of you who are new to the daily creative challenge this is a week-long challenge to level up your video editing skills now before we begin make sure to pop into the chat and let me know where you are tuning in from so let's pop into the chat real quick we've got valdere sam frank hello hello we've got cody bear and we've also got hey hotshot hey hello welcome thank you all so much for joining so let's go on over to the behance page and for those of you who are just tuning in and joining us today let me walk you through what we're doing so over here you'll see this is behance.net slash challenge slash premiere and this is where you can sign up to take the challenge so right here if you press this blue button you'll get daily notifications for the challenge and then you can also join the community chat over on discord and this is where you can get feedback share your work from the challenges so definitely recommend checking that out joining the community so once you press the community chat it'll take you over to this invite link if you haven't joined already and this once you join will take you to this discord right here so you'll see over on the left we have all these different servers and the main place we're going to be hanging out is over here in a challenge so this is where you can share your challenges for the day so up here this is from yesterday's challenge dorina shared her custom workspace for premiere and it looks fabulous love it great job darina so for those of you who are working on your custom workspaces from yesterday's challenge definitely make sure to drop those in here so we can all check them out and then you can also go ahead and introduce yourself over in the introductions server and then also check out all these different things like tips and tricks the chat the creative challenge over an announcement you know the drill so let's go back to this page right here so the next thing that you can do is download the starter files so if you scroll down you'll see we have day one over here get started with video and if you missed that you can just press watch video and you can watch yesterday's challenge now for today's challenge make a rough cut we're going to be creating a rough cut by adding footage to the timeline in premiere pro so if you want to download the starter files you can just press them by getting started now these are the same files from yesterday we're going to be using those same files for this whole challenge so if you already downloaded them fabulous if you have not you can access them right here you can either copy it to your work or just hover over the individual clips press the three dots and then download each of them individually so let's hop on over to premiere and we can get started and by the way i'm seeing some more people in the chat so we've also got josie we've got alberto oh hey we've also got dorina hello everyone we've also got umacorn thank you all so much for tuning in so as i mentioned today is all about creating a rough cut now before we start putting our clips together let's talk about the timeline what is the timeline so the timeline is this area right down here you'll see it is currently selected and you can tell that it's selected because it has this blue outline so the timeline is where you place your video clips your audio music graphics adjustment layers basically all the components that make up your video so over here on the left you'll see we have these different layers right so up here we have v1 v2 v3 v4v5 so these are all your different video layers so you can go ahead and stock clips to v2 so like for example let's just cut this up real quick and i'm just going to drag it up here you'll see now i'm able to put a video on v2 and i'll dive into this a little bit deeper and what i like to use it for in a sec but let's take a look down here so below it you'll see we have a1 a2 and so on all the way to a5 and so these are all your different audio tracks and this is where you place your audio so you know like your voiceover your recorded audio from your camera or music sound effects things like that now you can also toggle these layers on and off so for the video for the visibility if i turn this off by pressing this eye icon you'll see that now we don't see it anymore if i turn it back on you'll see it now for the audio you have these different options so m is to mute your track so you won't hear it at all whereas s is to solo your track meaning if you have multiple audio layers and let's say you only want to hear what's on this first audio track if you press s for cylip you'll only hear what's on that video track that can be really helpful because let's say you're working on something and you have some music added in there but you are really trying to edit the audio maybe you want to cut out some words here and there and hearing the music would be distracting so if you just solo that layer that'll be a great way for you to really just hear what that person is saying and edit just those words so with mute again you would just press that and it would enable it by turning that green color so the next thing over here we have is this voiceover button so if you wanted to record voiceover directly into premiere you would just press this button and it would count you down three two one and then you can record your voiceover but we're not going to be doing that today because we already have some audio that was recorded into our footage for the starter files so up here let's go to our project panel and let's take a look at this so you'll see that in my footage bin within starter files i have all my different clips right now take a note of these icons over to the left so the ones that have this purple film strip and this green audio icon indicate that there is video and audio but take a look at this last one this only has a film strip what does that mean that means it's only video there's no audio on that clip so what we want to do from here to begin editing our footage is creating a sequence so to do that we can go up to file new sequence and then from here you're going to be presented with this window where you have a ton of different options now you'll see that one of these options is digital slr so that's the one that we are going to be picking for this video and these clips were shot in 1080p so i'm gonna go ahead and select this one and they were also shot at 24 frames per second and if you're a little bit confused about that you're like shireen what are frames per second what are you talking about the way that you can know what your clips were shot at like what frame rate is to go over to your project panel and look at this area right here that says frame rate so you'll see they all say 23.976 fps aka frames per second so that's how i know that this was shot at 24 frames per second and on your camera if you're filming yourself you will typically have options like 24 25 30 maybe even 60. so that is what that is all about so we're going to choose 24 and then from here we are going to give our sequence a name so let's just call this adobe live dcc for daily creative challenge and then i'll press ok so now we have created a new sequence and this is where we can begin to add in our clips and you see i already had a sequence over here the one that's called new sequence 1080p 24 but this is basically how you create a new one so let's just go ahead and edit in this sequence so let's oh you know what before we do that actually let's go back to file organization because you'll see the sequence has been added to our project panel but it's now under our footage bin i want to put it into sequences so i'm going to click and drag this all the way up to sequences and now it's nice and organized and our sequence is in sequences okay now let's actually begin to build out our clips so we have a few different options here you could either add all of these clips to your timeline and then just go through them and start editing them that way or you can individually look at the clips and set in and out points and you can edit that way so let's try both because why not so the first thing that we're going to do is just add all of them to the timeline so i'm going to click on this first one up here and then press shift on my keyboard go to the last one press that and now you've selected all of those and then i'll just click and drag these over to my timeline so now we have all of these added if we want to zoom in on our timeline we can press the backslash key and then this will just zoom in on our timeline if you want you could also use these controls down here and just click and drag and that is how you can further expand or contract your clips so now we can go through and we can just start watching the whole thing and editing everything down so let's start with this first one this first clip is basically the introduction to our video and this video is about three ways to wear a scarf so let's take a look and listen and let's see where we want to make our cuts so i'm going to press spacebar on my keyboard to play today i'm going to show you three ways to wear a scarf here are three ways to wear a scarf i'm going to show you how to wear a scarf three different ways alright so you see that we have three different options for this intro clip the wording is different but the main takeaway here is essentially the same three ways to wear a scarf so let's go back and we'll listen again and this time we're gonna make some cuts at each of those breaking points so to make a cut you're gonna press c to bring up your bleep tool and let's expand on this timeline a little bit more just so we can really get precise get all up in there and another way that you can tell where the clips end is by looking at the waveforms in the audio so if i go over to my audio right here and i hover over the area where it says audio 1 and audio 2 i can begin to expand that track and make it bigger so visually i can really see what i'm looking at now when i'm looking at these waveforms you'll see that they drop down at certain areas right so like over here for example and like over here i know that that sentence has ended so that is another way that you can at a glance be able to tell where to make your cuts so let's go back and take another listen and again just pressing c to bring up my blade tool and while we're doing this we're going to make some cuts today i'm going to show you three ways to wear a scarf here are three ways to wear a scarf i'm going to show you how to wear a scarf three different ways okay so for this last clip i'm going to trim it down just a little bit now i have a few different ways to do this here are the main ways that i like to do it i'm going to press v and this will bring up this red arrow basically this is our selection tool and if i hover over the end of a clip i can press and drag this over to trim down my clip so if i want it to end right there that is how i would do that now another way that you can do it let me just press command c is by pressing b so you can also access these up here so this is the ripple edit tool and you'll see if i press and hold and just click it'll bring up all these other tools we're just going to focus on the ripple edit tool so this is really cool because it allows us to do the same thing we can just click and drag this over and trim down that clip but unlike before we don't have that gap in our timeline anymore the clip that is after that clip that we just trimmed automatically snaps to that clip so it just saves that extra step of having to go in and delete that area between those clips now let me just press command z one more time and let me show you how you can get rid of that gap so again just going back and pressing v dragging this over so now that we have this gap if i just play this through you're gonna see that we're gonna have this black space in our video we don't want that so to get rid of it you're just going to simply press in that area and it'll select it by turning white and then you can press delete on your keyboard now it's up to you which version you like to do but i tend to like to use the ripple edit tool just save some time and that extra hassle so now that we have our three options for this intro clip what we can do is choose which take we like better so right off the bat i know that this last take is not something that i want to use because as i'm speaking my eye blinks in a way that's a little bit just like weird and this is such a minor thing but as you're editing more and more you start to pick up on these things and since we have two other options for takes why not just use the better option and so if i take a look at this one more time and let's just expand this program monitor and to do that i'm pressing the tilde key just look at my eyes and when i'm blinking as i'm speaking i'll show you how to wear a scarf three different ways it was really subtle but like it's in there and to me it's a little bit distracting so i'm gonna get rid of that clip so i'm going to choose it and then press delete so now we have an option between the first take or the second take so let's just listen to both and we can decide today i'm going to show you three ways to wear a scarf here are three ways to wear a scarf let me know in the chat which version you prefer do you prefer this first take or the second one and i'll play it again one more time and y'all can help me decide today i'm going to show you three ways to wear a scarf here are three ways to wear a scarf alright let me know in the chat while i wait i'm going to trim this first part of the clip right here and to do that again i'm just going to press b on my keyboard bring up ripple edit and bring this over and you'll see let's snap that again to the beginning of our clip ilmacorn is saying first and i'm with you i'm leaning towards the first one as well so let's go with this first one so i'm going to delete the second one right here dorina's also saying one uh asidu is saying the second nathan is saying first all right we have more for the first so let's just go with the first one so i'm going to delete this second one just press delete and let's keep going so i'm going to close this gap on my timeline again by just pressing in that area and then pressing delete so now let's just bring this in a little bit so we can see the whole clip and let's go on to the second clip and let's see if we need to make any cuts or anything like that so again just pressing the spacebar to press play the first way is super simple you're simply going to open up your scarf and make sure that it is folded in half so as you can see right now this is the full length of the scarf and i'm just going to make sure it is nicely folded in half and i'm going to place it around my neck now you want to make sure that both sides are an equal length when you are standing all right so in this area right here we have some space that doesn't really need to be there so let's cut that out so we're gonna go back over we're just gonna scrub to the end of where i'm speaking and right here i'm just really looking at these waveforms right so right here as they go down i know this is where i want to make a cut so i'm just going to bring up play tools blade tool again by pressing c going to make a cut and let's go over to this part right here right as i begin to speak and i'm going to press b to bring up the ripple edit tool and let's just drag this over so now let's play this back and see if we need to make any further adjustments when you are standing okay so we have some area at the end of here where i'm not really speaking so let's take a listen again and i'm going to make note of when i stop speaking and i'm going to press spacebar to stop the footage when i stop speaking when you are standing all right so right there so now i know with my ripple edit tool i need to bring it back to right there so now let's take another look when you are standing so you'll see as i stand these are both the same length okay and we're going to trim the end of this right here again with the ripple edit tool just going to bring that over and let's watch this back one more time when you are standing so you'll see as i stand these are both the same length okay that looks great so let's move on now remember in the beginning how i told you there are multiple ways to put these clips on your timeline so the other way that you could do it is by setting in and out points so let's do that for this third clip right here so i'm going to go back to my project panel and i want to bring up this third clip in my source monitor so to do that i'm going to just double click like that and now we have brought up that third clip and we can play that back in our source monitor by pressing the spacebar while the source monitor is selected so i'm going to press space and then as i'm playing this back i'm going to press i on my keyboard to set an in point meaning this is the area where i want this clip to start and then i'm going to press o on my keyboard where i want the video to end so let's play this back and set our in and out points the next way is to loop it okay so i'm just going to bring this back to the beginning because i know i want my end point to be right at the beginning right here so i'm going to press i now we have set our in point and let's press space bar again to play and let's set our out points the next way is to loop it around your neck so you're going to bring over one side of the scarf so that you have a little bit of fabric here and more fabric here then you're going to loop this around your neck and then just make sure that these two links are even now you can leave it like this or you can cross them over if you would like okay so i know that i stopped speaking somewhere around the end of here so i'm gonna hover back a little bit and then play this again and set that out point cross them over if you would like right there so i press o and i have set my out point so now to bring that over to my timeline i also have a few different options so let's just get rid of it right here i'm going to get rid of this third clip that we already put on our timeline because i want to show you how to do it from your source monitor so the first way that you can do it is by hovering over this icon right here so this will say drag video only meaning if i press and drag this over i'm only bringing in the video not the audio now let's say i wanted to only bring in the audio what i could do is hover over this waveform icon right here and if you just hover over it for a sec it'll say drag audio only so now if i drag this down to my audio layer you'll see we only have our audio added but let's say you want both of them if you just go back to your project panel and you choose that clip and drag it in you are going to have both the video and the audio and the clip will be trimmed to the areas where you set your in and out points so let's do that again let's go back to this first clip right here this introduction one and let's set in and out points for a part of the footage that we want to use again you're going to press i to set your end point and oh to press your out point so let's press space today i'm going to show you three ways to wear a scarf here are three ways to wear a scarf i'm gonna all right so right here i set my in point and over here i set my out point but let's say as you're editing and you're listening to this over and over you realize that you actually don't want this area you want a different part of the clip so you can change your in and out points so let's go through and we'll just keep playing this again and let's change our in and out points and all you have to do to change them is press i and o again to set new in and out points so we're going to press spacebar i'm going to show you how to wear a scarf three different ways boom just like that so now we have selected this different part of the clip so this is another way that you can edit just go through all of your clips one by one and set your in and out points so it's really up to you personal preference some people really like to just dump everything on the timeline and then just look at everything and start editing in the timeline some people like to do in and out points so really just personal preference let me know in the chat which one you prefer do you prefer to just dump everything and then start going through and editing or are you the kind of person that likes to go through clip by clip and set in and out points let's keep going and we are going to continue building out our rough cut the last way is to loop the scarf so you're going to begin with your scarf again just fold it in half and you are going to make sure that both sides are even now you're going to have this side right here which is going to be looped and then you're going to have the rest of the scarf here make sure to hold it by the center and put this around your neck with the loop opening on one side then you're going to take these two sides and just pull it through your loop i'm going to pull out my hair and then you can just bring this up this looks best with a jacket on top so definitely recommend this for those colder winter months so pressing spacebar to bring our cursor to right here and then just going to press b again to bring up the ripple edit tool and trim the end now let's take a look at this last clip and trim this and that is how to wear a scarf three ways comment down below and let me know which way is your favorite again pressing space bar bringing over the end with the ripple edit tool and the last clip that we have doesn't have any audio this has just the video clip so this is known as b-roll these other clips where i'm speaking those are your talking heads or a-roll so this is like your main footage whereas the b-roll is supplementary footage to add more visual contacts so b-roll is great because you can add it over your clips to hide cuts if you want to or if there's like anything that you really just want to hide you can do that like let's say your clip is blurry or if there's an area where you're talking about something so for example as i'm mentioning the scarf in the beginning let's say i really want to have emphasis on the scarf what i can do is bring over this clip and bring it over to an area where i'm talking about the scarf for example so maybe like somewhere over here so let's just press play the first way is super simple you're simply going to open up your scarf and of course you can cut this down just press the blade tool by pressing c and then i'm going to press v to bring up the selection tool select this end part right here and now we just have that clip shortened a little bit so go through and begin to build out your rough cut and when you do make your rough cut make sure to save it and share it over in the discord right here over in the challenge where you can get feedback and i definitely suggest that you all give each other feedback as well so we can all help each other just learn and grow make sure to come back here again tomorrow for day three of the daily creative challenge and thank you all so much for watching bye you
