overcome if we go to jesus and choose to remain with him today is the first sunday of lent jesus cross portrays very well the sacrifices and fortitude many of us is experiencing as one family let us pray for each other's temptations and sufferings that we may remain faithful as we strive to become channels of god's grace in jesus today is the first sunday of lent in our priest presider for our 10-am mass is father jerome ormita svd please stand as we sing the entrance him [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] uh [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] um [Music] we are gathered in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the lamb of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit today we are on the first sunday of advent and in this in today's gospel we will hear jesus being tempted by the devil but let us try to learn from jesus who resisted to the temptation of the devil and as humans as we are we are also we have also have our own little temptations in our lives that is why as we uh journey not this lenten season let us try to strengthen our way of prayer in order to resist temptation to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries let us call to mind our sins and ask god's pardon and mercy all together let us say i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most previous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever amen please be seated to listen to the word of god the first reading tells us that offering to god the fruits of the land in thanksgiving the israelites profess publicly the saving acts of god has done on their behalf lent is a time to recall the lord's jesus suffering on our behalf [Music] a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord thanks be to god so pretty lord [Music] lord when i am [Applause] [Music] lord when i am [Music] say to the lord my refugee [Music] be with me lord when i am [Music] he has given commands [Music] lord when i am upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against [Music] you shall travel down upon the lions [Music] when i am [Music] he acknowledges my he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him i will deliver him and glorify [Music] when i am [Applause] [Music] in the second reading the apostle paul exhorts us to place our faith and confidence in the lord jesus who suffered and died and was raised from the dead for our salvation a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with a heart and soul is justified and one confesses with a mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord as lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved word of the lord thanks be to god please stand as we honor the holy gospel praise to you lord jesus [Music] jesus christ [Music] but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] jesus christ [Music] me so the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command the stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said said to him i shall give to you and all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it is also it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time my dear friends the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ peace be seated as i mentioned earlier today is the first sunday of lent and every sunday there is always that theme and today we heard jesus was being tempted by the devil and as we prepare for the real aim of this lenten season above all else is to prepare all of us christians for the celebration of the death and resurrection of our lord jesus christ the better the preparation for this day the more effective the celebration will be will be one can effectively relieve the mystery only with purified mind and heart the church invites us to repent from every evil and return to the lord who is eagerly waiting for each one of us to come to him as we meditate or reflect on today's readings was facing the people the israelites they were about to cross the jordan river he knows very well that he will not be able to cross the jordan river quesadilla if you remember they were wandering for 40 long years in the desert and as about that as they are about to enter into that promised land moses gave them some simple instruction but what is that very simple instruction that he said he reminds them that in the promised land they have to rely on god as much as they did when they were in the desert rely on god as much as they did when they were in the desert and as a leader moses gives a preview of the wonderful experiences they would have in the promised land you will all experience the milk and honey in that land as god have promised to each one of us that every day of our lives while in the second reading paul teaches or reminds the the roman christians that if you believe in jesus you will not be put to shame and if you call on jesus he will always dare to help us while in the gospel [Music] especially during this lenten season the gospel shows us how satan tempted jesus in the desert just before his public ministry hika [Music] but then the temptations of jesus in the desert reveal to us the way in which the son of god as the messiah responded to the devious methods of the evil one proposes first [Music] that jesus was very hungry now remember jesus was in the desert if you are very familiar to guide us to help us what will be our life jesus also in his in his in his ministry started to have a prayerful no life from the start and then because he fasted for 40 long days if you are the son of god command the stones to become bread man does not live by bread alone but every word that comes from the mouth of god second temptation the devil was the passenger i shall give you all this power and glory for it has been handed over me that i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve. and then he tempted against jesus throw yourself from here you're the angels of god will not let you that you will be able to touch your hands or even feet on the ground you shall not put your god to the test from the first two response of jesus he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone talino no if you are going to observe all these three things temptations are everywhere temptations are every day of our lives wherever we go whatever we do we see temptations jesus himself was being tempted it is a reminder for us that jesus being human was tempted but because he is also divine fully human and fully divine so temptations are everywhere let us try to remind ourselves that our church teaches us temptation is not a sin when will that becomes a sin if you give into temptation jesus himself was being tempted but did jesus give in to the sophomore of the temptation no he resisted it the temptations for us to acquire things command the stones to become bread an temptation we acquire a lot of things we want to hammer many things because we believe that our our belief is that if you have a lot of things you become rich and if you become rich you feel happy sometimes the things that we acquire are anunna you acquire things which you need that's why is it necessary is it a one or a need for dining so we acquire things with the temptation to get all things as much as we want we are already in the age of consumerism advertisement because this is being promoted by so-and-so no idol and we want to buy it second the temptation to have power jesus is being tempted to have power i'll give you all this if you worship me temptations to have power because we want to have authority and if we are having have an authority we have the control to people we can control people we have the power over people we want to control them sometimes we abuse power that makes it sinful third temptation is jesus was being do not put your god to the test we are testing god in our lives all these things we can resist we can resist as what saint paul uh in the second reading talks about if we call on god we ourselves we cannot do it alone mahira mahira especially during this time of lent the more that we want to celebrate a meaningful and fruitful lent and season the more that the evil is trying to really contempt us why what is the aim of the the devil is that the aim is for us to become unfaithful he is trying his best to draw us from god every single day every way that he could so my dear friends all these things no sometimes we feel that it's just ordinary and then we try to classify is that white lies our church never teaches us that there is such thing as white lies all lies are lies all lies are sinful white lies a theology no white lies back at my white but my collarbone lies all lies are sinful act so my dear friends no let us not try to classify because we were not malignant so let us try to ask god to help us in this journey that as we continue to make ourselves trying to [Music] all of us will be saved let us all stand and profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on a third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge living in the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen heavenly father renew us in your covenant of mercy that leads us to everlasting life with humble hearts we pray lord graciously hear us lord graciously hear us may the church leaders find strength in the christ in the desert whenever they are tempted to live a life against the gospel we pray lord graciously hear us may the civil leaders be empowered by your love o lord so that they may use the material and spiritual gifts for common good we pray lord graciously hear us as we go through this pandemic may we courageously witness to jesus christ through faith-inspired works of peace justice love and compassion we pray lord graciously hear us may those who are preparing for baptism and reception into the catholic church be guided by the spirit of wisdom and peace we pray lord graciously hear us that those who seek public office be guided by genuine fear of god and love of neighbors for the welfare of the common good we pray lord graciously hear us that there be honest orderly and peaceful elections free from corruption intimidation violence terrorism deception bribery and fraud we pray lord graciously hear us that the integrity of the electoral process be upheld human dignity be respected and the poor and the weak be prioritized we pray lord graciously hear us through the act of consecration of russia to the immaculate heart of mary we pray for peace in ukraine and unity among nations we pray lord graciously hear us may those who called upon your name in faith o father during their earthly journey hear the voice of christ welcoming them into the joy of heaven we pray lord graciously hear us let us pray for the urgent concerns of our community and our personal intentions we pray lord graciously hear us father through the spirit you led jesus into the desert to prepare him for his mission of mercy lead us by the same spirit during this lenten season that we may be spiritually prepared to celebrate the resurrection we ask this through christ our lord amen please be seated [Music] the gifts we bring to you [Music] have your problems received [Music] yes [Music] me [Music] sanctify [Music] for you too [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church give us the right disposition o lord we pray to make these offerings with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts who live them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated these past through his past the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worldly the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim oh [Music] lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] god [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope jose at vincula our archbishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with saint joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles especially saint jude tedeos and all the saints saints arnold and joseph who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to pray kingdom come i will be [Music] us um [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we will be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] now [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave
