hmm oh yeah all right [Music] a lot of stuff [Music] good morning great how are you good to see you thank you [Music] good morning oh were they [Music] good morning welcome to holy name of jesus cathedral and mass for the 27th sunday in ordinary time the worship aid can be found on the parish website raleigh cathedral dot org the entrance in is all creatures of our god and king oh [Music] r [Music] six oh [Music] is [Music] is [Music] yes [Music] again [Music] wow [Music] oh [Music] in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit the grace and peace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the unity and fellowship of the holy spirit be with you all well together with all of our cathedral family parishioners we welcome all of those who are pilgrims here with us to this 27th sunday in ordinary time as we come together for holy mass great to have you with us and a special welcome as well to all of us all of those joining us via our live stream i'm monsignor brockman great to have you with us and so as we pause and prepare we do so acknowledging our sins as we prepare to enter into these sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] so [Music] hear me [Music] glory peace we glorify you [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] father [Music] may take away the sins of the world have mercy on away us sins of the world receive our [Music] have prayers on us [Music] jesus christ [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] let us pray almighty ever-living god who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare to ask through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of genesis the lord god said it is not good for the man to be alone i will make a suitable partner for him so the lord god formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them whatever the man called each of them would be its name the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of the air and all wild animals but none prove to be a suitable partner for the man so the lord god cast a deep sleep on the man and while he was asleep he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh the lord god then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man when he brought her to the man the man said this one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh this one shall be called woman for out of her man this one has been taken that is why man cle leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two of them become one flesh the word of the lord so so [Music] may the lord bless us [Music] blessed are you who fear the lord who walk in his ways for you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork blessed shall you be unfavored [Music] your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home your children like olive plants around your table may the lord bless us [Music] behold thus is the man blessed who fears the lord the lord bless you from zion may you see the prosperity of jerusalem all the days of your lives [Music] may you see your children's children peace [Music] [Music] so a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters he for a little while was made lower than the angels that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone for it was fitting that he for whom and through whom all things exist and bringing many children to glory should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering he who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin therefore he is not ashamed to call them brothers the word of the lord [Music] a oh [Music] if we love one another god remains in us and his love is brought to perfection [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark [Music] the pharisees approached jesus and asked is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife they were testing him but he said to them in reply what did moses command you they replied moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her but jesus told them because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment but from the beginning of creation god made them male and female for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh so they they are no longer two but one flesh therefore what god has joined together no human being must separate in the house the disciples again questioned jesus about this he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her and if she divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery and people were bringing children to him that he might touch them but the disciples rebuked them when jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them let the children come to me do not prevent them for the kingdom of god belongs to such as these amen i say to you whoever does not accept the kingdom of god like a child will not enter it then he embrace them and bless them placing his hands on them the gospel of the lord once again renewed welcome to all of our pilgrims great to have you with us here this morning may the lord bless us all the days of our lives that's the psalmist for our psalm response this morning everybody from psalm 128 and it's sung sacred scripture which is why you see the canter leading that in song from here from the uh from the ambo and it gives us a good thought on what it is to be a catholic community of faith not just an interlude between the first and second reading but sacred scripture itself that gives us some wisdom an enlightenment of that key verse may the lord bless us all the days of our life there is a beautiful custom in the hispanic community in fact we had it this morning at the 8 30 mass and as part of our cathedral parish what you see is what's called a presentation it's when a new member of the family is born and the custom is along with others because it's always coordinated their mom and dad at the beginning of the mass just before the sign of the cross will present them in in essence introduce them and ask formally the lord's blessing upon them always looking ahead to their baptism the baptism of the child but very much approaching that sense of wanting the gift of faith and god's blessing brought into this new gift of life precious as it is and not a life that's lived in isolation everybody but one in a place we say we all believe in in a place that is where the community of faith the parish gathers together in holy mother church and to impart to begin to form what we say and believe is also essential the prayer of faith that together with god's blessing on this newborn together with their immediate family their mom and dad and their siblings but also part of the broader community of faith the family that is a parish the family that is a church that sense of the psalmist's prayer being fulfilled may the lord bless us all the days of our life a couple weeks back i received a note from a priest friend of mine who's a monk benedict and monk up at saint vincent's arch abbey in latrobe um some of you know if you've been if you're from around there that even though it's spelled l-a-t they say it as if it's l-e-t latrobe right so father paul taylor is my friend up there he's the president of their college saint vincent college and he sent me a note with this little holy card inside a wonderful little catholic custom that we have to remember a loved one who is now with the lord and this of course was for his dear mom who recently died and he wanted me to have a copy of it so like so many others i could include it in my bible well irene taylor was is her name she had a wonderful phrase that she said uh to her family often she had a big extended family i think she came of maybe one of seven or eight kids i can't remember but she said it very often about what families at their best do for one another three things she would say love them feed them and want them around love them feed them and want them around and i thought you know what not bad not a bad admonition for families to love them of course with an embrace but in it through the gift of faith everybody much more to it than just that to love them as christ loves us in other words to have that sense for them of sacrifice that latin word that word in its latin derivative sacramenture to do a holy thing to see that they have everything to sacrifice for them to see that they have everything they need materially of course but also most precious that they may have the gift which is above all others the gift of faith that that may be formed within them a gift that we know everybody that for us as catholics is everything to love them that was her first point second feed them and of course that doesn't have to do only with what might be a favorite on the dinner table maybe it's your big ziti or like one of our priests that's now retired father of monsignor frank moseline he was known for his pastor burgers right big punk and hamburgers you know you went up there and you didn't eat anything else just one would do it so it isn't just that everybody not just that sense of feeding but also everybody in and through the eyes of faith to foster hunger for the bread that lasts forever fostering that hunger for the bread of life our lord jesus who desires to be ever so close to us that he becomes our bread he gives himself to us so we can take him inside of us in and through the holy eucharist so that we can have him inside in his graces to affect us to guide us each and every day of the week that may be ahead of us second point to feed them now irene on the third point would say want them around it's what families do for one another everybody they are with one another they are caring for one another each in their own way and they are forming in those younger the values that are the most important especially those that are eternal values what's good what is right what is just who we are and who we're not respect for others the dignity of human life from the very moment of conception to natural death and the one from whom all of our blessings that are often more than we deserve the one from whom all our blessings flow our lord himself to want them around is to form that kind of sense of value in and through the eyes of faith and overall love them feed them want them around a fulfillment in a small way an example that the lord may bless us all the days of our lives it's what's in front of every family as you seek to form the gift of faith of those who are have been entrusted to you through the gift of creation and it is in front of us too everybody as a parish family the cathedral parish family and in ways looking in a very special way now of how we may assist moms and dads grandparents too informing their children but also our own continuing formation in our catholic faith everybody so important it is and we do that partially through those intentional actions i mentioned but also we do it by providing the places where we can help that formation to occur this fabulous sacred place beyond blessing and now in front of us as you've been reading hopefully you've seen my video and the others of the various ministries here in our cathedral parish our parish center that's now in front of us we're coming back to it after taking some time obviously that we needed to during coven that's now in front of us in a very significant need and the response to meet that need that we began back in 2019 in the fall the response has been fabulous towards the goal of raising 20 or raising 6 million dollars to build the parish center the response 5.2 million fabulous fabulous and thank you for all of those who sacrificed to do that but here's the thing with that that goal of 6 million and what we've achieved at 5.2 that achievement has been from 10 of our parish family 10 so looking at that here's a thought towards the other 90 and it's a thought that would be one that you wouldn't necessarily think to hear from a pulpit because it comes from the noted american jurist justice william brennan justice brennan wrote this little piece of wisdom he said we must meet the challenge rather than wish it was not before us we must meet our challenges rather than wish they were not before us very good wisdom because when we have any challenge in front of us denial is never the solution always meeting it participation is that solution and so to that end i would invite you at this time to locate in the book rack in front of you this envelope with this blue card and i invite you to prayerfully consider making a gift now maybe you have already made that sacrifice and if you have again my gratitude on behalf of our whole community but i'd invite you as well to consider another because you know as well as i do that life is never just about one singular sacrifice a full life is full of sacrifices now maybe you are perhaps new to our community and again welcome maybe you are a young professional and you've never had to make a sacrifice like this before we have many young professionals as part of our cathedral parish community and you are a precious part of our parish family but maybe you've never had to do that before the never the challenge has never been in front of you prayerfully consider it you may be ready to complete this now or have to take it home and pray about it maybe talk about it with your family but if you're ready now take a few moments to fill it out there should be a pen in there you may have one with you there should be a pen located in the pew you'll also see associated with it the qr code in the upper left hand corner many of you i know uh do a lot of things by electronic means and so that's one that's available for your use so take a moment to fill this out i'm gonna do the same because i'm gonna add to my own pledge and um that i made back two years ago i prayerfully considered it and i can do a little bit more because this is something we need there's only a difference a delta of about 800k and our parish over four thousand families which means probably twelve to fourteen thousand so you divide eight hundred k by fourteen thousand the number gets to be pretty small but make it a sacrifice to the lord take a few moments to fill that out i'm going to do the same here's a place to indicate on here that is your first time pledging or that you are doing an additional pledge so i'm checking that box and then that i'm doing it monthly and then there's a place too if you cannot make a pledge or contribution to the campaign at this time that you'll pledge to pray for its success so place that then uh in the envelope if you would if you're ready to put this in the offertory today seal it up and make it part of how in your own way you are celebrating the fulfillment of what the psalmist led us to pray today may the lord bless us all the days of our life and so let's stand together as we then profess what it is that we believe i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things from a for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate to the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life in the world to come amen as a family of faith as the church let us together offer our prayers to our loving father he embraced them and blessed them for pope francis bishop luis rafael and all clergy and lay leaders who guide us as a family and as individuals in the patterns of holiness of life that they know these those same graces all the days of their life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer the lord god formed for our own renewal especially in the spirit of generosity in our parish family that it may reflect the abundance of our lord's blessings and for all to be baptized and those entering their vocation of life and marriage that god may fashion their hearts unto the life of his own we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer [Applause] the kingdom of god belongs to such as these for all those most vulnerable especially children the inferned and the aged the poor and all those marginalized that on this respect life sunday they may know god's protection and we renewal in our care for all of god's creation most especially the gift of life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer do not prevent them from coming to me for all those in national state and local leadership in government that the gift of god's wisdom and his counsel be upon them especially in decisions which affect the dignity of human life and for all our first responders and military as they defend the gift of freedom and the peace that is ours we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer may you see the prosperity of jerusalem that all those who have died may know the fullness and joy in the life of heaven and in in those in sorrow the blessings of eternal peace and for the parishioners and pilgrims to our cathedral for whom this mass is being offered let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and commit continuing to command our parish our project to the lord i invite you to locate this card in your pew in the book rack in front of you and let us pray together o holy name of jesus above all other names in heaven and on earth you are the glory of the saints the balm of the sick the love of the devout the consolation of the suffering and the hope of all who aspire to follow you oh my jesus be our protector and help that your name may be forever praised as we seek holiness of life as a parish under your patronage guide our endeavors always especially now as we strive to grow in faith and build together facilities dedicated to the honor and glory of your holy name amen god and again as always in many things thank you for your great generosity the operatory hymn is let all mortal flesh keep silence [Music] [Music] is is is [Music] is [Music] r [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] is [Applause] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father except o lord we pray the sacrifices instituted by your commands and through the sacred mysteries which we celebrate with dutiful service graciously complete the sanctifying work by which you are pleased to redeem us through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim [Music] holy holy [Music] and holy [Music] blessed is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and luis rafael our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy
