[Music] that was great sweetie now smile smile and now our next contestant in the school talent show this is Ruby I wasn't born a good singer actually I was pretty bad at a lot of stuff I tried growing up sucker hockey softball you name it the same thing applied to singing to not having control over my body meant not having control over my voice however with time in practice I got better I became alright that soccer give up on hockey and I started bringing a tennis racket to softball and no one ever stopped me from using it so that counts my singing has also gotten a lot better over time so let's have a look at my progress shall we 2003 this year I was a sad boy my first ever long-term girlfriend Amanda dumped me breaking my 15 year old heart I felt like no one in the world had it worse than me however my tragedy got me inspired to record music here's the earliest recording I have of me singing I look at you you lie down next to me [Music] at this point I was 0% a singing boy and 100% a drummy boy I have been playing drums casually since I was 5 years old but I had terrible stage fright and I would sometimes get panic attacks from playing in front of people becoming a singer with all it entails including having lots of people looking at me what's not inviting to me at all the main reason I eventually became a singer anyway was that I didn't want to compromise with what the songs I wrote would sound like also I didn't like when I ended up doing most of the work like writing a song recording and producing it just have people listening just care about the singer anyway hey you like the song I made that I wrote it and everything he's just singing does anyone care 2004 at this point like many teenagers I was really insecure I cared more about everyone else's opinions than about what I thought myself for example at one point I bought a stylish button-down denim shirt and I wore to school the first day I wore it some popular girls from the year above me came up to me oh hey what's your name it's a roomie nice to meet you Rami we just wanted to say that that shirt looks really great on you so naturally I decided to wear that same shirt every day to school for two weeks I didn't even wash it so towards the end it started smelling really bad that all made sense for me at the time because I knew cool people like the shirt oh gosh Rami freaking stinks similarly a band at my school had a singer with a voice that a lot of people around me really liked so what did insecure Rui do you ask well I tried to sound exactly like him here's a clip of him singing [Music] [Applause] and here's the clip of me trying and totally failing at sounding the same she was before No watch have she doesn't seem to care embarassing 2005 have you ever seen this guy in 2005 he was the face of the biggest social media sites in the world Google Plus haha just kidding it was MySpace a good joke after classes were over me and my friend email used to spend hours adding new friends on myspace because for some reason everyone thought that that was how he built an audience back then basically social media was so new no one knew what they were doing my friend jazz' and Dave even told me that at this point they both paid money for a program that sent out friend requests automatically every day anyway this one girl from England which by the way is my city actually became a fan of our music after we added her we were super excited about our first fan from abroad and we saw that she had a song by the band McFly on her profile I started listening to that band a lot because I liked the voice of one of the singers Dani it was pretty low in raspy I tried to keep that I listened to them a secret though because technically they were a boy band aimed at young girls hey guys I'm a cool boy I definitely don't listen to boy bands so in this singing clip I start out by trying to sound like previously and then in the chorus I do my best to try to sound like the McFly singer [Music] [Music] 2006 through 2007 when high school was over I had but one goal to become the best drummer in the world seriously like my main goal in life was to try to become the best at something that clearly cannot be measured what kind of it will make it their life goal to do that to achieve this impossible dream I moved to a music conservatory and gave up on pretty much everything else socialising nah taking care of my health nah practising or recording singing drumming 8 to 14 hours per day ye'd it's a great age looking back this period in my life was extremely unhealthy and not even effective practice wise I got worn out pretty early on but kept going anyway because I was so motivated to do it I could easily have had a healthier and more enjoyable life while improving my drumming faster if I would have just chilled but distress and bad feelings we're what kept me feeling like I was working hard 2008 did you end up becoming the very best drummer like no one ever wash yeah no my extreme practice schedule led to a big sad face situation suddenly whenever I sat down behind a drum kit my back would start cramping and hurting I had to stop drumming overnight and do boring rehab exercises one of them was really embarrassing I had to lie on the floor and clench my butt cheeks for about 20 minutes a day it did give me an amazing butt so uh i'ma call that it wins is what I have been dedicating my life to was suddenly gone I shifted my focus to something completely different see political science it wasn't random that I decided to do political science I've always been interested in trying to solve global in Justices like a people born in many countries in Africa or the Middle East will by defaults have a tougher life than people born in the US or Scandinavia Oh anyway I did some singing and songwriting on the side and this clip is the first time I remember ever trying distortion and it hurt my throat a lot back then [Music] but the [Applause] [Music] kiss me 20 turn eventually though my attitude towards political science started changing oh hey what did you do this weekend I watched eight political documentaries and went to youth club meeting for the political party I'm pardon how about you I sang wow what waste of time are you even taking your education seriously when are you ever gonna be able to use singing for your career yeah I know right hey can you stand over there for a second at this point I realized that this wasn't as deeply interested in the details of politics as the other people at university like that guy if I was going to compete to get any kind of job I realized I wanted it to be in music so I got a bit more serious about getting some music done and recorded a couple songs that I uploaded to YouTube here's one of them called falling in love and you can hear that I had been listening to singers like Patrick Stump and Brendon Urie and I was really straining to try to get that meaty type of voice [Music] when I look in your [Music] you and holy moly that song got hundreds of millions of place in a matter of days and I even won a Grammy for song of the year a Swedish king invited me to a game of his school casting and OH in reality all the songs that had been working so hard on had under fifty views each weeks after I uploaded them even though I posted them all over my private Facebook multiple times and annoyed all my friends and this was back in the time when most people actually used Facebook [Music] but a couple weeks later I saw a viral music video on the YouTube front page and I decided to make a cover of it to try to promote my music the song was called the Bed Intruder song and the creator's were the Gregory Brothers they ended up linking to my cover from their viral video and I got like 20,000 subscribers overnight this may be incredibly motivated and happy I remember sitting in class and just refreshing my email over and over since I would get a new email every time someone subscribed so roomy what's the most effective way to use microloans in a I don't care just look at these subs mister system look at a look okay class everyone took the rest of the day off Rumi is getting hella such [Music] 2011 I ended up leaving school showing you mom and dad and putting all my effort into building a YouTube career by the way I wasn't earning any money because I wasn't part of the YouTube monetization program yet my mom was pushing for me to go back to school which I now realized was a natural thing for her to do but I was super offended mom why don't you believe in me look at all these subscribers that don't learn me any money this is a real job so Rumi how could you afford to spend a whole year doing something that didn't earn you money were you born rich no actually the music conservatory people were able to sign me up for an advanced course where I could choose to focus and I chose music on YouTube so I got that sweet sweet student loan money which actually isn't a lot of money at all but I like pasta so I did okay 2012 this year I was accepted to fancy-schmancy songwriting school out in the middle of nowhere in Sweden during winter time it would sometimes get colder than minus 30 degrees Celsius that's minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit so it was pretty common to take a taxi from where we lived to the school just to avoid the cold that was where I met my editor / BFF forever Jonas who does most of the animation in my videos [Music] work faster the school was all about writing pop music and most of the assignments were real song requests for famous singers I was practicing a lot of singing and I was very inspired by singers like Adam Levine in maroon 5 which you can clearly hear in this demo maybe even a bit too much [Music] Wow [Music] 2014 I graduated songwriting school heck yeah I could finally support myself doing YouTube full-time yeah and without school I had a lot more time to write original music in just a bunch of different genres and I released it all on YouTube [Music] we are [Music] we go [Music] yes [Music] people in the comments of my videos would like it when I did scream he distorted singing so I did my best to do that as much as possible but my screaming technique wasn't the best and I would get tired and hurt my throat after recording this song I could barely speak for two days [Music] the next few years are pretty well documented here on YouTube but here's a quick rundown 2015 I moved to London to meet more english-speaking youtubers and to be with my girlfriend at the time we had been in a long-distance relationship for over a year and this was a song that I wrote for her before I moved days turn into weeks turn into month turn into God no sound [Music] [Applause] 20:16 living in an english-speaking country led me to have a better understanding of the English language and better pronunciation [Music] - wants to piss [Music] 20:17 this year the YouTube channel grew a lot and I started making a bunch of different kinds of videos like my singing experiment series where I tried singing like a girl singing backwards computer-generated singing singing underwater and so on but those videos were very high effort and needed a lot of research planning and writing I ended up not having time to work on my singing at all and I think that I actually became a worse singer because of it early on in 2018 I had some changes happen in my personal life that made me want to reevaluate what I wanted to do and how I wanted to work I tried making some lower effort videos to be able to sustain a more balanced life but I didn't enjoy making them so recently I've been making more ambitious videos that I care more about but also taking care of my voice and writing music which just led to my upload schedule to be a bit slower so after working a lot of my singing this year and changing my style a bit this is me trying my best [Music] just kidding okay let's do it this is what you said [Music] [Music] miss Lee [Music] number so yeah my singing journey to where I am now hasn't been straight or even made a lot of sense most of the time if there's anything I want you to walk away with after watching this video though is that you don't need a lot of initial talents in order to become good at what you're interested in doing I'm a slow learner who put my focus on very different things than singing for a long time but overall I kept at it and didn't give up and now singing and making videos is my job so if you have the opportunity to pursue something you're passionate about don't let old misconceptions about talent or people around you being more naturally talented to keep you from doing it so feel encouraged to try things and encourage your friends and I will see you next time bye oh hey guys it's been a while thanks for watching the video I got another animated video right over here if you haven't seen that one me and my friend Dave were just in a video on PewDiePie's channel where we went through a subreddit it was pretty cool check that out over here and I will see you guys next time if you don't see me first
