what's going on guys billy here and dji has just upgraded their mavic mini line of drones with the release of the brand new mini 2. now i'm sure a lot of you watching this video that own the original mavic mini are probably wondering if you should make the upgrade to this new drone or if you should just stick with the drone that you currently have and let me just say that over the past couple of weeks getting used to flying the mini 2 it's really opened my eyes after flying the mini 1 specifically for this video after the fact that there is a huge gap in between these drones the experience that you get in the mini 2 far exceeds what you get with the original mini despite these drones basically looking identical now if i showed you guys both of these drones side by side at a quick glance you might mistake one for the other the design itself is basically the same with some very small changes some that are simply cosmetic to distinguish the new mini 2 from the old mini 1 and some that actually make a pretty considerable difference in how the drone functions to point out those changes we'll start with the led on the front which is customizable right within the fly app this is a fun way to customize your drone on the fly and could be a good way to distinguish which drone is yours in the air if you're flying with some friends and you've all got the same drone the micro usb port on the back of the drone has been changed to a usb-c port which is a much welcome change to match the new remote now while it might not be a change made directly to the drone itself it does come shipped with a rubber propeller guard which is a huge lifesaver especially with these props on this drone that seem to flop around all the time although it might not look it at first glance these motors also have been upgraded and do look slightly different giving us all around upgraded performance because of that change the ends of the back legs look slightly different with the exposed screws being covered by a soft touch rubber piece the final notable change is the propellers which still annoyingly attach by a separate screw for each propeller but this go around they've been made to be more rigid and are just ever so slightly longer than those that came with the first mavic mini on this topic of design the remote controller is a total overhaul but isn't anything that we haven't seen before as this is the remote first introduced with the mavic air 2. this change is a toss-up because while i much prefer the design of this new remote a lot of people would prefer the older design that came with that original mavic mini because it folds up to be a whole lot smaller and therefore easier to travel with while i can understand this logic the newer remote introduces a larger battery that lasts you dozens and dozens of flights a custom function button which the original mavic mini remote didn't have at all a flight mode switch and a shooting mode button which that old remote also didn't have the usb-c port which makes charging a whole lot more convenient and finally an overall better ergonomic design with a much better build quality with this remote our phone screen is raised up from where our hands used to sit and overall gives us more room to grip the device that top piece that sits above your phone is the integrated antenna and we've also got rubberized grips on the back which make the remote feel overall more premium so i know that we spent a very considerable amount of time dissecting the design differences between both of these drones when in reality there's probably only three that really are important to me the first of which are the upgraded motors the second of which are those new propellers which aren't seen as a direct upgrade but they do improve the overall flight performance of this drone and the third is this brand new remote controller now while it's not totally brand new it is new to the mini line of drones and yeah that's about it those are all of the big upgrades that we got in terms of hardware a very limited list but luckily a lot of the changes that we're going to see in the mini 2 come inside of this drone we've got upgraded specs across the board as a whole slew of brand new features so i figured a great way to summarize everything that's been upgraded in the mini 2 was to make a list and then to discuss them further in groups of camera and then flight performance now this drone is 449 so it's an extra 50 than what the original mavic mini sold for but i find that extra cost is justified by just how much more this drone does it feels more complete than the original mavic mini which brings me to an early answer of yes the mini 2 is absolutely worth the upgrade but let me tell you why let me cover each of these categories more in depth to help you understand why all of these upgrades are so important the camera is no doubt an important area that dji decided to upgrade this go around with the mini 2 but they didn't change any of the hardware both of these drones the mini one and the mini 2 have the same sensor they've got the same aperture they've got the same lens they've got the same exact camera and gimbal assembly the only difference is dji decided to remove some of these software limitations imposed on the original mavic mini do you guys think that the original mavic mini really wasn't capable of shooting 4k video and it wasn't capable of shooting raw photos no those were just limitations put into place by dji on the mini one so that when they came out with the mini 2 they'd have these big specs that improved upon the mini one when in reality it probably could have done it all along just looking at the camera and gimbal assembly confirms this assumption because everything is exactly the same except for the new 4k graphic that highlights the new shooting specs which of course is the only thing that separates these cameras granted these updates though really make the mini 2 feel like a more complete drone as it delivers specs that you'd come to expect from most cameras worth shooting with in the year 2020. i'd say that my two favorite updates are the raw photo shooting mode and the upgraded bitrate of 100 megabits per second don't get me wrong i'm really happy that the videos taken with the mini 2 will look sharper in a higher 4k resolution but the bitrate more than doubling is what will make a difference in overall video fidelity there's so much more information that's captured and it's seen firsthand from the larger file sizes but i don't look at the larger file sizes as a bad thing i'm happy that this bit rate is higher and the max resolution is higher so that i have more flexibility when editing the video to speak on these comparison clips for a second i have to say that i didn't notice much of a difference between the two right out of the camera any small difference is negligible like a shift in white balance and exposure because obviously things aren't going to look perfect from clip to clip that's why editing and color grading these videos are really important the same can be said about photos in fact these images right out of the camera look almost completely identical with the same margin of error that i touched on regarding the slight shift in exposure white balance and framing when trying to shoot the same exact photo with two different drones and quite frankly what more could you expect there wasn't a megapixel increase there wasn't a center change it is the exact identical camera that came in that first mini one the real change when shooting photos though it doesn't come in that actual shooting process it comes in the post production process as the raw shooting capability of the mini 2 will give you so much more flexibility to change the white balance the exposure and the colors of these uncompressed images just like with video more information is being stored for an overall better final image now i should mention that dji added two brand new shooting modes when you're taking photos with the mini 2 one of which is auto exposure bracketing thank you dji for adding that i use that all the time on all of my drones and the other one is panorama right of course panoramas are a ton of fun to shoot with drones all the way up in the sky but i noticed something interesting they have completely nerfed the panorama shooting mode now it does save the jpeg images for you so you can go ahead and stitch that in post if you wanted to like in photoshop or something like that and create your own panorama rather than use the one that dji stitched for you but they limit the resolution of these images to 2000 by 1500 they cut the resolution in half i don't understand why they do this but it has clearly nerfed the panorama shooting mode you're not going to get as much clarity and resolution in these images as you would if they were in that full 4 000 by 3000 resolution now if you weren't able to get a good understanding of how these two cameras stack up against each other here by me flashing photos and videos at you rapidly through youtube's compression i don't blame you so i'm gonna include a download link in the description so you can take these files from the mini 1 and the mini 2 for yourself edit them manipulate them play around them and see exactly how they compare on your nice monitor or your phone screen at home again away from youtube's compression also if you want to take a deeper dive on both of these cameras i've made four separate videos covering how each of these drones fare shooting videos and shooting photos i also provide even more example images in those videos so you can take a deeper dive into the world of editing both the photos and videos and with that this now brings us into our final category and that is flight performance and this is where the mini 2 saw most of the upgrades over that original mini one i would say that dji did everything they could to make this drone fly better in every single notable category like if someone was flying the mini 2 and i didn't know which drone they were flying and they ran over to me and they handed me the remote control and they said here fly this drone and started flying it around i think it was a high-end premium drone and if i brought that thing down to me and saw it was this small 249 gram drone i don't think i would believe them because this drone flies so great and it wasn't until i flew the mini 2 that i realized all the imperfections that the original mini one had this drone flies so solid the performance is just off the charts and it's something that i've almost become addicted to because this drone flies with the best of them it flies just as good as the mavic air 2 and the mavic 2 pro with some stipulations but this is just a testament to how good dji's flight software is each brand new release is really improving how well their drone flies now i don't want to take anything away from that original mavic mini because it was super impressive what dj was able to fit inside of such a small lightweight shell but in typical dji fashion of course they upped the game with improvements in every single spec that makes up this sheet a five mile an hour increase in the top speed and an improved wind resistance rating scale thanks to those upgraded motors a longer advertised flight time by only a minute and absolutely jaw dropping range for a drone of this size at 6.21 miles or 10 kilometers and the ocusync 2 transmission system which cuts through interference so much better than the enhanced wi-fi transmission system that was in the original mavic mini there's something that just can't be conveyed on paper in the spec sheet but it is kind of an accumulation of all of those specs coming together and it's how this drone feels when you fly it how does the drone respond to your input how does the drone feel when you're flying it around how is the latency between the remote controller and the drone itself these are all things that really factor in the total experience that you get when you're flying the drone and i tried to kind of touch on this before i touched on the spec sheet list right i went over how this drone has improved flight software how it feels like a much more premium drone how it can hang with some of the other more expensive drones that dji sells and how it overall feels great to fly and all of that again is an accumulation of this great spec sheet that dji has given us and i think a great way to kind of sum up how this drone flies and how it does in terms of performance is its confidence building it's like when i take off with this drone i don't fear i'm not going to get it back because the wind is too high and i don't fear that it's going to go too far and the drone is just going to totally disconnect and drop out and fly away from me but instead i feel confident when i'm flying this drone that's something that is really important in a beginner drone you want to build confidence and a first-time flyer and that's what the mini 2 does now i know that this is a weird place to slot this in at the end of the video but i figured it would fit in the performance category so i wanted to share with you how the new mini 2's props sound in comparison to the first mavic mini because it sounds just a little bit more quiet [Music] all right so guys that about wraps up this comparison between the original mavic mini and the brand new mini 2 and i took some time to walk away and think a little bit more about what i wanted to say towards the end of this video and it's kind of got me thinking right like if you've got the original mavic mini should you upgrade should you upgrade to the brand new mini 2 right and yeah it's an upgrade but if you wanted an actual upgrade over the mavic mini why wouldn't you just go with the mavic air 2. now look i understand if you're hooked on the mini platform if you like the smaller drone if you want a quick comparison that's what we've got in terms of size uh if you like the smaller drone i understand i think that the mini 2 is going to be a great upgrade but like if you've got the mini one and you've been flying it for about a year and you want something more why if you've got the cash wouldn't you splurge on a drone that is just a little bit more expensive than what the mavic mini 2 costs but you're going to get a whole lot more of a drone for that cost i don't know that's just something i figured i'd throw out there for you guys looking to upgrade i am going to have some more thoughts on my comparison between the mini 2 and the mavic air 2 and a later video coming out in a couple of days from now so hopefully you guys stick around for that be sure to subscribe and do all that good stuff and of course i've got a ton of videos coming out on the mini 2. i've got a playlist down in the description if you guys want to kind of go through and cycle uh the topics that i've been covering but yeah guys that wraps up this comparison hope you guys enjoyed the video and as always i'll talk to you later peace [Music]
