Mark Waid and the Adventures of King Baby

yeah so we went to a dystopian future that was eight years from the day Trump was elected and there was a character called King baby who everyone was supposed to think was an analogue to Trump but everyone who read it realized he was an analogue to Mark Waid and from insiders are telling me that that's what Mark is referred to in Marvel offices now King baby king baby has had a long career in comics spending over 30 solid years in the industry he entered the comics scene sometime in the mid 80s with his work as editor slash writer for the amazing heroes fan magazine published by a Fantagraphics books he was later hired on as an editor for DC and eventually landed at Marvel where his run on daredevil earned him several Eisner Awards he's probably best known for works such as Kingdom Come Superman birthright and ironically irredeemable now here's the stuff they won't tell you on Wikipedia despite Wade's considerable successes in comics and expending a lot of energy trying to convince you that he is nice man with happy feelings all the time he's developed a bit of a reputation for example on March 31st 2017 leading cools Jude terror published an article centering around an interview with David Gabriel who is the vice president of sales from Marvel Comics now those of you who've just read the comics and/or had the misfortune of interacting with the freak circus that is the Marvel Comics pros community you think the whole interview would be Gabriel complaining about bigotry and how that Marvel fanbase somehow went from loving x-men to loving mine Kampf but it isn't Gabriel gave a reasonable assessment of the company and now this next part may shock you he reveals plans for Marvel to move away from their diversity push and his reasoning well one because he saw that people were turning their noses at their diversity line more specifically it was concerned that all their new talent was stuck working on books that and here's the second major concern nobody wanted to buy Gabriel infers that they only launched the diversity line in the first place because it's sold but diversity isn't selling anymore so they're making plans to cancel it basically reinforcing what most of us already knew people don't pay for diversity they pay for good stories it was overall a professional interview but the core of the story probably has nothing to do with Jude terrors talk with David Gabriel but with the comments he made right after to quote of course an argument can be made that the blame lies not with the reader but with the publishers and the entire flawed direct market system for failing to be able to market books properly to anyone but the existing comics readership now q Mark Waid Jude terror daring to place blame on the publisher rather than the reader apparently triggered Wade so badly at two days later he tweeted this and in case you're too lazy to read it let me read it for you it is a David Gabriel's enormous credit that he somehow chooses every day not to put his fist through Terra's smug face Wade launched a beautiful hate campaign the tweet got such a strong positive response that terror was prompted to publish his reply in a follow-up article there he notes that Wade's tweet got a lot of positive attention including a big thumbs-up from Marvel's geordan white and CBR founder Jonah Weyland tom reward also chimed in but as tara mentions it might have been just to virtue signal himself away from mark Wade's mighty fits of fury eventually people called Wade out for his support for arbitrary physical violence he quickly took offense that people could somehow come to that conclusion and then decided to quit Twitter because if there's one thing we've learned from pretty much every crime drama ever made running and hiding from your actions is what innocent people do but maybe it was a one-time thing after all we all say stupid things on the Internet well let's rewind time a little for our next example in July of 2015 a bit of controversy was sparked amongst the comic creator community at the Montreal ComicCon centering around another creator by the name of Arthur's item the incident is best summarized by the tweet that sparked the controversy in the first place just before noon Marvel's Jim xub tweeted this alluding to Marvel Zombies artist Arthur sytem who apparently took up so much space on the floor and it caused other artists to be moved around making it difficult for fans to find them passive-aggressive pettiness ensued including other creators claiming that sytem had photoshopped pictures to make his lines look bigger and this is where our hero Mark Waid valiantly enters the scene Wade started out tweeting that he'd love to move Arthur's item by force just an offhanded joke right well then he tweeted how obsessed he was with the idea longing for the encounter and then things start to get weird Wade placed himself as the official Arthur sytem watchdog saying he'll be watching the guy next time they're at the same show now stalking someone is creepy enough but it gets worse next Wade went to work contacting every venue he was scheduled to attend warning them that Arthur sytem better not rent out too many tables again our Wade would make it quote loud and ugly but Wade wasn't done just yet he then tried to put together a list of cons item was attending evidently to keep the guy from renting too many tables even without Wade's watchful eye tables are serious business you know dreaming about violently confronting a guy and trying to sabotage his career over gratuitous table rental is perfectly normal behavior right and that brings us to mark Way's latest shenanigan I've already done a video on this little bout of white knight rage courtesy of Wade but basically mark Wade once again rallied the troops this time to intimidate a small mom-and-pop publishing company into dropping jawbreakers lost souls an independent comic promising adventure instead of preachy politics because the writer Richard Mayer aka diversity in comics dared to critique the poor innocent Marvel comic creators and doesn't something look familiar here didn't we see similar behavior from Wade when Jude terra's suggested that maybe Marvel might be to blame for dropping sales and not the readers during the jawbreakers controversy Wade also personally made a call to Antarctic press the company who promised to publish draw breakers then soon after the comic was dropped hmm where have we seen that before doesn't it sound like when Wade personally decided to inform every venue Arthur site and plan to attend including the ones where Wade wasn't even going to show up at they'd better safeguard those precious tables in his absence or he'd make a scene and remember when Wade quit Twitter after totally not making threats toward Jude terror well Wade once again quit Twitter after totally not bullying Antarctic press into dropping jawbreakers because again nuking all of one's social media accounts and purging all evidence of potential wrongdoing is totally what innocent people do now some people might find themselves disturbed by this oddly obsessive behavior and that's even without me mentioning ways double life as a violent phone ninja but you shouldn't be because this is hilarious I mean come on this is a guy who launches himself on a noble personal Jihad's over table rentals but joking aside so far we've seen Wade contemplate violence stalk intimidate and threaten I mean at this point he's pretty much the Buffalo Bill of comics but whether you find him creepy or disturbing or horrifyingly entertaining one would be hard-pressed to deny that mark Wade has certain done everything in his power to earn the title of king baby [Music]
