Norm Macdonald is like 9 different levels of meta beyond anyone else in the world

That last bit killed me, Conan's face leading up to the punchline was friggin' hilarious.
I forgot who said "Norm Macdonald is the smartest man in the room pretending to be the dumbest."
On a recent interview Norm talked about Letterman. That his show was special because Letterman was in on the joke, the band was in on the joke, and the audience was in on the joke. The joke was on me (the guest).
I feel that goes a long way to describe Norm's appeal. He's very meta with what his role is as a comedian. The goal is to be funny. Sometimes it's much funnier to not get the laugh. Norm is funny because of his delivery and stage presence.
I remember LOVING his run as the news anchor on SNL. People don't remember, but most of the time, the audience was not on his side, or just plain didn't laugh. Nevertheless, that was some of the funniest shit I ever watched.
I don't know why but the Conan/Norm combo is almost always legendary. For example, Norm talking about a Carrot Top film and perhaps the best-told joke I've ever heard.
Oh god you've sent me down a youtube normhole.
If you haven't heard his podcast Norm MacDonald live, I highly recommend it. It just started up again and it's the funniest podcast I know. Good guests and interviews too.
He's only going to get more funny as he becomes more of an old man.
