[Music] let's talk about sleight of hand and in particular hard slide of hand moves in techniques that you might not necessarily use on a day-to-day basis in your card magic but it is definitely fun to learn fun to practice and let's be honest fun to show off that you could do these hard moves right yo yo yo guys what is going on alex pandrea here welcome back to another magic tutorial in today's video we're talking about some hard sleight of hand techniques in particular one technique that i love to practice i never ever use it i don't think i've ever used it as a control but again it is something that if you learn harder sleight of hand it makes all the easy things that you do in performance more fluid more elegant looking i guess you could call it and i think you will perform the sleight of hand that you do in a more natural way see a lot of people might argue to say that there's no point in learning all these slides that you're never going to use oh i could just do this do that simple techniques and i'll get a reaction this is not the point of card magic or sleight of hand in general we have these moves for a reason and it's to push ourselves to push what we can do what we're capable of and if we are just okay with just learning the basic slights and performing them then you'll never become better than you are and you just won't be a good magician with everything that you need to know to be a good magician so when you look at everybody else doing the same old thing over and over think to yourself that you can do better that you can stand out and don't ever ever listen to the naysayers or the people that tell you that you have to do this one thing or don't do this or do that we are about halfway through the pre-order period for the gypsy lecture my four-hour live online lecture it's going on right now for pre-order so hit the link below alexpandria.com if you want to learn more with me things that i just can't put here on youtube things that i want to go in more detail and taking everything that i learned throughout all these years all my years of lecturing and taking the best material from those lectures the most powerful material and putting it into this one night event so get your tickets right now alexpandria.com and let's jump into this tutorial the first thing that we are going to want to learn to do is how do we get the card from the middle to swivel out in this way into the right hand and that would be step number one of getting it into this longitudinal palm i guess you could call it it is different from the tankai palm tenkai pump would be something like this but still the thumb is on it and a longitudinal palm would be the exact same thing but the card is oriented the other way okay so that is the first step of what we're going to need to do for this control so the idea is in slow motion that all right or rather in fast motion and in slow motion it's this and it's that alright and this is while the right hand has cover and you're doing it in this manner so that it doesn't look like anything is happening but behind the scenes or behind the hand that is happening all right so you're going to start with a break in the middle of the deck all right now ideally you would want to know where the card is is it above the break it is or is it below the break because there's a few ways to do this you could push up and get the card that is above the break or you can pull down and get the card that it that is underneath the break right so depending on where the card is oriented the card that you want to steal and then and then swivel around to the bottom controlling it to the bottom you're going to want to know where it is all right we're going to go over both scenarios so you know how to do each so the first scenario is what happens when the cart is underneath the brake usually that's the case right the card is being placed back and you grab your brakes just like that and then you place the deck on top and you have your nice little pinky break above the card and the card is underneath the pinky break okay so let's do it face up so you can kind of get the gist of what's going on here now what you're going to want to do is pull down on that card so that it is angle jogged to the side just like this all right now the way that we're going to do this the only thing that really you have to keep in mind is that you don't want to have too much finger fingering action with finger motion i should say um fingering motion at this point because your right hand is also in this position right here and you don't want to fumble too much at this point it should be just you're holding the deck okay that's that's the idea of it so at so what you're going to want to do is place your your pinky a little bit further inside of the break so you could create a good pressure and then start pulling everything down now notice when i do this all my my my whole hand starts to move and it kind of looks like this weird claw like action all right you want to do it so that the fingers don't move so much you don't want a harsh pull down on the card you just want to be elegant about this okay you just want to come here and pull down the card just like that make sure to keep this in line and then the pressure over here in between these two all right just like you would in a normal let's say you have a normal grip like that and then with the normal pinky break you want to keep this pressure the same throughout the whole the whole time okay so here here and just pull down a little bit don't go crazy with it all right at this point and keep in mind that your your hand is always going to be here all right to keep this hidden now what's going to happen is your your pinky because you pulled down it is on top of the card and now it's going to move underneath the card all right so it's going from on top to underneath now your third finger or your ring finger is going to put pressure on the deck and then that pinky is going to kick out like this okay so the pinky is underneath putting pressure on the selected card this finger is on the deck all right it tends to do this okay it tends to do this you want to keep it there because this is going to create that pivot point that we need for the card to start swiveling out if i push out my pinky this is what's going to happen and look if i keep pushing out without this finger nothing nothing and it's just going to be this awkward you're not going to know what to do with it from there so this finger has come here and when this finger is here that's when the swiveling happens okay now the most important thing i think for this first part of the move that you're going to want to be aware of is when you're doing this you want to make sure that the left top part of the selected card does not get caught on right here on this side all right because if that happens it's going to stop the card from swirling around all right so the way that you're going to do that is just have the card maybe if you bevel if you bevel this a little bit beveling these cards this way you could get a nice smoother swivel or just in general move the deck a little bit more to your right hand side so away from this side of the the left hand and you should be good to go all right so that's the first thing that you're going to want to practice it's here see i'm beveling it a little bit this hand is here and i'm keeping that just like that okay now what's going to happen is at this point it's basically in this longitudinal palm so if you do want to you can go ahead and steal it off just like this so it just looks like your hand comes here grabs the card for grabs the deck for just a second as you say something and then you could come away with it and steal the card out okay so here here and then steal it out as this moves down this moves up or what we are going to do is use it to move the card from here to the bottom of the deck and then swirl it back around to the bottom completing the control all right now i did say that we were going to mention how to do it from the top of the of this packet as well same exact thing you're going to do but instead of pulling down you are going to push up on the brake so you're going to push up now this in my opinion is a little bit harder because look you're going to get a few more cards that come along with it so it's a little bit i think harder in my opinion but if we're already doing this control then this shouldn't be hard for you so you're gonna again push up now another thing to keep in mind when you're pushing up is to again keep that pressure and you'll notice that when i push up this whole top packet goes up we don't want that all right so we want this is when that right hand comes in handy and it's going to put pressure on top of the deck with that first finger curled in to stop this from coming up too much all right so keep that in mind so this is here usually that would happen but i'm coming here i'm also blocking any separation that would happen in the front end over here but also keeping pressure so that doesn't come out and then boom you're here alright so that's step number one so now like i said step number two is to bring this to the bottom and then swirl it back around and i just i love practicing this slight so much it's such a good feeling when you get it down and you get it smoothly all the way around i don't use it often like i said this is something that i don't really use but it is so fun to practice and so satisfying when you get it done perfectly and seamlessly so how does that work so you're here you're here this is the position that we're in you're going to move your right hand to the side almost as if you're doing a side steal right so almost like a side steal away and back don't like this motion too much but you're gonna want to try to do it in the most minimal way possible so you're here you're moving it away just a bit and you want to do it as maybe you come up okay as you come up and re-square because you're going to want to readjust this as well you know we'll get to that in just a second but that could be used as a covering action the already necessary movement that we are going to do for this readjustment all right so we're here and as we're moving up to readjust the hands you're going to come away to the right hand side with it so this is back in the middle you're going to come away with the right hand side of it and then just let it clear and then the bottom one tip that i like to give is to keep the middle finger at all times so now we're just creating a pivot point so you don't have to come away with the hand all the way and then come back to the bottom so you're just here and you're just creating a pivot point it also might help if you bend the thumb a little bit but you don't want to bend it too much to create too much action right there at that point okay so just there and now we've moved it to the bottom now what you're going to want to do is as this is happening you want to move the deck with the right hand up to make a lot of room underneath over there all right so from here to here now underneath this is the the what's going to happen your pinky of your left hand is on the bottom holding this card so right now you can take away your hand and it's being held up by the pinky of the left hand so you start off here you end up here start off here end up here pinky is right there now what the pinky is going to do is again the same exact action it's going to swirl it the other way back on and squared up on the deck this time on the bottom of the deck but again using that third finger that ring finger as a pivot point as the pinky pulls back pulls back and you can see that happening here pulling back pulling back pulling back and now your pinky is going to go into this weird i'll show you at the end that's how your pinky is if i take the deck away this is the elegance of this move this is at the end of the move your pinky how it should be so it should be up all the way as much as possible starting from here and then kicking it all the way here all right so when we're back at this motion again coming up making sure there's a lot of room right there if i take this hand away you can see the pinky starts coming up up and up and up right and also this is the pressure point right there so you want that right the pressure point that's how it's going to turn if it if that's not there or enough pressure is there it's not going to turn and you're gonna keep going up until until it is very much squared up with the bottom of the deck and now look at my pinky if you can see that there it's way up there and this is this is hurting this side right here so this is going to hurt in the in the beginning because your pinky's not going to be used to going all the way that high uh but just work on that and then the pain will obviously go away but you need a little bit of pain for these kind of moves so don't don't waste out on me here you're here you're here also again you don't want this to flash all right so you want to just keep in mind how far the pinky is and where it starts and where it ends because if it is too far to one side all right if we're here and it is too far inwards okay inwards then what's going to happen is that that is going to get caught on the pinky uh on on the thumb all right the top left-hand corner it's gonna get caught on the thumb and you won't be able to pull it flush in alright so as long as you keep that in mind you'll understand this move better you don't want to come too far in with it you want your pinky relatively at the tip right there and then when it starts to pull in you could clear it pressure here this hand on top of it this whole time boom clear it there and then you can square up place the deck down but it should just look like the card is selected placed back as you square up you're going to kick this out move it up and then maybe re-adjust your hand place it on the table but the action should be you're just squaring up the deck at this point and you're placing it down yes so it is in theory a move that could be used no problem but i just think that it's uh it's a move that for me personally i like to practice more than i perform i like to try to get these nuances down and the harder this kind of stuff that we practice the more your fingers are going to get used to moving in weird different ways like i said the pinky and that will help with other moves okay so i hope you enjoyed that little tutorial right there i hope you practice it and come up with your own weird ways of controlling cards and i'm sure this if you didn't know it before if you didn't know this action should spark a little bit of creativity in your card magic so with these sort of slides you have to think to yourself am i going to use it and if you the answer is no to that question is it still okay for me to practice and put your time and effort into it and of course my thinking behind this what i said even in the beginning of this video is yes hundred percent because you will get used to your fingers will get used to moving in different ways that you're not used to moving those thing your fingers right and that will just make everything else that you do easier sort of more more agile and more fluid when you move from one to the other doing easy things will become easier even when you hold a break for example a lot of people that don't practice harder slides or don't have their fingers accustomed to moving in certain ways what's going to happen is you're going to start holding a break in a very claw like manner and that's never good for anybody right for yourself for the audience being like what is your finger doing in between those cards and you know you see this right so we want to try to put that to rest so doing things a little bit harder practicing these moves i think it is very important please let me know in the comments what else that you would want me to teach harder slights because i know i've concentrated a lot especially over the last year and easier things that anybody could learn and doing them the right way but i think we've all evolved together that we can start teaching a little bit here and there of more interesting more harder harder things i will definitely get into that type of tutorial as well as more thinking behind our magic theory behind everything um because i feel like i have a lot to say and there's definitely some things that i could put here on youtube and there's things that i'm i just don't want to put here on youtube so with that being said for those of you who want to join my journey further alexpandria.com is the place to go to do so so we're going to be promoting different things there on that site right now if you're watching this and this video is new to you it is my online lecture we might have different ones going forward but this one is the one where i'm taking the best and most powerful things the lecture that i've done throughout all these years and put them together for this one night event but if you're watching this further out in time and i'm not doing the lecture i'm sure there is something on that site so click the link below enjoy going further and deeper into our magic studies if you did enjoy this video hit that like button comment down below your thoughts and we will see you very shortly on the next video thank you so much and see you soon peace
