NASCAR Classic Race Replay: Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins first race after 9/11

NBC Sports is live in Dover Delaware for the MBNA Cal Ripken jr. 400 for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series the command to start engines less than three minutes away now this is a sport that long ago became an American tradition it's edgy packed with emotion loved by loyal fans today they have gathered in Dover but they represent a country that is united and as we close in on the command one more patriotic thought as we move closer to race time when these 43 cars take the green flag they will all be moving forward that's the direction our president has asked us to head and the direction our country needs to go and now for your flag to fly coverage let's send it upstairs to Allen Bestwick Betty Parsons and Wally Dallenbach guys all right bill thank you very much and Benny Wally as we look forward to the start of today's race let's talk about the mood in the garage area what it's been like here at Dover over these last three days when the teams arrived on Friday they were all talking about what happened over the past week but as the weekend progressed as they got the cars on the racetrack getting ready to qualify then qualifying and then trying to get their cars ready to race then on a sudden they had to start focusing in on the job at hand getting the race cars ready to race today Wally let's talk championship Jeff Gordon at Richmond found himself in the wall early lost a hundred points to Ricky Rudd and now here at Dover he's qualified smack in the middle of the field yeah just a little bit worried and he should be here because at Dover we have problems sometimes at the start of the race you're on the edge here so much the first few laps like in the spring race spring race 25 car got down on the apron we'll see here in a second and all of a sudden there was a big wreck and when you're in the middle of the pack it's tough to get away from it because you have walls on the inside and walls on the outside of the racetrack here we'll get a ride with Michael Waltrip onboard he thinks he's got it made I think I'll drive down here on the apron ah yes clear racetrack and Wow there's Bill Elliott so it's really tough to get through these wrecks when it happens Dover is nicknamed the Monster Mile and Betty it's not just a nickname it's a reputation well and it's deserved as well because it eats race cars there's no way you saw that crash in the corner all the cars come down the bottom of the racetrack if you're going through on the racetrack you're gonna get involved on the backstretch a front stretch inside an outside wall seat there's no place to go to avoid it and the cars are all gonna go down the hill the cause of straightaways are banked nine degrees they're going down and hit that inside wall and do a lot of damage pretty physically strenuous day for the drivers too Wally yeah it is and it's been shortened it used to be 500 laps around this place was a lot but still 400 laps is a lot it's a tough racetrack and it's tough to get a lot of grip so guys are gonna really have to be careful especially at the start of the race because that High Line although the Busch cars ran some rubber they're still gonna be very slippery the pre-race staging is all been cleared away the drivers are buckling into their cars and their thoughts now just before they get set to fire the engines after all the pre-race ceremony and all they've had to think about the last 10 days or what right now the drivers are thinking one thing about what they're gonna do when the car goes down in turn one let's go down trackside now for the four famous words that will get today's race going and now for the most famous words in all of racing represent to your gentleman has been handling this chore for 30 years the vice president and director of auto racing here at Dover Downs mr. Melvin Joseph gentlemen start your engines [Applause] [Music] while the drivers sit on pit road for a moment get the cars warmed up before they roll out let's get a virtual look at the Dover Downs track for me a sports VP let's take a ride on thunder motion powered by E a sports the bottom of the racetrack is the place to be early on Tony Stewart is in my way as we go down to the front stretch and I look top to the inside and once again should be able to pass on the bottom of the racetrack but you see I ran on the end we saw cheering they do do that in June you cannot kiss hatred off turn two you let the car drift back out to the wall unless there's a curl on the outside Tony Stewart is there one through three at four again right down to the bottom of the racetrack trying to stay low as the tires where is he get warm you will move up the racetrack early on we'll see all the cars on the very bottom so that's a virtue a look at what it's like to rock it around this monster mile and last September till the engine expired Ron Hornaday the pasture softener at bestest rookies this race Row 5 Todd Bodine with 3 Busch Series wins here and Bill Elliott three of his four top fives in this season have been in the last seven races Tony Stewart won this race last fall from the 27 starting spot he'll go from row six with Stacy Compton on the inside of those seven guineas straighter an American flag for car today and on the outside Kevin Harvick back in row 8 Rusty Wallace has three wins here none on the concrete surface and Joe Nemechek miss the race in June because of injury Robert I Bobby Hamilton with a very Carr in yesterday's final practice Casey Atwood has a Busch Series win here back in 99 Elliott Sadler was the fastest in final practice he goes from wrote in with buckshot Jones who's got his only Winston Cup top-10 here at Dover back in 98 well inside of 11 Kyle Petty won the first racer in concrete and Jeff Burton 31st our worst the last three DOMA races and there he is Jeff Ford the points leader on the inside of row 12 this is his worst over start Kevin LePage on the outside row 13 it's Ward Burton the southern 500 winner he finished 14th here in June sterling marlin and his dodge he was the sixth place runner a couple of months ago they told a 500 winner Michael Waltrip is in the next row with Robert Pressley in his Ford on the inside of row 15 fast cars in final practice Jerry Nader in row 21 and Kurt Busch she was above the five fastest in the final practice he will start in 43rd position for drivers failed to qualify for today's race final reports from pit road before the green flag Marty Allen Ricky Craven starts fifth with a very good race car today and here in June he finished fourth that ever since that Sunday they've been anxiously awaiting this Sunday and Ricky said I know it's my week and you know how Ricky doesn't play very much golf but in the Jeff Gordon golf tournament Thursday he sank to 30-foot birdie putts to help his team win the tournament who knows maybe the driver of the tide ride can make it a clean sweep this weekend and come up with his first ever NASCAR Winston Cup Series win to Matt Yocum Marty Elliott Sadler hopes to keep Ricky Craven in that over whatever cups will be the shot of his second career win although Sadler's literally one career lap he did set quick time in the bottle practice sessions Saturday afternoon he has confidence because the last time he pulled off that beat he won its first career race on the concrete at Bristol he has the same four chocks as crystal in a different race car hoping for the same result from the 19th position today Matt in 1976 Bill Elliott made his first Winston Cup start today he makes his 650 of trailing only Ricky Rudd Terry Labonte and Dave Marcus and career starts I asked bill what he thought about that he says deal with the underlying about 650 as it has a 65 and I'm not retired yet and they think they have a car that could win at the track today Alan all right Dave half a lap from the green flag 140,000 seats around the Dover Downs International Speedway I can't see any of them that are unoccupied I thought that we would have some empty seats today I'm so impressed with these fans that show up to watch this great race there's the man will wave the green flag this was supposed to be the day of Cal Ripken juniors last ball game at Camden Yards obviously due to the tragedies that's been put off some but he's here nonetheless to celebrate his great career with his fellow man his fellow athletes and he's going to back his teammate Tony Stewart goes on the inside and takes the seventh spot away he's losing those BOTS to the 66 but I'm Dave Burke what's going on down there according to Bobby Labonte is true he just got loose coming off of to in fact he radioed where's you got through it clean as a whistle look like bill just lost a little bit there BP got a little bit sideways 1 & 2 bobby was in the wrong place at the wrong time yeah boy [Applause] 20 laps in the body's got a very messed up race car they will take a lot of work just to get this car back on the racetrack to make glass Bobby had picked his way back up to sixth in the championship standings he's just 35 points from Sterling Marlin in twenty three ahead of Dale Earnhardt jr. that's gonna cost him let's mention the Kyle Petty has gone to the garage earlier and let's check out what happened to Bobby there we see the 9 car of Elliott we see that big wiggle he has to go up the hill to make contact the body slam against the 18 and both cars almost like synchronized swimming although this is not an Olympic event here folks and leprosy Jeff Gordon going right between the two cars look at the page gold car almost looked like Bill could have saved that but when he got into the 18 it he he would okay and then contact there it really broke him loose cuz I got up together up in the marbles there bobby was in a wrong spot just that that and he took the worst of it I believe the Bills Bills got some damage on the right rear and the right front boy Bobby caught back and then just the car whipped around and caught the right front all right Kenny Wallace in the middle Chevrolet sees all and he says thank good tonight [Music] mr. this focus listen [Music] did that hurt just hearing it ouch just hearing it hurts folks let's go to Marty Snyder well island there were a few pit stops among them Johnny Benson who had already picked up ten spots in that short amount of time he started 37th was running 27th when he came down pit road a little tight off they took one pound out of both left-side tires which should loosen him up just a little bit but they made tremendous progress in that first run for Johnny Benson today Byrnes and Marty this is the biggest piece of bodywork that came off of bill Elliott's car it's the rear bumper cover they got to the good stuff too that needed to come away the fenders and everything to try to repair it for Bill they think that the radiators okay which is good news but that cars really banged up and they a pilot Elias brought as sprint dodge back to the garage Kyle reports your car the leaking fluid as a terminal yeah I hope it's terminal wouldn't running better than that it should be terminal anyhow but it broke I don't know ever run 10 laps that's good we got 10 laps in the day but you know it's pretty frustrating cuz you had a pretty good car that that would drive good and riding good and you know it seems like we've been hitting myths this year we've been pretty good with the car we've missed it with the motor and now we were pretty good when we've been pretty good with the engine we've missed it with the cars so we'll get over it eventually the last time a Dodge won here at Dover his father the King Richard Petty took it to Victory Lane bill back in 1975 well Matt Ward Burton was on pit road and early stop for the caterpillar car his car just way too loose all over the racetrack crew chief Tommy Baldwin indicated to us a Ward came in for tires tool made the chassis adjustment sent it back out just missed a Lutz tire on pit road and we know how narrow this pit road is and we know what damaged tires could do to the front of the cars just ask Johnny Benson right now yeah that's from the race back in June when Benson ran into a tire from another car and wound up damaging the nose of his car to the point the engine overheated and he was done for the day but in the first caution here in Dover [Music] at the Dover Downs International Speedway NASCAR on NBC bringing you the NBN a Cal Ripken jr. 400 and run to the first caution of the race came out at lap 21 when Bill Elliott and Bobby Labonte crashed in turn number 2 it's our leader Dale Earnhardt jr. as he weaves his car back and forth trying to keep those tires clean here's Jeff Gordon a points leader as he drives to the 2 spinning cars cars on the inside cars on the outside and the C's party for him here we go this one looks like Jeff's part backs off the throttle [Music] sometimes get a lot of smoke back there but we talked about for Gordon starting back in 23rd that it was going to be anxious while he worked his way to the front there's one incident that he was able to dodge body the body in the garage area let's go to Matt Yocum and Alex shades of 1997 Bobby you weren't in the lead but nonetheless you're back here in the garage early yeah it's a shame Congress told us at the beginning but had plenty of adjustments and make it better and just web met debated name how Bad's the car hurt pretty man it's bad place to be over there in the wrong place wrong time just hurt pretty bad up we'll probably get it fixed but it's gonna take a while he certainly is going to take a hit and the points he entered sixth in Dover with only a twenty three point lead over Dale Earnhardt jr. Dave and man Vallely reported to his crew that the steering was okay on the nine they haven't lost any fluid through the radiator and so basically they were going to bang out the fenders and cut some up and send it back out but the problem was they lost laps because they couldn't get the hood pin down the hood pins have to be in before they head back onto the track and the hood was misaligned with the pins that come out of the frame and so they lost least two laps because they couldn't get the hood back down the NASCAR officials would let it go green flag [Applause] they keep play went on the outside of Bernard Junior trying to take the lead away in Hornaday [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and Ricky Craven to the front started xxx finish for here we go you heard Marty Snyder talk about he wore a golf tournament on Thursday this is the day for Winston Cup win number one his team won a doctor you don't want to give that much credit listen to Jeremy Mayfield a 12-car has moved into the third position [Music] of [Music] sniper and looky here Jetport it five [Music] [Applause] kevin harvick off the banking Gordon trying to get 12 [Music] [Applause] [Music] never see that chipboard right now is almost 5 behind the leader Ricky Craven and as he rode side-by-side you can see that number hit it bigger and bigger [Applause] [Music] while watching Gordon and thinking back to body the body's accident this weekend NASCAR has mounted black box crash recorders they did it yesterday into NASCAR Busch Series cars today into Winston Cup cars Gordon's cars carrying one the party's cars carry one it's an experiment to see how they are fare throughout the 400-mile distance today while they got a test under adverse conditions on the body's car Ricky Cravens a 32-car the tide lied the leader of the race he ran so well here in June almost won at one point time looked like he was going to win his first Winston Cup race he was exactly the same a different bar for a new part brand new car because they felt like that in June the car was really good a long run but they wanted to get make something that was a little girl and the short runs and [Music] he is very very let that lay down open couldn't take advantage Craven team has really been coming around lately he's action three out of the last five races and in June that's the line a tricky private back there if there wasn't it was close contact played okay [Music] Kraven news of that high lane is like waving the red flag in front of the bull at Dale jr. and that's the line that's work Ricky Craven made so much of his time here [Applause] and someone now is televisions renderscript breathing off cord gives the last time and he will be around the Speedway father is probably clicking off somewhat laptime stone which is actually fat blood that boy used to be my spotter and he's saying you're the fastest car or right here where you're running this 1/10 of a second faster than if you're running down low aerial views of dover courtesy of the united states army [Music] Craven and Earnhardt jr. have opened up to second advantage on third place Jeremy Mayfield then you've got Ron Hornaday and fourth and Ricky Rudd in fifth now completed 37 of 405 you're watching NASCAR on NBC [Music] new leader at Dover Downs International Speedway Dale Earnhardt jr. [Music] in jr. 400 Ricky Craven now second on holiday has taken third Mayfield let's look at the lead change jr. got that lead the old-fashioned way he just knocked it out of the way to tell you what's a left for the bumper cover gentle thing push in down which saves the car but gauges the position [Music] how much we can see the bumper cover pendants [Music] so Dale jr. now out in front Craven now fighting with more today for second Rudd has taken fourth away from Mayfield who's fallen back to fifth it's been a great racetrack for Dale Earnhardt jr. to whiz in there for NASCAR Busch Series events and his worst Winston Cup finish is 16th in three tries and we talked with Dale earlier there again about why this racetrack has been so good for it the reason why I run so well here is that the tracks really forgiving for a driver who may overdrive the car a little bit or make a lot of you know make a lot of mental errors and stuff like that so it's got a lot of banking to save the car when you get out of control [Music] slow it down getting in car that's pretty candid issue he said I have attention don't drive the car and this rain threat will let me do it Jeff overdrive here yeah you want here a couple times yeah I'm here a couple times but going down in these corners you really do have intensity because this is a racetrack you need to be aggressive to go over that line then you ruin your chances damn Junior's open up a 1.6 second lead on Ricky Craven check the interval there it is and now Craven fights with Hornaday for the runner-up spot let's check in on pit road with Dave burns and this weekend Mike beam makes his 500th career start as a crew chief and view those now have been with the Ricky Craven but his first win was right here with another guy Bill Elliott back in 1990 [Music] before but mike tells me he doesn't feel old enough to have started 500 races also tells me right now their car is neutral it's just quite as quick as juniors last lap liars about a half a mile an hour slower than Dale Junior's and this racetrack has always been temple going down the court and the cars slide in the grocery thing those front tires sliding across traffic have we seen Ricky Rudd trying to take that spot away from one of they and one of the things that the teams do is increase the camber in the right front go inside that virtual garage and show you exactly what we're talking about there to see that car that's zero camber they leaned the coin that's negative camber can't believe it or not that's what makes the tyre turn better but you see the contact patch is so very very narrow when you go to court it's opposed to the tires boats come out so the contact patch comes all the way across the tire unfortunately the more you lean that tire in the Blessed it makes contact no way across desire and you wear the inside of the tire at sometimes these guys will really lay that tire in what happens after 70 80 laps you wear that right front tire out check in on our championship leader and he has moved into the top ten [Applause] as we watch rut go after Craven for second [Applause] and takes that spot away routine thank you very much then he's laid out the window you see that big star on the hood of the 28 Guardsmen been replaced this week with an American flag are dimensioned the championship leaders moved into the top 10 there's Jeff Gordon Arbutus 7 isn't that amazing he's not wearing now back in 23rd is going to work on Dale Jarrett she caution trouble in turn one Jeremy Mayfield into the wall what was that you were talking about a minute ago he's got a right front tire looks to me like he is lost alright second caution 55 laps in see a little fire under the car it's knocked the exhaust system off the car those are the tailpipes hopefully no one runs across those and Oh Jeremy is okay hard hard with Mayfield running ninth at the time of the crash you see the fluid running across the racetrack water oil and finally we see Jeremy starting to move inside the car the wininet has been taken down now that's good sign there there aren't many easy hits here at Dover no no and I'm sure all the cars here they come everyone will be down pit road this time leaders did not stop on the first caution most of the guys in the back half of the field did now they'll all come in stops at lap 55 bill and Ron Hornaday will be one of the first to hit his stall just at the start/finish line outstanding start for Hornaday car just a little bit tight that'll loosen it up with a chassis adjustment in the left it's four times that fuel the wedge riches in they make the chassis adjustment we'll head back out burn failed the leader is in Dale Earnhardt jr. he has for just a slight air pressure trust but the car was just a little bit tight in the middle of the border he's very good at turns three and four and he said just making a half-pound adjustment I don't want much he's going to get beat out of Pittsburgh Ricky Rudd [Music] it was bad news they made one of the half rounds in on the right rear of wedge and they also went pound of air pressure in the right front he said he wasn't concerned about the leader one-tenth of upon the stopwatch his biggest concern the 24 of Jeff Gordon he was coming fast check the race off pit road how they go to that all-important scoring strike ricky rudd get out first never see red go by Earnhardt jr. why big get back to Dale Jarrett Midtown Easter [Music] barely barely pick you up at Jeff Gordon and Rusty Wallace so Gordon has moved up to the what six position under put 43 guys together on a race track and only one winner is going to be declared but they're going to see the excitement hopefully we just ease their minds just a little bit get their minds off of what's been going on for last week or so [Music] ricky rudd out front and of course on the front of his car the American flag Rud saluting NASCAR fans but also very careful this weekend to mention today and we were talking yesterday with one of the members of a race team whose brother is a missing New York firefighter one of the NASCAR Busch Series teams have been up in New York all week and came down here just for a day and get away to go back to his normal life if he could and work on a race car for a day and today it was back to New York to continue the search for his brother and that was the mando Fitz own team that ron hornaday drives for still clean it up from Jeremy Mayfield's crash so let's take a break get his ricky rudd leading at Dover you're watching NASCAR on NBC checking four weeks as a matter of fact I think Michael is warning in the drivers meeting and he announced at the Talladega rules would be the same for the race coming up in Talladega as we raced in Daytona said there'd be a slight modification for the Fords but other than that it be the same package everybody's remembering the heroes let's check our NASCAR Busch Series update yesterday Jeff green scored a surprise win Ryan Newman dominated the race spot got bounced back in traffic after Green took two tires on the last pit stop Kevin Harvick opened a little war ground on Jason Keller who series championship as they moved toward conclusion of their series who's our craftsman front Series update their scheduled race last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway was postponed until October the fifth but let me remind you that was this the same kind of car that Ricky had when he won at Richmond two weeks ago they made very minor changes all evening long and Ricky ended up winning that race it up at lap 70 Dale Earnhardt jr. Ricky brown Dale Jarrett Tony Stewart and Ricky Craven are your leaders at Dover back into over downs International Speedway under caution for the third time in the NBN a Cal Ripken jr. 400 Brett Bodine with a little spin in turn four how did it start well a may got a little bit of help on that spin but we'll take a look at it see here we got buckshot underneath it looks like buckshot gets into the left rear of Brett Bodine Brett does everything he can save it and he does everything he can to keep it off the wall does a good job doing that I still don't understand how in the world he managed to spend not get it hit the wall or get hit by another car but he did it he managed it doesn't look at it one more look and now we see I don't know we first thought that maybe buckshot Jones 244 gotten a little bit loose and as they chased the car uphill Cadillac Bill Elliott did he caught the left rear of Brett Lodi scar from that angle hit conclusive Matt Yocum has an update on Jeremy Mayfield for us Matt Allen Jeremy amico can attest that any hit at Dover is a hard one after he walk into the infield media care center and he was talking with doctors they found out that he had a slight loss of consciousness while sitting in the race car after the crash they feel like he has a mild concussion they are going to transport him to Kent General which is now called Bay Health Medical Center for observation and a cat scan test but the good news he was alert and he was talking to his crew chief Peter suspens oh and the doctors so while they prepare to transport Jeremy we're going to be under caution for a few more laps tober is one of the tracks on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit that has no tunnel and the only way in and out of the infield is through a crossover gate at the start/finish line there you see the workers they've removed the stanchions and the turnbuckles if you will that hold that gate in place during racing in a moment when they get set to transport Jeremy they'll swing that gate open to allow the ambulance out of the infield so we're gonna be at there they go now so we're gonna be under caution here for a few more laps while we wait for that to tell stories about that but anyway rather told me that Mike will be out of the car probably before the end of the year he will have knee surgery and it looks like he could be out early as Talladega maybe even as early as Charlotte now popular belief in the garage area is that Robby Gordon will replace Mike Skinner in this car the belief of many people is also that if Mike Skinner goes out early this year that Robby Gordon will also replace him in the car as well Allen I'm gonna go dry off now thank you my wife and Angela spent too much time together but no you're right Mike is Mike's looking to get that done so he can be completely healed for when the season starts next year so the only thing about that is he was supposed to be my teammate in 24 hours now he's leaving me hanging on that is they've lucked out with that caution unfortunately was due to their teammate but you can see they also had it cut so there was a tire cop of developing down here looks like good news and Bobby Hamilton Jr the 55 guard trying to get my jet 40 and folks I don't think Jeff Gordon that's a place the Gordon just lost to Hamilton pit road and get that fender fixed a little bit better but they're not going to make it as good as that thing was to begin with the fighters on these bars are so important when you doing that kind of damage you can't get sick 200% so lap number 80 at Dover [Music] and usually when you do damage like that it'll usually tighten the car up when you affect the nose like that the car will get tighter it won't wanna turn as good as it did before you see the 7 1977 of his problems shot the championship well we got to take advantage of the situation we haven't been able to do that over there over the season jeff has had some problems along the way and we've had some problems but when the days he's had his problems up until Richmond we haven't been able to capitalize and take advantage of the big point swing like we did the other week at Richmond I brought his 222 times behind in today's race ten events to go see right now he's gained a little bit of ground his gait 27 points right now on Jeff Gordon but this race were to go green flag for a couple vision the doctors say that little healing Todd and he will be back in this race bar at some point how much in a corner syrupy peeling the groom has moved up so much higher in just a hundred laps I mean they're almost up to the wall and that's usually sounds some cars that are not handling very well this racetrack makes that so easy to see the white concrete about the dark rubble from the tires as a matter of fact when they first made this surface concrete they tried to change the name of it the catchphrase to white lightning the Monster Mile and feel like a monster it's a great nickname like we said to at the beginning of the program it's not just a nickname it's a reputation where they pitched up for Joe Nemechek trouble the engine has expired we got reports earlier that Kurt Busch was on seven soldiers and now he is on zero cautions out who's gonna get a lot back Lashkar to get a laptop terry labonte billowing and buckshot Jones Bush heading toward the garage to join Kyle Petty Jeremy Mayfield you know Kurt Busch was sharing a pit with a 93 car of Dave Blaney when this race started well when eighteen fell out they moved all their stuff I'm sorry the wrong car moved that they way down and turned four they moved halfway toward the garage and now they can finish the other half and we see Kurt Busch just as he backs off it seems like the engines won't implode just when you hit hock off the game hey before you get to the corner leaders were last in at the 56 lap they'll stop now at lap 117 big opportunity for Jeff Gordon's team to try and fix that fender ville and that's one thing they've just finished talking about on the radio Jeff is loose in tight off they want to make a small air pressure adjustment but he said make sure you fix that left front that left front fender make sure you get that fixed so let's see when they do he comes to his stop in front of his pick where they go around to the right side first and they'll swing around to the left right side tires going on again an air pressure adjustment for go to the left side working on that bender trying to pulled away from the tire they did say this caution was a huge break for them there should be a little longer stop than usual for this team will give up but that record died back out front a Sterling Marlin heads to a good stop for those guys and they dodged a big bullet back a great battle on pit road by Tony Stewart in the 88 and a villain or to you Stewart's car bad lose they went out a half a pound on all four tires a great stop by the Home Depot guys Dave madly Dale Earnhardt jr. the crew may not have gotten under 14 seconds for that $10,000 but they did make a slight air pressure adjustment Junior said he was a little bit free up against the wall that he was a little bit tight from me over driving it into the corner which of course they could not adjust for him hatch for the 28 car of Ricky Rudd they made a slight air pressure adjustment but the car is still very very good center of the corners Benny mentioned that they took an air but they took air one half pound out of the right front tire to try to help DJ stop Tony Stewart enter Kent Road in 1311 [Music] and buddy they may miss Jessel with air pressure with track bar with the wedge he says the car is okey for two three laps it's like snapping your fingers and the car goes extremely to the lose side that's how the car in begin right now meanwhile Kevin Harvick joked around before the Revolution when he struggles in one car or either butcher cup car the other car first race currently he's riding has been a stop 16.4 but they lost him off of pit road that came out seventh and now have fallen back to eighth now the fact that they have also sought it have no concerns very very good your car tends to get the longer run their car starts loose gets tight that is a very good condition for Sterling Marlin he was very fast at the end of the last run behind him on track and night Jerry Nadeau they have had an outstanding day very few changes on that car today the car very good on that last run and either to Matt Yocum three times over winner Rusty Wallace who won three-straight and then they concrete as a place to see first first poppy the top ten fighting kite I talked to Jeff Passan the engineer on this team he says it pulled a spring rubber out of the left rear and they went back to their original bank of the street wake tears into the hand side and he hits the inside wall eighth caution of the race that were just past halfway Kenny Wallace got to get one of his two laps back from Ricky Rudd robber freshly started 28 had been up into the top 10 earlier now he's crashed and turn to lolly I found office taking this might be the same situation as the last two very high on the racetrack at the edge of the debris and you just looks like you can not run up there and it looks like I'm not sure where this happened looks like it happens just past the middle this happens going in the corner so yep now the worst of other cars around could have been contact with some other cars he started down the corner file that one under inconclusive and the radiator is broken in the car as he was trying to get the car unstuck out of the grass and so a lot of water leaders pitted a201 we're at 2:27 do they come in looks like it looks like yes [Music] looks like everybody well that 201 never going to have to stop twice more anyway so this time they can stop now and only stopped once Marty Serling is in running eight Vinnie as we said he starts lose he gets tighter as the run goes along they will make a chassis adjustment and a four-tire stop to Bill ever Jeff Gordon's car suddenly got very very loose track bar adjustment four tires and fuel we go down pit road to Mack huge Patterson took a half around a wedge out of the 20 car of Tony Stewart he says his car really didn't feel much better today no adjustments on the 28 earlier in the race of 28 crew put his car out front did they do it again they kept him out front ruts crew having a better day on pit row you're in Madhapur they might have done that second he might've beaten the eighth card it was very very close I believe he Elliott and Bobby Labonte slips through the middle of that one he goes right through the middle on lap 79 he guilt makes in contact with my career presence car and damages so they go and get that one repaired then down the front stretch it makes contact with Ron Hornaday Hornaday car spins and once again Jeff Gordon misses another crash and then he got a lug nut fall off on a pit stop went back to 18th in line picked his way up through some traffic then boy what a day it's been a piece of cake today yeah no problem but there's a couple of other cars on the racetrack that you know what we've seen the eight car the 2888 they've been front all up front all day but the one car Kenny Wallace he's very very fast he's still a lap down the 33 car Joe Nemechek he wasn't lap down he got it back and folks if this typical if he could just somehow get his way up in the first ten top ten Nemechek will be heard from before the days over let's get out of pit road Marty Kyle I don't to play this they were fairly successful with the two tires and a lot of people also have taken notice of a lot of cautions today so some guys taking some Gamble's and gaining a lot of track position Glen he was that we'd run 500 miles here they're just all you could do to stand as the race is over and 400 miles is really truly not that much better the unique characteristic of this racetrack besides the steep banking of the corners two things number one the straightaways look how steeply that's bad that's 9 degrees that's as steep as the corners in Indianapolis the straightaways are bang the other thing is to dive downhill into the turns let's watch Kevin Harvick will count down the straightaway sandwich and relax we've wheels come back one thousand one one thousand two one thousand about two and setup leave that to Tony since they're done performances have been much better they were gone just qualify a little better they'd have a greater chance to win they started 39th enrichment in his fourth time on car and five started 41st today and he's taken for it from Jeff Gordon they do one pass car Winston Cup when he took the season closer in Atlanta last year [Music] we're back at the Chicago race he led a lot of laps in that one that had an oil leak sent him to pit road for hairs a chance to win on that day team standings for heavy [Music] 25 car is the fastest car on the racetrack right now rascal relax [Music] we've got six seconds to make them on the 28th yeah he's deadly awfully fast 20 laps away from pit stops under the green if it stays that way [Music] as ricky rudd continuing to catch the tail end of the field and being involved in that traffic is allowing Dale Jarrett the close in he's put John and treading a lap down now the 16th place car Jeff Burton goes a lap down and it's all going to be about pitstop if it goes green the rest of the way the pit stops are going to make the difference on who wins this race probably the top three bars will change four tires but a Jeff Gordon the Tonys person those guys back six seven seconds behind you think they might try to take two tires pick up that extra two second absolutely left a few seconds they'll be definitely a lot of gambling going on from about fourth place like that and the end of that is you don't need a full tank of fuel if you need a full tank of fuel it's going to take you just as long to change the tires and overthrow the fuel tank but not heating with one one can one can be plenty but this is the perfect situation for those guys to make that pit stop in under 13 seconds and hitting 28 car and I think all of a sudden rusty closed up much more on the 28 car than he thought he would because it looked like he started to try to abort him just about the time he touched it but a great now maybe with buying pressure the chera per second back in fifth I think ruin has the potential to get up to the second spot but I don't think he's gonna get you Jr back on bonus points relieving the tire sets that they put on the car are that they be consistent and so they can count on them in there the numbers they put out every time and according to the top Paradis Darrin is going to lose that position putting the top here at the crew chief this set of tires just does not match their expectations what they thought they were going to do and that is the trouble that Dale Jarrett is having right now in the end that's the slang that gets used around the garage area they'll carve out a bad set of tires is nothing wrong with the manufacturer performance characteristics don't match they wit they don't get what they wish for these fires have a a rate tool and if the tires are not accept you know they're not they're consistent but they're not exact so if you had a tire that say it's a spring rate a little bit different than the last set it's better you're kind of chasing the tires all day and that laughs at finally got away from them and you got to ride it out until the next pit having been bumped by Ricky Rudd the leader as he went by him to lap him a little payback in turn four the leader gets spun out he comes back to fifth after a pit stop he's up to third now Dale Earnhardt jr. lap 362 by Dale Jarrett for the lead switch back in traffic with an ill-handling car then he gets tacked by Tony Stewart racing 4/5 moments ago cause for the 11th caution of the race eventful to say the least Barry it been and now we're getting set for a last 8 laps scrambled to the finish Dave and Tony areas the crew chief he makes the calls what about it can your driver hold him off for eight laps hold them off your net run so hopefully we can anything happen on the restart they get too wide or something you know it might not be able to but won't we get in this corner four days I think we can all right he's got a good seat up here he's watching them coming out for party now we were gonna talk to Tony fer I have to do you have a shot he said absolutely [Music] now set certainly an emotional day a huge race a great wind congratulations yeah I was uh we had a good car yesterday and everybody was telling me that we had to get a car and I just didn't know you know and the car was sliding around an awful lot but it was good when it counted now that was uh those last few laps we were able to get by those guys and move on and but you know it feels good to be back in the race car and I'm glad I could be the guy to win the race honking carried American flag around there and made me feel good made a little cash for other rescue efforts today two out of your own pocket yeah actually donated a hundred all the way out and $10,000 for every pit stop under 13 under 14 seconds by my guys and I think the totals around 70 to 80 maybe 90 grand sir but we won today so might I add on to it he'll bail on the racetrack early you must have known your car was pretty good getting around Craven you obviously wanted to get to the front went to the front several times right after restarts yeah the car was good and I knew see it's uh it's so hard to pass here after 10 or 15 laps and I knew if I was going to get by anybody had to do it soon so I try to attack early on restarts and stuff like that but I want to say let's up the concrete twigs road and detail and hope somebody back home had a beer cold it might be late but did you see rod go around I didn't I kind of started sliding a little bit but you know that's a shame because I knew his long you know he was sitting there sliding I was no I know he was upset and you know but that's you know we've won the race and I'm pretty happy about that but I hate to see him lose it like that I'm he had a good car and I wanted to race him to win if I could and we were kind of catching him so it'd have been fun now tell me about your co-driver Wilson will he be back again next week I don't know Wilson seems to be good luck actually I told my guys they're racing it Donnelly was like being on the deserted island you it I know he's got the nickname rubber head in the garage area now I never understood it but I understand it now some very strong words between you two what was said in the garage area well it was just a sort of a one-on-one discussion then we didn't discuss too much it's too big of a crowd around so we'll discuss it later it's difficult to have perspective but this was a great run for your time Ricky well it really was you know I mean literally he was bit definitely very very fast all racing any faded there for long stretch and he was a fast guy at the end like I said when we spawn we get something of the car I want to bang the fender up or something it's just it's just a shame you got to deal with nonsense like this you know I used to have a lot of respect for that guy and got I wouldn't give him two cents right now you describe the disappointment it's just kind of hard to put it in words I guess the link keeps me keeps me going I think about what's going on here and I look take on the incident between yourself and Ricky Rudd might take an incident he was getting really lapped me as you're out and you run into me in the back straightaway and as I went out of court I just stood in the throttle try to pass them outside he slowed up a little bit I got the tail in Devon that's my story a lot of speculation possibly a payback for the post race incident at Bristol I wasn't payback we're going too fast to do stuff like that but he's got a cootie his memories pretty short he rammed the crap out of me at Bristol you know and now he forgets about it you know I named the guy cone had a long time ago I think I'm gonna name that dude that he got to hell the problem out there I tell you you did have a slight conversation with him in the garage Jerry what took place oh he was hot because he was leading the race and he got spun you know but I'd be hot too but he's got a witch the way he drives he's a good driver and I respect him I didn't respect him at Bristol not even respect him he got Riddle out and he ran into me so you know but I tell you what I was gonna go for it try to hold my lap back I didn't run in the back of them spend amount purpose to tell you that but I was gonna give them hell that's rusty walls Dave and it always seems like we leave the monster mile after its reared its ugly head with somebody and it's a little less tense down here right now but that could be because Dale Jarrett hasn't had a chance to chat with Tony Stewart yet what would you like to say to Tony when you do I will work that out one day you know that used to be I consider this just a bad day but we ran well and in light of what's happened about two weeks ago everything's alright we're okay we'll race again next week and things aren't so bad so just a kind of different way nothing less competitive not the I'm not mad about what happened but you got to kind of put things in perspective and you know you know it sure it hurt us in the points and I'm a little disappointed in what we did there but uh again we'll race to another day there's a lot of people that can't say they can do their job in the other day so we'll be alright and you can see his perspective he wears the New York Fire Department cap on his head to try to keep his own perspective Marty and with Tony Stewart what happened with you and DJ Tony you know DJ is one of my good friends and you know I don't want to I don't want to get into him like that but uh you know we when I was following him he was going in the corner and running up to the middle of the track and turning down to protect his spot so you know I don't think he realized I got his big a run as I got in three times I slammed on the brakes they keep from running into him and that's just that's that's what happens that's what happens when Goodyear gives us a piece of junk tire like that that makes you race you know and be that careless I guess so you know it's it wasn't intentional he's the last guy I would touch so it's just a shame to happen because he's a good friend to me so I hate to do it to you someone in your defense while he was saying looked like the hole just kind of closed up before you could do anything about and what the Lonnie was running you know it did but you running that line like that you're subjecting yourself to somebody getting under there in the middle of corner and I did I got a good run and you know I followed him off the floor and that's as close to him coming off before as I've been all day so you know when I got down to the bottom and got on the gas and ran through the center of corner like I had all day I got under there little further than I think he thought and you know when he came down and there wouldn't he were for me to go I cut down and got down to the apron and went anywhere else I could go so what you're saying is very unintentional what happened oh absolutely I mean he's the last guy we're gonna hit on purpose so uh not only hitting it back on purpose I'm so tired of seeing guys I race with get hurt it's just it's hard alright Allen good finish though for Tony Stewart today wound up in fifth I think Victory Lane is the only place people are smiling back toward that garage right now oh yes this is like a short track situation just like we've been to Mars will a rich were someplace ever see Rusty Wallace Ricky Rudd they're discussing things as you can tell yelling going on back there the NASCAR pit and the NASCAR official he's letting them say their piece as long as it doesn't get too bad until the hands came in you know and he's got a tough job there Rick he should be bad I mean that that was a BS deal dude but on the other on the other hand I'm glad finally Rusty Wallace somebody said yeah that's what I did I mean that's what he did I'm man enough to say that's when he did he was hot too so best finish of the season for Jerry Nadeau right behind winner Dale Earnhardt jr. who gets his fourth career NASCAR Winston Cup victory Jeff Gordon dodges all of the problems that seemed to be happening to him and around him the Elliott Sadler finishes back in 14th he was the last car on the lead lap Todd boat on the first car a lap down Jeff Burton 21st Kenny Wallace after the two unscheduled pit stops 22nd there's 31 through 40 we see most of these cars out of competition Mark Martin was on the racetrack and Bobby Labonte after that incident early on in the race will finished 36th 142 laps down and Kyle Petty the first one out after just 13 laps with an engine problem again Jeremy Mayfield involved in a hard crash but he was released after a check in the local hospital nothing moral more serious than bruises and a chipped tooth and our championship standings now with nine races to go Ricky Rudd gains but 10 points on Jeff Gordon today Tony Stewart and Dale Jarrett swapped the third position we'll be back with more post race coverage from Dover Downs International Speedway in just a minute you're
