Hit the nail on the head as always.
I honestly think comp is very fun once you get past the long wait times. And that's saying a lot, considering it can only get better from here.
The last part about Comp only ever playing 5CP hits the nail in the head about why me and so many people have a secret mild disdain on comp. Hell my favorite class is Demo, and I still find constantly playing the same one gamemode and maybe if the stars are aligned one or two KoTH maps to be tiring and against what made TF2 fun.
And while I understand alternate gamemodes need to be changed to fit a 6's format, it sometimes feel that the comp community flat-out refuse to adapt beyond their one niche gamemodes until recently, and even then with some objections.
I genuinely believe that a ton more people would join the competitive community if they could just play it the way they wanted to play it and the only thing they had to worry about was team work and the objective. sure certain comps and strategies work far better then others, but when those certain comps and strategies become absolutely mandatory then you have to expect it to turn people off.
I honestly think the biggest issue right now is the class limits.
I quit playing TF2's competitive mode after a nightmare 5cp game where half my team was building on last while the enemy had 3 heavies 3 medics. However, I do 100% agree the solution isn't crystal clear. Either class limits of 1 or 2 will still each open their own set of problems.
Personally, I would consider try the following:
Class limit of 2 for the classes labeled "offense".
Class limit of 1 for classes labeled "defense" and "support"
My logic behind this is because 2 spies and/or snipers is a massive handicap for a team, 2 demos and/or medics would be too powerful, and 2 heavies and/or engies might slow the game too much. On the flip side, 2 scouts/soldiers is fairly common in comp. while Pyro might be a bit of a wild card depending on how the class gets re-worked.
There might be a big "flaw" in this system that I'm unaware of, so feel free to critique it.
Hey, Uncle Dane, I posted this reply to another YouTube video which also talked about casual and competitive TF2. I was surprised to see you saying the same things I said a week ago. :D
His talk about Highlander not working as an official mode made sense, and I don't think it'll ever reach that point where highlander is ever included in the official competitive mode, but I also don't believe it's as difficult to implement as he makes it out to be. LoL has a system where you have your primary role you queue for and a secondary one that you're willing to take if you don't get your primary. If we made this, say, three you could now have less of an issue of finding people cause there's now three possible roles you're willing to fill, even if it's not what you want. To compensate you could even give them more rank for playing their secondary/third role rather than their primary, or give them immunity from rank drop if they opt in to fill a role mid game.
I agree that highlander can't become THE gamemode for TF2, and that's absolutely fine, but I'd love for it to at least have an option to be played competitively through valve matchmaking (Though I know that day will likely never come).
Other than that, I think Dane really spoke some true words about the situation competitive and 6v6 in general is in.
I wonder how they will take into account classes into the system. Do I have different ranks for different classes?
I main roamer soldier and im very competent with it. I am only competent with scout and only above average as demo. Will I be deranked while I improve my demo/scout? will I climb back when I play soldier?
I will be able to change the course of a game if im ranked as demo and play soldier that round, and the other way around
In my opinion 6v6 5CP is what's killing TF2. It's just not fun.
5CP isn't boring with more players and 6v6 isn't boring in other game modes.
KOTH is a better symmetrical game mode than 5CP. Hell, even pl_waste and plr_dogbread are a better symmetrical game mode and that's a game mode that doesn't exist in the game.
I did a thread about this topic and got nothing but negative replies.
