useful for teaching rebuking correcting and training in righteousness open our hearts to receive your word that we may know you better and be thoroughly equipped for every good work through your son jesus christ our lord amen our first bible reading is from the book of isaiah chapter 25 and verses 1 to 8 lord you are my god i will exalt you and praise your name for in perfect faithfulness you've done wonderful things things planned long ago you have made the city a heap of rubble the fortified town a ruin the foreigners stronghold a city no more it will never be rebuilt therefore strong peoples will honor you cities of ruthless nations will revere you you have been a refuge for the poor a refuge for the needy in their distress a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall and like the heat of the desert you silence the uproar of foreigners as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud so the song of the ruthless is stilled on this mountain the lord almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples a banquet of aged wine the best of meats and the finest of wines on this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples the sheet that covers all nations he will swallow up death forever the sovereign lord will wipe away the tears from all faces he will remove his people's disgrace from all the earth the lord has spoken this is the word of the lord thanks be to god friends we continue in our reading of the psalms and this morning we're at psalm 13. would you read these words with me how long lord will you forget me forever how long will you hide your face from me how long must i wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart how long will my enemy triumph over me look on me and answer lord my god give light to my eyes or i will sleep in death and my enemy will say i have overcome him and my foes will rejoice when i fall but i trust in your unfailing love my heart rejoices in your salvation i will sing the lord's praise for he has been good to me the new testament reading is from paul's letter to the ephesians chapter 2 verses 1 to 10. as for you you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient all of us also lived among them at one time gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts like the rest we were by nature deserving of wrath but because of his great love for us god who is rich in mercy made us alive with christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by grace you have been saved and god raises that with christ and seated him with him in the heavenly realms in christ jesus in order that in the coming ages he might show the impo incomparable riches of his grace expressed in his kindness to us in christ jesus for it is by grace you've been saved through faith and this is not from yourselves it's the gift of god not by works so that no one can boast for we are god's handiwork created in christ jesus to do good works which god prepared in advance for us to do this is the word of the lord thanks be to god i encourage you in your homes to stand with me as we respond to god's word affirming with christians across the ages our confidence in the god who has spoken to us we believe in one god the father the almighty maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen we believe in one lord jesus christ the only son of god eternally begotten of the father god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made of one being with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and was incarnate of the holy spirit and the virgin mary and became truly human for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried on the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end we believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is worshiped and glorified who has spoken through the prophets we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church we acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen good morning let me pray father your word lord is eternal it stands firm in the heavens your faithfulness continues through all generations father be pleased now to take your word and show us the glory of your son the lord jesus christ through the power of your holy spirit amen well at the end of every year most of the major publishers of dictionaries promote their word of the year this word is a term that is designed to encapsulate all the things that have gone on in the year past in 2020 the australian macquarie dictionary had as its word of the year doom scrolling now i had to look that word up but doom's scrolling according to the dictionary is and i quote the practice of continuing to read news feeds online or on social media despite the fact that the news is predominantly negative and often upsetting end quote evidently as australians we have a preoccupation with feeding ourselves the news whether that news is good or whether that news is bad but whether you would describe yourself as a doom scroller or not i think that most of us would acknowledge that we are currently preoccupied with the turmoil of our world whether we are literally scrolling on our devices or whether we're just watching the tv or listening to the radio most of us realize that the world is in a state of turmoil and we feel anxious about it we feel anxious when we are confronted with our own mortality we feel anxious in our world when covet numbers are on the rise we feel anxious that our loved ones are missing out through life experiences be that at through schooling or through holidays we feel anxious about our financial security we feel anxious about this week this month this year ahead of us and i think our world and our culture would acknowledge that as a culture we feel deeply anxious about the future we go to bed anxious we awake anxious we watch the news we listen to the radio and our hearts and our minds are filled with anxiety and we do scroll our way through life wondering where is our hope where is our purpose as the people of god we are not immune from the challenges of this world yet as we come to scripture we find that within scripture that god has provided a provision whereby we can have security and confidence even in the midst of turmoil in a world of anxiety the child of god is actually able to live with certainty and to live with peace but how how can you live with certainty and peace during anxious times how can you live with certainty and peace during anxious times to answer that question we return to our series in the book of isaiah and here the prophet is going to show us and going to give us the provision whereby we can live lives of security certainty and peace even in the midst of a world of turmoil the author will exhort his audience to where they might find peace and by extension where we too might find it now as you open your bibles to isaiah 25 and you look with me i just want to give a couple of bits of background first of all historically isaiah is writing this during the 8th century he's writing to the people of israel and they are experiencing an extended season of anxiety the anxiety that they have surrounds the political circumstances of their day the great country of assyria is on the march and they are becoming increasingly aggressive and they're making their way and they are virtually knocking on the door of israel as they swallow up smaller nations israel is discouraged they're despondent they are filled with anxiety what will the lord do and it's within this historical context that god provides his prophet isaiah who will preach a message that will revolve around two areas judgment god will judge this wickedness and will judge the world of wrong and then secondly related to that on the other side is salvation the great theme of isaiah god's judgment but also god's deliverance of his people that's what's going on historically now contextually as we come to isaiah 25 isaiah 25 sits on the back end of chapters 13 to 23 which focused predominantly on judgments in those chapters god outlines how he will judge the worlds and as he goes through and he provides this this passage of great judgment we then turn to chapter 25 where we get this almost fresh air where god provides this wonderful vision of his salvation and as if as if isaiah as he outlines this message of god says to us yes god will judge yes there is anxiety yes there is difficulty and turmoil in the world but it's almost when we get to 25 chapter 25 that he puts the button on pause and says but stop remember who your god is get your eyes off your current circumstances and behold your gods look at your god look at what he's done and look at what he will do isaiah will say the israelites don't focus on your circumstances but lift your gaze and behold your great god and so what i'm going to do as we make our way through this song i'm just gonna make five observations five ways that isaiah would say to us stop in the world of your turmoil quit scrolling pause and behold the greatness of your god first of all in verse 1 he would say to us behold your god he is faithful in your world of anxiety and turmoil behold your god he is faithful look at verse 1 lord you are my god i will exalt you and praise your name for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things as i mentioned chapter 25 comes as this wonderful song of salvation but it's piggybacking of chapters 13 to 23 which are all about god's judgment of the worlds and if you were to go back you would see that the prophet explains god's judgment and declares god's judgment upon the nations from assyria in the north to cushion egypt in the south from tyre in the west to babylon in the east yahweh brings down the folly of human wisdom you see the world in which we live the reason it is in so much turmoil is it refuses to acknowledge the kingship of god you see the babylonians the assyrians those from cush they were trusting in wealth they were trusting in wisdom they were trusting in their military prowess in their kings and their generals and these people would come and they would go and in fact the nations that are outlined there in chapters 13 to 23 eventually become mere footnotes in human history and it's against that backdrop of these flimsy kings and kingdoms that isaiah says to the people of god behold your god what is he like he is faithful i will exalt and praise your name for imperfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things isaiah looks back and as he looks back he looks back on the fact that god has kept his promises god has been sure to his word god has done that which he said he would do and unlike these other kings and these kingdoms that would fade out as they would rise and fall on the folly of humanity isaiah will say to his people and to us behold your god he is faithful he is trustworthy lift your gaze off your circumstances and trust him these promises that we hold sure are held because we can look back and see god's track record isaiah says it is in perfect faithless you have done wondrous things behold your god he is faithful but secondly behold your god he is wise look at the second half of verse one it says he has done wonderful things things planned long ago isaiah here reminds israel that their current circumstances have not caught god by surprise god will provide salvation and it will be done according to those things planned long ago what's isaiah's point is saying lift up your gaze don't just focus on the here and now thinking this is all that it's going to be remember god has planned these things out god is fully in control and you know like israel i think we have a propensity to do this we see our circumstances around us we get discouraged we look at what's going on in the world the pandemic the problems of the war the world personal difficulties and it's easy it's very easy to become discouraged and to think that this world is just out of control and when we zoom in on our circumstances often we can fail to see the big picture but when we zoom out as isaiah invites us to do here we reflect by delighting god you are faithful you are wise why because you planned these things long ago friends this week in the midst of our anxiety in the midst of our turmoil we need to stop pause and behold our god he is wise he is in control he knows what he is doing but then thirdly we need to pause behold our god because he is just we need to behold our god that he is just as i mentioned judgment and salvation are two of the key themes in isaiah and here he wants to provide encouragement and consolation for the people saying that the wicked will not get away with it god will bring judgment look at verses two and three you have made the city a heap of rubble the fortified town are ruined the foreigners stronghold a city no more it will never be rebuilt therefore strong people will honor you cities of ruthless nations will revere you friends for the israelites the assyrians were knocking on their door 150 or so years later it would be the babylonians doing the same thing and it would be easy for people to think that god has somehow lost control of this world yet isaiah says that will not always be the case it says in verse 4 for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall the image is there's this big storm and it's pushing against a wall but when it hits the wall it stops and that is the imagery that no matter what the wicked bring against the people of god there will come a day when that will be done that will be nullified friends god is not ambivalent to the iniquities of the world he is not ambivalent or disinterested in justice he reminds the israelites and he reminds us that he is fully in control and the wicked will one day be punished for their iniquity and this is to provide encouragement for god's people the assyrians their power would dissipate the wonderful palaces of babylon will end up in ruins why because god will deal justly with those who live in rebellion to him behold your god he is faithful he is wise he is also just now many years ago uh nearly 21 years ago i went out and bought a wedding ring or at that point an engagement ring rather for my then girlfriend tamara and my now wife and i remember going in there as a novice not knowing how to buy a diamond ring and i remember the the gentleman there was uh quite spiffy and he's quite enthusiastic and he told me the different categories of ring you need to look for four things clarity color cost and there was another season i can't even remember but here's the thing when you buy a wedding ring or an engagement ring what they do with the diamonds they bring it out and they'll bring out a big plate or and on their plate it'll be a large cloth of velvet black or dark blue velvet and on top of that darkness they will then bring out the beauty of the diamonds and you can see the great diamond and the beauty of the diamond set against the backdrop of the dark velvet and in some ways this is what isaiah's prophecy does he gives us the dark storm of god's judgments but then in the midst of that he will show us his gracious character and he would say behold not only is your god just and he will bring those storms of judgment against the wicked but then marvelously he shows that he is a god of salvation behold your god is gracious verse 4 you have been a refuge for the poor a refuge for the needy in their distress a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat in israel's day if you were to go out in that climate it was two things that you would fear the midday heat that could be severe but also the great thunderstorms these elements were out there and if you were out traveling you would feel very vulnerable and here's what god's grace to us is he says though you are vulnerable though you are weak yahweh says i will provide shade from the heat i will provide to you shelter from the storm why because god is gracious god cares for many of us these last few months have felt very lonely and it's easy to feel that god is distant but he's not he cares for many these last few months have left you feeling vulnerable financially emotionally i want to tell you today behold your god he's gracious he cares for some of us we might be wrestling with long-term mental health and there are days when it is hard to get out of bed or there are days when it is just hard to go on i want to tell you today stop pause look up and behold your god he's gracious he cares for you friends the scripture reminds us not only of a god who is just but a god who provides wonderful salvation the diamonds the joy that we can have relationship with him behold your god he is gracious but then fifthly we are to in verses six to eight behold our god he brings salvation isaiah says to his people here stop pause behold your god lift your gaze and see he brings salvation in verse 1 isaiah looks back and he says remember the wonderful things god has done in the past but here in verses 6 to 8 there's a forward-lookingness of isaiah's prophecy he will say look at what god will do the past gives us assurance of god's character but then he paints this wonderful picture of what the kingdom of god will be like and surely this would have been great encouragement to the israelites but what is the nature of this vision that isaiah has of the kingdom where god rules and reigns well first of all it is bountiful look at verse 6 on this mountain the lord almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples a banquet of aged wine the best of meats and the finest of wine this is a wonderful picture of a great banquet a great victory feast for god's people and the picture is of extravagance and here isaiah lifts our vision to our mighty god who will provide on that final day a place where there will be bounty for all this place is also a place of life not death look at verse 27 or rather verse 7. on this mountain he will destroy the shroud that involves all people the sheep that covers all nations he will swallow up death forever our great foe the great foe of israel you can't go to a banquet if you've got a shroud over you you need that removed and here is the good news that this life is not all that is available to us he says there is this day in the kingdom of god when he will remove that shroud he will take away that veil and we will delight and live with him forever he will swallow up death this place is a place of life not death we look up and behold our god who provides salvation and the salvation we discover is for all people four times in these verses we have the repetition of all all and of course we know that anyone who calls on the name of the lord shall be saved and here we have this wonderful image where god the god who is gracious the god who brings salvation brings salvation to all who will trust in him rather than the assyrias or the babylons of this world this place is also a place that is made new look at verse 8. the sovereign lord will wipe away tears from all faces he will remove his people's disgrace from all the earth the apostle paul will pick up on this language in the new testament as will john as they paint this great picture when jesus returns all things are made new pain is done away with and for those here in israel those facing death as the assyrians came knocking isaiah paints a great picture he says lift your gaze behold your god who will bring salvation on that last day friends what's isaiah's message pause stop in a world of turmoil and anxiety behold your god he says to israel he's faithful he's wise he's just he's gracious and he will bring salvation but as isaiah prophesied this the people of god in that day were to take comfort but the reality is that israel were having assyria knocking on their door as i mentioned babylon would not be at their door too much later in the world and their experience that they had was filled with discouragement it was filled with anxiety and though isaiah speaks words of hope here to israel behind these words 700 years later was an even richer understanding of our hope you see 700 years later god himself would enter the turmoil of our worlds for to us a child is born to us a son is given and the government will be on his shoulders and he will be called wonderful counsellor mighty god the everlasting father the prince of peace of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end he will reign on david's throne and over his kingdom establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time and forever for to us a child is born he should be called emmanuel god with us isaiah will say he will be a light to the gentiles and in our broken world of turmoil god comes and dwells among us you see jesus will come and he will enter our world of turmoil he will bring together these themes of judgment and salvation that you find in isaiah as jesus himself undergoes the judgment and the penalty for our iniquity the penalty for our rebellion against god and through dying he will provide salvation so that we might enter god's banquet that we might have a seat at his table in a great moment of irony pontius pilate in the gospel of john calls jesus before the people and he calls jesus there and he puts jesus before his people and he says to the people behold your king ironically he means that in a mocking way but he's exactly right behold your king look at king jesus because when you look at king jesus you will find the one who is faithful to accomplish the plans of god behold king jesus he is wise as he fulfills god's plan that was fashioned before the foundations of the world behold king jesus the one who will be the just sacrifice for our sins behold king jesus the one who welcomes all to the table through his grace behold king jesus he will come again and make all things new brother sisters in our current circumstances in our world of turmoil in our anxiety it is easy for us to become overwhelmed covert economic concerns loneliness mental health often leave us feeling weak vulnerable and helpless but isaiah reminds israel and all also us today that when we have these moments of anxiety when we live in this broken world of turmoil the answer does not lie within ourselves the answer is not trying harder the answer is not doing better isaiah would say the answer to us our dilemma is not within we need to look upwards we need to behold our god friends in a few moments we are going to have our own feast this morning as we are going to do what isaiah was exhorting his people to do you see we are going to look back we are going to look back as we take the bread and the cup and we are going to remember the marvelous works god has done in perfect faithfulness by providing jesus we're going to reflect on jesus the wisdom of god we're going to reflect on the one who bore god's judgments and the one who now has saved us and welcomed us to a table because of his grace and as we sit at the table we are going to have bread and wine and as we take these elements together we are going to remind our souls that jesus has overcome our greatest enemy he has defeated sin and he has removed the shroud of death friends as we celebrate these elements in our world of turmoil i exhort you to behold the one who is faithful the one who is wise the one who is just the one who is gracious and the one who saves where do we find certainty and peace during these anxious times behold your king behold king jesus amen my noises [Applause] [Music] um [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] uh lord's supper please have bread and wine which we will eat and drink brothers and sisters in christ we who come to receive the holy communion of the body and blood of our savior christ can come only because of his great love for us for although we are completely undeserving of his love yet in order to raise us from the darkness of death to everlasting life as god's sons and daughters our savior christ humbled himself to share our life and to die for us on the cross in remembrance of his death and as a pledge of his love jesus instituted this holy sacrament which we are now to share but those who would eat the bread and drink the cup of the lord must examine themselves and amend their lives they must come with a repentant heart and steadfast faith above all they must give thanks to god for his love towards us in christ jesus you then who truly repent of your sins and are reconciled with others intending to lead a new life of joyful obedience to god draw near with faith and take this holy sacrament to strengthen and sustain you but first let us make a humble confession of our sins to almighty god almighty god father of our lord jesus christ you made all things and you call everyone to account with shame we confess the sins we have committed against you in thought word and deed we rightly deserve your condemnation we turn from our sins and are truly sorry for them they are a burden we cannot bear have mercy on us most merciful father for the sake of your son our lord jesus christ forgive us all that is past enable us to serve and please you in newness of life to full of your glory glory to you lord most high let us pray we do not presume to come to your table merciful lord trusting in our own righteousness but in your many and great mercies we are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table but you are the same lord whose nature is always to have mercy grant us therefore gracious lord so to eat the flesh of your dear son jesus christ and to drink his blood that we may ever more dwell in him and he in us amen we thank you our father that in your love and mercy you gave your only son jesus christ to die on the cross for our salvation by this offering of himself once and for all time jesus made a full perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world and commanded us to continue a remembrance of his precious death until he is coming again hear us merciful father and grant that we who receive these gifts of your creation this bread and this wine according to our savior's command in remembrance of his suffering and death may be partakers of his body and blood on the night that jesus was betrayed he took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it then gave it to his disciples saying take eat this is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of me in the same way after the meal jesus took the cup and when he had given thanks he gave it to them saying drink from this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me friends the body of our lord jesus
