[Music] let us be attentive let your mercy o lord be upon us see re rejoice in the lord oh you righteous wisdom the reading is from saint paul's letter to the ephesians wisdom let us be attentive brethren grace was given to each of us according to the measure of christ's gifts therefore it is said when he ascended on high he led a host of captives and he gave gifts to men and saying he ascended what does it mean but the but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth he who descended in is he who also ascended far above all the heavens that he might fill all things and his gifts were that some some should be apostles some prophets some evangelists some pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of this ministry for building up the body of christ until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the son of god to mature manhood to the measure of the stature of the fullness of christ peace [Music] [Music] a [Music] [Music] [Music] the reading is from the holy gospel according to saint matthew let us be attentive at that time when jesus heard that john had been arrested he withdrew into galilee and leaving nazareth he went and dwell in capernaum by the sea in the territory of zebulon and naphtali that what was spoken by the prophet isaiah might be fulfilled the land of zebulon and the land of naphtali toward the sea across the jordan galilee of the gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned from that time jesus began to preach saying repent for the kingdom of heaven is [Music] [Music] please be seated okay well happy new year everyone new year is the new year uh celebration is always a wonderful one for all of us because if nothing else it symbolizes it represents a new beginning the beginning of a new year and all of us look inward when we pass new years and say okay now this next year what am i going to do different what am i going to be doing better what new thing awaits me in the new year and you know um in today's gospel we also have a new beginning a new beginning jesus was baptized just a few days ago on january 6 and we celebrated his baptism with the feast of epiphany and the blessing of the waters and that the baptism of christ signaled a new beginning a beginning of his public ministry let's put it that way that's when jesus started going out and preaching and healing the people and teaching his disciples all the things about the kingdom of god and in our gospel today we heard how how the prophet isaiah was um was um quoted and and in other words isaiah foretold that jesus would come and what would it be like when jesus came he said the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light it's as if light in other words had come and enlightened the whole world a world that was sitting in darkness so jesus went out to to bring this light to all the corners of the of the the known world in those times and as he as he went he went preaching repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand that's the first thing that jesus said in his public ministry was repent now repentance kind of gets a bad rap in our in our thoughts today in our modern world let's say that way repentance has kind of a negative connotation it has a lot of guilt associated with it because when we think of repenting it means very simple simply in greek metania is the word the word for repentance and it just simply means changing your mind changing your mind and personally it means that we go in a different direction than the direction we were going before so this repentance unfortunately though has had a stigma attached to it of a lot of guilt oh gee i i did something bad oh no how can i ever get over that oh no i can't tell anybody i'm so ashamed shame and guilt have been associated with repentance for such a long time at least in this country that i know of but that's not what jesus meant when he said repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand let me give you an example of exactly what he meant and the example is to be found in a parable that he told his disciples about the prodigal son remember that story a man a wealthy farm a farm owner had two sons and the youngest son came to him said hey hey i don't want to wait for my inheritance give it to me now i want my inheritance now because it would have been split between the two sons so the father said okay here take half of what i own and and go on your way and he went and he squandered his money and before you know it he was so poor he had wasted all the money he was so poor he was happy to eat whatever the pigs were eating and then this kind of repentance struck him this change of mind struck him and it said in the parable gee what in the heck am i doing here eating with the pigs my brothers and my dad my father's house and he's got more than enough to eat in good food too i'll get up and i'll go back to my father and i'll ask ask him to forgive me now notice that so far in the parable of the of the prodigal son there's no guilt anywhere there's just regret the son comes to his senses in other words and he thinks wait a minute the way i'm going is wrong let me change my mind and go back the other way to my father's house and so he did now there were two ways that the father could have received him now the father in this parable of course refers it symbolizes god the father and there are two ways that the father could have received his son who took half of the money and squandered it on in loose living the first way as he came close to the farm the father could have seen him because the servants told him he was coming the father could have done like this sure sure now you come back sure you wasted all that money all my hard-earned money now you come back and you want to have sure sure he could have done that and inflicted guilt upon guilt upon guilt to his son but of course you know that's not how the story goes the story was the exact opposite as the boy came closer what did the father do he told everybody hurry up get ready have a let's have a party my son is back he was like dead and now he's alive again get a party going let's welcome him with open hearts and he did and they did no guilt happiness dancing music because his son came back and that's how god feels when each one of us recognizes we've done something wrong something that he would not be pleased with something that went against what he wants when we come back to god that's how god feels it feels filled with joy happiness that a child of his has returned to him and that's a wonderful kind of a new beginning to have in this new year who knows what 2022 will bring i have i have hopes and prayers for all kinds of things of course for everybody to be healthy and for us to be done with this coronavirus and for everybody the scientists to figure out uh easier ways and more effective ways to deal with it that's what i hope first but second of all i hope that all of us can get back to normal where we think automatically of coming close to god and changing our lives little by little i can't tell you what to change every one of us knows what we do inside and in our life that maybe just isn't exactly what god wants and if we can think to change that god will rejoice with music and dancing amen please rise now and join with us as we continue in the divine liturgy on page 12 in your liturgy books again we bow before you and pray to you o good and loving god hear our supplication cleanse our
