity between the two we haven't done a video on the dt 466 yet but Kevin's hoping to put a dt 466 in his new project which is gonna be on the bus garage heavy duty so if you haven't subscribed to that channel yet definitely subscribe there to get notifications from when we're releasing videos on there we're separating the heavy equipment from the on-road stuff I just to keep things a little bit more streamlined these 24 valves were also in motorhomes and it really has a lot of work to push that massive motor home down the road especially if you're towing a car trailer with another car in there if you're comparing it to the pickup trucks at the time you'd be looking at like six five diesel and they were around for a while in the GMs by then they figured out most of their issues so that air of the late 90s six fives were actually more reliable than the five nine Cummins BP because that's stupid injection pump and then 2001 the lb7 even though they had their injector issues would still be more reliable and the seven three the seven three power stroke would have been in the Fords at the time and of that era the seven three is probably the best diesel you can get at that time but that being said we here at the bus garage feel like none of them get it right and we like swapping everything so once you put the pee pump on the 24 valve get the head redone with some proper valve seats you have the best diesel out of all of them don't worry al we got you covered best thing to do to keep these things reliable as replace that pump just get rid of it do not get rid of this filter keep this filter there's two parts to this fuel system which is your lift pump and your injection pump now this lift pump is supposed to supply injection pump with fuel pressure to run the injectors but also to keep it cold on top of the injection pump is a circuit board and it takes input from the throttle and from where the engine is and changes the timing on all the injectors to advance and delay the timing for fuel efficiency and for a little bit more power the issue is that they used the lift pump to supply extra fuel to keep that pump cold when this pump gets dirty or old or worn down it will supply enough fuel to keep the engine running but will not supply enough fuel to keep that injection pump cold the solder on the top of this circuit board melts in different spots it doesn't matter one way or another this one might melt one time that one might melt the other time and what it does is without setting any codes without telling you anything it will stop working so it might not start if you touch the throttle if I go to a certain rpm and stay there might not throttle down all sorts of different things I've seen them depending on how the circuit board fries you can also take out the ECU now your computers over here I already took it off because I had to put my engine stand on there so without being able to plug into it and you have to tell the customer it's like okay well first we're gonna start off with this pump which varies in price cheapest ones probably 200 bucks but you should upgrade this to like a fast or an air dog we've got it on our c10 actually so got a video on the fast on that one to filters it takes all the vapor put them back in the tank separates all the water and supplies plenty of extra fuel to keep that pump happy if you keep that pump happy you'll be happy then you have to replace this pump and which varies between 1,500 and 3 grands and they do not make new ones so they are all refurbished units they stopped making new pumps because this engine is 20 years old then you replace that and it still doesn't run so then you have to find a computer which they also don't make anymore so you luckily Dodge makes terrible tracks that don't last the length of the engine and you might be able to find these you yet but they're starting to get more and more expensive as well another issue with this pump there is actually a vein pump in the front so what that means is the spinning with veins in it that's slide in and out and an off center of shaft and if you run it out of fuel or you don't run it for a while those little veins can get stuck inside and not move the fuel inside the pump and the issue is you have to take the entire pump off just to freed those little veins up and then put the whole pump back together again it's really expensive time consuming and if you screw up you can override the engine and blow the whole thing moving that's exciting - mm-hmm don't let that scare you if you do have a broken 24-valve I think you know these cores are worth a little bit you can send those in they do rebuild them yet because there are lots of these engines around and it's not cheap only takes about 45 minutes to replace them if you got all the tools handy but when we talk about a pea pump conversion we would be getting rid of this electronic pump and going to a full mechanical placing this timing cover getting new injection lines putting in an inline P 70 100 pump there's only so much fuel that this VP is able to deliver so a lot of guys are chasing horsepower and torque numbers so you'll see a lot of people conversions so this one is off of a five nine and this one's off of an 8-3 you know eight threes had different styles of pumps on it whereas the five nine only had the P 70 100 the 8.3 at the P 70 100 and different models yet the difference between the eight three and the five nine is that this one gets oiled through the timing cover and this one does not have that oil that it's got the hole but it doesn't have the the oiler there it gets oiled in the back here through one of those fittings that one right there these are highly tuneable and adjustable and to put a mess to rest right away the eight-point-three usually have smaller internals the smaller plungers then the 5/9 does so the 8.3 is governed different so it doesn't really make sense to build a 8.32 stick with a p 70 100 that came out of a 5.9 liter we are going to send this one away and get this one built to handle a little bit more horsepower we're hoping to get a little bit more out of out of my truck and then we'll get some injectors to match it at the same time whether they lower the injector pressures or do something with the pump to raise it up the company that's doing it is going to make complete videos of it as well and we will get into that so we get you the complete theory behind what they can do with this pump we'll also be looking into AFC life to be to change how much fuel the rack gets so more of a mechanical adjustment on the fly whereas the electronics did that in the VP 44 phone you need the injection lines to end up in a row here and pop here now it's still a mechanical pump either way so the injection lines need to be the same length but the issue with that as this injection pump produces 290 bar to pop the injectors here the P pump produces 250 bar bar is 14.7 PSI so you can do the math so if you do a straight swap you really have to advance the timing because the injection will be delayed as that P pomp is trying to overcome the pop pressure on the injector previous P pumps that we built we had the injection pressures dropped on the injectors and we had them pop a 250 bar but I'm going to send the pump out to a different guy and see if he can raise or do something with the Peet pump to raise the injection pressures and see if we can do that safely talking to her buddy over at Oshkosh he actually just took a little torch and bent the original lines to look very nice and neat actually on his P pop conversion so that being said there are some other issues because it does have four valves per cylinder to exhaust and to intake we do find that every time I take a head off it send it up to Scott we got a lot of valve seats that are cracked they are very prone to cracking the valve seats you won't notice that coolant or anything in your oil or or whatever but it is a loss of power and that you might not notice you can just overcome that with a tune just give it more fuel yeah here's your four valves one two three four and you see where the springs are how close they are together that makes the seats yet hot and prone to cracking especially on to the exhaust okay so another big issue and you'll hear all about it is the dreaded number 53 53 means is that that was a specific factory that made these blocks pretty servers in Brazil is the thinnest casting on any one of the different runs meaning that it weighs the least but it was also prone to crack right here right at this little line here it would always crack especially if you hopped it up in any way if you kept the stock you might get lucky there's enough guys out there that will say oh I've I've got so many miles on my 53 block no problem that's fine my grandpa smoked and he lived a nice ripe age saying that smoking doesn't cause cancer it's fine but all his friends are dead across your fingers if you were buying one I would avoid it unless you can get a super cheap because there's a good chance that your Glock is gonna crack and that's very disappointing inside 54 is a fine block which is why I bought this one and I believe 56 was the thickest material that you could get if you are thinking about hopping up a pole truck or something like that 56 is probably the number that you want okay so so far we've only been talking about the ISB but you're asking me what about the is BCR the common rail and we feel that there's enough differences even though they share the same displacement the fuel system is completely separate that we want to make our own video on that that pump cp3 is super reliable will likely not let you down its the injectors and some sensors that are going to give you issues but even at that usually the one sensor it needs to see 4,000 psi before it will fire the injectors and when your injectors where they flow too much and you can't hit that 4,000 psi usually you still start your truck a little bit of ether and then you know that you can kind of narrow it down to injectors and you will be replacing injectors at some point but more than likely you can still drive that truck home just because of that when we get one in the shop we'll go over that one with a fine-tooth comb and make a completely separate video on that all first three generations of the Cummins five nine did suffer from this pin which is a dowel holding this timing cover in the right place and this dowel will work its way out landing the gears and destroy the the gearcase watch this one at least quarter-inch so fixed to that is getting rid of this little lip getting a little tab that has a hole in it where you could stick behind this bolt the sticks up in front keeps that from working out other than that it is a good engine in my opinion they are the best sounding Cummins I like the 24 valve sound much better than the 12 valve but when you put the P pump on the 24 valve it sounds like a 12o so that's kind of also why I want to raise injection pressure on the pump and see if that extra pressure makes it sound more like a VP 44 24 so to make it run as efficient as possible we are going to take this head off because this is my engine now and it will be going in my new Silverado cab so that's cowboy bought from North Carolina strip that right out we're going to bedliner the whole bottom of the cab the inside of the cab we're gonna redo all the wiring and build a silverado 3.0 only because I had to move the cab out of the driveway to get the bust in and now I was like well might as well throw it inside the shop and then I ended up by will be picking away at it and we are also getting rid of this now that we have the cat on the works for a nice reliable hauler and stock form I think we better twin-turbo this compound turbo this one I've got two turbos in that one you have four turbos in that one one turbo and they have 350 so better put two on this one some some way we got to put three tables but that's coming later head off the 24 valve there and everything looks nice and clean so that's exciting well yank the rest of these apart head over to Scott we go [Music] okay so it looks like there's a little bit of moisture in there just a little bit rusty so that is not good water in the fuel maybe that took out the pump who knows but anyway that's why we send to the machine shop because all of that will be gone and it will look brand spanking new so pressure wash it off clean it up a bit pull the last of the sensors all right if I forgot anything I'll definitely comment down below and don't take my word for it take it for all the owners that are gonna comment down below and you have to stick around for people humps wops to see if it's actually worth doing that so thanks for watching get out there fix it fingernails dirty and definitely comment down below of what other injuries review I think Kevin's trying hard to get a BP 466 so stick around for that I don't know just don't have it or not but it's trying hard [Music]
