[Music] so [Music] so [Music] almighty and ever living god we give you thanks for this new day we thank you for the various ways in which you have afforded us to worship both in person and through the online ministry help us to humble ourselves before you quieten our minds open our ears to hear your word open our hearts to receive and yield to your will by the power of the holy spirit unfold your word so it may come alive to us through jesus christ our lord amen [Music] so so [Music] and try him 431 4 3 1. [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] today is the 19th sunday of the pentecost proper 22 year b and our service continues on page 101 after the open end sentence god is spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth blessed be god father son and holy spirit hallelujah hallelujah bless the lord and father and is almighty god glory to god in the highest and feast of his people on earth lord god heavenly king almighty god we worship you we give you thanks we praise you for your glory lord jesus christ only son of the father lord god lamb of god you take away the sin of the world have mercy on us you are seated at the right hand of the father receive our prayer for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory lord be with you let us pray almighty and everlasting god you are always more ready to hear than we to pray and give more than we either desire or deserve pour upon us the abundance of your mercy for giving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and given us those things which we are not worthy to ask except for the merits of mediation of jesus christ our savior who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen he be seated for the ministry of the word a reading from the word of god written in genesis chapter 2 verses 18 through 24 then the lord god said it is not good that the man should be alone i will make him a helper as his partner so out of the ground the lord god formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to the man to see what he would call them and whatever the man called every living creature that was its name the man gave names to all cattle and to the birds of the air and to every animal of the field but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner so the lord god caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man and he slept then he took one of his ribs and closed its place with flesh and the rib that the lord god had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man then the man said this at last is born of my bones and flesh of my flesh this one shall be called woman for out of man this one was taken therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife and they become one flesh the word of the lord the appointed sum 124 this can be found on page 642. if the lord had not been on our side let israel now say if the lord had not been on our side when enemies rose up against us then would they have swallowed us up alive in their fears angered toward us then would the waters have overwhelmed us and the torrent gone over us then would the raging waters have gone right over us blessed be the lord he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth we have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler the snare is broken and we have escaped our help is in the name of the lord the maker of heaven and earth glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy spirit as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever amen a from the word of god written in hebrews chapter 1 verses 1 to 4 and chapter 2 verses 5 to 12. long ago god spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets but in these last days he has spoken to us by a son whom he appointed heir of all things through whom he also created the worlds he is the reflection of god's glory and the exact imprint of god's very being and he sustains all things by his powerful word when he had made purification for our sins he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs now god did not subject the coming world about which we are speaking to angels but someone has testified somewhere what are human beings that you are mindful of them or mortals that you care for them you have made them for a little while lower than the angels you have crowned them with glory and honor subjecting all things under their feet now in subjecting all things to them god left nothing outside their control as it is we do not yet see everything in subjection to them but we do see jesus who for a little while was made lower than the angels now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death so that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone it was fitting that god for whom and through whom all things exist and bring many children to glory should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings for the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one father for this reason jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters saying i will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters in the midst of the congregation i will praise you the word of the lord the gradual hymn 420 420. [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] the lord be with you a reader from the holy gospel of our lord jesus christ according to mark some pharisees came and to test jesus they asked is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife he answered them what did moses command you and he said moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and divorce her but jesus said to them because of your hardest of heart he wrote this commandment for you from the beginning of creation god made them male and female for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh there's no longer two but one flesh therefore while god has joined together let no one separate then the house the disciples asked him again about the matter he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her if she divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery people were bringing their children to him in order that he might touch them the disciples spoke sternly to them when jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them let the little children come to me do not stop them it is such as these that the kingdom of god belongs truly i tell you whoever does not receive the kingdom of god as a little child will never enter it he took them up in his arms laid his hands on them and blessed them this is the gospel of christ [Music] so [Music] i speak the name of god who is father son and holy spirit amen please be seated words taken from our gospel reading for today some pharisees came and to test him they asked is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife during pre-marriage counseling i've often said to a couple it's easy it's easy to get married but it's hard to stay married it's easy to get married but it's hard to stay married it's hard to stay my word well i may have to adjust that statement in light of what's been going on over the last couple of months indeed now into more than a year that it's not only hard to stay married now it's hard to get married and yesterday this was demonstrated in a marriage service of george and joycelyn it's my first wedding to officiate montgomery of course i have also done the wedding here but it's the first time as director of christchurch and unfortunately for george and jocelyn or joycelyn they had to postpone their wedding more than once a number of times a number of times because they wanted their wedding as of course most persons they wanted their wedding to be a joyous occasion not only for the couple themselves but also for family and friends therefore they postpone it once so okay good then it happened again so as i said it's now becoming a real challenge to get married but it'll still always be a challenge to remain married to stay married and that's why this particular text makes people feel a little uneasy but i want us to reflect upon it and to see what it is saying to us where some pharisees came to test jesus and they asked him is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife it is a challenge as i said to get married it's a challenge to stay married but this text i want to help you to understand is not for us to come here and maybe even in this church like george or joycelyn or some other place it could be a garden wedding or some other church but the wedding or sorry the marriage did not work out and because it didn't work out you had to divorce and therefore you may be feeling a little easy and easy by this text but i don't want us to because this text is not to try hopefully and make certain people people feel righteous because they actually happen to be married another person is to feel less than or unrighteous because their marriage did not work out we have to recognize of course that jesus in terms of his ministry was not in this business of trying to help or to force persons the understanding that some people are seen as up and some people have seen this down some people are seen as righteous and some people are seen as unrighteous in fact he was quite critical of those persons who thought of themselves as being quite righteous because those persons who are married and remain married will know this that it is difficult to stay married and svs we gather we have occasions like a marriage or a wedding and the gospel reading for today was the gospel reading selected by the couple yesterday but there are other occasions when persons meet for an anniversary and i'm always reminded of a particular anniversary of a lady who was able to celebrate with family and friends 50 years 50 years uh 50 years of marriage her 50th 20th anniversary and of course on that occasion persons spoke there were speeches toasts etc and this very elderly lady said something has remained with me ever since she said persons will often ask me if in my 50 years if i ever ever thought about getting a divorce and she actually never in her 50 years has ever considered getting a divorce but he said murder murder that is a different matter so those persons of course who are married we know of course as i said we that it can be a challenging time because we're not just to think about what's going on the outward we have to consider what is going on on the inward what is going on in our hearts what is going on in our minds and when we do that then they think that we can hopefully be humble enough to recognize what this particular text is about and not just as it relates to a wedding or marriage but generally speaking as we relate to each other what is going on in our minds what is going on in our hearts because that's what really jesus encourages us to think about focus our attention upon what is going on in our hearts and that's why i want us to think about today the whole question about what is lawful what is lawful it is said that with law it's about drawing lines it's about drawing lines we have a range in terms of our human behavior and sometimes of course in our human behavior we have to be guided and what we should do and hopefully that in doing certain things it will not hurt persons hurt other people and therefore of course we have laws to guide us and help us prevent us from doing sometimes bad things so i'll give you an example about drawing lines in drawing lines for example when some person is driving and down the road now persons who got together and they said to themselves well if you drive your car at high speed of course you're going to in all likelihood not only hurt yourself injure yourself but you're going to injure someone else and therefore driving at high speed is not a good idea so persons got together and they said well look let us draw a line and make the line 60 that that line will say well you can drive in a safe way at 60 it will not be you know not injure yourself or other persons it's about drawing a line that is very good from the point of view that everyone is able to understand that that is the line and the government of course gets out there and they put signs which has 60 with our general rules or 80 when we're on the spring garden highway and therefore a person can look at their speedometer in terms of their behavior in terms of their the foot on their gasoline pedal and say well you know what i'm getting a little close i need to ease off i can't go over the line because if i go over the line for us in our individual context and the other thing that jesus wanted us to do he wanted us again to emphasize that we will never be able to fully follow the law and therefore feel superior to somebody else because not only did he point to the particular direction by saying extreme things he said for example even if you look at a woman lustfully you are committing adultery now for those of us and here we won't say compassion is good for the soul but you know what i'm saying even if you look at someone lustfully you are committing adultery raising the standard so that we have an awareness that no one can fulfill the law he said even if you you've heard of yourself if you're angry you may be going to hell so that we're reminded that we need to rely not on our own righteousness but we need to rely upon the grace and mercy of almighty god every day as he guides us as we fall short as he loves us and therefore he gave to us a real deep awareness of his love for us as sinful human beings and encouraging us to love each other and that's why jesus will say for example forgive not just one time but forgive 70 times seven especially in your relationships 70 times seven but still work it out what is going on in your present relationship because i can't tell you now and i don't think jesus is trying to tell us now as one size fits all or when your marriage is over you'll be able to work that through now it's a very serious matter i should not be taking it lightly but there comes a time sometimes i may be in an abusive relationship or it's just not working out that unfortunately those decisions have to be made but the thing that really has caused me to think about this even some more is that what happens when persons are in a very very contentious relationship even when we're trying to forgive contentious relationship it really has a lot or does a lot to the person themself but another set of persons or persons who are part of that relationship and jesus mentions that in today's gospel the children remember he speaks about the children he says you know the children he loves the children this is the second time he's spoken about the children and we know either way when you're in a very contentious relationship when you're fighting cats and dogs it's not good for the children and likewise even when we divorce is not good for the children and therefore we have to think it through we have to pray it through we have to not beat up ourselves we can't feel righteous towards our relationship towards others but we again seek god's guidance and love and forgiveness as we make the decision in keeping hopefully in god's will amen [Applause] firm of faith now in the words of your nice and creed we believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen or unseen we believe in one lord jesus christ the only son of god eternally begotten of the father god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not me one in being with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven by the power of the holy spirit he was born of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate his supper died and was buried on the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the scripture he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the heart he will come again to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end we believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father for the father and the son he is worshipped and glorified he has spoken through the prophets we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church we acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sin we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen be seated as we bow our heads in prayer we deal
