NASCAR Classic Full Race: Jeff Gordon vs. Rusty Wallace, Round 1 : 1997 Bristol Motor Speedway

Theresa chores started you back to the pack you know we've talked about all the change that's been made here at the Bristol Motor Speedway there's a slight change on the racetrack look wider four feet wide or I should say coming off of turn two and all the way down the backstretch B now don't know how much of a difference that's going to make but there's a bigger problem than that though you ever a little bit helps but 43 cars today Darrell Waltrip will start 43rd and folks there's a lot of great cars back there Ned my question can they get through the traffic before Rusty Wallace who's blind and fast lapsim well they've been tough this traditionally is a one group racetrack especially in the first half of the race they run right down on the bottom of the racetrack tough to pass on this racetrack but that helps to make it very exciting and all about bumping and grinding that we usually see back here on the backstretch there's not much going on right now because the cars have not rolled off yet but that won't happen for very long there'll be a lot of action back here on the backstretch and you know what there's a lot of drivers that will be paying back here on the backstretch that are very very good drivers we've heard all the statistics about Darrell Waltrip 12 wins right here at Bristol he's starting way in the back 43rd with a past champions provisional another couple of guys to look at look at this car number three back here Dale Earnhardt 8 wins here at Bristol he's on the backstretch and so is Mark Martin Mark Martin a former winner here at the track saw a lot of cars back here look right here here's the STP Pontiac Bobby Hamilton he's a great short track driver so we'll see some guys with a big disadvantage today pitting on the backstretch you talked about the largest field of the modern era NASCAR Winston Cup racing let's take a look at how they're comprised a day 24 and 15 Chevrolet's 8 Pontiacs 10 points separate him in the manufacturers championships Chevrolet back afford by 10 and Pontiac back of Chevrolet by 10 those that missed the field there were 47 cars here 43 all-stars Bobby Hill and Billy standards Mike Wallace and Greg don't think he did anything he sit there hoping that NASCAR would throw the caution all we said left front tire blood just as he stopped the left front tire blew Suey that's why he sent their net he wanted to get in the pits and change those tires under the caution flag and he did flip the left side of the wall with the left front and the left rear as he was coming to a halt there so he has some sheet metal damage on the left front and the left rear as a car was sliding but it could have been a whole lot worse for Ricky Rudd pit stops already guys here they come down pit road they want to make some adjustments on those cars those that are not happening too well 35 miles an hour no faster you'll get a penalty let's go down to John [Music] besides already gone now they're coming around the left side no chassis adjustments for rusty four times and barbers Ted Musgrave Jimmy Spencer Bennett's rusty [Music] collision Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett I believe is it's very very tight down there you want to get out in a hurry Jeff Gordon had to back up to get out of his Pizza Hut Stricklin or the 81 car of Kenny Wallace headed right in front of him they were having some problems and Jeff had to back up to get out of his pits and that cost him some extra time well working caution for the second time today now the cars that have been left you see those cars peel off down pit road the oil port will wave the yellow flag once again spring once again subbing for Ricky Craven they change the right sock art so they can see what happened to spray he goes in the corner and he gets in to highs the car goes under him in turn one he gets into high gets up on the loose step and around it goes and he lost the left sitting there as he's trying to get his car going he lost a lap and then Sprague is really kind of a benefit for Ricky Rudd even though he's behind the wall here four laps already the big problem is they're not able to put any fuel in the race car you see they're working back there on the fuel filler to go back out they might run out of gas so they've got to correct that problem before they go out and reported to the 42 car the BellSouth Chevy of Joe Nemechek may have a right rear tire going down we'll check on that there's the white rear tire and take a look at the attendance over the years as you look at that car 1961 the very first race here the Southeastern Gordon is just basically stop that Jeff Burton did peg to 25 mark just a little bit [Music] Jeff bird was flying to be able to get back there in the race rusty wells back to get his lap back but there's the damage Benny said the heavy damage on the car number 25 of Jack spray we see them pip this time how long they've been out there on those stars well they pin it on lap 49 they're the only time all the leaders have been on pit road we're at lap 132 so the pace car Pacific's every play it's between the 31 and the 25 banging and banging [Music] guess they ever hit anything other than each other I bet a lot of damage to these cars now watch him watches the nine car goes by here goes Rusty Wallace now here goes to any doesn't it clip him as he goes by and you haven't seen Jeff Gordon yet cuz he all but stopped he had not gone by yet [Music] that was the Budweiser rear camera now Andy graves and the crew will try to work on that cars he's come to rest on pit road I guess it he of the 31 car made contact going in the corner just couldn't get off each other pit road has now been opened and here come the cars let's go down to Bill Weber the leader pit stop Rusty Wallace has the number one pit stall all the way at pit out toward turn one this will be four tires fuel and they will as you look at the triple pitch the cars on pit road now watch for these times a lot of guys like Kenny waters for one had trouble getting out of their bed last time the form Krusty 20 seconds per Dale Jarrett like the day alerted on the backstretch [Music] out of these 72 races they've run here only one from back here John Kernan Kyle Petty and Terry Labonte both were in for four-tire change both of them had just a little bit of extra time Kyle's crew did not make any chassis adjustments neither did Teri's but they did make an air pressure adjustment and also the bodies had a left not fall off the left rear tire Ted Musgraves coming back in Labonte had some problems on the left rear tire so that slow to his pit stop down just a little bit now they come in to change the left side tires and actually the purpose of this stuff is to put the rubber in the left rear of Ted Musgraves car we've talked almost since that first caution period how loose Ted has been they've got the rubber ring that will tighten the left rear they're gonna they could not make that jump obviously under greed and it took up two stops to get it done here under caution okay let's see if we could decipher what happened to bring this caution flag out now we see we're riding along with much [Music] that's right he hit the 75 car rig mass when he did that he backed off the gas and when he did that the Sprague the 25 parking block hit him you ready for those of you scoring at home that is close to Remington to Budweiser that was a contact pattern for caution flag number eight back with more for us ball in a moment [Music] [Music] back at bristol motor speedway work in the eighth caution flag today well one guy who put it back on lap 99 found this caution flag go is locking because he is being shown as our leader there he is the McDonald's Ford Robert for Bill Elliott but they didn't stop this time has a bent at about 36 37 laps since he came into the lap 98 99 Elliott pitted twice he got two tires each time they've made some adjustments on the car and under right before this last caution came out Bill told Mike veins and hey this car is really hooked up in fact this morning when I was talking to Bill he says hey I could have probably a day like I had back in 1988 he wanted in the spring race remember he spun around and came back to win and second I believe to Dale Earnhardt in the night race and Bill said the car actually ran better in that night race in 1988 and he thinks that he might have a shot at winning today but as we've seen Rusty Wallace has pinched out they made a track bar adjustment to see what rusty is Bobby I can't imagine he can be any faster than he already was Robyn Pemberton the crew chief on the two car talking to his driver Paige stars off here the cars come bring blankets out Trent is a second-place Charlie Cartoon Network [Music] Robert Crissman had also stopped [Music] he's a letdown stopped on the car the left trying to get in back here in the 95 tries to go by press me on the outside meanwhile Jeff Burton the 99 car trying to get to the front feels like this invention car made an unscheduled pit stop here's Rusty Wallace coming in a hurry see rusty moving in on the 99 interests starting at the rear of the pack and was up there in this is still isn't the big pack but he did make a pit stop on this possible [Music] position red bow tie comes with their clearance dismissive new kids Kyle Petty toy away get down 13:11 spotted a great qualifying effort qualified 11th 12th and 13th on the street [Music] problem barely gotten on the line before the star the race that 10 minutes before in changed all the breaks this morning found an engine man they had to change folk down on the inside trying to spot away the crowds get them to buy the racetrack because the 81 collar Square D car Kenny Wallace has been very very good all weekend long as his best qualifying spot of the year starting fourth year lot on the rear of Kyle Petty's Benson builds around shows up the track and Billy will be back Burton and Strickland we're trying to get their laps back and boy Marcus just came down off the banking said it's the car number 30 of Johnny Benson there's a Dave Marcus Realtree car right in front of the leaders and they were able to had to slow up and did speed back up to keep those cars a lap down and we see some damage to the right rear and the rear has gotten into the fence and he backed in with the left rear so evidently this right rear problem happened somewhere back in the corner and Benson just turns a car left to avoid Marcus but he did a good job of aborting Marcus there two spins him around and fortunately he keeps from getting hit hard at least from any other car and look at Betts now he is behind the wall it looked like a simple spin out but he is behind the wall in the world is going on fins all through not going to work on Johnny Benson's Pontiac look like as you said but he just turned the car and missed them right down left what's the problem with the 30 car well Jerry is they were coming down the backstretch off of turn number two actually Johnny Benson made a bit of contact with Dave Marcus and then Benson backed out of the throttle to let Marcus get it straightened out and he just couldn't okay so that's the damage to the left front is where he made contact with Marcus I guess and here's the car number 71 the Realtree Chevrolet with some significant rear-end damage laps here but I would say it's going to take them quite a while already many laps down this is what critics anymore last talked about that's exactly what you were going to say Benny talk about walking softly here and carry a big hammer exactly what Bill Weber we talked about the top of the show I think what Bristol was all about [Music] [Music] but now going into third [Music] bobby labonte she's changed two tires the last pit stop is by Morgan Shepherd Oh the 99 cars slowed abruptly that was Jeff Burton right in front of Elliot and Presley now here comes Burton on the pit road he just got his lap back and suddenly the car slowed abruptly and it turns one and two we saw the damage of the rear that coming home [Music] our leader Robert Pressley how about that he's had such a tough year this year and it's good to see him out front bobert qualified 15th is our leader was checking with Villa while these guys are disappointed the hood is up and I on the outside but he's got left side damage to the left rear and to the left front the 29 [Music] [Music] pressin ride think Robert Pressley might have made some contact Jeff Burton going down into turn number [Music] Pressley that is a tough break Johnny just tickled all the way into your historic Lord does not met the right today but he has position he might do it the next time by 35 laps pretty simple that was awesome slides by Kelly back in now here's what happened in an incident a moment ago from Rusty Wallace this is the frontstretch down in the corner and all of a sudden and it almost gets sideways [Music] Wow that's what cut the tire down them own robber press his car they contacted me [Music] running the back of the nine announcing the damage for the right under the eight and we saw the damage to the rear of the 99 car and rusty squeezes by on the inside then Jeremy said I'm on that the twenty four we see the bag a car just moved in the third spot Dale Jarrett you set out along Jeff Gordon is racecar good life soon he and Rusty Wallace race we're getting to see their dad he's out in front of Christ and he got bound rescue him back what may have a all from turn to over there cut the tire down look at the balance Timmy you're supposed to have one here it's completely broken off this one here pinched off the air escapes the tire goes flat the inner liner goes flat that's what happens presses one into turn watch it I just no idea i watch the crab they all stood up I really thought he come on [Music] thank God I mean that's the way that stuff happens I don't know next to DuPont interstate pepsi everybody to help us out and say hello recommenda boss i hope that didn't hurt your heart to hurt mine man two teammates up there fighting for the lead and Gordon pulls it off here's the replay of that final left okay they're going to turn three rusty gets down on the inside his car slips a little bit there Gordon comes up underneath him takes the lead and runs away resti still wobbly as he comes off the turn here comes Terry the body almost kissed by start/finish line [Music] they make contact I don't know I really don't know I don't know if rusty might have touched the apron with the left front or there was some contact back that really can't tell they tell me if you touch the apron with the left throwing you it really kicks the back end out something that some of the drivers were concerned about maybe three and a half feet at best the separation between the 2 and the 5 run reaction over in the Gordon pit is Ray ever damn happy or what yeah and there's a big smile on the young man who has won his third sprite Food City 500 let's go to our McDonald's winner's circle and hear from Jeff Gordon bill Jeff Gordon that's amazing congratulations that three wins in a row at this race tell me about the last lap well that certainly was interesting because not only was I trying to get by Terry or rusty rusty I mean he was tough all day I knew he's gonna be the guy to be but I was trying to get by him but Don had to worry about Terry you know that set of tires wasn't as good as the time before is a little bit tight and then I'd get loose but I tell you what I got to thank these guys on this DuPont Chevrolet they did an awesome job today in the pits and gave me a great race car and yeah it was pretty tight down there I mean that's what Bristol is all about you get down they're closing laughs at Bristol and it's any man for himself I've seen it done many times were you concerned on that last set of tires that your car was not going to come around to you it really didn't it never really came as good as it was earlier but it was still good enough to catch rust and that's all I needed well congratulations that's a great win for you and Ray it said late in the race that his money was on you way better put his money on me but that doesn't mean it's gonna be guaranteed every time but I put my money on him and I'll tell you what these guys have been great really proud of this one today that's Jeff Gordon in victory lane to John Curtin with Rusty Wallace Rusty Wallace is over by the gas pumps now to your second place finish and rusty that what a wild finish what happened there how did he get around you just a lap car down at turn one and two with the last lap checkered flags waving our white flags waving in you know 23 Carver's on the bottom of the track there and we all had to go around outside of and when that happened it allowed let him get up my rear in and get close to me then I got down to turn three and got one of those old love taps and I got up the racetrack a little bit and got second and that's about it well it was still a good run for Rusty Wallace finishing second place today let's go upstairs Jerry well we talked about how close it is a Bristol of the action is like Ned and Benny but that was one whale of a finish you know Bruce is gonna have a hunting 30,000 seats here in August and ain't enough Bruton I'm telling you they've enough well that's 118 thousand at a Georgia today they're gonna go home and tell their friends we come back in August 130,000 that's not what Jeff bird wants to hear more seats more work but great action here at Thunder Valley we'll come back to talk to some more people after this don't go away [Music]
