are talking about one of the coolest color changes
and one of the most popular color changes out there, and
what better setting to teach a color change than with the changing of the leaves in fall, ah? See, I thought color changing
leaves, color change. Let's get into it. (dramatic music) Yo, yo, yo guys, what is
goin' on, Alex Pendrea here. Welcome back to my channel
and welcome back to the fall. Autumn is my favorite,
favorite season of all time. Now before we get into the tutorial, I wanna tell you a little
bit about my next event. On October 10th, we celebrate. It's my birthday. And every year for my birthday, we do something special on my websites. This year we are celebrating a few things. First and foremost, we have a
new deck of cards coming out. Now I've been printing decks since 2011, so for quite a few years,
and finally we have reached the 100th different
deck that we've printed and released out into the public. For a lot of you following this channel, you might know my work
from only a few years back, but before then I printed
a lot of different decks, more than just NOCs, so
I'll leave a list below if you are interested. The second thing is that we have a Halloween deck for you guys. Now some of you may or may
not know that on my birthday, I always do a special
deck, that the proceeds from that deck go to a different charity. Two years ago we donated
to Breast Cancer Awareness. Last year with the Fear deck, we donated to the Make a Wish
Foundation, and this year, we have a new charity
with the new Fear deck coming out on October 10th. And the last thing we are
celebrating is my birthday, no other explanation needed there. So stay tuned for that, let's get into the color change right now. Okay, for this tutorial,
we're gonna use a Summer NOC Orange Edition, which
makes a good fall deck too, by the way, so it doesn't
just have to be summer NOC. A little tip for you there. Okay, so how does this color change look? Well you have a card just like that and then you change it to the Jack. It's a very nice and basic change. Now when you think about color changes, this is the sort of basic
change that you wanna do. It's a step up, I think, from
the Erdnase color change, which I don't like, I don't even do well. But this is the basic one
that everybody should know. Now this is gonna be broken up into three different sections. The first section's
gonna be the get ready, how we get ready into
doing the color change. The second is the actual
move of the color change and the fingering positioning. And the third is the cleanup. So there's a few ways to do each, and then you can combine them as you wish. Now the first option
to do this color change is to do it straight off
of the face of the deck. So it would look like this. You would have the three, and then it would change to the eight. The only problem with
this is that you have to, after the cleanup, you have
one card that is face up on top of the deck,
which is not that great. But you don't have to do
a double to begin with. The second way to do it is
to start with a double lift off the top of the deck,
and then do the move. And what's great about that
is that you're gonna get the cleanup to be cleaned up
right at the bottom of the deck and now you're left clean. So that's gonna be up to you on which move that you wanna do to get
ready for the color change. So what is happening behind
the scenes of this change? Well, it's very, very simple. Basically, you have a double
or one card hiding another card and you're going to use
the pinky of the left hand, or the hand that the deck is in. If you're right-handed,
you usually hold the deck in your left hand,
you're gonna use a pinky to pull down just like
that, and get this card to basically, come off
the deck to the side, which is gonna be hidden
by the right hand. And then this is going to be shown. Hey look, a doggie. So I like to do the
double because I just like the cleanup a little bit better, instead of having to clean up afterwards. So, double lift, show
the card, the X card. And then we'll get into
a little quick routine afterwards of how to use it. And you're gonna hold the deck. A lot of people have trouble
doing this next part, the actual move of it
because, what's gonna happen is when you pull down,
if you have the deck in the hand too deep, you're
not gonna have enough room for this to happen, for
the card to lever down and then shoot around to
the back side, all right? And that's because you're
not lifting the deck further up into the hand. Now it's almost like you're
doing a top shot, all right? If you know the top shot,
you're holding between the thumb and the first finger like
this, high in the hand, so you could have room
to actually do the move. But for here, it's gonna be
used so that we have room for this card to come around
and then to the bottom. So higher into the hand,
holding between the thumb and the first finger, and
I would practice this first and making sure that it's here. Because you don't want more
than one card to come off. And that happens if you're not holding tight enough on this part. And sometimes it's gonna happen
where you see that happen, especially if there's a bow, a natural bow inside of the deck, okay? So you're turning the card over, boom. Now you're going to move it a
little bit up into the hand, so I just use both hands
to come up here and do it. And now my pinky is gonna be ready to go. Now the pinky is going to pull down. Remember, you have gripped with the thumb and the first finger here, tight grip. Pinky is gonna start to pull down and it's gonna pull down
in a diagonal fashion, and keep pulling down until it
gets to almost this position. Now you don't want it perpendicular. You want it in this position
'cause that's gonna help with the angle when your
right hand is covering it. So remember, pinky here. You're going to pull instead
of that way, out to the right, you're gonna pull towards the diagonal, towards, imagine there was
an imaginary line here. You're gonna pull towards
that way with the pinky. And you're in this position like that. The right hand also has a role in this, because the right hand is
going to either cover here to make the change, or it's
going to flick like that. So, flick the corner, all right? That's how I first saw
it, actually, like this. So there's a few ways to do it. It's whatever you're comfortable with. Whatever works best for you. For me, it's to do this,
and then do the change. Now what's great about this
position is that once you've flicked and opened up your
hand, your hand naturally covers this part, but it also
could naturally now, just grab the deck in your right hand. So now the deck is gripped
in your right hand. And that's gonna help with the cleanup. Here, and you wait until your hand covers that your pinky comes in, boom. Pinky comes in, do the
change, grab the deck and now, from behind, you could see that the left fingers are going to pull and move the card to
the bottom of the deck. Now this is the cleanup of
it, but it has one problem. Look at it from the side. You do the move, you
come here, you clean up and now you're just holding the deck, but your fingers are moving from behind. So one way to cover this action is to rotate the deck like that. So, here we'll do it again. Watch the King change into the seven and now I'm rotating the deck,
end for end in 180 degrees to cover the action of
the change of the cleanup. Boom, grab the deck, come here, pull down. You're pulling, as you get to here, you're gonna rotate
clockwise, grab the deck and come back here for
the cover of the change. But it's gonna be up to
you, here it is again. Here, here, maybe do a riffle to cover it. Whatever the action is, as long as these fingers don't move too much. Another nice way to do the
cleanup is to do a double. Watch the 10. You make a change, and then
you show the Queen like that. And the card has changed. And the way that we're
gonna do this is as follows. Same exact move, boom, or whichever way you wanna do it, boom. And now from here,
because your hand is here, instead of picking up
the deck and grabbing it, all we're going to do is we're going to spread the deck out this way, okay? And you're spreading
the deck out this way. And this helps the fingers
underneath grab the card and pull it flush as you square back up. So, you're here, you do
the move, you grab the deck and then you spread, thumb is
still here grabbing onto it, and that also covers this card. So that card is covered. And now, you can come here
and square everything up, and that's a nice cleanup
for it as well, okay? So double, show, do the move, square, this is hidden, and
then you square back up, and then you show the one card. All right, a cool little effect to do with this color change is as follows. You have a card selected, let's say it's the Queen of diamonds, and you lose it somewhere inside the middle of the pack. You ask the spectator to hold
out their hand and you say, look, we'll use the top
card, King of spades. That wasn't your card, was it? And they say "No because I
put my card in the center." Say oh yeah, that's right. We'll use the King of spades and we'll leave it on the table. Now they put their hand on top of it, or in between their hands,
or something to the extent that you can't get onto it. You say, look, we'll try to fix it. I'll use the second card
as well, four of spades. That wasn't it either, right? All right, we'll try to fix it. Watch the four, now if it wasn't that card and it wasn't this card,
but if I just give this a little snap, watch the
four turn into the King. Now the King was in your
hand, but now it's here. And they lift their hand
and they turn it around with tears in their
eyes, that now the card in their hand is their
selected card, the Queen. A rather simple effect,
basically it's just a control and a few double lifts mixed
in with a color change. You have a card controlled up to the top. Do whatever control that you wanna do. Make sure that they think it's lost. When you do a double lift over here, you show that that's not their card. You ask 'em to hold out their hand. They do so, or on the
table, but I like to do it in between their hands, like this. I think it makes of a nice
sort of moment at the end because it was in their
hand the whole time. Turn this over and you're
really placing their card in between their hands, okay? Now you're set up to
do another double lift. And all you have to do now is just do the exact Cardini change,
boom, that we talked about. The patter is as follows. So it wasn't that card
and it wasn't this card. I'm gonna try to take that
card out of your hand first. Then do the change, one, two, boom. Do the change. Do whatever cleanup suits you. Show that now the King
that was in their hand is now in your hand and
you say, well if this was in your hand, what could be in your hand? And you guys get the rest,
they lift up their hand, they turn it over and
it's a very, very nice added bonus effect with the color change. rather than just doing a double lift, putting in their hand,
snapping your fingers and then turning it over, okay? Because here's the thing that I used to do when I was just starting
off with card magic and I learned the double lift. I would take the card,
place it in their hands, they would do this and I would go, okay, magic, and boom, right? But there was no second
sort of a buildup to it, so this adds a little bonus to it. It adds another color change. They get the color change
as the first wow moment, and then the second one, it's boom boom, and you have a very nice effect with that. So play around with that
