NASCAR Classic Full Race: Dale Earnhardt vs. Terry Labonte, Round 1 | 1995 Bristol Night Race

we're getting a break in the weather believe it or not as once again the drivers are on the racetrack and hopefully in a few minutes we'll get green and be ready to race you know the worst thing about this they close the gate crossing the racetrack and I guess I'll get my burger fries that is bad well sorry about that the rain came just to the nick of time in it well let's keep our fingers crossed here that things will be okay for the next three hours or so and we can get all this race in Mark Park is up front along with Terry Labonte Michael Waltrip Gordon Rusty Wallace and Ricky Craven dear top six starters there's the roof cam on Mark Martin's car you still see a little bit of moisture out there to the racetrack and I hope we will be finished with this race by then you can tune in ESPN they're ready here's the green flag of the races [Music] the main concern to a lot of drivers is getting to the inside [Music] if gordon has not been able to do that yet the inside of it there they're we're out here will six marks and a lot of these race cars corner to bottom out the chassis the exhaust looking back on the entire field from leader mark Martin's car go by here and show you that again everybody is very patient at this time walking in single file formation and only completely do so that's how quickly a lap is completed here in under 16 so they're making almost [Music] although of course is to get up front as quickly as possible here is Robert Pressley along with Dale Jarrett there is Ward Burton right behind in the MPM a car and then Jeff Burton to put a little pressure on Robert Redmon they're down [Music] carlins conditions are at their best this is a tough racetrack to pass on damn spot here there whether you have to be extra special careful now we can see that Martin Martin and Terry Labonte 10 have driven away from this battle for third place right now Michael Waltrip the Pennzoil connick is in 3rd rusty Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon all closing in Wallace took a look there to the inside at the end of the backstretch but Michael Waltrip continues to hang on to third it's best starred in 1995 here tonight and now Earnhardt taking a look at the much the saws are on it Bob oh yeah away once he does get admired and he has gone a lap down so Rusty Wallace is a five-time winner here at this racetrack including this event last year he's won the spring race for ties a is pointing and they learn art there I think they got together as it came off the turn up there who will see here here's a replay Burkhart comes in down on the inside yep tap second contact was pretty severe there on the left rear well that'sthat's just sheet metal back there I don't know that it hurt the car too badly but he certainly got to go in the pits and change tires which he's in the piss right now there's the fire that are briefly erupted on the car Jerry and that was raw fuel coming out the left side exhaust and rusty is sitting in a runty that took his right hand and pointed up toward the orifice whose index finger distant at the core of them all four tires and some of the village genuine draft crew also out on pit road the NASCAR forces have pushed of you can send him around and that's exactly what happened as Rusty Wallace has been the first to taste the concrete here at Bristol on this Saturday night we have just begun only 34 laps into this everyone avoided him but it was close as Jeremy Mayfield and Lake speed came down at full speed so Brett Bodine has his second crash of the evening within a few laps and this time the Lowe's machine is really tore up in the rear end he lost a couple of three laps as a matter of fact repairing it here a little bit earlier we began what's going on between those stupid grandpa dots get the worst end Watkins Glen to put it in our Auto Show up there they brought it back Tony first said we're going to do some work on this car and they made it into a short track car they changed literally everything on it they've been fast as they got off the track off the truck rather and onto the track and then we're pretty happy this morning Jeremy doesn't have a lot of laps here he loses this race in the spring but they're excited with their position and their possibilities here tonight but it was a show car two weeks ago when you see these cars in a shopping center or whatever and you say and that's our real race cars by golly they can't be update long well right now you know he said the feel real good to be crazy stuff hard-working real dudes so we definitely attract magicians the main thing that's weak I'm beating while I got and soon we can move on but when you to call is pretty quick we practice real good today and last practice and stuff we just didn't do to get qualified but you know Tennessee Ricky Rudd in for another pit stop Joe Nemechek is also on pit road both are rolling at the moment a tingle base car coming off of turn number four and John has an update on Nemechek Bob that was a four-time the Nemechek has been on pit road the first time they tried to do a four-tire change in London jammed in one of the air guns so they had to go out they that means unless and what that's loose on the left side then they came back in tighten those up but they didn't get a right rear tire change then the left side tires they had to change this time four times in to leave a check screw but they were up they did not lose a lap let's go down to Jerry punch and guys Dale Earnhardt made two pit stops and you watch now from his broken first messed up they take art and watch team do yard here trying to peel the left rear fender away with the car number 21 he was taught on appeal defender way in fact possibly the car the front of the car number 21 filled hard in the left side Dora leader is Bobby Hamilton tries to get another one another one so easily three laps down and let us also tell you that although our scoring showed that Dale Earnhardt was down a lap he is not down a These old Bristol night race replays are the best. It was very surprising just how torn up the field was by the end of the race. How on earth the rad wasn't punctured on the 3 car I'll never know. Darrell Waltrip used to say on the Fox broadcasts that the safest place at short tracks was starting up front and leading a lot because it kept your car clean for the end of the race. This race, Dale Sr came from the back on multiple occasions and we saw just how beat up the 3 was by lap 500. In those closing laps you can also notice how clean the 5 car is by comparison.

I was there that night. Growing up a Labonte fan all the way back to the Piedmont days, it was absolutely amazing to get to see Terry win a race in person. The fact that it happened the way it did made it even crazier. I'm not sure I've ever been more nervous in my whole life as I was at the end of that race. The last 50 laps seemed like they took hours to go by. Amazing night.

Nice to see this get a replay, too, since that 1999 garbage usually gets more attention.

I remember being a tiny kid screaming at the tv during this. Such a fun memory. I hated Dale Sr for years because of this.
