Pro DM Reviews DougDoug's Unhinged D&D Game

so I'm a retired professional dungeon master for DND D sounds like the nerdiest thing ever I know but it gives me Street Credit so I'm saying it anyway and a while back we reviewed Doug Doug's hilarious Walmart themed D andd Adventure filled to the brim with evil roombas Oreos and Lego dragons the game used a super simplified version of DnD to make it easier for chat to play along and although it ran super well I gave my input into how a sequel to the game could be improved to make the rules even more fun for chat to interact with well we finally got part two in Doug's latest edited stream video and I can safely say that out of everything I recommended Doug used exactly none of it health was removed armor doesn't exist anymore and chat got to rig their characters up with abilities that were so open-ended that they could range from turning into a chair to dooming someone to die a painful death by a direct Blast from a nuclear warhead did this make the game Flow better were viewers confused or was it just a bit too watered down for my own taste me and YouTube live chat sat down to watch the video and find out for ourselves also I got to thank you all again for hitting nearly 150k on my newest books Kickstarter for any of you out of the loop I made Silver's monster girl manual to help tabletop role players flesh out their monsters with more personality than professional dungeon master right I'm probably going to pretend to be overly critical of things that are happening right for for comedic purposes to try and compare what happens in the game to like what might happen in a more typical DND campaign trying to to figure out like connections to whatever is going on with like official rules and stuff like that and also probably just like take a look at how the players are playing how Doug is dming and make some comparisons to like how like a typical game might start just start the vid okay I'll start okay it's brand new from Parks toys this is pretty funny because Doug Doug doesn't have any more of these in stock anymore so this advertisement doesn't work after the huge success of my Dungeons and Dragons campaign with twitch chat that I put that was all me by the way because of my video I helped him out so much on that one this is total improv D and so the thing is I've done something like this before we tried a version where chat makes the entire campaign and I was a player we made it so that I was the DM and chat was the player what I came to the conclusion of was that it's always just pure chaos and it's just so wild like I don't understand how to really phrase it if you give chat too much power things don't make any sense anymore and wild things are just happening for the sake of being wild right if you let chat be a a player and like you you put them on Rails in a campaign no one can really follow along because it requires you to have like all the the knowledge of what happened before in the campaign and then people coming in who are new have no idea what's going on so I'm curious to see how this winds up and how Doug does it so let's figure that out pick a class first and then we decide from there people are saying Chef B Chef all right any of these jump out of you guys for what it is looks like we are torn between him being a frying pan what is it are they picking the race so kind of funny story okay I had a I had my friend RT in one of my newest campaigns literally just wanted to play a bear but he wanted to to have like a like a companion like a human companion who would like help him out and like treat him as if he was a normal person while just like making bare grunting noises needless to say that K pain didn't really get off the ground but the fact that he wanted to do it was just so hilarious this is also the same friend who in a different campaign wanted to play a lotha and and if you know anything about loath you know that the people who play that race are just doing it for the meme all right it's just purely a meme race this would be the character give the frying pan EG guys and a bacon smile it needs a mustache it's a chef after all I love the way Doug sets up uh the stream particularly where he picks three random viewers and he lets them talk right it makes it so that rather than allowing like the entire mass of chat just discussing things endlessly to the point where everyone feels like they just have to say like one word to influence the stream people can be picked and then those people can talk and like make coherent sense sentences to influence the story now Doug uh I don't believe has made his uh DND software like to allow viewers to like become players um he hasn't made it like open source at least not to my knowledge so no other content creator can do this yet he's going to make a 1 hour vid to 5 hours yes like if we watched the 5H hour version I was going to interrupt with enough to make a 10 hours okay so you should be grateful that we're at least just watching the 1 hour one okay okay Fireball just like Bur burn people's hands it's not like he does a lot of damage he just like gives people burns like uncomfortable burns on their hands so it's a fireball that just burns hands okay I can already tell that this entire setup to like design all the characters probably took like a full hour to do I can also already imagine that chat is not going to remember any of this we could add he has a move where he transforms into a chair I think Chad's making a reference to the last campaign for some reason I think they really wanted the wizard to polymor people into chairs so I don't know what Doug's chat has with their obsession with chairs but it's pretty funny people are saying the third move is poo that's just a disease okay I appreciate players who will willingly give their characters detriment for role playay okay we like that we'll take it okay considering that egg the bear has like no usable abilities I feel like whoever gets to play him is going to get to do the most out of pocket stuff what is it it looks like it's going to be just a guy from Missouri I feel like guy from Missouri is going to be the interesting character in this in this video I can already tell okay number two is to growed isn't the bear like a weed enjoyer like one of those weed heads Poe heads maybe they'll compliment each other now that we have our three characters once again I'm already saying I feel like this is 2 hours into the stream what is the goal of our story it looks like our brave heroes are going to stop the sixth graders trying to Nuke the castle as you travel across the land of Canada I feel like Doug in this game is putting a lot of emphasis on on chat definitely making the game I I can see the appeal and it's literally the name of the video so I'm not going to give hate to it but I feel like chat could make like really important decisions in certain aspects and then Doug could improv the rest and it would be a really good mix uh so like in this scenario I feel like Doug making like the first improv encounter on his own without like chat's input could probably be interesting and then give chat like complete creative Liberty to just figure fig out how they want to deal with it you know so hopefully Doug puts a little bit of his own like creativity into the mix at some point or another instead of chck like controlling everything if we go to the tavern I can grow and sell weed why would they let you sell weed in the tavern The Tavern might be a good place to judge their food does everyone just get like a random AI voice this is the Queen's Tavern what is going to be the activity happening in the tavern if there's a bar fight changed again does it just change every voice line guys this looks [ __ ] awful honestly that looks pretty good okay give him credit that's solid you see Queen Rosaline standing behind the bar but in the center of the bar are two bears fighting and what is clearly an illegal fighting bear ring let's see if you can break into it 12 or above and you break in 17 EG the bear burst in and right as the Bears were starting fighting okay wait hold up that's a that's another solid thing that Doug does rather than put like ability modifiers and stuff on everything Doug will just like figure out what your character is what you're probably good at and then lower the the base like difficulty of roles rather than like adding bonuses and stuff to it so like if he says the r is a nine that means he thinks that you're good at whatever you're trying to do right or you're particularly like intelligent with how you went about it uh versus if he thinks that you put yourself in a really bad situation he'll make the the role much higher but not adding roles makes things a whole lot easier for for the viewer experience yes your popcorn bursts out of the is my computer or dogs not worrying hold up it's his computer making the windows noises what I got terrified for a second Queen rosalin tries to run after you guys to get her Bears back Doug goes and grabs one of these goblins and then attempts to throw the goblin at the queen does it work have we established that the queen is problematic or anything or that I guess she was profiting off of like a like a fighting ring of like wild bears but that's about it yeah I guess it is an illegal bear fighting ring yeah and one of them is a bear so I mean we never established why the characters feel like getting in involved in this like they're just doing it for the sake of doing it but like realistically I guess it would make sense the bear fighting ring is a legal technically but like our character's motivations the bear obviously doesn't want this to be happening right hasn't really explained why I would have loved some some more character development from the bear explaining why the bear wasn't partial to what was going on here but we also really didn't need it okay so the bear mostly gets it past like that one's obvious bear doesn't want illegal bear fighting easy the frying pan we we don't know the established lore behind the frying pan and bear okay so we don't really understand that that connection right they all support their bare friend okay I could believe that all right I guess they are traveling together we could assume they've known each other for a while they they should be able to like empath like understand that they egg the bear is hurt by this all right so I could understand that let's go with that logic and continue on Doug pushes the big lighter over Queen rosalin nine or above you'll manage to succeed 15 is this going to do to her what the giant fire erupts and you watch as the evil queen Roslin evil ah she melted that proves she's evil she's like a witch that makes more sense I understand completely now okay there are five potential Treasures that you could win based off this R oh just rolling it okay treasure table yeah I don't know I was imagining Doug would do it the way he's been doing it by just letting chat choose something again but like the treasure table existing is is fine too that is the official way to do it from the dungeon Master's guide so can't blame him adance forward past the tavern and into the cheese Woods what are those things theats with guns in the cheese cheese Forest goob is immediately after not the cheese Forest it's the cheese Woods you're getting your lore wrong Doug you're out of line egg the bear comes to goo and gives him more cocaine how much cocaine do they have we haven't established how much is in their inventory can they just pull it out infinitely goo walks up with his cocaine and says goo I hope she kills you yo why do they go egg let's say you're eating towards this rat 16 or above and you'll make a path to him not 20 waa not 20 can I try to grow weed so I can use it to make a rope to throw to the mafia boss yeah I don't know if you'll help Doug starts trying to grow marijuana again if you get a 19 or above the weed grows right now oh unfortunately the weed is not growing yet I'm actually starting to realize something it seems like the fact that this guy is literally just a normal human kind of limits what people want to do with him because what is a normal human going to do that's interesting right he's not like a like a special like strange object or creature so he's not like the people who are playing him are are mostly sticking to his abilities while everyone else is doing like much more unique stuff mean while the frying pan is using its handle to help grab people the bear the mere fact that he just ate through cheese probably plays into his more animalistic natures and then basic human just uses the abilities that were like applied to him right there's not a whole lot of creativity right now from what I'm seeing the human get up to has the weed grown yet if you get a 19 or above the weed is grown it's funny how he has to deal with the the the weed growing when they can just generate cocaine I turn the entire River into a giant cheese B with my move let him cook what wait what happened what ability did they just used what did I just miss Pringle uses the let him cook move which apparently because we didn't establish this turns the entire River into a cheeseball how did they not establish this what was the original ability move number one let him cook that's all that it was okay so I guess guess we can just let him cook technically speaking if I'm correct in in saying this you couldn't quote unquote cook cheese into a cheese ball cheese ball okay we're talking about like actual cheese ball I guess that would make more sense okay but that's at that point we're changing the entire molecular structure of what the cheese soup quick sand is and we're turning it into something entirely different okay uh like you need a bunch of other ingredients I'm sure to do that or or take some ingredients out so I would say at the moment let him cook might be the strongest ability in this game at the moment good Bard enough of this [ __ ] and decides to try and reach the light to the dug left on the ground and light the cheese oils that have risen to the top of the cheese to burn everyone to death okay that's kind of [ __ ] up and dark I'm sure the cheese oils are heavily flammable this is also uh World accurate you can do this in real life cheese oil is notoriously highly flammable suddenly a giant Fireball erupts this is like a like a Bowers gate three type situation where just because it's called oil it's immediately flammable egg starts trying to run as the fire is spreading 11 or above and you make it out not happening what doug tries to run as well 11 or above he is not making it the party after traveling for days approaches the gigantic volcano you see a bunch of goblins drowning in what appears to be a gigantic pool of salsa meanwhile three more goblins are being pushed off the edge of like a diving board Thing by three gigantic Canadian you know the do you know the like the the episode of SpongeBob where like all the characters go up to to land and have to fight like the giant seagull that's what I'm imagining right now and then you hear one of the geese honk out honk honk you guys want to stay for dinner we're making Goblin salsa Goblin salsa sounds delicious actually Pringle hates goblins I think Pringle is actually racist I will grab the staff and use it to help mix the goblins and the salsa I think the fact that there is no conflict in this area just allows them to do literally whatever they want you can obviously tell what the setup in this area was meant to be like the Goblins were being sacrificed they were going to be eaten people are going to be killed right but now that Chad has done the complete opposite they've completely removed the tension from the scene as a DM I would be looking into ways to to read conflict or tension into the scene while also like flipping it on its head I don't know how I would do that like this is a very specific scene like the Goblins were obviously put in a precarious situation where they they can't fight back so I don't know how you would do it maybe make it so that like there's difficulties in like properly preparing the meal and they have to like roll specific numbers in order to like guarantee that what they're doing to the soup is making it better but right now it seems like everything that they're doing is succeeding and it's kind of just like like a fun roleplay situation which is also fine I'm just saying like it was set up to be a conflict and now it's immediately changed so you are flown directly into the the schoolhouse spelling be contest I just realized we've already established that all the school children in this Canada are goblins so there's going to be more goblins do six creators catch polio easily don't ask that question in any context ever that's his ability though he needs to ask he needs to stain character what is this creature it's huge it's like a bookworm Adventures character all right class the first word of the spelling be is genocide the chair shouts out H that's not how you spell genocide and the B swings in for a sting flying at dug it full force is this our first real battle in this campaign I'm just realizing that I think that was the first hostile attack against one of the players I offer cocaine to the bee the bear says would you like cocaine the bee says only if you can spell cocaine right now see yes o yes that's correct C yes a yes A that's correct i i that's correct c o c a i n one more letter e e that was correct you guys win theing me I was positive someone was going to screw it up on purpose I would be interested in there being more like more Stakes for the characters because magic the Noah's videos most of the time has his players with re resources right in Doug's game everyone can just infinitely use their abilities which makes things easier for for chat to remember but also makes it that there's never any stakes in when they use things and how I think this is perfect for for chat right because chat can't be trusted with Resource Management right uh although I just wish it could be implemented in some way like maybe a health system I don't think we've we've established that anyone has HP but yeah I would say like if anything maybe just HP and I think we could leave everything else to just like role play to just improv congratulations for winning the spelling be you win honey small spoiler I don't think the honey ever gets used I don't think any of the items they've collected up until now have been used like okay what have they collected so far they're just so unmemorable like the random items that they collect and there's no way for them to remember that they have them very easily so they got the pepper grinder staff at the volcano geese Nest they got the rat from the cheese pool they got goob okay so I take that back they have gotten some use out of the out of the items they've gotten goob did some things I think the the rat was used for roleplay a little bit the pepper grinder staff was used during the goose encounter is that Santa it's The Clash Royale King as the adventures barge in through the open castle walls they're met with a horrifying scene like a dozen sixth grade goblins standing around the very king of fantasy he's so Derpy I do this to Fantasy Canada you've always loved us and being put into salsa and that's when you notice that there's a shadowy figure next to the seventh grader the iconic goob Whispering into the seventh grader's ears convincing him to do acts of horrific evil okay once again the the mascot character that travels with the party or at one point traveled with the party turns out to be evil this is the second time this has happened in a dog duug Campaign which is funny that it's happened twice you hear the seventh grader yell out we'll do it we'll launch the new but before he can finish the sentence Doug starts running forward holding his bck lighter Doug no this is a bluff we weren't actually going to set it off we weren't actually going to set it off you have a literal nuclear weapon and you're threatening the king who's on it and you think they believe you're not going to set it off I aim my time staff at Doug and fire Pringles runs forward with the time staff an attempt to was it a Time staff but it was a pepper grinder pepper comes out onto the bottom okay there we go happy Doug remembered that it wasn't an actual time sta the King on rocket slowly shooting down towards Earth I do cocaine to try and run C scramble on the king Pringle cast scramble and for some reason swaps himself with the King a strong ability next to his subject springle let him cook and scramble are just so powerful I use my pan sexuality on the nuke Pringle the frying pan looks at the nuke and attempts to seduce it the Goblins are all screaming in the background the king and goo and egg are just doing is too strong best kid in the game I swear I love you nuclear energy weaponized into an explosive device I've always loved you okay I will say they also tried to seduce the final boss in Doug's first Campaign which was the dragon uh to remind everyone that did not work at all so [Applause] yeah nope the nuke crashes into the cheese Woods where by the way goob is still laying and explodes in a massive fire on a seventh grer oh okay wait hold on before that happen Pringle uses scramble one more time it's too strong it's too powerful Kaka goes down and explodes over everything but turns out Doug made it out alive Doug was safe from the castle wait what he's nuke proof how is he nuke proof was this established okay the castle is nuke proof okay why did every single sixth grader go outside did they want to die they didn't know they didn't no but they apparently knew about the nuke and they apparently knew how to procure a nuke and they tied the king up to the nuke all right so that was certainly something but I think I should summarize my feelings about the stream here some character abilities are weak and others are strong the weed growing ability of Doug from Missouri had no functional purpose besides taking time away from the actual events in the game it was funny don't get me wrong just completely useless a lack of any health or armor system also kind of makes battles feel flat since we never established what would happen if an attack like the killer be Stinger even hits someone the lack of rules makes the game Flow so much faster sure but they also remove the suspense and tension that the first D and game was so enthralling for in the first game viewers were on the edge of their seat seeing the wizard conjure terrifying Illusions The Bard yell out sick Burns to lower enemy self-esteem and the Barbarian for coming up with creative plans that made use of his strength in game number two there was way less cohesion I'm sure this made the game way easier to run and for newcomers dropping into the stream halfway through probably way easier to follow which for the streaming sphere is incredibly important and probably enough to Warrant all the changes but for me although still entertaining don't get me wrong I wasn't nearly as connected to these characters and their Journey as a whole I'm honestly curious to hear all of your thoughts and if you prefer the first game over the other but anyway blame but never simple hit the Bell so you don't miss the next time we go live and I'll see you
