PASTOR WINTLEY PHIPPS: “PRAY FOR THE REMNANT” - 6/27/2020

it is an honor and a privilege to come before you today to share the message God has placed upon my heart even though we cannot be together physically we are thankful for these technologies that allow us to take the Word of God to every corner of the globe I must tell you after spending more than five million miles on airplanes it has been a blessing just to get a break the other day I was in my closet and I looked down and there was something looking back up at me like it was a long lost puppy saying hey when are we gonna go out to play it was my luggage I haven't seen my carry-on bag in months we've even started to miss our friends at TSA you know the ones we saw every week and the occasional extra security check one day my wife and I were going through TSA and the gentleman stopped and said excuse me ma'am do you have anything sharp in your luggage she said I don't think so he said will you come with me he pulled her off to the side and he opened up her bag and the first thing that came out was her Bible she said oh yes the Lord did say that his word is sharper than a two-edged sword today we're going to open the Word of God but before we do I want to have a word of Prayer father as we open your word I ask that you would cleanse me of all unrighteousness fill my life with your Holy Spirit's presence and power speak to me through me and for me and I promise your Lord I'll always give you the honor the glory and the praise in Jesus name I pray amen my message today pray for the remnant pray for the remnant if you have Bibles with you turn with me to the book of 2nd Kings chapter 19 verse 1 the Word of God says and it came to pass when King Hezekiah heard it that he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord and he sent Aliyah cam which was over the household and shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth to Isaiah the prophet the son of amos and they said unto Him thus saith as Akaya this is a day of trouble and of rebuke and blasphemy for the children are come to the birth and there is not strength to bring forth it may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rebecca whom the king of Assyria his master had sent to reproach the Living God and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God had heard wherefore said the Word of God lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left pray for the remnant we see here in the Word of God a distressing geopolitical conflict two superpowers and a high-stakes standoff in the north the kingdom of Assyria in the south the kingdom of Ethiopia two empires battling for the control of the city of Jerusalem trapped in the middle a little smaller vassal nations each trying to read the shifting balances of imperial power in a small way I have seen firsthand smaller nations making similar political calculations trying to decide whether they should ally themselves with the United States or the Soviet Union I've seen firsthand how complicated it can get when superpowers face-off against one another and how little countries try their best not to end up on the losing side of history in 1986 I landed in Luanda Angola Angola was at war with South Africa South Africa was at allied with the United States they took us to the northern part of Angola to a city called cabinda and there I saw with my own eyes Russian and Cuban troops protecting Americans who were working on the Chevron Gulf oil fields Americans from Louisiana and Texas and Oklahoma these Russian and Cuban troops were protecting Americans from CIA back guerrillas who were trying to blow up the oil fields where the Americans were living and working who were protected by the Russians and the Cubans complicated complicated this situation with Judah Assyria and Ethiopia represented a complicated power dynamic now to keep them safe God had counseled Judas King Ahaz not to take sides in any political game of Thrones King Ahaz was instructed by God to remain neutral and choose the path of non-alignment when I ministered on Capitol Hill I had a wise mentor in ministry who once said to me brother as you navigate between Republicans and Democrats just keep in mind it's hard to make friends when you need them I soon learn it requires great diploma to minister to both sides of the political aisle and here's how God helped me navigate the political aisle stay neutral and keep focused on ministry one day I had to sing at this big function in Washington where President Clinton spoke and the same night I had to rush across town and sing at this big Republican function and when I got there I announced that I had just come from singing for the President of the United States and there was this boom and rumblin that went through the audience I said no hey wait a minute wait a minute I said I always go where people really need the Lord and then there was this polite applause and then I said and that's why I'm here I've learned stay neutral and keep focused on ministry King ass did not remain neutral he rejected God's counsel and made Judah an ally of the kingdom of Assyria when his throne was taken over by the new King Hezekiah Hezekiah weighed the scales of power and he switched sides and allied Judah instead with Ethiopia but with this new political realignment Hezekiah soon realized he had made a mistake he had miscalculated the Syrian army got the upper hand over Ethiopia and with unparalleled ferocity and fury marched on Jerusalem to spank and discipline King Hezekiah and so here in our scripture we find the Assyrian army camped on the outskirts of Jerusalem boldly threatening the people of God the Assyrian King Sennacherib sent his chief officer to negotiate the terms of Judas surrender he said give us from your temple all the golden chalices and holy vessels of your God and we'll leave you alone the priests of God overcome by fear raided the temple handed over everything required to meet the conquerors demands but when all the treasures had been delivered into his hands the King's envoy said since you didn't put up a fight for the distinctive elements of your faith I revoked the truce terminate the treaty and I demand the unconditional surrender of Jerusalem when King Hezekiah heard the new demands and the vicious hauntings of the Assyrian King he taught his kingly roles covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord to pray judge sometimes prayer is the only power we have to halt the advances of Satan and his demonic hosts the Bible tells us that while on his knees Hezekiah received a special delivery message from the assyrian king the king said to Hezekiah i heard you've turned to your God in prayer if you could only see my army you would realize that your prayers are useless and just as the gods of other nations have not delivered their people out of my hand so shall not the god of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine out of my church Hezekiah read that letter with its threatenings and he cried out to his servant Alya kam come quickly run to the prophet tell our zaiah that this is a day of problem and rebuke and a blasphemy for the children are come to the Bears and there is not strength to bring forth till Isaiah we have come to a moment of crisis as a nation and we are in a weakened vulnerable state tell Isaiah that the time has come to lift up the remnant lift up the remnant in prayer the chyme the time has come to pray for the remnant church as they prayed and God heard the prayers of Isaiah and he said to the king servant you go back to Hezekiah and tell him that God said don't be afraid of the words of rap Chaka tell the king of Assyria he has no idea who he has ridiculed he does not know who he has just blessed fiend tell the king of Assyria he has challenged my authority insulted my sovereignty tell the king of Assyria I know where he lives I watched him when he comes in and I can see him where he goes out tell the king of Assyria I'll put a hook in his nose put a bit in his mouth tell the king of Assyria that the same road he took in I'm gonna see to it that he takes the same road out Church I can hear Hezekiah now Lord do I really have to tell him all that yes said the Lord and there's law I want you to tell him you tell him that God said I will establish my remnant in the earth and they shall bear fruit Church I want you to know no matter how dim things look our God always has the last word I don't care what the Congress says or what the Supreme Court says our God always has the last word I don't care what the White House says or what the president says our God always has the last word I remember down in Louisiana an old black man was confronted by his boss a bigoted prejudiced man and he said to that old black man hey I heard your preacher out at your church has been preaching about civil rights and that old black man said yes sir he said I want you to know that white man said I want you to know you all will never get your civil rights and that old black man said yeah I hear what you say sir but suppose God say so God always has the last word and then the law says one more thing you tell the king of Assyria that God said he will not enter this city for I the LORD am its defense hallelujah tell the king of Assyria I will defend this city and save it for my namesake Church I can tell you sometimes I've seen it in my life God will bless you when others try to hurt you he will bless you for the glory of his name I can tell you from experience if you've ever been defrauded or swindled or cheated stolen from and yes that can happen even in the church not everybody who's in the church is converted you know even in the church you have slick-talking church-going con artists but listen to this word from the servant of the Lord listen to what she says she says if in your power you would advantage yourself at your neighbor's disadvantage every dollar which comes to you in this manner will carry with it a curse which you will feel sooner or later have mercy God she says marks every act of a justice be it done to believer or unbeliever and he will not pass it over so don't you worry God says a reckoning is coming in the meantime you just claim Isaiah chapter 61 verses 6 & 7 I want you to turn in your Bibles to this text when you've been defrauded or taken advantage of this is a mighty word from God Isaiah 61 verses 6 & 7 their God promises if you remain faithful here's what the Lord says you will feed on the wealth of nations and in their riches you will boast and instead of your shame instead of shame God says you will receive a double portion praise the Lord instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance and so you will inherit a double portion in your land and everlasting joy will be yours church when others steal from you God says I'll bless you with double for your trouble you just hold on half a and remember it is in the quiet crucible of our personal private sufferings that our noblest dreams are born and God's greatest gifts are given and often God gives his greatest gifts in compensation for what we have endured and what we've been through instead of shame you will receive a double portion brothers and sisters Isaiah 37 verse 36 tells us that that night Sennacherib went to bed and pride but he woke up to a site he had never seen before the morning light revealed that all I need all his 185 thousand soldiers were dead my god you see during the night God sent an angel one angel on a mission and one angel was all it took to defeat an entire army you know the scripture has had a great inspiration on my life and it has inspired me to start praying what I call my one angel prayer so now when I have a problem when the when the devil is on my case I had a new prayer I call it my one angel prayer when I when I need the Lord's help I pray Lord I'm asking you to just send one angel Lord I don't need a host of angels all I need is one angel I don't need a few I just need one angel when what Daniel was pulled out of the lion's den he said O king live forever my God have said what angel and have shut the lion's mouth by the way notice was more than one lion lion's mouth what that means one angel can have a multiple threats so when you're besieged by problems and hemmed in on every side just pray Lord just send one angel you know a wife says when your life is in danger ask God to send an angel when you need divine protection ask God to send an angel she says God will send an angel to protect you from harm and danger so when you've got troubles say to the Lord Lord I know round about you throw you have untold millions of angels the Lord I just need one I need an angel who excels in strength I need an angel who excels and wisdom Davis said he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways they shall bear thee up in their hands lest thou dash thy foot against a stone God send me just one of those angels I remember years ago when God sent an angel to my side you see here's ago I was in an airplane crash I was coming over the Cascade Mountains going from Seattle to Spokane it was dark and raining raining heavily and we crashed on the tarmac the FAA investigated and found out that the pilot had forgotten to put the wheels down and we came in to that runway and slammed into concrete and and brothers and sisters I want you to know we could have gone up in a ball of flames but they told us that we didn't catch on fire because it was raining heavily that night and the wet conditions may have doused the sparks that could have ignited the fuel Oh but that's what they said happened let me tell you what happened coming into that Airport I was talking to God you know when that plane is rocking and you can't see you talk to the Lord I was talking to God and I was saying Lord why are you so good to me I don't deserve it and I heard God say to me son no matter what happens I'm gonna take care of you and I believe God saw I was in trouble and you know the Bible says it shall come to pass that before you even call God says and while they yes speaking I will here I believe God sent an angel to protect me and because of that one angel and I'm gonna meet that angel one day I was able to walk away from the wreckage of a plane without a scratch someone said when you're on the King's business it's the business of the King to take care of you Church that night in Judah God sent one angel to deliver his people from the sword of the Assyrians now brothers and sisters from the first day I read this passage of Scripture it moved me it moved me then and it moves me now because you see this scripture for me has prophetic overtone like it was then it is today this is a day of church America is in trouble we are a nation of defiant rebellious non-compliant people we are a nation steeped in immorality mired in confusion possessed by a spirit of hatred and animosity this is a day of trouble we are a nation controlled by a spirit of acrimony dissension and division there's way too much faith in this country this country is in trouble you say the wrong thing on social media and the hate will come at you like an avalanche Church this is a day of trouble politicians dividing us sowing confusion fear and disunity leaders using bigotry and xenophobia to win cheap political victories this is a day of problem Christian leaders so-called Christian leaders lending their support to lies and ugliness and our nation has become a carnival of materialism and deception one day was the only time it's ever happened to me I was on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to see the bell rung for a friend of mine whose business was going public and I got a chance to talk to that gentleman who's on television you know him mad money guy and I said to him you know it's interesting when you ask people to show you their wealth they take you to a computer screen blinking with zeros yeah and the ball zeros the more well and you if you ask them can you transfer a little bit of your wealth share a little bit of your wealth with me they transfer some of their zeros to you and if you say no no I need it in something tangible that I can see and feel and touch they get a piece of paper write your name on the top sign their name on the bottom call it a cheque and hand you paper and I said to him you know it is interesting it seems to me that we have built economic Empires on invisible wealth and only time will tell whether empires built on invisible wealth are even sustainable this is a day of trouble the commandments of God have been set aside neo-paganism is on the ascendancy the fastest-growing religion in America is among people who say they have no religion the social fabric of this nation is on the verge of collapse this is a day of trouble it's also a day of rebuke a rebuke for America this proud nation has been brought to its knees by a pandemic virus the economy we boasted about isn't ATA's this is a day of rebuke how is it that we the wealthiest most scientifically advanced nation on earth could have the most deaths from the corona virus pandemic a hundred and twenty thousand people dead coming from all 50 states all the while a country like Vietnam with none of our wealth and science a country of almost a hundred million people have not had one death my god from the corona virus as much as I love this country that's a rebuke to our nation but not only is it a day of trouble and rebuke it is also a day of blasphemy now what is blasphemy well when I looked it up blasphemy is defined as the desecration and violation what God considers sacred now I'm about to say some things that may be uncomfortable for some but in the wake of the tragic death of George Floyd and must speak the truth I cannot be silent from it's very beginnings America was founded on both Liberty and blasphemy this nation was founded on freedom and hypocrisy we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with rights of life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the same bible that the founding fathers were reading from also said in exodus 21 verse 16 whoever steals a man and sells him and anyone found in possession of him shall be put to death yes that's what the Word of God says that tells me that God sees the freedoms and liberties of every man as sacred and the desecration and violation of human rights the rights of black people that church is blasphemy from the moment the Puritans and pilgrims landed on these shores and many of them were slaveholders they began to torture and kill with savage genocide of fury yes the Puritans and pilgrims they were more savage than those they called savages most of the founding fathers of this nation owned slaves and that's why I think Thomas Jefferson himself wrote one day this is what he said he said indeed I'd tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just and that his justice cannot sleep forever he said the almighty has no attribute which can take sides with us slaveholders in such a contest and then he wrote a change is coming my god he said the Spirit of the master is abating and the spirit of the slave is rising did you know the servant of the law says God keeps a reckoning and a record with the nation's in his books God is the judge of Nations and God will judge America this lamb like beasts with the heart of a dragon has been living under the uplifted sword of divine justice for hundreds of years and soon its cup of iniquity will be filled and that's why I dr. King admonished America be true to what you said on paper he said that the night before he died to America be true to what you said on paper Frederick Douglass he once said the most devout Christians made the most savage slaveholders and he said when it comes to revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy America reigns he says without rival Ellen White says and gospel workers page 141 the inhumanity of man towards man is our greatest sin oh and I got to tell you I love the way Frederick Douglass also said he said that which is inhuman can never be divine Church it is important to know our history and we have to learn how to love this country and hate its sins and hate the blasphemy of racism the blasphemy of racism is sin the founding fathers of this nation they may have been Christians but they were guilty of this sin of blasphemy and since the death of George Floyd many in this country have been doing some serious soul-searching many are asking a question they dare not verbalize the question could this evil this blasphemy that manifested itself on that Minneapolis corner could it be alive and living in my heart today could it be alive and living in our hearts today and you know the scary answer for that question is yes yes listen to what the spirit of prophecy says and when I says Satan takes control of every mine that is not decidedly absolutely categorically under the control of the Spirit of God or Church we are sinful creatures with with racism and Prejudice built in baked into our DNA it is our blasphemy I'm going to share something with you you're gonna find incredible incredible it was August 14th 1862 in the middle of the Civil War some black leaders met together to listen to a proposal by a very important white American he started off the meeting by saying you know as a race you all suffer greatly by living among us while our race he said suffers from your presence in this country whoa he said because of the presence of slavery we have white men cutting one another's throats on the battlefield and in fact without you black folk in this country we would have no civil war and you ought to know he said the men fighting on both sides meaning north and south they don't care for you one way or the other so I think he said it's better for us the two races to be separated and then he said the Congress has given me money to begin to move all black people from this country and move them to Panama in Central America if I can get a sufficient number of you willing to go with your wives and children I'll make sure that you are well companies company them yeah that's what he said I'll make sure you get paid well Church the place of that meeting was the White House and the man with the Panama plan was none other than Abraham Lincoln yes even our emancipator's who were racists racism is blasphemy and it is alive and well in the hearts of men today sometimes over and violent sometimes subtle and yes still dangerous still dangerous when their man went to a convention where George Washington Carver was going to be speaking and giving presentations and when he arrived at the hotel he saw a black man standing there and he said here boy helped me carry my bags on the elevator of the man bragged about his accomplishments in science while George Washington Carver stood there quietly holding his bags in the room the man handed kava some money for a tip I don't want it Carver said why I said the man because I don't need it by the way the man said I never got your name he said I'm George Washington Carver the man was terribly embarrassed and he said I'm sorry I didn't realize who you were you were the reason I came to this conference I wanted to meet you and listen to you speak why did you help me well said kava from all I could tell you need L Church racism is America's haunted house built over centuries a house the needs to be dismantled racism is a blasphemous tuned relic of a demonically inspired theological scholarship and it is the cause of much trouble in the world and that's why this word from God still speaks this is a day of trouble and of rebuke and a blasphemy the children are come to the birth and there is not strength to bring forth the time has come for us to pray for their remnant my brothers and sisters they are three perspectives of the Renmin three perspectives and whichever perspective you believe just know none of them will save you only the righteousness of Christ can save you in the first perspective you have what I call a numerical remnant that's what we are as a church did you know that as 7-day Adventist all of us put together black white brown Asian Hispanic all of us put together we're still a numerical remnant a small minority in this land and then you have what some theologians call and a scatological remnant you know those this small group of believers who believe in the third angel's message who believe in and are looking for the return of Christ those who join the church they are considered part of the eschatological remnant and then there is what I call the spiritual remnant those who in that character resemble reflect and reveal the character of God the spiritual remnant they are the true witnesses of the Living God the last generation of the church on earth now hear me now you can join the numerical remnant and still be lost did you hear what I just said you can join the eschatological remnant and still be lost you can have your name on the church rose and be numbered with the eschatological remnant and still be lost the only way to be saved is to be numbered with the spiritual remnant the remnant who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus here's what Ellen likes if she says notwithstanding the spiritual darkness and alienation from God that exists in the churches which constitute confusion and Babylon she said the great body of Christ true followers his true followers the spiritual remnant they are still she said right now in the communion of other churches so let's be clear not everyone who is part of the eschatological remnant a part of the spiritual remnant and God has not yet gathered his spiritual remnant right now his spiritual remnant are in many of the churches stretched around the globe oh but the time is now at the time is here for the remnant to rise we need to pray for the remnant because God has a job for the remnant to do God has called and commissioned the remnant to give the last message of mercy to the world and right now the numerical remnant we we are we were in feeble right now the eschatological remnant we're weak we don't seem to have the strength and the creativity to push our way to the end the children come to the birth but there is not strength to bring forth did you know that last year our church in America grew an average of about one member per church per year that's what all our Crusades all our seminars all our buildings all our money all our electricity and yet all we could bring in was one Church in every church one member per church per year and did you know that we are no longer winning in any significant numbers young people all indigenous native-born Americans or any color into the church the children to come to the birth but there's not strength to bring forth brothers and sisters the regional work was built to reach the black people who live in this country but in many places were not for the foreign-born Adventists in America in some places there would be no church foreign-born blacks make up less than 10% of the black population in America but in some conferences they make up 95% of the membership the children are come to the birth but there is not strength to bring forth the next quote I want to share with you is a most sobering quote here's what Ellen White says she says the powers of hell are working with all their ingenuity to prevent the proper mission of the last message of mercy among the colored people are black people of this country or Church we cannot build a strong future for the church on only 10% of the population of people who look like us in most of our churches the average attendance is pitiful while the average age of those who attend is over 60 the children are come to the bath but there is not strength I have a strong belief that God is going to allow us as a church in this country to dwindle so to become so much a numerical remnant that we will have no other choice but to come together and coalesce together and press together and work together for our survival he said if my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land you know we're having a hard time getting people into church and and now with this virtual church is going to become even more difficult in the future there five reasons that we used to get up on a Sabbath morning and get behind the wheel of a car and drive to a building we call church those five reasons were fellowship instruction inspiration transformation and service but they're all being digitized today 80% of young people's fellowship is digital they tell us that's why teenage pregnancy is down in America because you can't get pregnant FaceTime instruction most of the universities are going virtual you don't have to try to a building to get instruction transformation inspiration inspiration if you've got twenty people by your house and you want them to have a shared moment of inspiration you don't start counting keys and how many seats you have you can put it up on the screen and everybody will be inspired we still kind of think you got to come to the building and walk down the aisle to be transformed but I gotta tell you I preached and and there people who are listening now whose lives are being touched I've seen people call me and say we were 2,000 miles away watching the service and when you made the call we got up and walked down to the television and got on our knees and yes service all that's being digitized our approach to evangelism no longer works because historically we baptize people who already have a reverence for the scriptures on the printed page but now that we are in a post paper era we do not know how to persuade a generation that is ostensibly biblically illiterate and has no reverence for scriptures on a printed page oh but I want you to know even as weak as we are we need to pray for the remnant for God has called his remnant to do an important work in these last days the servant of Lord says today this is what she says today the remnant people of God are to proclaim his name by proclaiming the last message of warning the last invitation to the marriage supper of the Lamb God has a work for the remnant it's time for the remnant to rise and live out its calling to proclaim the last message of warning and mercy to this dying world it is the last message of mercy check this out the servant of God says the last message of mercy is not our 28th fundamental beliefs oh no here's what she says in Christ object lessons page 416 the last Ray's a merciful light the last Ray's a merciful light the last message of Mercy to be given to the world is a revelation of his character of love the children of God are to manifest his glory and the glory of God is his character she says in our own lives and in our character we are to reveal what the grace of God and His righteousness has done for us church is time to pray for the remnant to rise before the final visitation of God's judgments upon the earth there will be among the people of the Lord a revival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since apostolic times the spirit and power of God will be poured out upon his children pray for the remnant for the Lord shall rise upon thee and his glory shall be seen upon thee church to be a Christian means to be christ-like and rest assured God will raise up in these times in these last days a remnant who resemble reflect and reveal the glory and the character of Jesus God is saying to the remnant in his word and is in the remnant in this world arise shine for thy light is come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee Church God wants his remnant people to rise we've we've got a job to do we are to give the last message of warning to this world we are to tell the world that Jesus left the glorious incessant praise of angels Jesus was born as a babe in the clutches of poverty Jesus he divested himself of glory encumbered himself with our hue frame clothe himself in our flesh Jesus chose the way of the cross and gave himself for us we are called to tell the world that with his body he bridged the chasm between righteousness and sin with his body he made a way across a Great Divide on on Calvary he commended and proved his love towards us on Calvary he hung there despising the shame he lifted he let himself be be tortured and crucified and died his comments in the Crimson Tide on Calvary he let his heart be crushed and broken and he died for the undeserving he died for the unworthy he died for the ungrateful he died for deceitful brazen people like you and me all but early in the morning on the first day of the week he heard the voice of an angel saying son of man that father call it the early Sunday morning when the Sabbath had ended he was awakened from death's slumber and he came out of the grave in the grip of resurrection power and he did it all for you and for me he came up out of the grave so that we could be restored and redeemed from the penalty of sin and rescued from the power of sin so that we could be restored into the image and likeness of the character of the father and all he asks is that we respond to his gift of salvation with love and obedience obedience to his law conformity to his character or Church all of us every day can grow to be more christ-like oh yes do you respond two offenses and when people have offended you with passion or aggression Jesus can help you respond with passion but never aggression or did you hear me Jesus can help you learn how to respond with passion but never aggression and through his power you can have the mind of Christ the temperament and attitudes of Christ and you can have it all day hallelujah every day and no more excuses higher than the highest human thought can reach is God's ideal for his children godliness God likeness is the goal to be reached church it's time to pray for God's remnant people to rise and shine and to learn how to be members of the spiritual remnant all we have to do is put on the character of Christ and all the dimensions of his character all of them are gifts gifts from God to us praise the Lord as I close I want to share with you a poem I read where a man said I was walking down life's pathway not so very long ago when I looked up and saw a sign heavens grocery store I got a little closer and the door swung open wide the next thing I knew I was standing there inside I saw a host of angels they were standing everywhere one handed me a basket and said my child go shop with care everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store and what you couldn't carry out you could come next day for more well first I got some love was on the same
