[Music] what drives you what is it inside of you defuse your purpose your passion the road is paved with dreams and ambition what compels you to fasten your seat belt and start your ignition your compass is your intention blazing trails from the city to the great outdoors is the mission the charge grabs your engine new sights and landscapes fill your vision whenever you want to win you win and between the lives like mines find your light easy to recognize is there the coach and community is formulized new ideas I realize the wheels turn the road bends in time complete strangers become best friends here between the lines my pad fries 17:18 Subarus I've owned nothing but it was because people apply us safer than ever just by walk there's something special about subaru the subaru under is pretty diverse I cannot believe that this car brought all these people together you could not know somebody just because you drive the same car it's like we've known for years car breaks down or someone stopped to help people out driving a Subaru Drive you down the road see a fellow Subaru driver he gives a little feast you get a little sign everyone's like what's up I don't even know who these people are it's such a distinct sound you know exactly what car that is that's what it's all about it's about the people all about family really family is important and this is a really big family it's family that's a Subaru when I was thinking about shooting the Subaru documentary earlier in 2016 I was talking to my colleague and he said forget about what people are gonna think forget about what you're afraid of just shoot it here we are months later we're in Philadelphia International Airport we're shooting with Subaru of America tomorrow which just blows my mind how incredible this whole journey has been Subaru is the Japanese word for combine or unite if you'll notice the star cluster represents the five companies that came together in 1953 to form Fuji Heavy Industries super America is the importer and distributor for Subaru vehicles for the United States there were two founders of the company Harvey Lam and Malcolm Bricklin and when they first started importing a vehicle to the United States it was the rabbit scooter the rabbit scooter was a significant vehicle because it was the first clutchless transmission scooter from Japan the 360 began production in 1958 and it was a response to a need for the Japanese people to have an economical vehicle that was also economical to operate the next vehicle after the 360 was the Subaru ff1 this was a significant vehicle for Subaru because it was the first Subaru vehicle with the boxer engine some people call it a flat for some people called a pancake engine but the official terminology is horizontally-opposed all of our cars have a boxer engine and everything except for BRZ which is kind of a special case with the boxer engine being lower keeps more of the weight down low in the car and the lower the weight is in the car the less the car is gonna tilt this you know engine architecture has the advantage of letting you put the all-wheel-drive system in such a way that it's completely symmetrical which is very efficient and then we have our ring shaped reinforcement frame which are very very strong really kind of almost like a cage around the passenger compartment to protect against a side and rear and in nearly any collision my name is Tom doll I'm the president and chief operating officer for super of America Lovitz makes subaru subaru is really what this brand encapsulate it's really what it's all about when they think of subaru what do they think of I would like to think that they think of here's a company that truly cares about its customers it cares about its environment it cares about making a positive impact in the world [Music] we have a business that is completely built on passion and performance and motorsports and Subarus when I got involved with rallying I wasn't able to do that finances were difficult and it was very challenging and I still had a lot to learn at that time I went home for about a month and I thought about what I really wanted to do and this was what I really wanted to do so I came back with a new passion and new Drive and new commitment and I had already been doing it for a long time but now it was fully solidified there was no other option and was calling me back and that's just like you are gonna do this [Music] everybody here in the company they wouldn't be here if they didn't believe in the sport and the excitement of driving and in what we're all working for we give them the opportunity if they don't enjoy what they're doing this isn't the flights it's hard work and a lot of dedication and it's either inside you or it's not that evolved into explaining the passion of rowing now rallycross and actually the Subaru brand it all rolled into the same thing everybody here is talented in their own way whether they're you know a welder and a fabricator or marketing person or an engineer or technician this group of people we've assembled right now today is amazing but what we ask of them you can't always buy you know we can work till 10 or 11 o'clock at night and at 7 o'clock in the morning they're walking through the door with a smile on their face ready to do it all again that's one of the key goals enjoy what you do and explain it to other [Applause] [Music] [Music] now the best thing about rally is that the amount of changes different services we drive on now we never know what we're going to experience [Music] everybody here just respects everyone they just love the support it's mostly just kind of a race against nature it's not really about the fastest car it's kind of whoever's got the biggest balls I guess rally it all started out it's one of the oldest forms of motorsport proudly so awesome because it's not just an individual sport it takes a whole team I mean to have a co-driver that you trust with your life if he missed calls to note you know standing it off a cliff we're down in the woods or a lake or anything it's snowing it's raining it's sometimes it's sunny it's hot in the car you roll the car the fans push you back over everybody's here because they'd love to be here no one's here you know because they have to be here because the money I mean these guys most of the guys build their own cars they work on their own stuff and you know that's how they they make it to the rallies and it's pretty cool to share that with everybody [Music] we're Cottrell Valley it is one of the longest events of the championship you have a very very dedicated group of people who've been running this for a very long time without the volunteer base that we have without them we really wouldn't have this event I came here three and a half hour drive and I'm out here right now from Olympia Washington so and I came through five this five hour drive today we made it boy say what's so great about rally and I'm like if you're not part of it you'll never understand the culture of the friendship there's very few sports where your biggest opponent will tow you to the finish line even if that means that you know you're gonna end up winning the event so it's kind of cool that everyone just helps each other and it's it's family hello I'm Jason Penske with engineering explained that we are in Los Angeles at Red Bulls Global RallyCross [Music] what rally is and what rally crosses they're not two different forms of motorsport rallycross cars have to go on the dirt and tarmac the fans are gonna have the most entertainment out of everyone here the engineers and the mechanics they're gonna be working pretty hard because you've got contact which is like almost encouraged inches ahead of this one this card's you know two feet ahead of this one who's gonna finish first rallycross especially GRC it's not even really side by side it's full contact you know it's rough out there you've got to get a good start you've got to be up the front otherwise you're gonna get hit it's really exciting as a viewer because it's not you know the same monotonous thing happening I'm Chris Atkinson I Drive the Subaru Rally Team America and the 55 STI behind me here in GRC rally drivers pretty suited to rallycross the difference here is the so intense so short where rallies a bit more of an endurance sport still you're driving flood out but you do it over a longer period here you know it's all down to the start all down to one lap on qualifying you know you make one mistake you're at the back of the field the pressures maybe even a little bit higher here in rallycross you've got to prepare setups ride then you go for it [Music] [Music] three I was thank you had to do her genetics and 1993 Mitsubishi and Subaru both came out with her platforms the STI and the Evo and since that point once they entered World Rally Championship they really dominated the sport I picked an Evo it just it was a calling you just have that rival II yeah we get along with each other but at the same time we might secretly not that way I look at it is I think evils are better and SC has a very nice but they're also our worst enemies at the same time I mean you gotta give credit where it's due but to be over everything when you start looking at where our performance division came from came from rally I think the rivalry for Subaru and Mitsubishi really started in rally with Tommi makinen representing Mitsubishi and Colin McRae representing Subaru McRae and makanan pushed the cars to their limits and with that engineers were able to learn how to go ahead and make adjustments to the car and really create a successful platform when you look kind of this battle between Evo and SGI there was something that's brought up through the market yeah they were the only only two cars that all-wheel drive in these turbocharged engines Colin McCrea put Subaru on the map and if it wasn't for him we would not have the cars that we have today even as evil if you also respect STX we don't really think about it as an Evo or STI set apart you drive by an Evo you drive - yeah you give them a peace sign you know doesn't really matter as long as you guys have that common interest and that respect for each other that's all it really matters you know you guys are all coming together for one same thing which is cars 22b it's one of the rarest Subarus ever made this was commemorate the World Rally Championship with Colin McRae an amazing performance car for its day essentially it was a supercar killer that you could buy for a lot less money if you could get ahold of one at a time it's kind of the Holy Grail when you look in terms of collecting an STI is if you have one of these in your collection you know you've you've won the lottery it's it's not a thing about money because they're just hard to find [Music] [Music] [Applause] hopefully it'll sound better [Music] mikono convento de festival in the world my name is Robert champion I'm the Event Director of soup events we're here at wicked big meet 2016 in Stanford Connecticut at Stanford Motor Speedway it's a very big day for everybody we're here showing off a whole bunch of Subaru and STI historical vehicles we wanted to show to the enthusiasts and just get a lot of folks excited see stuff they don't normally see [Music] literally the best Subarus that were ever made all side-by-side flown in from Japan pulled out of their Museum in New Jersey it's wild what they bring out here [Music] well wicked big meat is I mean it's in the name it's wicked big you got awesome people from all over the country really to see all the cars to see the line to when everybody's gallery together at the exhaust comp see all those people together it's like this is not a car show if I showed you a photo you would think it's a concert or something that's one thing that's special about the Subaru community is everyone's tight-knit everybody knows each other driving down the road you see a fellow Subaru driver you get a little piece you get a little sign you know it's the family it's a lifestyle you know and if you're not part of it then you're missing out big time you know I just hope that everybody else out there that doesn't have a car passion has something else that brings them together [Music] I think the thing that stands out to me the most that I've learned as a result of doing these events for so many years it's actually an original slogan it was coming for the car stay for the people which is you end up in a parking lot with someone with a Subaru and you're in your Subaru and you immediately have a friend by default you know and relationships build and you got best friends for life this is just like a big example of that very important friendship dynamic that's what I think is ultimately the best part about these events [Music] [Music] [Music] today was the first time that we actually rolled out as a full crew and we hit Times Square and which was an easy fighting light stuffed and right fighting traffic agents left and right try to respect the law as much as we could and Jan unfortunately got a summons for being in the middle of the street here's a ticket it's unfortunate super unfortunate the shot was dope the shot wasn't awesome right when I got to the other side of the street these two cops came up to me and like immediately just bodied me and wrote me a ticket and I was shocked because everyone else is walking well yeah Jack got ticketed by the cops so we were just waiting for someone to get ticketed but we never expected Jan to get sick so we definitely got pulled together and we would put in money try to take care of your ticket cuz we're family and if anyone else got a ticket we will do the same thing for them when we go somewhere we actually we become one so regardless of any actions that one person does we all unfortunately gonna pay the consequences we basically take care of everyone who gets a summons if it's 40 of us one person gets pulled over we split the defining 40 we just try to be as united as possible that's a real life so this is the cash as she raised I can't thank them enough for even giving me the opportunity to film with them so blessed such great people such a crazy family to be found city panel I was a little Lawson struggling on my profession as a photographer and the filmmaker it was a wild dream that my guy was definitely living and slowly you know every month was a hint of your on your right track keep doing what you're doing being creative and creating content for people it's fun it's it's interesting but at the end of the day like I come home drained with nothing that's really personal to me I felt like it was time for me to put my voice out and my Subaru car community is really something special that's unlike a lot of car cultures the people in the subaru community have such warm hearts I feel and that's what I wanted to show you know and surround myself with the people that have the same passion as me and with the same heart as me and and I think it's about time and I've just been surrounded by so much support it was a personal investment for me to put in my heart my time it's my first personal piece that I want to put out running of the bike shop it allows me to be able to kind of pick and choose my schedule and working four days a week and taking the middle of the week off and then like as far as against planning trips is more of just anything that's not the normal I guess of your your city living been in the biking my whole life started when I was a little kid kept riding until I was till now I rode bikes I guess I you could say like a semi-pro level traveling and riding a bike crashing and almost killing myself to getting insurance money and buying my first Subaru and cutting back on the bike riding and enjoying more of the the auto world the safer type of a living and fun um I don't have a set way to go I keep most of my basics on my car on my tent hammock you know sleeping accommodations you know water or food so if I see somewhere I can just set up shop I can hang out there if it's a a spot where there maybe as a hot spring or something in that area then yeah I'd drive to that you know that location all park kind of get my basic set up get my backpack set up get my my gear bag going and in experiencing whatever it is that's out there and hoping my car makes it and you shouldn't be restricted you shouldn't be sent into one path where you just get up go to work 9:00 to 5:00 every day and your days off you sit at home you're watching TV and you do nothing and you know you all you do is play video games all day long you know I guess you have your zombies that want to do that then you have the other ones that want to live a little go out and see what's out there and I don't how you want to put it yeah freedom we are in the Lucerne Valley in California soggy dry lakebed there's really not much around here just a very empty dry lakebed with a few small little I guess Hills mountains um kind of surrounding it no wildlife nice open field to play and kind of do what you want you know my traveling is mmm 90% would be out by myself enjoying the freedom of being out of the city and out of the chaoticness of the craziness the noise it's more of the thrill the adrenaline rush of being out in the middle of nowhere surviving living not knowing what's around every corner what's going to happen that night once my bike riding I had a maybe back in 2011 I had a good accident out filming uh put me in a coma for a week woke up from that coma and had a new realization that um you know life is short and you know you never know what will happen so it's like one of those things I was just like well I need you know kind of get out and see more things and do more things that it pretty much just turned into quitting the bike shop job and uh kind of traveling full-time being out on the road you know I kind of would you know make ends meet of a of cooking campfires getting the full experience and learning to live and survive on my own end up here and up there find an odd job here I mean I've always worked on my hands done construction if you're not working you're not scared of it you just know you can look for there's always somebody looking for you know good help somewhere and it's got to help support me so I've pretty much been able to live on the road which live out of the car for the past year it's kind of what I found as my my escape so when it got time to retire my little Saturn Vue wasn't that hard of a choice and as soon as I got behind the wheel of that on the lot WRX I know this is the car [Music] it's a perfect car I can't think of any other car I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of other cars I had a 914 Porsche I've had front engine rear engine mid-engine all these different cars but the one that I truly love next to my first car because that's the car that you dream about to own that very first car that was perfect but then to find another car that recreates that same feeling and image yep it's this Subaru that's the car that I dream about always known about Subarus I've always known about WR X's and I always thought that that was a car that was unattainable these are great cars running on dirt roads and out in the country and fans inches away from from the racing I thought there's this exciting stuff but that was that wasn't there until my sister called me one day she says your birthday is coming up in October I am paying for you to take a one-day rally course at dirt fish so we show up and they bring out the WRX is the STI is that they had so I Here I am going to do rally driving which is completely different and it was an unbelievable day my name is Adam shires I'm here at dirtfish rally and I'm here to kick up some rocks with some real wheel tire [Music] what I hope to learn is just to be able to handle a track like this you'd see any sport and the pro athlete makes it look so effortless I'd like to have at least a little bit of technical skill I'd like the game more so I think I'm gonna need to learn confidence we've seen the limits in that vehicle race whoa hey I know there's a lot more that goes into this all I'd like to do is just hit top speed and hit a turn that I I wouldn't really expect to hit dirtfish is about for one sharing the sport of rally and it's also something that's incredibly different from the normal type of racing that's in the u.s. it doesn't matter what discipline someone comes from in terms of driving whatever we can teach them is going to be better than they were before and that's that's pretty darn cool why do we choose Subaru we're looking for a turnkey product that was something really cool it was a high level of performance you could jump into a full proper car right off the bat we're coming back from lunch we are in part two of day one all these different elements that they're slowly teaching us about this is the real deal I mean you get the whole day immersion you actually get taught how to drive you are literally hitting the ground running so you think you know how to drive just because you can hit a freeway and this is driving a whole new life a completely different skill set that otherwise I wouldn't have had I didn't try this today coming into this it's it's funny when they tell you whatever your instincts are as far as driving is concerned you have to forget it you want to come in with preconceived notions and I know what I'm doing and whatnot but you got to humble yourself first to learn something new I think the hardest thing in life is for people to constantly take on a new train of thought it's always it's always a roadblock for people but I think the point is just to always expand your growth and if you don't then you typically get stale staying curious about the world and always growing yourself is a responsibility as an adult it's it's how we shape the future [Music] and you graduated you made it you survived I was three days short of reaching one year with my last car that light kills me I was like man I'm so stupid I couldn't even make it to one year of ownership with this car I told myself if the opportunity presented itself I'd go at it again and I'd get another Forester and this one I would take care of wouldn't be a stupid like like I was on the road during that time I ended up finding this car and so it's everything just kind of fell in the right place I was definitely blessed with with the way things lined up you know during the accident and in afterwards the day of the accident I was I was actually cruising with it was quite a few cars it was an awesome day you know it was a nice relaxed cruise no one was doing anything stupid we ended up going we headed you know she started at the bottom of highway to Angeles Crest Highway and made our way up and we got worried that up ahead the road was closed and so that was pretty much the endpoint of the cruise most people turned around to go back downhill my friends told me that the road closure wasn't too far ahead so I was just you know I was curious and I wanted to go see you know what it looked like it rolls down there so I will my buddies Johnny and Chris along with me and they followed me as we drove towards the closures I'd say it no more than a mile and a half further up I was in the wrong mindset you know I the tunnels were here and I had a lot exhaust and wanted to hear it you know Rumble and and scream just because they echo and I didn't have full focus on everything and that's that's when I ended up causing my combs Ranch to make a phone call to emergency you know once I went over the edge oh no that that's the the popular quote that people poke fun at me for what that was I was really like oh no I'm gonna like oh no they shouldn't be happening oh no I'm gonna I'm gonna die like I'm gonna I'm just gonna roll all the way down and never be heard from again he called in to me and we had just like crawled in bed and the phone rings I have to talk to you about what happened so you know as a mom oh my god what is the problem he said that he had fallen off a cliff with his car yeah I'm okay my car's demolished I was upset I was scared I was in tears and he started crying and I started crying again and I said you know what Subaru can be replaced you cannot what about this accident that Jimmy just went through and what about his life going forward and he now became someone on a mission about a year later to share it with the world and say hey as good as you think you are you're not and I think that the community of Subaru supported him I'm glad to me still with us spirit God got his attention and kept him here with us for his journey and for the world and he is sharing his talent with the world his vision in the form of photography [Music] every time I see my car is just you know it just feels like like I want something even though I didn't know it's my car but it's just something to come home to to smile to you know it's almost like part of the family for me in 2005 when I bought my 2006 WRX STI I've been having you know the greatest time and I couldn't have made a better decision it's an object it's a vehicle it's a car but it's more than that to me 12 years of my life and ever since then I'm still modding it's my drug I put my personality into it I wanted it to be something of my creation like my art piece my name is Ivan cassava am i ulnar Achim or spores Rema a lot of pride to be part these eggs that he's been having I'm always being considered myself but probably my work and see that he's getting recognized it's just a great pride for me and I feel proud that he's really taking all this out Wars because he's a servant I've only been competing for the last two years I never really in my head imagine creating a car for a show about to get judged by Subaru summer solstice 2016 you have to mod your car for yourself if you don't like it and other people like it that's not the part that you want to mod custom mounts here press the mouse in the back these are Moroso cat-scans dual cash cans regular people that are not in this lifestyle don't really understand and of course you know modifying cars it's never never cheap they think that you know we just blow money or the the parts just come out of nowhere we all work really hard at different jobs and of course you know our spare time we we modify our cars people always ask me wouldn't you want a new WRX STI a new a new car or whatever but no I really don't have that feeling of wanting a new car you could offer me a brand new STI and I still would not choose one because it hasn't been touched by me all the effort and the blood the sweat the people that I've met along the way is what makes my car my car hopefully as long as I have that strength and endurance to keep going then that's what I'll do they'll keep going [Music] [Music] hi I'm Craig Donnelly president of VBS of America and today we are at the 2016 SEMA Show so this is our 29th year participating in the show this is the show's 50th anniversary so I think roll off the Mokka branch SEMA is a big event on the on the show calendar SEMA is an opportunity for us to showcase our brand what we're doing and what we're going to be doing it's awesome and I feel very fortunate to be at my 12th SEMA as an enthusiast and also working for the company pretty much the largest convention of aftermarket products in the world so if you want to display new products this is the place to be really for the automotive aftermarket you know to see the show grow every single year I have an outlet for my enthusiasm and then to see other people that have that same passion just incredible Subaru has begun the relationship with Brembo when certain models required a more advanced braking solution they develop a system together with Brembo as a company and the reason being is because Subaru is taking the cars to the next level the power was greater the ability of the driver was able to use the car so when Subaru reached a certain point they knew that the braking system had to match what the car was able to do VBS started back in 1970 and when we began the company when it started it was a racing and performance company aftermarket original equipment was not part of the equation then later it progressed into well can you build wheels for road-going cars and so when Subaru was building their highest level performance cars an STI they went to BBS to have a real performance product made you know most cars tend to keep all four wheels on the ground most of the time but a Subaru STi is something that maybe you're only on two wheels we understand the performance level that's required and also tolerances the nice thing with the aftermarket side of things we're able to take what we know about these cars so in the case of the STI we know how that car reacts we're in the aftermarket community so none of us really like stock we've all want to do fun stuff to our cars we want high performance we want options [Music] hi I'm Sun King I was an actor The Fast & Furious franchise I played haunt it's an honor for me to be here because you know as a car guy this is the mecca driving by yourself you know it's a memory you keep to yourself and it's just about you if you're passionate about something go share that you know don't keep it in the garage and then once it's just for yourself what are you gonna share this you can share this with the people out here like these people they come here to support I get a lot of people asking like you know how could I get in this position I cannot stress enough really like dig down and learn get your hands dirty go buy a cheap car break it your willingness to learn is gonna be dependent on your mode of transportation you need to get this thing fixed and the feeling of doing something and doing it yourself and doing it right is unbeatable you know if you want something bad enough dive in headfirst you can have a bone stock impreza or a legacy it doesn't matter you know just get in there and get dirty and learn and ask questions anybody could come up to me ask me a question and I will probably talk your ear off I just I get so excited about this kind of stuff [Music] [Music] I'm Sam from ops of lifestyles we're out here today at Chino California I read the beautiful Yanks a museum we're all about grassroots today we're all about the community we're all about making sure that someone can have a great time without really breaking the wallet we make sure that we're able to like present a venue for people to come out and still be able to to tears to toes to laugh to play bring their family and we actually accommodate to all wheels in mind you know bringing it representing the awesome lifestyles of any wheels driven when I first started we started off in a parking lot once upon a time you know we used to do events out in out in Downey California you know we were just some car guys you know we wanted to come out have a good time and be able to chat when we came out of that was the realization that people were intimidated but as soon as you park your car in if you have the audacity the cojones to say hey how are you how quickly people are willing to reciprocate the the greeting people are willing to say how are you back and you know sometimes you need you need an advocate someone that's willing to say hey man I got you let me introduce you to these people how was the icebreaker I went around and I started telling people hey have you met this guy have you met that guy and people took a liking to that I didn't look at car meets anymore as if to tip to go car mean I looked at it on network gathering everybody should network I mean you never know I mean Joe Schmo over here it could be you know an electrical engineer and you could be fresh out of college and he could be looking for an assistant and them now you made that bridge people say hey you guys are car guys you guys don't know any different but everybody here is educated everyone here is some kind of beast in their own world and we're having so much in common why because we were able to bring down our walls and people don't realize that just because it's cars that's your gambit that's your icebreaker that's the common ground and it's okay we've created a whole new industry a whole new atmosphere the car industry has evolved so much in the past ten years I mean you can go anywhere from California to Florida to New York and you'll realize hey man if I just was brave enough to shake your hand and say hey bro I respect what you do how far that goes [Music] if you love it and you know that you're all about it like it just gravitates you created your own universe and that universe will gravitate around you and it will supply you of your necessities what you need because you believe in it so much it's that third eye mentality [Applause] all those stories that you hear growing up if you love something do it if you love something you do it and before you know it it's your life it's your world I'm doing this every day in hopes that people see that it's not about like the money it's not about the bragging rights you know the residual that comes from being able to build something is far greater than being able to charge you 40 60 bucks for a show I'm not worried about your dollar I'm worried about the residuals that compliment and what are those opportunities job placement you know that's one you know being able to be trusted on a project you know I want people to know that I am that guy that'll deliver something I'm here to give you a venue to have a good hand and as simple as that sounds that really is the base of why I'm here today we're out here in Big Bear we're just on some dirt roads you know doing a little something different rather than taking pavement roads and we're just out here exploring the back roads until we find our campsite tonight [Music] for the most part we're going off from maps we don't have GPS most the time and it's really just about getting back to basics and enjoying what is out here in nature and what the world has to offer for us [Music] on a typical day trip we usually meet up somewhere in town at a gas station because justice is usually easier to find them on a dirt road plus we can make sure everybody fills up before we hit the trail Melander is a brotherhood made up of outdoorsy Subaru enthusiasts basically and we get together about once a month and just hit trails go camping and we're a bunch of friends at this point so we just enjoy hanging out [Music] so basically the point of mountain roux is to get people to try new things with their cars to get people to get out of town a little bit and come enjoy nature and hang out with friends and find stuff that you couldn't find in just a normal tool drive car cars bikes what it is try to get the last guy if you can make a turn try to wait for the last guy so we don't get lost because that just makes it real confusing and slows things down other than that anything else anybody want to add in well let's head out then all right let's roll right now we have about 27 chapters all over the US we have one in Canada now and also one in Puerto Rico we're really reaching out everywhere and everyone's starting to find out about it and hopefully it keeps growing something bigger we kind of labeled this whole thing as a brotherhood when we come out to these trips because a lot of times we hit train that's a little too hard for Subarus then as just one car the super might not be capable to do it but as a pack you know you have people that have your back some guys will have the tools you need some guys will have the parts you need and basically no super gets left behind we almost always get the super out driving home [Music] so for me personally Mount Drew's kind of me living out different aspects of what I wanted to do in the car industry I'm just finally doing it you know I got from an age where I want have fun and we probably something I did in my life so this is basically what when we started and I've got a lot of people helping me out that believe in what the cause is of just trying to get people out of their houses use their servers if they own it and just get out in camp and just remember what the outdoors is have all about enjoy the basics of life you know leave leave your cell phones at home you get away from your daily routine you kind of lose yourself sometimes when you come out here it's just silence it's you and your car or it's just you and camping and you get to get in touch with it in yourself again it's just a simple life but it's something you should try to do just to reset yourself everyone [Music] there's a whole culture behind Subaru behind the organization behind the brand and one of the big things is giving back and we're here kicking off the share the love event we've gone to the dogs rescue and today we have a dog adoption of it again my name is Marcelo Jain I am the founder have gone to the dogs rescuing her Dondo Beach we rescuing animals from the animal shelter from the hike hello animal shelters so basically we rescue dogs and put them in foster homes get them well have them checked out by your vet and adopt them out we do this because there is almost a 70% euthanasia rate in Los Angeles shelters alone all their dogs are pulled from shelters from from high kill shelters rather so a lot of dogs that normally wouldn't have a second chance at life are definitely given a second chance in the meantime they're waiting in volunteer foster homes so they get loved they get attention they get house training to get crate training they get good food they kind of hold a special place in my heart because three years ago I got introduced to them and that's where I found my buddy here max so James foster for a few months and Max was just loving on him and not willing to accept anybody else James liking what I've just adopted there are a lot of dogs in the world and I think so many end up in shelters and just the right thing to do in my opinion has always been to adopt my last dog was a rescue dog and I you know there's no more joy I think that comes from rescuing a dog from a bad situation one of my favorite quotes and I believe it's from Margery fact one is we give dogs love we can spare space we can spare food we can spare and in turn dogs give us their off plug one of the great things we can do in our life is just live on purpose and find something that connects and that we're able to give back and form a connection to myself I know I can say you know honestly and with wholeheartedness but I definitely found that with this organization on with super Pacific and sterber of America [Music] everybody's we had known each other for three years before we before we got married I met my wife Elaine at work we've been married since 1981 we had our first daughter our oldest daughter Stephanie in 1983 20 minutes after she was born I'm holding in my arms I'm sitting in the chair and I turned to Staffing I say sweetie the right foot is for gas and brake and the left foots for the clutch and she drives a stick shift five years later her other sister was born Jennifer we were surprised she was born with a condition known as thrombocytopenia absent radii also known as star syndrome that condition leaves a child born with frightening Leeloo platelets in their blood supply and basically life threatening at that moment and platelets are the cell in your blood that causes coagulation when you cut your finger and it stops bleeding that's because the platelets in your blood and she was also born with shortened arms we were dealing with two situations and we didn't know what to do but our pediatrician in turn to Children's Hospital Los Angeles said go there when she had to have her first surgery mom gave her unit of blood dad supplied the platelets as far as the platelets go with we were lucky she never had a situation where we needed to give her transfusions so we were lucky in that sense in between the surgeries they would call me and say Steve can you come in and because I despise needles I didn't want to do it but they kept calling me I finally realized on one Christmas they called said Steve would you come and donate it's Christmas I said okay I'll come and donate and then I came back every quarter and then it became every month just kept going back and giving platelets I don't know how he could do it he what has always been scared of needles but somehow just knowing what he was doing and what he was giving he like overlooked that fear I knew but he started donating platelets because of me I didn't want my story to be his story I always wanted him donating platelets to be his thing there's been times with Jennifer when she was growing up would ask the question why am i different why did this happen to me and I said I don't know why it's genetics it just happened but if you weren't born Jennifer who you are I never would have learned about Children's Hospital and I never would have learned that by giving those I'm helping to save the life of a child I'll never know because you were born I could do what I do so thank you for being who you are that's the most significant thing that I can say about my life is that I learned through others the importance of giving I feel like when my dad got his WRX and along with getting a car he gained a community and my dad is always someone who loves being part of the community with with being a part of his family and being a part of donating platelets and not just the employees at the hospital but all the kids and their parents and their families and now he gets to meet all these other drivers who are basically another extended family so I think that's really special that he's gotten that with his car I mean I think you know in the 1990s there was just no support to the gay lesbian community you did hear it on TV and you didn't see it in print and it's almost like it didn't exist my name is MIA and mrs. Jude and I'm Aretha I think I was about 23 when I came out and then I told my family and they were in denial for a while they kept thinking that it was a phase and not until they met her do they realize that this is for everything and not just a face when Subaru came out with subliminal you know messages I know two women on an article separated by their it spoke it spoke to a whole hidden community that we matter they held these focus groups and they noticed that there was a trend happening that it was all women showing up and a lot of them were the head of the household like this is this is kind of fascinating let's target towards them but they didn't want to do it too intense so they just did like little hints where you know the community would know about it to me it just said they're accepting that there it doesn't matter you know your background if you love our product we would love for you to have our product [Music] as we got through the car she's like ah now we have a lez group and in the back of mine I kept thinking hmmm I wonder if that license plate is taken it came up like it's available and atha there's no way they're gonna prove it right when they asked you to describe what does a license plate mean you know was it gonna put like lesbian Subaru on there like that was never going to pass so I thought well I mean it sounds a little French so I said it's the Subaru in French which it is it is and it worked and we got it in the mail [Laughter] I get stopped all the time people honk and they wave and they roll down their window you know well it down there like I just love you in your car and I guess it's kind of like how their ads used to be only some people get it and other people like we don't know what this means so only the cool people get it we all make jokes like oh you know the less rude but it's true there's background there's history it came from something important and they they meant well when they did it and it wasn't offensive it wasn't derogatory it was very smart and very bold [Music] we tried for a very long time to conceive him it took a long time and we would have adopted as well but we wanted biological and I'm younger so we decided to go with mean I've always wanted to be pregnant and it was important for me to have or read on the birth certificate and because we're legally married she's allowed to be it's important for our rights to be protected as a family just in case something happens to me or eat has say over what happens to our son and I know we've been fighting so hard for our rights but we've been fighting just to be normal and if whatever normal is I think it's always important to be yourself you need to be able to be happy and you need to be able to be yourself and not ever hide and it's important for Jude to see that we are true to ourselves not to be cliche but I mean people are people and embrace diversity because otherwise life is so boring you know and who wants to be in a boring life and less colorful yeah we brought rainbow through the world [Music] the rally community is actually a lot smaller than people think so luckily with me doing that and meeting people who know people who know people I think that helps a lot and I moved out here without even knowing if I'd get the job so there was a slight interest so I was like I'm out lots of hard work lots of sacrifice how I got here I'm the first girl for Vermont sports car Subaru Rally Team USA as a technician when I first bought this car I didn't know anything about them and I just knew I was attracted to them the previous owner was a state trooper he would take us up to this the track where the troopers would practice that's actually part of their station in Golden Colorado you would go up there what it was dumping snow and just raced around the snow so it was like ah this is where I want to be this is where I want to go I haven't been doing this since I was little like a lot of people think I was about 20 21 my boyfriend at the time bought at WRX he decided to race hot across his car and we both went for our first time together and I beat him in his own car and I was sold two weeks later I bought my RS swapped it six months after that there was the one time I remember seeing the WRX in a commercial on TV and it was like drifting around in the dirt around a tree what that car that looks like fun that looks like what I want to do I was like you know I like this so I think I'm gonna turn a wrench I went to tech school and when I started working at the Subaru dealership I was six months into school and that's when I really learned about rally racing because it's Subaru that's pretty much but you know what got me here I was reading one of the drive performance magazines that Subaru has and reading about Vermont sports car and actually five years ago I sent a message to one of the guys that worked here asking how to get my foot in the door when I first got into it a lot of people were not willing to help me and a lot of people didn't want to teach me anything and it was really hard to learn and grow and understand my car but you know you grow a thick skin and you learn and you meet those people that are willing to help you and that's when you know you just make bonds with people [Music] being initiated into a group was it's really great I've never had that I was never into a sorority or anything like that so it was different it was it was really fun when you find that group that you really click well with you know you just stick with it and I really click well with these guys so I feel like if people were more willing to help people in the community and give people a chance when they're new you know not quick to judge you know help people you know this is a great community let's keep building it up keep making this a great culture to be a part of this is my dream job so I can't complain maybe they've got me cleaning parts I don't care I want to be able to be told hey I need you to do this and do it without hesitation without being so like does this need to come out before this like I just want to know these cars like the back of my hand I'm gonna hang of it it's my third month I think I'm doing okay the girls want to do this to try to work twice as hard stay focused don't get off-track and you can do it you're married to motorsports [Music] how did I get the Sophie Sophie I was driving through downtown LA and saw a beautiful German Shepherd on the side of the street I wanted a dog at that time he decided to pull over maybe she was a stray maybe she was lost yeah lured her in with some hot dogs that I got from the corner she was with another ciaochao one of her friends she was roaming around with and cha-cha had some hot dogs decided to bite me after I fed it and Sophie ran up to the chow chow barked at it and then came back around to me and just kind of stayed and wanted her I knew I wanted her she was so sweet definitely wasn't the intention of keeping her actually [Music] the time that Sophie came into my life I wasn't ready for a dog Sophie my head it was a little bit of a setback like okay I just gotta clear out time I made time to take care Sophie was a blessing in disguise I had a lot of support from the Subaru community but what really got me through shooting this doc is my family my fiancee the dogs my brother my sister my cousin me and my parents and without them none of this would have been possible from driving 14 hours though Oregon redeye flights to Connecticut red-eye flights to Japan to having family taking care of the dog just so that we can film catch the stories that we needed to living out of our suitcase scrapping money scrapping schedules together just so that we can film catch the stories that we needed to [Music] the stock started in February 2016 almost midway through 2017 I've have probably a couple more shoots left wrapping it all up I was documenting all the shoots for the Subaru doc and everything is great late 2016 sophie was diagnosed with the cancer it's a couple signs out was telling us that she wasn't alright when Sophie got sick all kind of came to a halt it's a little loss priorities started to change trying to make ends meet paying for Sophie's medical bills spending time with her spending time with the family and trying to balance all these Sophie you know wasn't getting any better took her in early 2017 they're saying that she has six months to live we wanted to give Sophie the best quality of life with the time that she has here on earth and with us you know life throws you curveballs and like it checks you sometime you gotta prioritize things and now just trying to spend time with Sophie okay let's go she's definitely a family member just like a little daughter she's always there for me you just wish sometimes like she would understand that you know we love her we don't want to leave so if he gave me the strength and creating this dock showing me that anything's possible in life I don't even know our house in this position right now with the dock and just being so fortunate to travel and meet people and share the stories that I have it's definitely an experience and I'm happy that Sophie's here experiencing it with me fortunate to have these experiences but at the end of the day family matters the most to me don't you just realize that he loves that even more now I'm able to do what I love because of my family then this would have been possible without them just wanna get out of this bed I've made wish I knew where [Music] [Music] [Music] please shining [Music] [Music]
