put on the armor of light let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day not in revealing in drunkenness not in debauchery in the sentence not in quarreling and jealousy but put on the lord jesus christ and make no provision for the flesh to grant to gratify its desires as for the man who is weak in faith welcome him but not for disputes over opinions one believes he may eat anything while the weak man eats only vegetables let not him who eats despise him who abstains and let not him who abstains past judgment on him who eats for god has welcomed him who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another it is before his own master that he stands or falls and he will be upheld for god is able to make him stand [Music] [Music] [Music] wisdom let us attend let us hear the holy gospel peace be unto [Music] the allah is from the holy gospel according to saint matthew [Music] let us attend [Music] [Music] and the lord said if you forgive men their trespasses your heavenly father also will forgive you but if you do not forgive men their trespasses neither will your father forgive your trespasses and when you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men truly i say to you they have their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal for where your treasure is there will your heart be also [Music] please be seated in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit well brothers and sisters it's good to be back with you again uh serving here i think it's been a little over two years since i was here last uh has anything significant happened in the world the last couple of years yeah just a few things right uh we live in uh in times that sometimes are anxiety producing there's a lot going on and we as orthodox christians need to respond in prayer especially pray now for the peace in uh in the ukraine you know uh situation uh pray for our brothers and sisters there and just for uh uh for a peaceful resolution to that to that conflict so there is a lot going on that makes people anxious or angry or bitter or resentful and i think that's why today's gospel reading about forgiveness is so relevant to these times today as you know in the orthodox church on the calendars this sunday right before the beginning of lent uh this is sometimes called forgiveness sunday or cheese fair sunday uh because as we're preparing for the fast um i want to focus this morning on on the theme of forgiveness though because i think this is so important uh for us if we want to rise above the polarization and the rage and the and the personal grievances that tend to dominate our social and political discourse today it's really important that we take to heart jesus message of forgiveness we know we say in the lord's prayer forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us there's a rabbi's story about two brothers who came to him who came to the rabbi to settle a long-standing dispute between these brothers and after they settled their differences the rabbi asked each one to make a wish for the other so the one brother said to his brother i wish for you what you wish for me and the other brother said see rabbi he's starting up again so they did not learn the lesson of forgiveness because they were still harboring anger or bitterness c.s lewis said everyone thinks that forgiveness is a wonderful idea until you actually have something to forgive and then it's where that's where it really becomes real is when we when we do have something that we need to forgive for others um you know the prayer that jesus taught us says that we forgive as we ask god to forgive us as we forgive others who have sinned against us in other words when we hold a grudge against someone when we harbor bitterness toward another person we are basically saying to god don't forgive me now i know that sounds harsh but jesus is even more blunt he says for if you forgive men their trespasses your heavenly father will also forgive you but if you do not forgive them mend their trespasses neither will your father forgive your trespasses i don't know how you could be get more clearer than that in other words if we don't forgive others we can't even pray the lord's prayer without condemning ourselves the church fathers tell us that a christian is one who is to forgive everyone for everything now why is this so important because god wants to release us from the prison of a bitter spirit the world's worst prison is the prison of an unforgiving heart but you may ask father how can i forgive someone who has hurt me very deeply some people think that forgiveness means pretending that the that the hurtful deed didn't happen or that it was excusable or that it wasn't really that bad or wrong on the contrary the very premise of forgiveness is that real harm was done that's the basis on what on which god forgives us he doesn't excuse our sin he just says and we acknowledge that when we sin that there's real that we've done wrong and it is on that basis then that god forgives us because we acknowledge that we have done the wrong forgiveness is not denial or overlooking a wrong it simply means making a decision to move on a decision to stop cultivating anger and revenge basically it means a decision to love instead of seeking revenge somebody said recently i read i thought this was a good statement they said when we stay angry at someone else it's like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die and that's really true because we are just poisoning ourselves by having a bitter or revengeful spirit as christians we not only forgive those who have wronged us but we also ask forgiveness of each other for the sins and offenses that we may have committed we certainly do this in confession we come to the priest but it's important that we also acknowledge to each other when we have done something wrong that has that has hurt somebody else but you may ask isn't sin really an offense against god so shouldn't we be asking his forgiveness instead of each other certainly we should ask the lord to forgive us for all of our sins because our sins do affect our relationship with him but there's no sin that we commit that does not somehow also affect our relationship with with our brothers and sisters with each other often in ways that we don't even know so to so when we come to each other and we ask forgiveness what we are we are really saying that this is not just an act of humility but it's also a recognition of a very profound truth that whenever we sin against christ we also sin against the body of christ that is against each other and thus we need to be reconciled so as we as we come before uh each other today uh just as before we begin lent it's important that we be reconciled to one another if there is anything that is coming between us or between you know ourselves and other people uh we should seek to to ask forgiveness for any any wrongs that we may have done and to be reconciled as dostoyevsky said in the in the book the brothers karamazov each of us is guilty of everything before everyone i think there's a beautiful story in the old testament i'll close with this and you may be familiar with the story of joseph you know joseph this young man who was sold into slavery by his brothers i mean how he was so badly treated that his brothers actually sold him into slavery and he was taken as a slave to egypt and i'm sure you know the story that over the time he he rose in prominence by god's you know gift he he rose from being a jail and a slave to being coming like the ruler of egypt like second only to the pharaoh and there was a famine in the land of of israel and his brothers not knowing what had happened to him they came to egypt because he joseph had wisely stored food uh you know for in times of for times of famine and they came to him seeking uh seeking food seeking help and when they recognized him they were stricken with remorse and they bowed down before and and said how wrong they were what they had done to him and they asked his forgiveness and joseph's statement here i think is really telling what he how he responds he not only forgives them but he says you meant it for evil but god meant it for good in other words even out of that tragic wrong that they had done him god worked it out ultimately for their for their good and i think god rewards forgiveness in that way the of course the greatest uh act of of forgiveness was jesus himself on the cross when he says about those who put him on the cross father forgive them for they they don't know what they're doing they know not what they do and out of that forgiveness out of that great act of sacrifice that jesus made of course it comes comes the glorious resurrection and but but ultimately he forgave everyone who wronged him to forgive and be forgiven what a wonderful way to begin great lent the church knows that in order for us to rise to arrive at the saving feast of the lord's resurrection we must be at peace with him and with each other therefore as saint paul says in colossians therefore as the elect of god holy and beloved put on tender mercies kindness humility meekness long-suffering bearing with one another and forgiving one another even as christ forgave you so you also must do in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen that ever guarded by your power we may give to you the glory father son and holy spirit now and always and unto ages of ages no one called upon the desires and pleasures [Music] yet in your inexpressible and immeasurable love for us you became man without all your change you became our high priest and as lord of all you entrusted to us the celebration of this liturgical sacrifice without the shedding of blood for you alone lord our god have dominion over all things in heaven and lord of the sanctuary [Music] to stand before [Laughter] your sinful and unworthy servant for in truth you are the one who offers and in turn is offered who receives and in turn is shared out on christ [Music] and unto age [Music] [Applause]
