Pixel Art 101: Terraria Samurai

welcome back if you didn't know I'm a terraria fan terraria is doing an art contest for their journeys and update which i think is the last terraria update and well since I'm a terraria fan you know we got to do it let's check out the submissions oh they don't stand a chance we got this okay so I got a couple of references here that I like this one especially I Shrunk it it looks so bad shrunk and then I got a couple of terraria armors here just give me ideas and see you know how you know make it fit the game art style so it looks like the character is really tiny I didn't know this but terraria characters are a little over 16 by 16 and in regards to height it's such a weird size it's not 32 by 32 minutes not 16 by 16 weird in between but um whatever so we got we got a character here and basically I'm just gonna draw over this so that way everything fits just right okay so first of all I kind of just want to get the right colors in so let's just go ahead and like build this using using colors from from this red arm really love how red it is and go in and adjust it layer later later we can go ahead and dress fit later but I just wanted to have I want to have sort of a base start from [Music] probably something like that was look really cool for the samurai mask I think we're gonna go with esker helmet say my helmet I think we're gonna go with something like this but make it red there we go something like that so plate armor on the side and a little thingamajig I'll just do a really quick one maybe something like that I'll get back to it later [Music] all right let's go over to the chest plate best plates name our eyes what do they look like I don't think they really look like this let's go back to our references the real samurai armor kind of is just this big giant chunk I want to make it look more interesting than just a big plate in the center yeah it does look like it's kind of just a big plate but we'll do something a little more than that I'll go with the darker color I'll start it all the way by the neck and for now I'll just color in the old thing they have a lot more colors in there we'll add more colors too actually I'll do it right now so I'm gonna go down into the left I'm not only making the color darker but I'm also desaturating it because by desaturating it it looks like there's less light hitting it let go huge the arms are in Terraria they're so big and then looks like one pixel above that rest of the arm armor this right here would actually be part armor all right think this is looking pretty good the chest might be a little too puffy can't really tell we'll get back to it later so I also just want to give them a normal hand there's a technique where you make the outline the color of the a dark color of the object that it is so this right here instead of it being black it's a really dark tan color okay I think something like that's fine for the arm the perspective this is bothering me it'd probably be something more like that but uh almost doesn't even look good like that maybe I want bourbon oh yeah dude that's that's nice gonna use a really dark orange to maybe give this an outline let's see what it what it ends up looking oh that looks terrible doesn't it have an outline or not now I definitely don't like that it's better without an outline but we can add a little bit of shading [Music] all right so we got the body done outs do the feet for Sam I actually kind of like this I like those like brown boots Samurai look in boots instead of like that of like armor I don't I'm I try red ones I think for that we need to put some them red up here and we're gonna need to have the in guards and the legs in Terraria you seen the legs in Terraria they are thick so I think I think I'm really gonna try to make the legs thinner then let's make this feet really dark down here and maybe something like something like that like that yeah I think that's pretty cool give us some more form going to aid it a little bit maybe even grab some of that brighter red put it right here on me this part right here if you remember this part was like the crotch guard and project guard it's just basically something that hangs maybe we should make it hang lower I think we might need to make it hang lower if we want to give us some kind of design let's try something like that there we go I think that looks pretty good I think the next step is to really just work on the shading and the outline [Music] [Music] I think that's all for the samurai Terraria armor it looks amazing I hope it makes it into the game in case you didn't know I'm a game developer and I'm working on a tower defense dungeon crawler you can wishlist on Steam now thanks for watching if you like pixel art follow me on Twitter can you guess the games I got up this week there's a little mobile game that I've been working on I can't wait to show you guys next week so I'll see you then right dev like subscribe
