hey man it's about yg and k young and the toughest thing about watching your favorite player is seeing the moment that they can't play anymore and it's kind of a weird feeling to watch because during his prime you think he's untouchable but now you start to see him play slower or he's missing a bunch of shots that he usually makes it's honestly a horrible experience to watch like you can't believe that was the same player that was hitting those crazy shots or doing those crazy dunks but like what they always say father time is undefeated you can play like a superhuman on the court but you will know when your time is up that's why you always have to appreciate every moment your favorite players on the court because once he's gone you might not feel like watching basketball anymore so anyways man we're gonna listen to nba legends and players share the moment they realize it was time to retire some of these are kind of sad and some are really funny so before we get straight into the video make sure you like share subscribe and hit that notification bell for the culture so you won't be missing any of my videos and let's get to the vet man um and you don't want it to change neither but that burden becomes a heavy burden where you carry the frustrations and the stress of not being as good as you uh or as great as you once were um you know on certain nights and when you have those nights they definitely feel good but they come far far far between yeah um so yeah man you we've like when i i knew it was over for me when these young guys came in and they were running so fast i mean i think we played against sacramento one game and i think um darren fox and buddy they were running they was getting shot up in like three seconds and i was like i can't even like get back in three seconds now let alone you get a shot up in three seconds and i looked at coach i almost said take me out but my ego went i knew it was time i was like no it's time these guys are too fast everybody wants to know why now it's the right time there's no point in really belaboring it or dragging it out or saying well leave the door open in case i don't know something may change i don't think this is something that's a decision that you can allow to have outside influence dictate whether or not you continue to play it must be a decision that comes from the thing so once i knew this was it might as well say it so how did you know this was it i try to have at least 15 minutes of still time i'm just kind of sitting my thoughts in the morning and just kind of meditating normally what happens with me is my mind would always drift to the game always then i found myself sitting there my mind wouldn't drift towards the game all the time anymore and that's when i started realizing you know what it's getting close it's getting close i must say i leave the game in good hands so many great stars still in the game so many great stars rising and playing the game i have passed on the things that dr j some of the great players magic johnson larry bird has passed on to me i pass on to these all-stars here as well as the rest of their players in the nba i thank for you i thank you for your support now i can go home and feel that peace with the game of basketball you know i would like to play a little bit longer maybe a year or two more but uh there's just no way possible i was going to be able to do that so today i'm retiring and i'm still going to be around but uh not in the capacity i once was this is not a sad day it's a very emotional day but it's not really a sad day because i knew this day was going to come sometime and i sort of prepared myself but once you sign the papers and say you're retired or once you get up here in front of these people it's uh it's a little bit different i'm looking at you in terms of you played a long time how did you know when it was time to finally say okay i can walk away i feel complete now well i i think your body starts to talk to you a little bit getting up going to the shoot around ankle a little getting up going to the practice yeah you start to feel all those aches but it's really about winning too i'm sure that mono has been in a situation where he's accustomed to winning and when you lose a series like what happened to them with golden state you get sweet four games you don't have tim duncan back there anymore it's a little bit different so you know as a player you still enjoy playing the game but it's the brutal beating and the traveling things that really takes you away from it i agree i mean i know when i retired you know it was all about my body and the way i felt and i knew i couldn't you know give back to that playing as hard as i tried to play every single night and with that competitive nature and when you get to that point like scotty said your body just knows it you know my workouts in the summer i said i can't do that you know i can't get ready like that anymore and i just knew at that particular time it was time to just move on and start focusing on other things huh okay go ahead it's been 16 years man playing a game i love dreamed about and you know i think i've had a great run and it's come to an end you know i think i'm excited and i'm happy about what's next to come and just walk away so you're retiring it's over it's over what i'm happily happily really i mean i i didn't see i didn't see that when we saw each other at the finals i saw a guy aching the play thought that he still had a lot left that he could have helped his team and i still do right i still have a lot to play to really give but i can't allow myself to settle the last three years have mentally ejected me from the game so if i can't be engaged and feel that i can play the role that i could i feel that i could play and it's it's totally what was it like for y'all to lose that game six skip still hasn't recovered from it what was it like i haven't recovered from it i hate when people bring it up to me every you know everybody was rooting for me to get that championship and guys come up to me all the time you know i wanted you to get that chip but yeah game six i'm still having nightmares about it you know 28 seconds i'm sitting on the bench yeah i'm tasting the champagne yeah i'm happy i'm excited about you know how i'm going to celebrate who i'm going to jump on all of that is running through my mind 28 seconds and just i felt like i had more to give in my role than what was given to me it as a competitor you know you you don't want to feel like you're settling and i felt like the over the last three years that i was settling sitting on the bench and role was really reduced and i felt like i could give a lot more than i was able to and i just couldn't allow myself to go through that again [Applause] chuck daley spent eight years at punxsutawney high school in pennsylvania and almost got into another profession because he couldn't get it in the college job that's it for kareem now that's it he's out [Music] hey first of all i'd like to thank everyone for coming out appreciate you guys very very much never thought this day would come and uh father time is finally caught up with your kill on the hill and i just want to say who's this yes for real you want me to come up and apply for the new york general manager job okay sure i'll be up right after the press conference okay sure thank you that was the president of the knicks he want me to fly up right after the press conference and try for the general manager guys what was the moment that you knew it was over grant oh wow for me um last year last year game five uh memphis haven't played the whole series probably didn't play the ten games going into the playoffs i'm all excited i think i'm going to play i'm going in layup line trying to keep up with the young guys dunking and layup line at the end of the game i didn't play but my knees hurt so when the series is over i get an mri and i have a surface tear of my medial meniscus and so when you hurt yourself in layup line it's time to take your time it might be time yeah to go to the tv everybody take a shot at this one bones when did you know i was telling steve kerr this story and we were playing in portland it was uh i played just one year in houston i had signed for two years to play in houston that's where all the berries get buried my dad finished in houston john finished in houston and i did we should put some like plaques some sort of gravestones across the street in the empty lot but anyway uh we were playing up in portland and this spanish kid name named fernandez first name rudy was a first year player for for the portland trailblazers he checked into the game when i checked into the game coming off the bench and uh i i couldn't find him honestly i couldn't find it he was running around and i was like man i used to do that i used to run like that and i could not catch rudy fernandez and at that time i seriously considered it might be time yes thank you really financially spanish how about olay guy with jamal jamal crawford threw it through my legs i put my foot on the sideline thinking he has nowhere to go he threw it through my legs and laying it up but i looked at bernie bickerstaff was at my coach and he said it's time we looked at each other hi oh well for me in 2001 trying to hang on i go out to la training camp phil jackson says uh 3d come here so you want to play yeah coach i think i got another year i want you going home come on 2001 true story and i've seen phil jackson since then and i always thank him that's why i can still walk now i didn't tear up nothing i had no bad injuries i still can walk normal because he was honest he said no you can't move anymore well what a what a heartwarming tale that is zeke i i never forget it we were we were on a road trip and was maybe two or three weeks before the season was getting ready to end uh we were in orlando and we was coming from detroit and we checked into the hotel and the next morning we had an eleven o'clock shoot around and so i got up early like i always do ate some breakfast and now i'm laying by the pool you know the sun is out and you know i'm i'm timing myself waiting to go to the bus and the pool is sitting there i'm laying there and i think i know how this story is and you know i'm looking at my watch and i'm like i i don't want to go to practice i don't want to go to shoot around and that was the first time in my life said i never wanted to go to the gym i i and it scared me that i didn't want to go to the gym that day and that's when i said i'm done and two weeks later i think i told my achilles because mentally i had already checked that wow that's interesting yeah yeah but i i checked out like two or three weeks before wow but i never forget lan and i remember going home telling my wife i was like you know what baby it's over she used to get up and you know make the pregame meal right your wife make the pregame meal and everything so the next two weeks you know what i had for pregame meal no a peanut butter and hey i remember jelly my last peanut butter jelly sandwich saying damn i know she said i'm retiring too [Music] all right kenny you're up i don't know if i could top that one but it's it's uh you know i've said it before it's like it's two two episodes actually the first is you know you're a young player you get a steal you take that like isaiah said earlier and grant you take a picture to see where everybody is and then you take off and when you take that picture when you're young and you get that steal you see everybody like they like this then when you're getting older and you turn them out take that pitch and you see everything you're like oh they think they can catch me oh it's time to retire right now so that was my my record but the confirmation is when two things you look at guys who can't play and you're there in the game and you can't guard them when you sit back and like an analyst and go he can't play you get in the game and they just keep going around you get back he said he can't play he's like no wait you can't and lastly is when you're having coaches meetings with the coaches when you're a group player the coach is not bringing you in there talking all the time he's like kenny come over um i need you to talk to lindsay hunter hey kenny i need to talk to this guy kenny now you become the talk to guy so then you know that you need to start talking for a living and i call turner and i'm ready to talk for a living all right steve i knew it was over when my last two seasons i had to take vioxx in order to actually be able to play anti-inflammatory anti-inflammatory but i realized quickly what color is that pill i thought you said something else yeah it's no longer on the shelf okay because i think um kidneys or whatever heart issue but i would take it for a week and then i'd get off it for a week and it was literally like night and day how my body would feel and i realized vioxx was actually a ped at the time so i mean it is it should be it was not technically but i'm i'm doing this i'm doing this experiment i'm like i can still play when i'm taking this pill and when i don't i can't move my body can't move that's how i was i was on the viax too great i need some nails mso was the horse drug yeah yeah they gave you our job well no no no no no no no no no no they'd ask how many need to take you to go yeah yeah after all these years they put it on is done to take off the mic and no more research whenever you know what uh whenever it seems more appealing to go to the pool than to come you know what that ain't gonna happen so guys i hope you enjoyed the video and tell me which play you had the toughest time watching retire so make sure you like share subscribe and show love to the yg gang and i'm out [Music] ryan
