purified in intention and motivation so that with sincere hearts they can glorify your name in their imitation initiation into the paschal mysteries of your son our lord jesus christ who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever amen a reading from the book of dear trunami moses said to the people the priests shall take the pena from your hand and laid before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering airman he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] here with [Music] in my distress [Music] is [Music] in my distress [Music] he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and aborts in the shed of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold [Music] me [Music] my distress [Music] you dwell for you as he commanded his angels to keep you in all save him in distress and give him glory [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many us for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] is jesus christ [Music] together man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god [Music] [Music] jesus christ the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to the height the devil showed him in the moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it had been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here what scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you heard your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of thanking him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ the account of the temptation in the desert is one that we are extremely familiar with after all year in year out this is stress especially during the time of land and here we find two prevailing themes the first just mentioned very briefly is on fasting jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and was hungry of course we know from from our own experiences we are fasting we are hungry we are thirsty we will also affect our mood we'll be cranky we'll be moody you know people say something worse we may step back at them no this is a very human condition so you can imagine how jesus felt at the end of the 40 days we have to remember that he is also human he is divine true but here he is in his human form so he experiences all that we have experienced and here comes the devil you know come in tempting and these three temptations is also common to our human condition even until now you can see food power authority and self-preservation or at least testing god in that sense now food we all need food we cannot deny that you know we need food to survive but when our eyes become too hungry more hungry than our mouth or our stomach then that is the problem because very often when we are hungry our eyes feast delightly on everything that's available and we just take take take take take but we know we can't finish and then you know that length itself the resting of gluttony and we need to be aware of that kind of temptation like i said food is necessary but overeating is also harmful to us some of us may eat to live but some people live to eat so we have to make that distinction power and authority is something which is necessary to maintain order in society in a country even in church without any authority if everybody do what they want then everything will be in in in chaos but if you abuse the authority and power that is given to you then there will be a problem you can think of all those leaders in the world who abuse their power and you know unleash all kinds of evil upon the people they are supposed to protect and so this is something that all of us who are in authority need to be aware of wherever we are and the third one is of course in attend testing god some of us will say that no i don't do that but if we look deep enough there there'll be certain moments in our time where we we will somewhat tell god you know if you are really god you do this for me if you are god you do this for me if this happens i will believe that you are god you in sense we are all testing god all the time and this is something which jesus teaches us not to do but to rely on god alone if you look at the first and second reading the prevailing theme would be if you call upon god he will save you he will save us but not in the way that we think because we expect to see maybe a burning bush or a lightning fire thunder hill stomach or miracle but miracles take place in different forms and sometimes we may not recognize these miracles happening in our life and so this journey into the desert this invitation by jesus being led by the holy spirit into the desert of land helped us to purify our intention purify our hearts purify the eyes of our minds and our hearts that we will be able to see more clearly our dependent on god because the more we depend on ourselves the more we were likely to stray the three temptations listed in the gospel is all about me me i me and myself which is something that society always advocates but it is not always about me it's about others it is about serving others helping others guiding others and this is also why today we are the right of election for our dear catechumens who have made the decision to take the next step to prepare themselves to be baptized and all the facilitators of the rcia have dedicated their life to bringing people to god and this is what we are all called to do whatever stage we are in life whoever we are whatever we do we bring people to christ through our journey through our own journey through our own desert we are purified of our motives and intentions and through this experience of fasting of armed giving of prayer we can grow closer and closer to god to be purified of our bad habits and grow in virtue so that year after year we will gain more and more virtue and hopefully grow more and more to be like christ let us stand to profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the power holy spirit he was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen we shall now have the presentation of the catechumens dear reverend father philip i now who is lord forever and ever amen lord god you created the human race and are the author of his renewal bless all your adopted children and these chosen ones to the harvest of your new covenant as true children of the promise may they rejoice in eternal life one not by the power of nature but through the mystery of your grace we ask this through christ our lord amen the celebrant will now address the elect so my dear elect you have set out with us on the road that leads to the glory of easter christ will be your way your truth and your life until we meet again for the scrutiny walk always in his peace the elects may now return to their seats please be seated the mass continues with the liturgy of the eucharist [Music] [Applause] [Music] so so [Music] pray brothers and sisters and my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church give us the right disposition oh lord we pray to make these offerings for which for with them we celebrate the beginning of this vulnerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 days 40 long days from earthly food he contemplated through his fast the pattern of our lantern observance and by over overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the level of malice so that celebrating worldly the parkour mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal particle feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without and we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created right they give you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never see together a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us with yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all
