Now with Mike Bickle | Episode 23 | My Open Vision Related to Jesus’ Greatest Teaching (John 13-17)

i want to welcome you to another episode with now with mike bickle my open vision related to jesus's greatest teaching that's my title and i shared this at another time but a little different way that i'm going to share today and jesus's greatest teaching i believe is john 13 to 17. it's five chapters it's typically called the upper room discourse because it was a teaching in the upper room the last supper some people call it his farewell message or his upper room message whichever one you want to call it and right now what i want to do is i want to share a little bit of what i saw on that open vision i've only had two open visions and 50 years of walking with the lord and i want to connect it to the upper room discourse john 13 and 17 and as i've been saying at various places i've been talking on zoom calls and around it's like alert alert alert body of christ these five chapters i believe in the next 10 20 30 years i mean i don't know you know how much time we have before the lord returns maybe longer maybe shorter i believe the holy spirit is going to take these five chapters and put them into the mainstream conversation of the of the praying church across the earth the overcoming church across the earth well in this short session i just want to give just a snapshot like a little bit of a road map and i have a teaching notes here it's just uh two two pages and you get it right there on my website i'm gonna begin where we have been in the conversation for some time here in the ihop community right here in kansas city revelation chapter 3. when jesus visited john the apostle and he gave a word of correction it was a pretty shocking word it was an alarming word but it was also a heartfelt word that had tenderness and promise and hope in it as well he gave this prophetic word correction and promise to the church at laodicea and those of you that have been connecting in our our uh family conversation you've heard this week after week after week after week so i'm gonna be ever so brief on this part but in revelation chapter three i have on the notes here i've kind of abbreviated the notes and you get it right there on the website jesus said you're lukewarm this must have surprised them that's verse 16 of revelation 3. then he went on and he mentioned he said you're spiritually wretched he didn't mean their lives were wretched in the physical sense or they were wretched human beings but they were spiritually wretched and poor meaning your eating just crumbs from the table of what i have provided the meal the spiritual food i've provided you're content with such a meager crumbs because i have so much more for you so he tells him in verse 19 i'm giving the abbreviated version here of his message to the laodiceans he said be zealous and repent he goes it's critical that you engage personally from your own heart i'm not going to make you do this and it's going to be more than a one-time kind of realigning of your heart you've got to be zealous you've got to stay with it not that we'll stay with it perfectly but you got to stay in this conversation with me and repent of being content with spiritual dullness and compromise and you know just just spiritual boredom don't be content with that he says here's what i have for you he goes i got i have gold for you spiritual gold he goes i'm knocking on the door of your heart and i have i have again i'm reading right here in the notes here he goes i'm going to invite you to dine with me to i'm going to feed you spiritually feed you now in paragraph b when he says buy from me gold now many of you are familiar with this idea he's he's not saying earn it he's not saying buy it like in some way of legalistically earning it but he's saying engage in the god-ordained process it's invest yourself in a costly way to position yourself before me and i'll give you this spiritual gold or he could use the phrase spiritual food dine with me isaiah yeah i'm still in paragraph b isaiah 55 references this same general idea isaiah doesn't say buy gold but he says buy food in essence buy wine and milk from me by nutrients spiritual nutrients but buy them without money how do you buy gold spiritual gold or how do you buy spiritual wine and milk without using money by isaiah says it chapter 15 55 here he says by engaging in the conversation with me by listening attentively to my word carefully listening staying with it and engaging in the conversation in essence by listening and talking with me that's how you buy gold and the reason i want to make it just that clear because it's not mysterious what we're supposed to do but we need to do this in an intentional way that has a continually doing it i don't mean all day every day but it's not just kind of a passing thing we do you know one weekend but we stay with this he says in paragraph c here on the teaching notes i have he goes i'll dine with you i don't not just that i'll give you spiritual food i mean a goat spiritual goal i'll give you spiritual food now him dining with us is referencing him uh the holy spirit tenderizing our heart and satisfying our heart with spiritual food now this is the context that our spiritual family has been in we've been looking at this conversation in revelation 3 this correction and yet tender promise this hopeful promise of getting spiritual gold and spiritual food and dining with jesus i was praying and saying lord help us and by the way this word to the laodiceans i believe it's for us here in kansas city i believe it's for the ministries across the earth i believe the holy spirit is speaking this word to the body of christ across the nations he says i have so much more for you but you're so easily content with crumbs from my table and for just the introductory things of my kingdom and so i'm praying and in my office and i mean it's it shocks me i'm just you know just got my eyes open i'm looking there's a wall right in front of me and there was an open vision and again i've only had two of these in 50 years and what i mean by an open vision it's like a movie screen appeared right in front of me and i just kind of looked at it it was all startling i didn't know what was happening it takes a minute to you know kind of recalibrate like what what this looks like a vision you know because i don't i don't have them enough to be familiar with it and so and a door opens towards me and this door opens this large door and i could see inside was golden brilliant light i mean in the moment i was thinking the light was going to come out touch me but it didn't it was i was just looking into this vast room of golden light and and as i'm and as i'm looking at it the lord makes it clear to my heart i mean clear to me if you will open the door of your heart revelation 3 20 two verses later i'll open the door of my glory because you read revelation 3 20. read two verses after that chapter 4 verse 1. john says i looked and a wide door in heaven opened they saw the glory of god's throne the glory of god so jesus was saying you open the door of your heart not just mike bickle not just ihop community body of christ in the earth right now you open the door your heart stay with it be zealous i've got the blessing beyond measure you can imagine i'll open the door of my glory in a greater way to you well in paragraph f here in my teaching notes i believe that the door of his glory the door to his glory use that phrase or i'll give you spiritual gold jesus from revelation 3 18. or jesus i'll feed you at my table if i had to find one passage of scripture which you get the whole bible you don't have to limit it to one where this is captured in the most concentrated way i mean the deepest truth concentrate it would be those five chapters in john 13 to 17. this is the deepest teaching the greatest teaching of the greatest teacher in history and these five chapters i'm not saying this negatively i think that if i guess i don't really know if i'm guessing over 2000 years of church history i'm guessing less than one percent of the body of christ has engaged in those five chapters the truths and the promises of them in a consistent way like for years and years i'm guessing less than one percent of the body of christ says why am i saying that it's not possible in my thinking that jesus would give his deepest teaching as the greatest teacher that only one percent or less of the body of christ would engage in it in a deep way i think there's a bigger purpose there's a bigger application i believe the end time church these five chapters is going to be right in the middle of the conversation of the global body of christ they're going to be talking to god about these truths and these promises and they're going to be talking to one another about them and i believe we got the surprise of our life that the lord is going to usher i'm talking about hundreds of millions of believers into a new place of interaction with him from revelation 3 8 i would call it spiritual gold from revelation 3 20 i would call it spiritual food dining with him two verses later i would call the door to his glory his heart can you imagine hundreds of millions of believers interacting with the lord across the earth according to these deepest truths of john 13 to 17. now my purpose in this short episode isn't to break down all the truths because i don't know all the truths in these five chapters but it's my is to point a neon sign alert alert alert this is new a new frontier in the spirit for most of us it's new to me i mean i've read it over the years but i've never gone deep on it in the way that i am determined by the grace of god to go deep it's a new frontier but i think it is a the description of the heart of the overcoming church in the book of revelation let's say it another way the description of the heart of the prepared bride revelation 19. did you know jesus is coming back for an overcoming church that's living before him as a bride that's prepared for him that's equally yoked to him what does that look like well it's spiritual gold or spiritual dining spiritual food the door of his glory use which term you want there's many other phrases i believe it's interacting with god and with one another according to the truths and the promises in these five chapters what a remarkable passage of scripture now i'm thinking when jesus said to john we're going back to revelation 3. you know he's an elderly man many commentators say he was in his 90s they suggest he's in his 90s he's on the isle of patmos he's been walking with the lord 60 years something like that and jesus appears to him and says give this to the laodiceans i'll dine with them i'm picturing john remembering the last supper the last meal the last time jesus dined with them around a physical mill before the cross and resurrection that was in john 13. we all know about the last supper the first communion supper you know where they're there it's passover it's thursday and he dies on friday that's the time he washed their feet john 13 and he faded he fed them a physical meal the passover bill but then he fed them a spiritual mill chapter 14 15 16 17. he gave them truth i don't think they understood most of them i think they were like a little deer in the headlights you know wow i i just don't i can't imagine they were grasping very much but it got into the written word of god canonized in scripture and again throughout church history it's been valid and there's been those that have entered into this that have touched it i mean that are sustained in a consistent way i think again i think it's a real small part of the body of christ even less than one percent but i believe that there's yet a glorious global application of these five chapters and it is going to excite and frill and fascinate and marvel and satisfy the deepest place of our hearts i have here in paragraph f but my real point in this session is really just to alert people neon sign again this is where the spirit is taking us not only these five chapters but he's taking us in this direction if i had to sum up these five chapters jesus is showing us the model of how he as fully god relates to the father who is fully god of course and jesus has fully man how he relates to the father he's showing us how he relates to the father as god how god relates to god and how he relates to the father as a man anointed with the holy spirit and how it becomes the model how god the father how god relates to a man a woman a believer anointed with the holy spirit filled with the spirit of one of his children walking in the fullness of the spirit it's a model of how that relationship works and how it operates and jesus is setting it forth he's saying this chapter isn't these chapters are not mostly about how i relate to god as god although it is there is truth in that for sure he's saying i'm showing you the model of how god relates to his people as they walk in the holy spirit so these five chapters give us a model but also the source of where the church will walk in an overcoming spirit with a as a prepared bride i have it right here in paragraph g that these five chapters john 13 to 17 is a long neglected gold mine it's a gold mine i want to encourage people to go on this holy spirit treasure hunt together i mean millions of us across the earth for years i you know over the years i've been i'm just started my 50th year of preaching on a weekly basis i started back when i was 16 years old speaking 15 years old 16 years old yeah speaking to the junior high ministry and i remember i'd come up with notes and i'd give little statements and sometimes i'd give them the little set of notes i i hope none of them have any of them they were pretty bad handwritten anyway i started 50 years ago and over 50 years of i'm on my 50th year of teaching now on on a weekly basis type thing and there's probably five or six times in 50 years or passages where the lord told me to go deep on that for an extended period of time i remember i gave about 10 years to searching out the life of david not only the life of david but i i just didn't get off of it even though i studied many other passages that was one i was consistent i gave about 10 years to the book of romans studied many other things in the bible but really locked into the book of romans i gave about 10 years did not exactly study the song of solomon the bride of christ the beauty of god and i mean i'm still on those themes but 10 really focused years and sermon on the mount many years and the lord has really highlighted to me and i'm saying this to kind of stir you up because maybe even hearing these words some of you are going to say and even so this will be true of me i just feel this tugging of the lord i want you to give a 10 year focus i mean more than 10 years i mean all your days i'm 65 so i don't know how many days i have but all of my days and never ever move past this subject i mean yes take on other subjects could you imagine reading the 150 chapters that that of which the primary subject is the end time through the lens of these five chapters saying jesus bridegroom king and judge through the lens of this trinitarian conversation the father son and holy spirit the trinity enjoying conversation and then bringing the body of christ into the conversation with them and then interpreting the scriptures through the lens of that conversation that trinitarian conversation well i have paragraph h now that's a strange phrase trinitarian conversation what what does that mean the way the father the son and the spirit they talk to each other and they have from eternity past and they have great delight and great pleasure in their communication with one another and but these five chapters the message is body of christ the jesus by the spirit we're going to bring you into this conversation with us i have it here in paragraph eye that the transformation of the end time church by engaging in this trinitarian conversation i believe it's going to result in the greatest social miracle of history that is the john 17 unity of the people of god in the generation the lord returns a global end time unity john 17 like the father and the son are unified the body of christ will be unified with them and with one another that is a staggering social miracle beyond anything i think our minds could grasp that's not going to come in a vacuum that's going to come as hundreds of millions of people are talking to the same man jesus in the same conversation and he's transforming us now the words will be different but could you imagine we're talking we have that gaze we're in that conversation hundreds of millions of us without man for a sustained period of time i don't mean every minute every day but that's the predominant conversation i believe of the end time church is going to be around these truths and these promises well look at top of page 2. in john 13 to 17 i think of it as this the premier place i have written here on my notes to walk in what david described in psalm 36 i love psalm 36 verse 8 i've loved this verse for years david prayed this and you could read it right here on the notes or read it on your own he said lord this is king david this is his revelation of god he goes you allow them to drink from the river of your pleasure what drinking from the river of god's pleasure what is the river of god's pleasure it's when god reveals god to the human heart when god the holy spirit draws the human heart into revelation of the father and the son and when god holy spirit empowers us in that conversation beloved that's drinking from the river of pleasure and david said in verse psalm 36 verse 8 here he says you will be abundantly satisfied you will be so satisfied in that conversation and engaging in the revelation of the father the son i mean god revealing god and god inspiring us to enter in that conversation with him i believe the end time martyrs they will stand fearless before the lord in the face of death fearless because their hearts will be satisfied they will be in a different space in their interaction with god and they would think do you think we're going to deny him and this reality to live in the temple pleasures of this fallen dark world no way they will they will be they will prevail in love they will be fearless in love even in the face of death one paragraph b another thing that's emphasized in these five chapters is this phrase and we're going to develop this and many other teachers are as well i'm by no means have the corner in the market on this and never will i believe the lord's getting thousands of teachers focusing on this even now in these days and in the days to come i mean many already are but i think many many more are going to start but there's this and through history there's some really rich teaching but we need much much more there's this uh these these phrases jesus said the father is in me and i'm in the father and to think okay the father's in me and i'm in the father and in the same way we're going to be in you you're going to be in us that's really cool but what does that mean the father is in the sun while the sun is in a physical body down on the earth in what way is the father of the sun well i don't know that much i don't want to pretend like i got all this i'm at the beginning of the beginning of wanting to really go deep in this but again i'm thinking i'm going to give myself for years in this focus i trust that i don't ever want to graduate from this again i'll talk teach and study other themes and bring these 150 chapters of the end times that we've talked about over the years and bring there are 150 chapters the primary subject is the end times the generation the lord returns staggering amount of information where jesus is revealed as bridegroom king and judge but taking that biblical information and this the glorious mane and plain truths of the gospel of the kingdom through the lens of this interaction of the father and the son and the way the son is in the father and we are in them and they are in us like my goodness they're they have one they're unified in their emotions they feel deeply about the same things they're unified in their mindset they think not just feel think deeply and in unity about the same things they're unified in their speech jesus said i say what the father says the jesus the spirit says and jesus said the holy spirit will say what i tell him to say they will be unified in their speech one god in three persons distinct persons but so filled with the same emotions the same thoughts and such agreement in their speech and in their actions jesus could say i raise lazarus from the dead or he can say i raise my the father will raise me from the dead but he can say that i raise by my own power i'll be raised from the dead or the spirit raised me from the dead all of those are biblical father son and holy spirit all were involved in all the works of jesus and the raising of the dead the miracles the sermons they were all involved they had their stink distinct roles but i mean that's fantastic and glorious beyond what we'll fully grasp but we can grasp a lot more of this than we do now but i think forever we'll be learning this but i think the shocking thing is in chapter 14 verse 20 jesus said you think it's something that i a man anointed with the spirit live that way with my father that we have our emotions our thoughts our words our deeds are so deeply unified at the deepest level that we can say we dwell in one another and and even more than that he says we're going to do that with you john 14 20. i look at john 14 20 with us really in this age i don't know how far we'll go in this age but we're going to go a lot further than we've gone up to now this is the goal this is the spiritual feasting at the table that jesus said i'm dying with you my goodness i can't even imagine this we're coming to a time where the truths about the trinity are going to be more than theological debates for people who you know are in academia much discussion through history of the trinity has been mostly not only there's exceptions of course but mostly it's been relegated to theological debates and doctrines about how the trinity interacts but i think it's going to become far more practical i think it's become of the lifestyle and the practical conversation of the body of christ look at paragraph d consider this i'm just it's a little take away of how the father is in the sun and the son is in the father and then they are in us and we are in them it's like okay again we get lost in it a little bit because we don't have that much experience but the more we experience it the more clear even that the truth will become although i think for billions of years we'll still be learning the depths of the mystery of the ocean of god's being i don't think we'll ever exhaust it but think about this i have this in paragraph paragraph d how each person in the godhead god had meaning father son holy spirit the three persons one person asked me what do you mean the godhead and they thought the head of god i i meant the trinity father son holy spirit they went oh okay i assume most of you understand that term [Music] but each one of these three persons fully enjoys and fully engages with the other one in relationship fully enjoys and fully engages for instance jesus has joy and enthusiasm and his relationship with the father is he's not just dutifully serving him like father i will serve you because it's right to serve you it is righteous for him to serve his father oh i love serving you he's moved in loving the father and he's moved in being loved by the father jesus has moved that the spirit loves him the spirits move that jesus loves the spirit it's never mechanical they're never disinterested they're never bored they're never distant in their working together their communication their unity is vibrant it's fully fully alive this is a not i mean there's so much more again i'm i say lord i gotta you gotta escort me in deeper all of us this is where we're going and already if that's true between the jesus and the father he's saying i'm going to bring the end time well the body of christ through history has been available this has been available but again i think such a small percent has entered into this or even paid attention to it i think hundreds of millions of believers are going to start entering in to this in the days to come that he would delight in our words and we would delight in his words and we would be enthusiastic about we feel about what he feels about and he has feelings about what we have feelings about we're unified i mean we're in one another and yes the the essence of god's being he is light i mean this is bigger than my grasp god is light god is spirit god is fire okay god is light okay god is spirit god is fire so in that so there the father is in the sun even in the ways like that as well you know what's that mean well if you find out tell me that's bigger than me so they they're they're very presence dwell in each other but also the fullness of their thoughts and their emotions and the things they say they're in deep agreement they dwell on each other in that sense as well but also their actual presence is in one another wow word i want to learn this well let's look at the middle page two just those last couple moments here i'm giving a just a little snapshot if you're a page two because you're saying okay i don't really know much about these chapters which is a common a normal thing so don't feel bad about that i've been studying it hard in this last uh year and don't know and i have said it over the years but not in the degree i have in the last nine months even 12 months whatever months i don't know but i still don't understand most of it it's it's steps beyond me but the lord's saying hey i'll escort you into this if you want to go on this journey with me but i want to go on the journey with you i want us all to go on the journey and i don't just mean our little tribe here our little family and our little friendship connections around the world we've got a lot of friends around the world i've talked about many different streams we go in this conversation together well in john 14 jesus said i want you to know that as a man anointed with a spirit my relationship with the lord was such i revealed the father by what i said and did and they were going okay wow okay he said i've told you that before but they haven't really connected with it but he's saying i'm gonna tell you more than that it's not just that i revealed the father to you by what i did and said and how i acted and what i talked about i actually revealed how the father wants to relate to people who walk in the holy spirit and they're going oh we thought this was just for you he goes no the news i'm giving you now that in my death and resurrection and i give you the holy spirit he dwells in you the goal is he's going to bring you he's john 14. this is how the father wants to relate to you i tell you this is exciting well i have a few more breakdowns here of these chapters john chapter 15. i mean a little bit more on the notes there you can look at your own he's saying now in john 15. well in john 14 i told you how i revealed the father and i revealed that the father wants to relate to you that way john 15. here's some of the dynamics that will be involved here's how union with me is going here some principles to walk it out that's john 15. and then he highlights how we're going to do this in the face of hostility and there's many more glorious points and then in john 17 the great crescendo the last seven verses of john 17. the body of christ across the earth is going to walk listen to this i mean we we all know john 17 that we'll be unified as the father and the son and the world will know we we know the verses but i don't mind that we've used the verses for a bunch of ministries in a city working together you know when billy graham would come to town a bunch of ministries would get together and they would have teamwork and the passage that would be used you know if we work together we'll be one in the world will know we are one like and we would think it's our cooperation in a city-wide outreach and hey there's some truth to that that's that's small that's big but that's there's so much more because he didn't say you're going to have some humble cooperation he said you're going to walk in the unity that me and the father have like what excuse me and not only you're going to walk in it with us you're going to walk out with one another and with us and the earth is going to be shocked by this and the world i mean it's going to come to a crescendo related to the coming of the lord and then throughout the millennial kingdom the glory of this will just fill the entire earth the dynamics that come out of this well john 17 that's how it ends but i'm just going to leave you with this for now but i'm just every friday night a lot of you that watch this now with mike bickle program you're tracking with our friday night meetings we called our encounter god services and we have it live on the web stream i'm purpose saying i i don't really know what everything i'm going to do in the future but i'm purposing to stay on friday nights 7 30 in kansas city time on this subject with some of others in our body and others that visiting others in the body of christ from other places i want to unpack this for a year or two or three or four i don't know maybe a long time i just want to keep here i don't mean just verse by verse i mean i'll take a passage maybe not do it in order just whatever the lord highlights and we just dig and we go on this we dig deep together we just go on this conversation this treasure hunt together week after week after week after week and the reason i'm saying that to you is that you don't need to engage live all most of it hopefully all of it will be archived with the notes and we'll have other ministries involved and resources but i want to be a a storehouse of gather resources on these subjects from others as well and just say hey come and drink deep of the river of his pleasure come on this treasure hunt this go find gold let's feast i mean this is fine dining at the best the spiritual fine dining when god reveals god to the human heart when god the holy spirit reveals the father and the son and then when god inspires us to talk to god when god the holy spirit inspires us and helps us to enter into that trinitarian conversation well that's enough for the for for this episode i just want you stirred up i want you to say i don't really get that much what you just said but i'm alerted and that hey that's good enough we'll start there be alerted and lean in and again you don't have to track with us live the whole time but a lot of will be archived and we'll have notes and then even transcriptions with the notes you know a week or two later so you can if you miss it and you'd rather read it i like reading stuff even more than listening to it live i mean others like it whatever everyone's different but if you have good stuff get it to me i want anything good on this i mean i am hungry to learn this from anywhere in the body of christ that will give insights on these five chapters so father we thank you in the name of jesus and i ask you to stir hearts i ask you to stir our holy imagination awaken our holy imagination oh jesus we want to love you we want to feel the love of god we want to enter into this conversation we want to love one another like you love them we want us all to do this together as your family and we thank you that the church and the generation you return it will be an overcoming church it will be a prepared bride and we will love you jesus like the father loves you as you said in john 17 26 in your name we pray amen and amen bless you you
