I'll show you how I packed this down that's what I'll do I'll finish eating I'll show you how I packed this down because it's pretty interesting and you can do it and you don't you don't have to have a wool blanket and or a oil skin tarp you could use a fleece blanket and a five dollar tarp from Walmart it doesn't matter those blue poly tarps will work too come on buddy come on let me fix that for you come here here you good good boy well we're here we've been walking around the woods for a bit trying to find a good spot to set up I think this is gonna have nature do some of the work for me today I'm going to try camping out of a wool blanket roll this is an old school skill taught to me by Iowa Woodsman Terry Barney he's actually got a YouTube channel or sorry he's got a YouTube video of it up on there if you want to check it out it's called The Horseshoe blanket roll hey bud oh my goodness let me fix that for you come here come here what happened what happened hey there you go that must have been difficult that must have been difficult to walk with silly boy so wolfy and I are gonna camp out tonight no backpack no tent just what's in this roll I just tied this on here with a couple overhand knots and the bulk of it is tied together with half hitches this is a good way to test yourself if you want to practice camping without a backpack or if you don't have a backpack or if your backpack breaks or you can even add this to a backpack on the outside of it so yeah just half pitches come off nice and easy and we should have everything we need in here for a night out camping in the snow it is decently warm but as you can see there's still like two feet of snow on the ground so it's gonna be very wet now this piece of rope will be useful for building our shelter after two thinking here well if you give me give me some space big guy we've got a lot of snow we got a wool blanket rolled up in here we got our oil canvas tarp that's the meat and potatoes of the whole thing then we got a small sleeping pad we've got puffy jacket a tiny sleeping bag if you go inside the sleeping bag uh wool blanket our food Possible's poach saw water bottle pot and ax and a little bag for a pillow of course Wolfie is gonna just make it his own eh hey bud okay so we're gonna make this down tree into our shelter using this little bit of gear that we do have all right now I do have on my person a pair of gloves as well which we will be using all right so very minimal gear here and I imagine we'll spend a pretty comfortable night out here Wolfie's gonna have to Bunk with me because he doesn't have any extra bed bedding no room for it in there you know we're gonna keep all the Twigs that come off of here for firewood and or bedding I probably could have got away without a saw but it didn't take up much room and they do come in handy usually can you believe it I'm working up a sweat out here hey well good boy you're a good boy been somewhere making some progress really really warming up hey good boy watch out what oh I've got a smoked duck breast for dinner oh we gotta clean up the underside of this stuff here you good boy all right it's a whole lot of snow still it's definitely Springtime but you wouldn't know for looking we're going hopefully I can pack all this area down and get these snowshoes off before too long okay looking a little bit better we gotta pack your snow down it'd be nice for it to be somewhat even but I can also uh put Twigs underneath where it needs to be built up later on okay without lay this way my head up here a feet down there and I do need some room for Wolfie too the sun is so warm foreign all right something something's happening I want to look out for some Evergreen branches I see a downed tree there that I can use for uh some bedding Wolfie [Music] still not seen him it's been probably 20 minutes ah there's a nice Cool Breeze coming through you know I haven't done a minimal camp in a while this uh this kind of thing actually excites me it's like challenge yourself a little bit I only got a handful of stuff here I'm completely comfortable and I will be all night but like you know I don't have a backpack full of stuff let me have a backpack which I like oh this will help out even out my bed and give me some more insulation off the ground I do have a suit and pad small one so all is well I'd like to make something for Wolf to sleep on too okay well I've arranged it somewhat in the order I need it thickest towards the bottom because it was dipping there but this silly dog is just not coming and it's been 45 minutes so it's odd that he doesn't come back and even just cough pop in when I'm calling him so I don't know I gotta go look for this guy now husky boy you know husky problems Wolfie don't hear him at all whoa oh you got into a porcupine we had to come home I got most of them out but uh he had a couple in his tongue I couldn't do by myself good to come home get some help well that was not great uh I'm luckily only I don't know 20 minutes half an hour from where I was at uh so I went home and got my neighbor and some will to help me I got 90 of them out of his face in his chest and his paws but he had like I don't know man 10 or so in his tongue and I couldn't get one out by myself at all he started clamping down and he wouldn't even let me get in close he's good now right good now crazy so we're headed back it's 4 30 now we don't have too much time actually that took up I don't know over an hour so anyway I'm headed back now I'm gonna keep everything for the most part everything wrapped in my blanket dropper there watch my sleeping bag roll down there is that that's how you do it all right see how much room we get with this thing [Applause] I want it to be stretched out as far as possible come this way to touchable perfect actually I'll leave a little bit of an awning type thing where I can tie off something I stick in the snow in that tree there probably so I don't need much on the back really what you doing I'm just panting over here don't mind me hi nice to join us nice of you to join us Wolfenstein hey good boy hey Mr multi The Maltese Falcon over here huh look at all that fluff look at that butterflies good boy yeah yeah you're good boy he always puts his butt on me for something scratch that butt it's good you like the snow hey whoa okay I better start building this again bud I don't want to be far above this other ah I don't want to be too higher than push higher than that one break the stake a bit okay yeah we'll put one in the middle in a minute but let's get the front belt was first do one of these pull it up actually probably look at you here if I really wanted to tie this one off and call it good that's plenty of shelter how do you think the guy here you're not too shy huh yeah all right well maybe that's what I'll do I might reinforce that because I have the cordage why not but yeah oh she's gonna go firewood processing one oh boy can't believe how warm it is I'll let my uh I've got a pillow in here too I forgot let me sleeping bag Loft up a little bit but I'm not going to open it completely because I got a wolf running around like a madman I might even hey speak of the devil oh hi big boy hey what we've been up to oh he's a good boy he's a good boy you okay oh you got another one come here where'd you find that come here come here come here dude you just keep going back for more eh man what are you thinking we'll see not a rid of his tongue for more I guess well we'll try and go get that uh oh geese are coming back I'm just calling Beast here what looks like you got maybe you have something in your mouth there buddy I'm gonna be okay we found some little deer scratch there too but I wonder if I could just pull this a bit oh kind of sketchy I wish I had my ax with me not back at Campbell okay there she goes yep could have been way worse could have been way worse all right [Music] these big long logs to put down for the base I had to tie wolf up he won't stop leaving and it's no fun trying to chase him all the time so that's a base log there a couple more I try to make them as close to the ground as possible that way it doesn't burn out and start smoking on the sides happens quite a bit and long pliers if you don't get right down all right that's a good base plenty everybody yeah yeah I know lay down I know good boy right now oh you just relax here for a little bit okay it's getting get dark soon I don't want to lose them I'm gonna have to go chase him so he's getting neutered very soon I don't know how I feel about it but hopefully as far as what they tell me oh cut down on him trying to wander so much all right let's let's get this fire lit up I got a lot of wood and a lot more over there easily uh accessible okay a bunch of birch bark here and it's getting a little Breezy I'm gonna throw my my sweater on here soon and my pouch my possibles pouch this is from Fox light gear I've got a monster Fair rod from firestool.com so we'll use this look at the size of this thing you have a little kit with uh a magnesium striker in there too and then the big first deal and a actual Striker that works the boy Wolfie good boy way up there not on the bull blanket if you want to you don't got mushroom bud I want mushroom to go good boy you've got his eyes closed upstairs no I'm glad I don't have to worry about him being chilly or anything like that it's not cold and he's funny you stick much colder than this I gave him the wool blank and he obviously wants to go lay on that snow so we're all good I got uh plenty of room under here obviously I can sit up as high as I can go a little munchkin Joe size I don't feel cramped um it's time to get my things in order under here I've got my food and stuff in this potato bag a jacket can go back here uh I don't know what I'll put in this bag tonight now that I realized I have my pillow but maybe I can do uh in pillow inside of a pillow type conception dealio so it's a little bit more comfortable and it protects it from any kind of would-be Sparks Bubba or otherwise anyways that's that feels nicer than the uh hold the danky other pillow this can get blown up and tucked in between the wool blanket so that it doesn't get any holes as well as a sleeping bag yeah the wool blanket goes all the way down here stops there so we will be relying on a little bit of these battles for warmth I might want to get a couple more under my feet under here but I also do want to leave room for Wolfie to lay on some bows if he wants to again it's like nine or ten degrees at night it's pretty warm that's not too not too much to worry about again just being on the cold but snow is not always ideal for anybody anybody's hips all right well that's that cover this up as much as possible tuck this way down there you're good to go I did on this too for a little bit the fire's still small I've got a little tiny Grill my uh potato bag we got some foil smoked duck breast you guys have seen me have this once before it's from Paisano's in the zoo tea bag oatmeal for the morning salt and pepper potatoes and butter so I'm going to cut up my potatoes and prepare them right now and get my food ready we'll get Wolfy's food ready too hmm let's try it let's try bam okay he's in a lot of faith in this uh Integrity system an old Quigley system here okay well see how she goes what are you doing bro be good well it has occurred to me I think it should be this way upside down a little shrimpy tail on them yeah [Music] I can feel the heat for sure don't eat their quills duck juice duck juice thank you okay well it's been a work in progress but now it's down that low potatoes got to be almost done by now lots of hardwood coals and smoke and it's doing the thing where I said uh yeah we'll fix it after anyways but lots of that's a smoke I know yep you look good oh yeah they're good the duck on here oh boy I'm so excited for this I still have some a little bit of salt and pepper I'm gonna throw on everything here oh this looks good guys okay oh oh boy first played you take the fat off or not oh not oh boy um wow wow that's good that is so freaking good wow well worth the wait I'm super hungry duck brush come here come duck breast what do you think right all about that or what uncle what whoops come on give me some more good boy all right tasty or what [Applause] it's cool you know what I also did and I was trying to tarp up I forgot I left a uh a little Loop here [Music] but I can hang something from this Loop if I wanted to yep would have been better to do that with my shoes on but I have a walkway through shabby firewood close by I can start to pile them there right there anyway yeah it's gonna get dark soon I would assume uh maybe another half hour so staying a lot lighter a lot later it's spring doesn't it look like it you know I wish you would come and hang out with me but it's just how it is I guess with him no big deal again there's a whole wool blanket over here for you but if you want to lay on this if you lay on that if you want to also I have some food for you if you like there you go big boy how about it all right some more firewood [Music] or Chihuahua right there oh that was Birch this is maple I'm gonna do this one because it's thinner things little slippages people I want to take it a little bit easier and go all the way around instead of just trying to hit it on two sides now I can break it anytime got my gainers off now just trying to dry These Boots like I said my feet are dry for the most part they're Gore test but the other side are so and uh starting to get cold I probably will end up sleeping with my boots on just because I only have that three-quarter length sleeping bag I mean sleeping pad but I don't expect I'll be too cold with the sleeping bag and the wool blanket and hopefully we'll wolf will come and lay with me either probably the same side of the blanket um no whatever he wants to do boy okay Mission success came back and tied them up after I had the wood I'm gonna have to cut this one before I throw it over there I got a big boy here Touch This let's just do this for now I'll work it over easily yeah you're good here right you're good here your jackets there you can make it into the bed if you want to you're up high like you like to be I'm gonna go chop up some more wood he stands on guard for me this is the first campout I've done in a long time probably since uh like since the nor tent uh semi-permanent alternate camp I've been missing it I just been dreading the cold and the wet and the loneliness I got the dog but he barely even interacts with me you know anything anyway what was me right canoe season's coming quicker than you think I got some really exciting ideas for the channel this year I'm not gonna give it away right now but I I made a big purchase and uh it's gonna become part of the channel and uh I'm hoping that you guys enjoy it because I think that I'm going to really enjoy it something I wanted to do for a very long time ever since I was a kid uh yeah I'm really excited to see where that where that goes on the channel where that how that gets received and regardless I'm really excited to have that as part of my life screw it I'll tell you I'll tell you what it is ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to ride a motorcycle and I didn't see the practicality these days but I do now with the adventure motorcycles right I'll never read one before in my life don't know how to drive a clutch but I'm taking the course uh there's one at Sioux college that you can take and the written I'm sure I'll pass no problem I bought myself a Honda cb500x and that's like uh quote-unquote beginner adventure bike I guess it sits straight up you write it straight up it's only like 400 pounds I think so for off-road bike it's heavy but for like an on-road because in reality I'm going to ride it like 80 on road even that if those roads are gravel and logging roads is still Road and maybe 20 off-road so I can camp off this thing like crazy I hooked up from um giant Loop this Motorcycle company that makes bags for over landing and like like Adventure camping go to motorcycles and stuff probably using the wrong terminology I'm not hip with it yet but anyways uh buddy a dork in the road um pointing me in that direction and yeah I'm really excited I got the bike used but it's only got like I don't know a thousand kilometers something super super low on it and uh so 2022 so I got a good deal on it I drove all the way to freaking Mississauga I think to get it this is like a seven hour one-way trip but anyway we have it we have to learn how to use it and ride it and I'm really excited to go camping from it and do some like road tripping and meet up with other like uh Moto vlogging YouTubers and stuff around Ontario really excited for it foreign all right well I think that's all she wrote for me today I'm gonna enjoy this tea trying to get my dog over here I he has plenty of room to come and lay with me like I've said a couple times I just don't want people to think I'm casting out into the freaking night he's good he's more than welcome here I want him here it's just he's being a wolfy boy we got a mint tea still pretty hot but like I said I'm gonna call it quits tonight call it a night we'll get up in the morning make some oatmeal reflect on our night uh like I said I am happy that I was able to do this with just that little blanket roll again I learned this for sorry camera cut out I learned this from Iowa Woodsman IA Woodsman Terry Barney he's got a YouTube channel but he has not uploaded in years um on his channel this is called The Horseshoe blanket roll you could actually attach this to like a hidden Woodsman style backpack where it has the flap that comes down over the top you just lay the backpack down make this into a horseshoe shape upside down strap the side put running over the top pull the flap top flap down strap that down put the other side down and strap that down and you've like tripled doubled or tripled you're carrying um capacity on a backpack and if you use a tarp on the other side it's somewhat waterproof like I did so I'm going to lay here hopefully with my dog but who knows I'm gonna have warm comfortable night I'll check back with you guys in the morning well good morning folks it's eight o'clock I've been up for roughly I don't know hour and a half Sophie and I went for a morning hike he's off leash now I'm trying to trust him again so we'll see how that goes fire burned out uh relatively soon after I stopped filming last night the the water soaked it all up from underneath but we're gonna get a good fire going again this morning and cook up our oatmeal and uh yeah hopefully spend some more time with the dog although ever since I took him off that leash he's been oh he walked with me and then we got back he's been wandering so we just got back just got back I grabbed some birch bark on my walk I'll get that Lit Up and uh I'm gonna grab some more Twigs first though I love burst Park in the morning she's a little dirty you know so if you skim off the top all right it's like uh metaphor for life she's a little dirty bud so if you just get past the top layer should be pretty good right in there he's chomping on something over there hopefully it's not quills no quills right bro good boy super simple uh easy tarp set up to put up and take down I just got two fish tanks in the back that I just pushed into the snow as you saw and look at that changes the whole vibe it's all about the Vibes right I don't think I ever even said that word until this year slept the whole night out on the on the snow I put my jacket down in here for him made sure he knew he could reach it tried to put him in there a couple times no go so no concerns on that dog as far as being warm oh we're just gonna do the oatmeal right in the packets it's the easiest way and then that way I won't use up all of my water and I can use actually it probably won't even need to put too much more snow into that cook up for Wolfie the trick with this is to really shake it up before you put the water in because it's hard to stir all the sugary stuff in after [Music] what's that hey bud them geeses some silly goose plenty closing back up as much as possible let them sit agitate the bottom you know cooking tips five-star Michelin cooking sips with Joe we've got dehydrated chicken now this is pretty useful because not only will he eat I'll show you he'll eat this dry come come come on soon come along with come on bud this way he'll eat this dry but we can reconstitute and he can eat it that way it'll smell better but I can also eat it all it is is just chicken just put in the freeze dryer so brass chicken whole anyway so it's a it's a double purpose thing I can make a soup out of this if I wanted no just wait it's hot and feed him and give him treats so super happy with that very useful and I'm sure this coming season I'm gonna do some canoe trips with them and we'll use this method to feed ourselves you just gotta wait a minute though okay because it's super hot still just wait now no that's mine and I'll give you this in a minute good boy you said good oh sorry you don't like this movie here there you go okay look at this bowl then I'm gonna eat breakfast with them I'm sure he doesn't care if there's a little bit of leaf glitter in there it's still pretty hot oh yeah there we go just back up for a minute I'm not done good boy okay let's see see how this goes down for you and put it over here away from the smoke buddy good boy there you go ah sorry yeah that's a good boy I'll show you how I packed this down that's what I'll do I'll finish eating I'll show you how I packed this down because it's pretty interesting and you can do it and you don't you don't have to have a wool blanket and or a oil skin tarp you could use a fleece blanket and a five dollar tarp from Walmart it doesn't matter those blue poly tarps will work too yeah let's do that the first step which is kind of hard out here right in this spot is to get the tarp laid out flat as can be I want to take my blanket I'm gonna fold it right in half lengthwise I want to make sure it's all even so that it doesn't Bunch up too much anywhere where it Rose close to the back as you can flat get every all your gear isn't much this trip together so that's all my stuff I don't want to put anything hard right in the middle here because this is where it's going to be on my shoulder so got my food stuff over here my water bottle and my sleeping bag will go over there too my coat which is nice and soft will go in the Middle with the sleep with the soft pillow thing all right I think that's it then you're just gonna roll it it's like super simple keep it all together and roll it up as tight as you can this might have to be spread out a little bit better [Applause] go keep it tight as possible and keep the stuff I don't know six inches five inches away from the edge or as much as possible it's not rocket science you know just rolling up a blanket roll here [Applause] and really that ax could have gone on my belt to take up less room in here but it's not necessary okay so the ends are just gonna tie whatever you want slip knots overhands it doesn't matter you just gotta keep it bunched up and you're gonna wrap it in my case I'm just going to wrap it a bunch of times and tie it off if you don't know knots highlights and then we're going to do slips or sorry half inches all the way down so just pull it down some hold it wrap it around Slide the end underneath pull it through I want to do it at like 30 clean intervals like six inch intervals or something or else it's gonna get saggy and potentially open up and now it's uh it's pretty durable already and then at the end I'm just going to wrap it around tie it off and we're going to tie the two ends together [Applause] I'll uh horse shoe you know see the name now see where you get the name now we just wrap them tie them off nothing fancy on my end all right we'll pick this thing up and show you how she Rides Again pants do it even this way look at that versatile That's All She Wrote horseshoe blanket roll pack I'll uh Iowa Woodsman thanks for watching folks we'll see you soon on some more Adventures good night good night wolf he says
