[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] okay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] let us be attentive reading is from saint paul's second letter to timothy wisdom let us be attentive timothy my son always be steady endure suffering do the work of an evangelist fulfill your ministry for i am already at the point of being sacrificed the time of my departure has come i have fought the good fight i have finished the race i have kept the faith henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge will award to me on that day and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing peace be to you [Music] wisdom let us stand and hear the holy gospel peace be with all [Music] reading is from the holy gospel according to saint mark let us be attentive the beginning of the gospel of jesus christ the son of god as it is written in isaiah the prophet behold i send my messenger before thy face who shall prepare your way the voice of one crying in the wilderness prepare the way of the lord make his path straight john the baptizer appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins and there went out to him all the country of judea and all of the people of his of jerusalem and they were baptized by him in the river jordan confessing their sins now john was clothed in camel's hair and had a leather girdle around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey and he preached saying after me comes he who is mightier than i the thong of who sandals i am not worthy to stoop down and untie i have baptized you with water but he will baptize you with the holy spirit [Music] [Music] please be seated yeah yeah let's go outside this thursday my friends is the feast of theophany or epiphany the feast that celebrates the baptism of jesus in the river jordan by john the baptist and so the gospel we read today is known as the gospel before the the feast of epiphany or theophany and we heard an account the very beginning of the gospel of mark we heard an account of what happened when jesus got baptized what led up to it and at that time you have to know that john the baptist john the baptist was about the same age as jesus but he had started his ministry earlier and was calling people to repentance and as a sign of this true repentance in other words that they were sorry for the sins that they had committed um he was out in the wilderness and they'd go out and he'd baptize them in the jordan river and they were forgiven their sins so this is um john the baptist was a very very popular prophet that existed in around jerusalem and judea the area around what is today israel very very popular he had his own disciples following him very popular that's why today's gospel is so significant he says you know there's somebody coming after me who's so much more important than i am that i'm not even worthy to bend down and tie his shoes so john the baptist knew who jesus was and he knew what to say to set everybody's mind right one of the things that interested me though today in our in our gospel was the description of john the baptist he lived in the wilderness and he went around in his clothing was just animal skins and he ate um locusts and honey locusts and honey and this struck me because i don't know if you've seen this on on the tv or read it in the papers or anything but there are a lot of people going around now saying you know don't worry if we run out of food you can always eat bugs lots of protein in bugs you can eat them so john the baptist was doing this 2000 years ago he was way ahead of his time i imagine though i'm so and i'm looking at this thing well how could somebody eat locust and and honey what the i figured it out he probably dried up the the grasshoppers of the locusts dried them out and then crowd you know chopped them up and then mix them with honey you see so you get the honey sweetness and you get the protein it's a complete diet this whole idea of eating locus and honey is simply a matter of emphasizing what a simple person he was he didn't eat steaks and and lamb and all that kind of stuff he just ate locusts and honey he's a very simple man because only one thing mattered to him preaching a god and preaching about repentance and in in insisting that people turn away from their sinful behavior and turn towards god and and adopt a life of virtue and moral living that's what john the baptist was all about that's what led him into trouble and we'll hear that uh next week but he ate locusts and honey and you know i came across i came across a quote from saint basil the great who we um we commemorated yesterday he was a fantastic he was such a powerful saint a some powerful man he was a bishop that lived in what is today turkey eastern turkey such as such a powerful saint that even before he died they called him basil the great and everybody just accepted it he had done so many things he had started orphanages he started he started hospitals he started feeding the poor he did so many wonderful things as bishop that people called him basil the great before he even died a significant figure in the in the life of the orthodox world and i came across one of his quotes that kind of triggered me with uh with today's gospel and about saint john the baptist eating locusts and honey listen to what saint basil said just as it is impossible to verbally describe the sweetness of honey to one who has never tasted honey so the goodness of god cannot be clearly communicated by the way of teaching if we ourselves are not able to penetrate into the goodness of the lord by our own experience and i thought to myself wow that is really something there's no way you could ever tell somebody how sweet and how delicious honey tasted just by talking about it no way well it's really sweet okay what is that until you taste honey you never really know what it tastes like nobody could describe it to you the same thing goes for the goodness of god there's no way that you can describe and talk and communicate to the goodness of god and teach and this and that unless you yourself have experienced the good the goodness of god and i'm i'm i've always said and i will continue to say this the only way that you have to to um the only thing you have to do the only thing you have to do to experience the good of goodness of god is just one thing pay attention pay attention when you look around in your life if you're not really paying attention you got all these other things buzzing around and whatever they are money and jobs and education and all these other important things but still those things feel you don't take the time to pay attention to see around you the beauty of nature for example or to look at somebody who is maybe in in trouble and needs a little help and to feel compassion for them it's simple to see the goodness of god in our life all we have to do is pay attention look for it and sure enough you're going to taste that goodness of god and you're going to embrace it in your life and you'll be able to tell everybody about it how wonderful god is and what wonderful things he's done for you unfortunately and i'm sure i know people like this and i'm sure you know people like this in our lives in everybody's life sometimes bad things happen sometimes misfortunes take place whether it's through health reasons or any other kind of thing and unfortunately some people see that and they say oh this is terrible why did this cancer happen god must not exist god doesn't care and they go off in the completely wrong direction a person who believes in god though will say well gee whiz this cancer came here to teach me something whether it happens to you or to somebody that you love this cancer came to teach me something and it can teach me all kinds of things teach me humility teach me patience teach me reliance on god's goodness and ultimately teach me to look forward to the kingdom of heaven if that's the way it turns out it just depends on if we pay attention or not and once we start noticing these things easily we can communicate to other people exactly who god is what he does and how he loves all of us amen please rise now and join with us as we continue in the divine liturgy on page 12 in your liturgy books again we bow before you and pray to you o good and loving god hear our supplication cleanse our souls and bodies from every defilement of flesh and spirit and grant that yesterday and i forgot to do something we'll just do a little tiny bit because we want to take too much time we have the parish council destroying after all in greece they have christmas carols greek christmas carols but you know there's been a tradition for a long time in greece it's not really santa claus that brings presents to the good boys and girls it's saint basil saint basil on new year's that's when children expect a presence to come from saint basil and they have we'll say like new year's carols or christmas carols for saint basil or whatever and they do that in greece and they're just wonderful many years ago we had a nice lady elderly lady that came and wanted to teach greek school to our children and this was when my kids katie's here today when she was about this tall long time ago and she taught them greek school and one of the things she taught them were a couple of these greek greek new year's carols so i want to do just a couple of verses if you want i don't know is there any more left out front they're all gone right they're all gone are there some out there the first one is uh paio pallioso chronos which is just that she taught this to the children and that's how i learned it actually so we're gonna do um one verse of this and you can hear how it goes [Music] [Music] it's a beautiful anyway that's the greek one of the greekers now this one is the kalanda
