PG&E has announced that up to 800,000 of its customers are potentially going to be without electrical energy for up to five days if you're one of those customers would you be ready hi I'm Jonathan the Provident prepper we're ready for that let us teach you some of the things that you can do so that you can be ready also PG&E has announced a potential power outage affecting up to 800,000 of its customers it's times like this one being a prepper pays off big-time so as PG&E has made this announcement there are hundreds of thousands of people that are rushing out and preparing to be without power for several days potentially up to five days but if you're a prepper and you've done your job right this is no big deal this is a walk in the park for you PG&E has given everybody 24 to 48 hours to prepare for this power outage and the internet is flooded with information on how to prepare for a power outage however we'd like to share with you exactly what we do to prepare for a power outage first thing we're gonna do is check our preparations make sure that what we have stored is ready to go and that we know exactly how we're going to use those things the next thing we're gonna do is we're going to check our family emergency plan make sure that it's up-to-date review it with each member of the family because families are dynamic and they change on a regular basis if you look at this picture of our family you'll see that we have dogs and cats and teenagers and babies and relatives living with us and there's a whole lot of dynamics in this situation and every one of these individuals plays an important part in our family plan we have a written plan with written contact numbers and everything is written down so that everybody has a reference and can know what they need to do when they need to do it as you can imagine Isis going out the door like crazy in California because you're gonna have freezers and refrigerators with no power and five days is a long time for that freezer to maintain a temperature one of the things you might want to do is have some jugs of ice stored in your freezer this will help to maintain the temperature back up power is a wonderful thing to have if you have a generator and if you have the fuel stored so that you can use that you must remember to use it safely you cannot use a generator anywhere in your home or in your garage and you need that to be away from open windows so you do not have the potential for asphyxiation you have to remember if that power goes down a lot of those gas stations will not have the ability to pump fuel and avoiding the long lines right now there are thousands of people standing in lines trying to get some fuel before the power goes out you don't want to be there in some situations you will still be able to use credit cards but in other situations it will be cash only so you will want to have small denominations so that you can make change it is probably wise to have multiple credit cards with available balances on them we have had occasions where we are traveling and one of our cards is not accepted because we failed to let our financial institution know that we were leaving the area and they saw a suspicious transaction and shut it down good Preppers always have a backup without electricity will you be able to open your garage door or maybe some of the other gates or other things that may be affected by a power outage and you just might want to consider leaving the area altogether until the power outage is over you can stay with friends or family that are out of the area or you just might want to take a spontaneous vacation there will be a lot of craziness when the power goes out and so sometimes it might just be best to remove yourself from the situation think about this if you can't go to work because there's a power outage if the kids can't go to school because of the power outage this just might be a great time to take a spontaneous family vacation and make the best of a difficult situation as always water storage is absolutely vital we strongly recommend a minute of two gallons per person per day for two weeks and as the event approaches you'll probably want to fill some other containers whatever you have available the ability to filter and purify water and those tools are very important also a loss of electricity may also mean the loss of some sanitation services more than likely your sewer is not going to go down but in an extended event that is a possibility do you have the ability to take care of all your sanitation needs without some of those conveniences show stable food supply is a no-brainer it's important that you have shelf-stable foods that can be eaten right out of the package if necessary make sure you plan for infant needs with baby food or formula pet food do you have what you need on hand to be able to take care of everyone in your family for an extended period of time cooking without electricity can be a challenge it's possible if you have gas appliances that some of those may work during a power outage you'll have to figure that out with your individual appliances but make sure that you have a safe way to cook your food without electricity and without producing carbon monoxide in your home also make sure that you have adequate alternative lighting many of these devices are solar operated very easy to use very easy to charge and readily available when you need them depending on the time of year heating might become a critical issue make sure that you understand how to practice conservation and take the best advantage of the heat that you have in your home to keep you warm create micro climates in this photo you'll notice that this is just a cheap fifteen dollar pup tent and what we did is we had the kids sleep in this little tent actually there's only two this left in each of the tents we had two of them but by putting that tent there it created a really warm environment for them when the house was really cold and it was also just a lot of fun it was lot of fun if you click on the card in the upper right hand corner it'll take you to a post that we created when we turned off our power intentionally in the dead of winter just to see if we could survive it but make sure that you have safe non electric heat sources that you can use during a power outage and that you are very careful about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning the ability to communicate and to receive information is vital make sure that you have battery or cranked powered solar radios make sure you have fresh batteries a battery bank portable chargers for your cell phones solar chargers all these kinds of things are very handy and that every member of your family understands exactly how to use the tools that you do have on hand you or a member of your family may need electricity to operate critical medical equipment it's important that you plan in advance for this this may be a time when you really have to have a portable generator or a battery backup to make sure that the needs of this family member is met or you may really need to take off and go to a place that is not affected by the power outage make sure that you have all of your prescriptions that you need filled and ready to go over-the-counter meds first-aid supplies and a list of emergency contact numbers written down so that if something happens everybody knows exactly how to get ahold of the medical provider or whoever it is that you need to call for help unfortunately situations like a power outage bring out the worst in some individuals make sure that your home is secure and make sure that you have some self-defense skills and most important make sure that we take care of each other check on your neighbors if you have an elderly couple or a single mom or anybody in your neighborhood that may have special needs reach out and take care of them because as we work together as a community and take care of each other a power outage is nothing for us we'll all be ok number one reason why you want to be a prepper is because prepping turns a disaster into an adventure we don't live in California but if we
