write an unusual pass that you can see somebody pass on the outside here at Darlington Ward Burton had to guys have got a give and take here on this racetrack and more with Mark Martin in fifth position at Salonika chef right in front of him Joe Nemechek where's our point leader well there he is Dale Earnhardt on the [Music] Mayson contacts that came off the corner and that was right in front of Dale Earnhardt something he doesn't want to see if cars get in trouble in front of e on this racetrack there's a word 30:16 circle is another paint job on that 32 parties you will see if Mark Martin can make it stick on the inside this time in turn that's over fourth position [Music] the car seems to be dropping back problem he says he does not have a problem check with Larry McReynolds caution flag being shown in the field for the first time today let's see what happened here this moment ago Gordon turn three this is really a gutsy move by Jeff Gordon he gets alongside of Brett bowtie and it really takes a line away man yes he does Brett's tries to stay out there but Jeff makes the pass gets out in front his car gets a little loose coming off the turn then gets capped by the 26 car he comes back into the 26 car print butyne hits him and spins him around and Brett was very lucky not to get he hit the wall that's unlucky but he was lucky enough to get hit by another car different angle this time looking at it from a different camera looks like Brant was trying to get back on the inside of Jeff Gordon and made just slight contact and when Gordon comes off the wall he has milk control touches that 26 in the right rear and away he goes what happened there you can see Jeff Gordon is in front of us coming off the term low tide then as he comes off the wall as famous as that comes down hit the red bowtie expands him the wrong way up into the wall Brett mr. wall hard with the front end of the Quaker State Ford makes the 360 and everybody else is able to get by and let's go to John Kernan and Dale Earnhardt spins well the champion who's on pit road he's going to make some adjustments they're going to take tape off the front grill a round of wedge added to the left rear and also they're going to take a rubber out Earnhardt's card not handling the way he would like it to it you can see he's had some contact out there on the racetrack with with somebody as you can see a tire mark on the left side now let's go up to [Music] push in on the left front you can see the crew they're working to pull it off they have chains the left side tires Jeff almost all somebody's back underway [Music] trouble in the early laps here at Darlington we told you this racetrack is going to be tough to handle in a couple of drivers have already learned a lesson Jeff really hard to tell let's watch and see if the 24 does get loose he's very low looks like he might have got just a little bit loose and had to squeeze out of the throttle Brett Bodine makes contact with it Jeff goes up smacks the wall when he comes off the wall he hits the 26 and man you're riding that handle world he was able to spin in front of all these cars and I get it's amazing very fortunate let's take a look and see how Morgan Shepherd saw from within the Citgo for [Music] Terry wasn't able to see a whole lot there but he's it's all enough to be able to drive through let's check in with John Kernan who's caught up with Brett Bodine John cherries you can see a lot of front-end damage to Brett Bodine Quaker State Ford the radiator the oil cooler the team working very hard trying to get it fixed to get Brett back out Brett it's a little hard to see exactly what happened on the tape on the replays what did happen I just touched him a little bit out of shape he ricocheted I guess off the wall got the side of it I feel bad that I messed his car up I hope he's all right you know coming to me it was just all my fault I wasn't that I was in a hurry I just made a mistake Darlington I feel bad for my team a Quaker say we had a good car and good chance driver just made a mistake in the Costas well they're working on the car right now to try and get him back up let's go later still running that High Line even with the fresh tires and seems to be making it work very very well for yes when traffic when they start running bad traffic it would be very important and Dale Earnhardt has blown by the Rick mast car to take the fifth spot away he's shot by master ago and has moved to the rear deck of Rusty Wallace cheerio is haunted channel Earnhardt makes a major way when they had a great run coming off the turn and cleared him it easily going into the turn as Mark Martin makes the pass on ken schrader coming out of turn four go ahead and mix it up back there I'm just gonna pull away a little bit well it was working at Hydra [Music] there's Earnhardt making a pass now on the inside of ten straighter than yeah of course he just ended [Music] so he'll pass that group of cars and drive or I don't bad with those new [Music] there's two laps down for say the big passes later he would hope for a caution that way he would be able to get one of those give a was he tried to pull a fast one on me more often being able to run faster out on the racetrack we talked about build upon the grill it looked pretty good I'm Greg sacks car hey maybe he's your the crews had come in and there goes mark Martin why are we here [Music] here at Darlington let's check it once again with John Curtin Saxe part you saw him just take on four tires the left fire digs in the turns and it really wears it out you can see where the cord is actually showing out the left front tire Greg sacks car completely worn out that's not good and these drivers can really tell it because it exists down to four groups whatsoever the car just slides across the racetrack as Mark Martin goes by the brown Pig automobile and then through the greenback after that mandatory caution flag they threw the green flag on third lap 32 so Rusty Wallace was only able to get about 20 laps how those tires makes sense they wore the tires out of we saw in 21 this all what's happening with four laps on those tires Ned what do you think think he's used him up well he's used something of the newness up and usually they'll slow down about a half a second a lap but he should be able to start in front off the leaders and even though he's almost a lap down guys were here in Darlington and not far away as Timmonsville South Carolina there is no more feisty competitor in Motorsports history than Cale Yarborough he is the fifth all-time winner in NASCAR Winston Cup competition with 83 career victories he has won more southern 500 others in any of the driver five times and last night he went into the Hall of Fame [Music] down by this place when I was ten years old and the soapbox derby and then they built the racetrack here and everything else is history I guess but it's a pleasure to me to be here tonight to be inducted into the Motorsports Association Hall of Fame and I want to thank the people who made there is definitely a Hall of Fame member Ned oh no question been tight when he is in now for a four-tire change they should make a chassis adjustment trying to loosen that car up system it'll fit Rusty Wallace she's out of the way headed down pit road let's fourth pit stop during this caution came back Michael's reporting his temperatures 250 degrees the trying to get water into there they cleaned off the grill it was tense when all this started having a great run now the hood goes down again they'll put in those hood pins but it has been a disappointing number of laps here for Michael Waltrip and now the car the car is stole and the hood will go back up so to try and get an update here they're going to try and push him and see if they can't get him started here michael waltrip was having a great day but right now the Pennzoil Pontiac slowly being pushed off the road hoping to get it restarted back there also overheating and he is gone behind the wall that we are told they're gonna change the radiator in the Maxwell House Pontiac of Bobby Labonte he saw that smoke earlier from his car and here's what happened just a little bit ago Lippert produced the caution flag now this didn't produce a caution flag Sterling Marlin starts in the pits he gets bumped by the 22 car as Ned said he does a 360 keeps going no caution flag as a matter of fact he even took the lead in the ensuing exactly watch left of your screen Jimmy Spencer a little bit of a bump from Steve Grissom in the 29 car and he smacks that front stretch wall science mister stays up against the wall no no reason we know that assisted and that's why we know he bumped with depends all Pontiac and Bill Weber has a report new it is back here W it is back here and this team has been running quite well but obviously problems during this exchange does what happened yeah we have been running a little warm and we just didn't want to let it go any longer so we made sure we cooled it down we have a cars have a history here getting the radiators loaded up with rubber and we're running about 240 250 and we needed to stop and we've got it cooled down right now but we're not sure if we're going to keep it that way all right this team was very happy with the way the car had been running up until that most recent exchange let's go to more degrees thanks Bill we're looking at Robert G this man is a big fan of Kenny Schrader's in fact he was the owner of Kenny's a push car a while back and was hanging the sheet metal on this car until he suffered a stroke and has put him in a wheelchair but he was on the radio - Kenny during this yellow and the conversation went something like this he said Kenny you keep driving like this you just might win this now he just might I'll tell you what tell you what Robert came in the garage area this morning he had a tremendous has strictly and yes as you say being held the signal is being given for one more laughing what happened Jerry we saw when Jimmy Spencer stopped right past the start/finish line a lot of cars were racing off the turn floor we saw a big bunch of them and they didn't know who they were passing but they wanted to pass whenever they could green flag pit stops taking place and some of those cars are being put back where they should have been for the green flag that come out here at Darlington - let's check it once again with John Curtin loot area this weekly caution has our second place runner bill Elliott's crew just a little bit concerned the water temperature of around 250 degrees right now Mike losses like - 15 - 225 we'll see these cars don't run a fan anymore they use electric fan and evidently they don't have the electric fan on this car they depend on the air going through the radiator to the grill to the regular to cool the cars off and on a slow down on the caution flag they have problem keeping them cool there's a look at Billy Elliot a four-time winner here at Darlington twice in the southern 500 including that one time when he won the Winston million back in 1985 can win this an extra train we seen Rusty Wallace they were reported that his car may be overheating and we can see that he does not have the speed in that Miller Genuine Draft 40 yet earlier in the day and behind them the battle for 10 terawatts in the car number 17 good run for Jeff Burton the miranne bestest Ford Thunderbird of Jeff be pleased with their Rondo Wallace's camp are concerned he is reporting the temperature is going up so exactly the thing that John Couey was talking about before the start of the race that rubber getting built up into the rain it's way in there getting jammed in there raising those temperatures it's great a problem for the number two let's go to John Turner Ward Burton's radioed in his water temperature is soaring up to 250 degrees they were achieved it started to rain screwed across the and pull that screen off they've gone to a five wire mesh I use a little more coarser there is you get rubber through the mesh Buddha Street it actually launches into the Lord Merton Johnny's be chillin four laps down in the 25th position that's the car number 31 and as the Rusty Wallace car moves out on John Andretti you hurt RT reads report a moment [Music] southern 500 of the 45th consecutive year glad to have you with us at home there's our leader car number 25 Kenny Schrader has led up 108 of the 212 laps thus far second place car Bill Elliott back in third is Dale Earnhardt and behind him is mark and we are being told there may possibly be a problem with the 6 car the same problem that a lot of cars were having looks like he may be over to call Steve meal the crew chief and said this thing's running along with Mark Martin there the babbling Ford he's a defending winner in this race can't quite say that temperature gauge is the what it might be but they're saying it's running very high [Music] [Music] and that's one reason folks that Ken Schrader's has been running as hard as he has to stay up front because he's getting less of that five car than the other car because he really and truly has been follow anyone as Jerry said he's led over half the race an advantage key with that rub around the grill and exactly what you said vinegar was fair race recap about 106 of 210 lat cautions 431 lat the average speed has been slowed by those caution flags two hundred and twenty two point five four one miles per hour who of our leaders been well ken Schrader has led the bulk of this event Martin Marge Rusty Wallace bill sitter Lance six laps and we had trouble the 12th car crashed down the backstretch he was first and second corner and he's trying to get out way down the back straightaway in cars going every which way in five of the nine car Mike Ross did a great job he locked up the brakes and slid oh boy and here again is what happened a minute ago to derrike cope in this straight arrow Ford once again he was very slow down in the first a second corner there spill Parsons in the melon cart directly in front of him and they're going to come off the second corner and we can see that he is slow now watch these cars as they start going by and they're always something broke on the left rear tire goes flat and pieces start flying everywhere here of rubber look at Mike Wallace dead yeah and Darrell Waltrip also battled the inside a miracle that someone didn't hit Derek because he was spinning around he was right front of a big group of cars so as the left rear tire that exploded that caused the club car to spin and there's part of the racetrack you saw all the damage that tire was doing but eat that fender well on the left side the car looks fine from that side but folks at the other side it took the heavy hit look at the debris down the backstretch this is the front stretch Jerry someone has picked us up and brought it over on the front stretch well we're gonna get a chance for pit stops here on lap 218 we're gonna show you the real split as they come down pit road at 55 miles per hour and let's go to Marty Reid in our leaders pit well this is a for Kenny Schrader's team they were looking to make it at least another 20 laps so now this obviously keep them in a good cycle everything's going real smooth this is going to be a four-tire change let's go to John Curtis what an opportune time for a cross to come out for Bill Elliott the temperature now spraying water in [Music] pull this 11 ha Phil Elliott he's down and away they took some tape off the grill and also took around the winch out bill Weber Michael Waltrip the only two feet car is hitting on the backstretch are in this deep for the four car has been very patient for strategies to keep sterling in the race the front of the car was better go they say the tires the 30 car still in the pits they can need to spray water on the [Music] now here the cars coming out of the pits say them let's say work on it way up to copy screen there comes Rusty Wallace he made a good pit stop but hey he's a lap down he wasn't supposed to the next time around it may be a so accustomed to coming in when the leaders do just forgot but the rule is that he needs to go to the longest the end of the longest and I okay now he's coming back in while we the Albert overheating problem we said they've had snow he's kind of tilted up that's why he stopped earlier because he was gonna have to stop twice anyway so he might as well just come in and he's gonna start at the rear the long slide anyway and feel that it's in with a hood up on that car we had a report that he was overheating John Kernan well what they're trying to do besides Judy Johnson spring water in on the radiator they've also got a hose another hose going our time fighting is overheating from what bill pulled in you could just see all the rubber buildup on the grill and now they're just trying to get him pulled way down and rusty steelhead you see buddy parrot there in the middle of the car working trying to peel some of the sheet metal away that gets the boiler to the radiator we're under caution here at Darlington the fifth time today for a spin involving the car number 12 of derecho back with more of the southern 500 after this [Music] on a beautiful area here in Darlington South Carolina there is that massive crowd on hand for the race and John they're watching a will of an event but we got some problems with some of the competitors yesterday Jerry the big problem is the rubber from the tires is clogging up the grill and stopping the air flow this is a cheese grater as you see the water which represents air pours through fairly freely well we take little cheese here this represents a tire rubber and as we try to pour the water the water just doesn't pour quite as free so as you can see you get through the cheese in the cheese grater clogs things up the rubber in the grill clogs things up and the air can't flow through through the radiator hey John that chicken I'm gonna make chicken cordon bleu later this afternoon bitter you want to join me perfect we'll meet after the race all right chicken and cheese and but we can have a little fun with it but these guys certainly are very concerned about an overheating problem - I couldn't tell if he had hit the wall with the right side or and here's the car number 31 with the hood up that is warrant Burton it looks like they're adding some water to hit and that's the Hardys Chevrolet AG Dillard on the seat and heated is obviously becoming be story of the Mountain Dew southern 500 by the way for you fans you Darrell welcome to answering for know they're many on the mat there Darrell lost three laps during his pit stop when he was trying to cool his Western all the Chevrolet he's being shown tough break for DW was running against 5c our fifth place car build out and the yellow card number 30 is the last car on the lead lap that isn't Michael Waltrip now in the tenth position so with the waning laps here at Darlington Raceway there's racing all around the facility there he is Morgan Shepherd in car number 21 he's been up there at the top and we saw him the last run on the last set of tires in a position the same speed we do it okay now just hasn't been able to make up those positions and that's Carl then they left the last row Jeff Burton and I guess is the only Carlton in the lead lap with Hoosier tires right only Cardinal lead lap all the Hoosiers now John Kernan there's been some serious discussions going on in the Valvoline pits what are they talking about what else Jerry they're talking about water temperature mark Martin's has been running it looks like Michael Walker might have just blown up out there on the racetrack for Steve Neil pointed that out to the NASCAR officials thing hey how about a caution they'd like to get Martin in his race of water on water keep that car cool but just one lap ago mark radio 1016 war is not rising the water temperature is steady down I think we're gonna be over there that's bad news John no water in concrete heavy damage caution flag waving here Dustin car number 77 trying to get a lap back and we can say that the two cars left road tires the racetrack he did hit the wall with the right side stops Jeff Gordon had made a pit stop while we were away so that put him a lap down Dale Jarrett had made a pit stop and puts him two laps down now Jeff Burton also made a pit stop he was in the lead lap he's now as a lap down [Music] again show you what happened to bring up this latest caution flag cocktail what happened we just see them up against the wall where he's made contact with the right side I believe he had had a tire go down beneath it could be the left front tire went flat on the car that caused it to go into the wall we see some pretty heavy damage to the 52 car here comes the leaders Bernard [Music] once go down the alert heart pulls in they were gonna pit in about five last six eleven all should take four tires iron our complaint new car a little bit tight while they've
